The female students of the Vishwa Bharti Womens College in the Rainawari area of Srinagar were at the centre of the controversy which within no time took a political turn. From political leaders to religious clerics, the controversy snowballed and was condemned by one and all.&nbsp;

''Why should we take off the abaya? I don't love this school more than my God that I will take off this abaya. I will never take my abaya off, there are so many boys in the college and there is so much immorality going on which is invisible to their eyes and asking us to take off the abaya. Who is she to tell us to take the abaya off? She is asking us if we have to wear an abaya rather than go to a Darsgah (Religious School). Don't the girls who wear abayas get the same education as everyone else?'' said a girl student.&nbsp;

However, the school administration has stated that there has been some miscommunication on the issue as the students were asked to wear the cover as per recommended norms. The school authorities said that the students are wearing multicoloured abaya and this is not as per the uniform of the college.&nbsp;

"Even though the school has its own dress code, and some girls also wear ‘abaya’, they have never been stopped. Yesterday, I informed teachers to ask those students not to wear abayas on the school premises, but they can come in 'abayas' until they reach the school premises in order to maintain decorum. There is no higher authority involved in it but I&nbsp;believe a proper dress code which is being followed shall be followed here as well. We will announce a proper colour and pattern of ‘Abaya’ for all those students who want to come to school wearing the same.&nbsp;We are not allowing colourful Abayas to be followed in the institution,'' said the InCharge principal of the school, Memroz Shafi.&nbsp;

Kashmir: Students' protest against hijab ban snowballs into big controversy

According to a report by Swedish TV4, at least four students were taken to the hospital after a knife attack in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna, on Thursday (June 1). The media report, citing the local police, said that the incident has been classified as attempted murder.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

According to the TV4 report, the four victims were high school students aged 15 out of which three were stabbed in the upper body and were taken to the hospital.&nbsp;

The Swedish media later reported that the incident was a knife attack. They had also initially reported that the reported attack took place at a school but the headmaster later said the students had been at a different location at the time of the incident. The alleged attack took place in the afternoon just before 1:00 pm (local time) in the area of Munktellarenan, said the media report.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the police say?</h2>

Spokesperson Dennis Strömberg Johansson, as per The Sun, said that there are several police patrols in the vicinity of Munktellarenan and barriers have been set up. "It must be an assault with at least one motive. The crime classification is attempted murder," said Johansson, as quoted by the media report.&nbsp;

Police personnel were seen in the area and the scene has since been cordoned off, reported the local media. In an update some hours later, the police said that they have arrested two young men in connection with the case.&nbsp;

"There was some kind of brawl between several people. We don't know if there are two or more gangs of people involved, but it is several persons," said the local police spokesperson, as quoted by Reuters, adding, "There is no information whatsoever that this is related to terrorism."

The incident also comes over a year after two teachers, Victoria Edstrom and Sara Book, in their 50s, were allegedly killed by an 18-year-old student armed with an axe and knives.&nbsp;

The incident took place in March 2022 at the Malmo Latin School where two employees at a secondary school in the centre of the country’s third-largest city were stabbed and later succumbed to injuries.

The perpetrator, later identified as Fabian Cederholm, was found guilty of the attack late last year. He was sentenced to life in prison, which in Sweden means a minimum of 20 to 25 years, but it could be extended.

Nine students have died by suicide in Andhra Pradesh after results of class 11 and 12 exams were declared on Wednesday by the Andhra Pradesh Board of Intermediate Examination. The shocking news comes amidst a spate of suicides in India's premier colleges. Four students have died in suspected suicides this year at various campuses of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

As per National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) Accidental Deaths &amp; Suicides in India (ADSI) report, over 13,000 students died in 2021 in India at the rate of more than 35 every day, a rise of 4.5 per cent from the 12,526 deaths in 2020 with 864 out of 10,732 suicides being due to “failure in examination.”&nbsp;

The number of deaths by suicide among students saw an increase of 4.5 per cent in 2021, shows the latest data from the NCRB. Maharashtra had the highest number of student deaths by suicide in 2021 with 1,834 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1,308, and Tamil Nadu with 1,246 deaths.

Speaking on this issue, Dr Ashima Shrivastava, RCI Registered Child and Adult Psychologist told WION, “As we all know that there is a stigma related to mental health issues. Many times people are not able to approach professional help. So, in such a scenario there are Govt helplines and NGO helplines which are very helpful. First of all, they are free of cost and easily accessible and children could keep a note of these emergency numbers. These helplines provide a very confidential and non-judgemental support to the children when a person is in a high level of distress. To name a few in India, there is Sanjeevani and Sneh, run by&nbsp;NGOs, there are proper timings and languages present on their website.”

A healthy sleep cycle is the most important thing. There are many grounding exercises that can be helpful in dealing with overwhelming stress and anxiety,” she added.

Suicide which accounts for the fourth leading cause of death amongst the youth is an alarming issue in the country, for a population where 65 per cent of people are under 35 years of age. It is one of the leading causes of fatalities. A national policy on suicide prevention is an imperative step towards fulfilling India’s commitment to health in general and mental health in particular as well as towards achieving the World Health Organization’s Sustainable Development Goals.

As per the abstract by these two students, mathematicians have long insisted that any assertion that the Pythagorean theorem can be proved using trigonometry is logical fallacy. Logical fallacy, also known as circular reasoning, is the term used when someone tries to prove an idea with the idea itself. When this occurs, the end of an argument comes back to the beginning without proving itself.

