Finding a prima facie case for murder against the accused, the trial court, while framing charges against the accused persons, had noted that the deceased, after being abducted and brought to the stadium, was given severe beatings by many of the accused persons who used sticks, baseball and hockey sticks to cause bodily injuries to him.
The judge had further noted that the victims were tortured by the accused persons for a prolonged time after putting lock at the main gate of the stadium so as to rule out any help for the deceased.
Kumar had been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021. Previously, he was granted interim bail twice&mdash;once to perform his father&rsquo;s last rites and another time for surgery on a torn ligament.

Two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar on Monday was granted an interim bail for four days by the Delhi court to perform his father's last rites. Kumar, the main accused in Sagar Dhankar murder case, was in police custody since June 2, 2021. The Rohini Court granted bail to Kumar on humanitarian grounds for an amount of INR 1 lakh and two sureties of the same amount.&nbsp;

The Additional Sessions Judge Shivaji Anand in a statement said knowing the father of accused passed away yesterday and the final rites are to be performed today, Sushil will granted an interim bail for the same from March 6th to 9th.&nbsp;

“Keeping in view the fact that the father of the accused expired yesterday and his last rites are to be carried out today itself, on humanitarian grounds, the applicant or accused be released on interim bail from March 6 to March 9 only on furnishing personal bonds of the sum of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties of the like amount,” he said.

The judge further said considering threat to the witnesses upon the accused's release and Kumar's security on the slip side of it, at least two security personals will stay alongside him all the time. He also added that the defined amount will have to be deposited in advance with the concerned jail superintendent, as per the jail rules.&nbsp;

“The entire expenditure of deployment of security persons or policemen for keeping surveillance and security of the applicant shall be borne by his family members. Applicant is directed to surrender before the Jail Superintendent concerned after expiry of interim bail period i.e, on March 10,” the court said.

However, as per stipulations related to the interim bail, Kumar cannot indulge in any of the activities such as threatening the prosecution witnesses, tampering with evidence; and if even and when required he must share his phone's live location with the investigation officer. If he fails to abide by any such rules, the court is liable to cancel his interim bail then and there.

“In case it is prima facie brought to the notice of the court that the applicant is violating the said conditions, the interim bail granted to him shall be liable to be cancelled,” the court said.

Since then, the tainted wrestler has been behind the bars and the supplementary chargesheet, released by the Delhi Police, has recently revealed that the wrestler had fired at dogs and even assaulted fellow athletes hours before Sagar's death.

The alleged events occurred on May 5, as per the supplementary chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch at Rohini court last year against four men, relying on disclosure statements of Sushil’s security guard Anil Dhiman and other accused.

Dhiman -- in his statement to the cops --&nbsp;went onto claim that he was with Sushil on the unfortunate night of May 4-5, 2021. Back then, the wrestler had allegedly called several people to report to the basketball ground as he wanted to “teach a lesson to some people”.

On the other hand, co-accused Rahul claimed in his statement that he along with Sushil -- who was allegedly carrying a licensed pistol -- informed that after chasing away a third wrestler&nbsp;named Vikas (who asked Sushil the reason for his anger)&nbsp;the two-time Olympic medallist had even fired at a few dogs and said, “Where I go, who I meet, what I eat — all this information is being leaked by Sagar and Sonu Mahal.”

Dhiman further claimed in his statement that “later that night, I, along with Sushil and others, visited Shalimar Bagh and abducted Amit and Ravinder (who were assaulted along with Sagar) around 11.30 pm and took them to Chhatrasal stadium.” In addition, he informed the cops that the two were assaulted “on Sushil’s instructions”.

“At the stadium, we beat them a lot… we then visited a flat in Model Town where we abducted Sagar, Jaibhagwan, and Sonu and took them to the stadium,” Dhiman added.

According to the chargesheet, he quoted Sushil as saying, “Do not leave them alive. Beat them mercilessly.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, co-accused Praveen quoted&nbsp;Sushil as saying, “I am the gunda of this area. How can you take over my flat?" Dhiman stated that they “assaulted them with lathi, danda, hockey stick and baseball bat. Our intention was to kill Sagar and Jaibhagwan as that was what Sushil wanted… He was scared that Sagar and Jaibhagwan were collecting information on him and wanted to cause him harm (to his life); that’s why Sushil wanted to kill them…"

Sushil Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 23 this year in the case. Advocate Pradeep Rana appeared for Sushil Kumar argued that he is a person with clean antecedents and has been never found violating the law of the land. He also added that he is a married person aged about 38 years and has the responsibility of maintaining his entire family.

