Super Mario Bros Movie creates another box office record! Surpasses $500 million in North America

The Super Mario Bros. Movie did an impressive $58.2 million in ticket sales in North American movie theatres&nbsp;this weekend, easily fending off two new challengers, estimates showed Sunday.

The joint effort of Universal, Nintendo and Illumination studios, now in its third week out, ranks as the year's top movie so far, taking in an accumulated $434.3 million domestically and $437 million internationally.&nbsp;

Voice actors in the game-based animation include Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key.

Second place for the Friday-through-Sunday period went to Warner Bros.' blood-soaked horror movie Evil Dead Rise, at $23.5 million -- "an excellent opening" for a movie made for just $17 million, said analyst David A. Gross.

Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star as sisters battling a crew of demonic creatures known, not so subtly, as Deadites.

Another new release, MGM's action war movie Guy Ritchie's The Covenant,&nbsp;didn't fare quite as well, taking in an estimated $6.3 million for the third spot. Gross said that "weak start" fell well short of the average for the genre.&nbsp;

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the film's tale of a US army sergeant who, after returning to the United States, goes back to Afghanistan to rescue a friend (played by Iraq-born Dar Salim) who had once saved him from the Taliban.

In fourth place, still strong in its fifth week out, was Lionsgate's neo-noir thriller John Wick: Chapter 4,&nbsp;at $5.8 million. Keanu Reeves plays the titular hitman.

And in fifth was Amazon Studios' Air, a sports drama about the business deal surrounding Nike and the Michael Jordan basketball shoe of the title name, at $5.5 million.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...Mario? I must admit, I was sceptical going into The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Video game adaptations have a&nbsp;reputation for being terrible, but this one wasn't half bad. It's colourful, fast-paced, and delivers some satisfying fan service for longtime fans of the Mario franchise. But this is also clear that this movie was made more for the fans than for the general movie-going audience. With a plot so thin you could roll it up and stick it in your pocket, it relies heavily on nostalgia and Easter eggs to carry it along.

Let's start with the good. The animation is pretty nice, bursting with vibrant colours and fluid movements that make it feel like you are watching the characters from some of the newer versions of the video game come to life on the big screen. The Mushroom Kingdom and the Dark Lands are brought to life in truly stunning detail. The action is also mostly exciting, with plenty of jumping, running, chasing, getting power-ups, and dodging fireballs and rivers of lava involved. There are nods to the original games scattered throughout the movie, from the recognisable sound effects and musical cues to the power-ups like the Super Star and the Cat Suit.&nbsp;

However, the movie's overreliance on nostalgia and fan service also proves to be its downfall. The plot feels like an afterthought, a mere vehicle to showcase the various locations and characters from the games. It is barely more than a flimsy excuse to string together a series of set pieces. Voice actors do their best with what they are given, but there's only so much one can do with such thinly written roles. The dialogue in the movie is a lacklustre affair, punctuated by trite quips that seem to be directly lifted from a low-budget animated series.

Video game adaptations have a reputation for being terrible, but this one wasn't half bad. It's colourful, fast-paced, and delivers some satisfying fan service for longtime fans of the Mario franchise. But this is also clear that this movie was made more for the fans than for the general movie-going audience. With a plot so thin you could roll it up and stick it in your pocket, it relies heavily on nostalgia and Easter eggs to carry it along. The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows the story of Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two plumbers from Brooklyn who get sucked into a Warp Pipe and end up in different kingdoms. Mario ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor Joy), while Luigi lands in the Dark Lands ruled by the Koopa king Bowser (Jack Black). Bowser plans to marry Peach and destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if that fails. He imprisons Luigi to blackmail Mario, who he sees as competition for Peach's favour. It is the classic Mario story. Let's start with the good. The animation is pretty nice, bursting with vibrant colours and fluid movements that make it feel like you are watching the characters from some of the newer versions of the video game come to life on the big screen. The Mushroom Kingdom and the Dark Lands are brought to life in truly stunning detail. The action is also mostly exciting, with plenty of jumping, running, chasing, getting power-ups, and dodging fireballs and rivers of lava involved. There are nods to the original games scattered throughout the movie, from the recognisable sound effects and musical cues to the power-ups like the Super Star and the Cat Suit. However, the movie's overreliance on nostalgia and fan service also proves to be its downfall. The plot feels like an afterthought, a mere vehicle to showcase the various locations and characters from the games. It is barely more than a flimsy excuse to string together a series of set pieces. Voice actors do their best with what they are given, but there's only so much one can do with such thinly written roles. The dialogue in the movie is a lacklustre affair, punctuated by trite quips that seem to be directly lifted from a low-budget animated series. John Leguizamo continues to criticise Chris Pratt's Super Mario Bros. Movie. &nbsp;For the unversed, John was the first actor, who voiced Mario's brother Luigi in Bob Hoskins' 1993 movie Mario&nbsp;and recently he said that he's not going to watch the new film based on the famous video game character.

On Wednesday, while speaking with TMZ, the 62-year-old actor was asked whether he is going to watch the new animated film or not. Replying to this, John said that he had no plans to see Pratt's movie.&nbsp; 
 
"No, I will not be watching," he said, before adding, "They could've included a Latin character. I was groundbreaking, and then they stopped the groundbreaking." 
 
This is not the first time when the actor has slammed the casting of the film. During his recent chat with Indiewire, the actor said that he feels the movie went "backwards" after casting two white actors as the voices of Mario and Luigi. 
 
''I’m O.G. A lot of people love the original," Leguizamo said when asked to share his thoughts on the new movie. 
 
"I did Comic-Con in New York and in Baltimore, and everyone was like, No, no, we love the old one, the original. They’re not feeling the new one. I'm not angry. It's unfortunate," he said further. 
 
Pratt's casting as the lead character in the film has been a point of discussion from the day it was officially confirmed, with many fans questioning whether Pratt will be able to voice Marios' in his Italian accent on not.&nbsp;

I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.”
