China is significantly increasing maritime pressure around Taiwan, with a record number of Chinese vessels detected near the island as Taipei moves to strengthen its defenses.

Taiwan’s Coast Guard says 244 Chinese vessels were detected around the main island in July, averaging nearly eight ships per day. The figure represents a sharp increase from 55 vessels in June and 30 in May.

The surge has raised concerns among Taiwanese officials and analysts over whether China’s growing maritime presence could be more than a show of strength, including possible preparations for undersea warfare, maritime pressure or a future blockade.

Another major concern is China’s military-civil fusion strategy, under which civilian maritime assets can potentially be requisitioned for national defense purposes. Analysts warn that commercial vessels could provide additional transport capacity during a potential military operation.

Meanwhile, Taiwan is strengthening its own defenses. The island’s opposition-controlled parliament rejected a proposed $6.6 billion special drone budget, instead approving approximately $1.26 billion annually for military drones, amounting to around $7.6 billion over six years through regular budgets.

Taiwan has also conducted a major military exercise involving more than 5,000 reservists across two brigades, highlighting Taipei’s growing focus on preparing for potential threats.

The tensions stem from Beijing’s claim that Taiwan is part of China and its refusal to rule out the use of force to take control of the self-governed island. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and maintains that the People’s Republic of China has never governed Taiwan.

When asked by reporters about the lessons Taiwan has learnt from Israel-Hamas conflict, the Taiwanese defence minister said, "the initial (lesson) is that intelligence work is very important. With intelligence, many countermeasures can be made. A war can even be avoided."

"It is everyone's shared expectations to avoid a war," said Chiu, as reported by Reuters.

Even as the island works to counter China's military threats, the Taiwan minister said that even as Taiwan's military works to boost its combat readiness, it will not initiate a conflict. He stated that the ongoing conflict demonstrated the horror of war.

During a forum in Taipei on Wednesday, former Australian prime minister Scott Morrison voiced his support for Taiwan's strengthening of its defences.

He said that in light of China's threats against the island nation, it is essential for Taiwan to strengthen its resilience. He also said that Taiwan needs to show "urgency" and do more.

Comparing Taiwanese independence to a ''charging rhino'' that must be stopped, China's foreign minister Wang Yi blamed the US for speeding it along.

After China staged large-scale war games around the island it views as its sovereign territory, Taiwan proposed $19 billion in defence spending for next year on Thursday.

The double-digit increase in Taiwan's budget comes after heightened Chinese aggression due to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taipei.

Marking the island's sixth consecutive year of growth in defence spending since 2017, the budget includes an additional T$108.3 billion in spending for fighter jets and other equipment.

In comparison with the island's defence spending growth in recent years, the double-digit rise on 2022 marks a sharp increase as the 13.9 per cent year-on-year increase will make it a record T$586.3 billion ($19.41 billion).

Reiterating the determination to protect their sovereignty, President Tsai ing-Wen is focusing on modernising the armed forces.

The Commission said China's customs statistics showed a 91 per cent&nbsp;drop in trade from Lithuania to China in December as compared to the same month in 2020, with the most affected sectors being pharmaceuticals, lasers, electronics and food.

The EU executive said those actions appeared illegal under WTO rules and that attempts to resolve them bilaterally had failed.

In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said, "The so-called Chinese coercion against Lithuania is groundless and inconsistent."

China has downgraded diplomatic ties with Lithuania and pressured multinationals to sever links with the Baltic state after it allowed Taiwan to open a de-facto embassy in Vilnius.

By going to the WTO, the EU lent support to accusations by Lithuanian business leaders and officials that the row has resulted in China blocking imports from Lithuania and other economic restrictions.

Bolstering the Taiwanese air force's ability to respond to what Washington and Taipei see as increasing intimidation by China's military, the US is looking for ways to potentially accelerate delivery of Taiwan's next generation of new-build F-16 fighter jets. The aircraft are currently slated to be delivered by the end of 2026.

The Block 70 aircraft are the newest F-16 configuration, with new avionics, a modernised cockpit and an improved engine, according to Lockheed Martin.

"It is neither a wanderer nor a chess piece. Only the 23 million people of Taiwan have the right to decide Taiwan's future, and absolutely will not accept a path laid out by an autocratic political system," it said in a statement sent to Reuters.&nbsp;

The EU added Taiwan to its list of trade partners eligible for an investment deal in 2015, but has not held talks with the democratically ruled island on the issue since then, although Taipei is keen on striking an agreement.

The Mirror Media report said the unnamed Hong Konger who allegedly attempted to recruit Chang had been developing a spy network under the disguise of doing business since Tsai's predecessor Ma Ying-jeou, who was president between 2008 and 2016.

He was linked to China's Central Military Commission and had successfully recruited several retired Taiwanese officers, the outlet added, citing unnamed sources.

Chang has denied any wrongdoing and claimed he strictly followed all confidentiality requirements during meetings with friends, Taiwan's official Central News Agency said.&nbsp;

Beijing has ramped up an influence campaign to sway public opinion on the island while its military has been making incursions into&nbsp;Taiwan's air defence identification zone and into waters close to the island.

China has described the missions as necessary to protect its sovereignty and deal with "collusion" between Taipei and Washington.

The United States, which like most countries has no formal diplomatic ties with&nbsp;Taiwan, has watched with alarm the rising tension with Beijing.

"The aim of the Chinese Communists' infiltration into our technology is not only about economic interests, but also has a political intention to make Taiwan poorer and weaker."

Taiwan's Economy Ministry, in its report, said&nbsp;China&nbsp;was trying to boost its semiconductor industry by "poaching" Taiwanese talent "as well as obtaining our country's industry's commercial secrets, to harm the country's competitiveness".

The Cabinet has met many times to work out how to address the problem, the ministry added.

Lawmaker Ho Hsin-chun, one of the legislators who has proposed the amendments, said the need was urgent.

"The infiltration of&nbsp;China's red supply chain is everywhere," she told a parliament committee meeting.

It is not clear when or if the amendments could be passed into law, and the Justice Ministry in its report suggested further discussion of the wording was needed.

Hu Mu-yuan, deputy head of Taiwan's National Security Bureau, expressed broad backing for the measure.

"As long as it's helpful for our country's security and interests, we support it," he said.

The island's defence ministry said the air force deployed missiles to "monitor" the incursion into the southwestern part of its air defence identification zone. It also said its planes warned the Chinese aircraft, including by radio.

It marked the largest incursion to date by the Chinese air force since Taiwan's defence ministry began disclosing almost daily Chinese military flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea last year.