In bail plea Sushil Kumar also emphasized that the police left no stone unturned to present a "false and guilty image" of him and fed false information to the media to wrongfully establish a connection between him and renowned gangsters.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police counsel strongly opposed his bail petition. According to Delhi Police, Kumar had been on the run trying to evade his arrest. He had crossed the borders of as many as seven states and union territories in the past 18 days. He also constantly changed his SIM cards in an effort to avoid arrest, informed the Delhi Police.

The international wrestler who is jail since June 2, 2021, sought relief from the court by asserting that he has been falsely implicated in the alleged murder case and the accusations are levelled with the aim and object of humiliating him and injuring his reputation.

The Olympian emphasized that the police left no stone unturned to present a false and guilty image&nbsp;of him and fed false information to the media to wrongfully establish a connection between him and renowned gangsters.

They had even gone to the point of painting a grotesque image of the present accused where he was said to be a gangster himself and even questions were raised against his antecedents,&nbsp;Kumar said in a 16-pages bail plea.

However, after filing the charge sheet, all the claims and leaks made by the investigating agency are untrue and without any footing in the reality, the plea filed through advocate Pradeep Rana said.

To buttress his contentions, he stated that the FIR was filed after a delay, and statements of witnesses were marred by improvements and contractions, and were deliberately withheld by the investigating agency to build a "false case".

The investigating agency at the fag end of the investigation cropped up a new version that the deceased had given a dying declaration to the police officials with an aim to add bite to the otherwise toothless case of the prosecution, Kumar submitted.

He also called the FIR a conjoint mix of "assumption, presumption, and malafide intentions", adding that the police arrested him in the absence of concrete evidence.

The wrestler further said that he is no more required for any custodial interrogation, much less for any recovery or discovery of incriminating material as the charge sheet has been filed which shows that the probe against him is over.

Kumar said that nothing incriminating has been recovered from him which further corroborates his innocence but the investigating agency in order to build a case against him has attributed certain vehicles and weapons to him.

The wrestler further told the court that he has clean antecedents and has never violated any law.

The accused has received various laurels representing India and has made the nation proud by winning medals at numerous International tournaments and championships,&nbsp;the plea stated and listed out all the medals he has won over the years.

The Olympic wrestler submitted that he is confident to prove his innocence before any court of law and any detention at this stage would only be pre-trial incarceration without any fault on his part being innocent.

The five persons were brought by the accused from Model Town and Shalimar Bagh… brought in different cars. He was originally given the job by GOI considering his ability in wrestling. Sushil and Ajay Kumar went missing after the incident after which Delhi Police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the wrestler's whereabouts.&nbsp;

The Delhi Police has filed an FIR in the case under sections 302 (murder), 308 (culpable homicide), 365 (kidnapping), 325 (causing grievous hurt), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Non-bailable warrants had been issued by Delhi Police and they had also issued a lookout notice for the wrestler.&nbsp;

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Vijender Singh recalled the historic 2008 Beijing Games while explaining how it changed their lives and sporting scenario in the country.&nbsp;

Sushil remains the only Indian sportsperson to have won two Olympic medals. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna-awardee remembered how his coach taugh him to be humble while adding that those three medals in Beijing Olympics changed the outlook of Indian sport.

“I consider it an honour to have won medals for India. My coach Satpal taught me to be humble and to focus on my sport. No one believed we could win Olympic medals in 2008 but those 3 medals changed the outlook of Indian sport. Today every young sportsperson wants to win a gold at the Olympics,” Sushil told WION.&nbsp;

Whereas Vijender said that both Abhinav Bindra and Sushil deserve Bharat Ratna for what they have done for the country and added that it would be a motivating aspect for budding sportspersons if the duo is awarded with India’s highest civilian honour.

“Abhinav bindra and Sushil deserve the Bharat Ratna for the achievements. I do not want to go into the past and which sportsperson deserves it more but it would be very motivating for budding sportspersons if these two are awarded India’s highest civilian honour. They are fully deserving of this respect,” Vijender told WION.

In an interesting insight, Sushil revealed how Leander Paes’ bronze medal at 1996 Atlanta Olympics inspired him to become an Olympic medallist. Whereas for Vijender, it was Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore’s silver at Athens Olympics, which motivated him to be an Olympic medallist.

Our coach always told Yogeshwar Dutt and me that we have to win Olympic medals. But we had no idea what the Olympics meant or what an Olympic medal signified. Leander paes set an example in 1996 and that changed our complete focus as sportspersons. And now a new generation wants to emulate our success after seeing us on the medal podium,” recalled Sushil.

“I was 18-year-old when I qualified for Athens and I had to shave to look mature. I was blown over by the spectacle of the Olympics and had enjoyed myself thoroughly taking in the sights and sounds of the city. I saw how Rathore was celebrated after his medal and that told me that I had to win a medal to make a name. That was when I devoted myself to the target of winning an Olympic medal,” Vijender revealed.

The life of an Olympic medallist changes overnight and the same happened to Vijender and Sushil as they returned home amid a rousing reception and countless felicitation ceremonies.&nbsp;

“God has been kind. We both come from families that were not financially well-off and at times i am grateful to god for all that has come our way. The Olympic medal changed our lives and today young wrestlers who come from similar backgrounds look at us and believe that they too can emulate our success,” said Sushil.

“I have led life on my own terms. I won the Olympic medal due to my hard work and talent. I did not owe it to anyone and did what my heart told me,” said an ever-confident Vijender.

When asked how Indian sport changed between the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, Vijender said the phase brought a lot more limelight to Olympic athletes and Indian sport never looked back after that.

“A lot changed! There was space for Olympic athletes on the back pages that was usually reserved for cricket. The media interest grew and that sparked interest in a new generation of sport persons. Indian sport has not looked back ever since,” said Vijender.&nbsp;

We have world-class infrastructure now and that produces a new generation of champions,” Sushil concluded.

Wrestler Sushil Kumar on Wednesday expressed his solidarity with Bajrang Punia and said that the government should felicitate athletes to set a good example.

Kumar said players do a lot of hard work and they should be felicitated to set a good example among the budding athletes.

"Athletes do a lot of hard work and if you felicitate the players, it would prove to be a good incentive for the budding athletes in the country. Everyone is standing together with Bajrang Punia," Kumar said.

Earlier in the day, Punia had said that he will return the prize money if athletes continue to be disrespected by the state government of Haryana.

"I will return my prize money if the players did not get respect. The government has cancelled the award ceremony and they are directly transferring the curtailed amount to athlete's account. The wrestler, who hails from Haryana, on Tuesday had tweeted against the sports policy of the state government for curtailing the winning amount of the sportsperson.

Facing criticism from the gold medalist, Haryana sports minister Anil Vij on Wednesday claimed that his government has always given the biggest prize money as compared to the other states.

"We have not insulted any sportsmen in the state. In fact, we give them the highest winning amount in India. We give them the best job opportunities," Vij told reporters.

However, Punia further slammed the government, saying that it did not fulfil the promise of giving jobs to players.

"I want to ask the Sports Minister of Haryana that whom's sports policy are you talking about. How many jobs have you offered to players?," Punia asked.

The Delhi High Court on Friday ordered the immediate release of Sushil Kumar Sharma who was convicted in the 1995 Tandoor Murder case.

The former youth Congress leader killed his wife in 1995 after accusing her of indulging in an affair. He then allegedly cut her body into pieces and tried to burn it in a tandoor.

Sharma was sentenced to death by a lower court in 2003. His death sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2007.&nbsp;

In 2013 the sentence was relegated due to lack of evidence. The apex court had said that there was no evidence to prove that Sushil had chopped his wife's body into pieces and burnt it in a tandoor.

A Bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal allowed the plea filed by Sharma seeking his release.

Few days ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar's name is surprisingly missing from the list of entry released by the tournament organisers on the official website.

The official list of entries for the men's freestyle 74kg wrestling category, uploaded on the CWG 2018 website does not mention the name of Sushil among other 15 wrestlers participating in the event.

Reflecting on the same, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Secretary General Rajeev Mehta told that it is a fault of the organising committee and that they are rectifying the error.

When quizzed if Sushil has pulled out his name from the tournament, Mehta denied the same before clarifying that the IOA and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) are not at all at fault.

After spending two years away from the mat, Sushil returned to compete at the National Championship last year in Indore, only to see himself mired in controversy for winning the gold in the tournament after his three opponents conceded a walkover.

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is slated to be held from April 4 to 15.