The book, The Pythagorean Proposition by Elisha Loomis, which contains the largest known collection of theorem proofs, “flatly states that ‘there are no trigonometric proofs because all the fundamental formulae of trigonometry are themselves based upon the truth of the Pythagorean theorem, " the abstract says.&nbsp;

In the abstract, they counter the arguments saying “that isn’t quite true.” The duo said, “We present a new proof of Pythagoras’s Theorem which is based on a fundamental result in trigonometry – the Law of Sines – and we show that the proof is independent of the Pythagorean trig identity sin2x+cos2x=1.”&nbsp;

In other words, they say they could demonstrate the theorem without employing to circular reasoning and by simply utilising trigonometry.

These girls, Jackson and Johnson of St Mary’s Academy, gave a presentation of their findings at the American Mathematical Society south-eastern chapter’s semi-annual meeting in Georgia.

The decision to give a holiday week to find love was taken by colleges of the Fan Mei Education Group. All of the group's vocational schools train students for employment in the aviation sector. The training is given to prepare students to become future pilots, air traffic controllers or flight attendants.&nbsp;

The Mianyang Aviation Vocational College in a statement on 23 March said, “The school implements the spring break system in the hope that students can learn to love nature, love life, and enjoy love." It urged the college students to “walk out of campus, get in touch with nature, and with your heart feel the beauty of spring.”

Meanwhile, the Qingdao Aviation Technology Vocational College said the students ought to enjoy the flowers. The spring break from April 1 to 7 was to “enjoy the flowers and to fall in love,” it said.&nbsp;

A person on the Chinese social media site Weibo, reacting to this unique holiday, said,&nbsp;“I’m sure this is just another attempt to push people into having more babies.”&nbsp;

Every year, the holiday used to be just for one day, to mark the national tomb-sweeping festival known as the Qingming Festival, which falls on April 5 this year. But the festival is now extended to a full love-blown spring week.&nbsp;

NAEP said reading scores had dropped to 1992 levels while four in 10 eighth-grade students failed to have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts. 38 per cent of students scored 'below basic' scores in mathematics which was significantly worse than the 2019 figures when it stood at 31 per cent. In the state of Cleveland, the drop was the steepest as fourth-grade reading saw a decline of 16 points. Moreover, not a single state saw any major improvement in the average test scores of the students. According to NAEP. the survey was conducted on hundreds of thousands of fourth and eight graders and showed that decades of academic growth were erased and racial disparities widened. Amid protests by various student organizations in Kerala, the state Government has taken up the matter with the Central government and the National Testing Authority, which conducts the NEET exam. Kerala's Higher Education Minister R.Bindu wrote to the Union Education Minister and the Chairperson of the NTA, demanding action and to ensure that such incidents don't recur in future.&nbsp;

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken cognisance of this incident and written to the NTA to conduct an independent inquiry and take action. According to the Ministry, sports or other outside activities that expose students to direct sunlight should be altered in the early morning. It was suggested that school assemblies be held in a covered location or in classrooms with shorter intervals.&nbsp;

According to the Ministry, comparable precautions may be used during dispersal after school has ended.

In an advisory the ministry, urged school officials to limit outside activities and ensure that student stay hydrated during the school hours. It further stated that teaching and non-teaching staffs to be trained to administer first aid in case a student suffers of mild heat-stroke.&nbsp;

Avishkar Hyperloop, a student-led team from India, has secured funding and technical support from a private company to take forth their 'Hyperloop Pod' developmental efforts.

Based at IIT-Madras in Chennai, the team comprises 70 members who belong to as many as 11 diverse Engineering disciplines.

Hyperloop is a futuristic mode of transport that aims to facilitate extremely rapid travel by using specially designed capsules (vehicles or pods) that travel in a vacuum tube, running the entire length between two distant locations. The proposed speed of this hyperloop technology is expected to be well over 1,100Kmph.

IIT-Madras has claimed&nbsp;that the hyperloop model proposed by Team Avishkar can achieve a top speed of over 1,200 kilometres per hour. The institute added that the team is spearheading Hyperloop Tube research in India and has already patented a novel and cost-effective tube design.

The team is also constructing a 500-meter-long hyperloop test facility, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 at the Institute's Discovery campus on the outskirts of Chennai.&nbsp;

“The vacuum tube, when developed, will be the first of its kind in academia anywhere globally and would be on par with the test facility of the commercial entity, Virgin Hyperloop One in the US. As such, ours would be the only one of its kind available in public, which we intend to utilise to organise international hyperloop competitions" said Prof. V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.&nbsp;

L&amp;T Technology Services Limited (LTTS) will be offering technical guidance across multiple facets of engineering to the students involved in the project.&nbsp;

Besides taking part in international events and competitions that deal with the research and development of hyperloop pods, the team from IIT-M is also working on incorporating further technological advancements into their existing hyperloop pod prototype.

Under `Operation Ganga` to rescue Indian citizens from Ukraine`s neighbouring countries, about 18 thousand Indians have been brought back by special flights so far.

410 Indians were brought back on Tuesday by special Civilian flights from Ukraine`s neighbouring countries by 2 special civilian flights from Suceava, said the Ministery of Civil Aviation press release.

With this, about 18,000 Indians have been brought back through the special flights which began on February 22, 2022.The number of Indians airlifted by 75 special civilian flights goes up to 15521.&nbsp;

IAF had flown 12 missions to bring back 2467 passengers, as part of Operation Ganga, and carried over 32-tonne relief material, read the release.The humanitarian toll has increased amid Russian military operations in Ukraine that was launched on February 24. As per the UN, around 1.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has forced hundreds and thousands, including Nepali nationals, to flee to the neighbouring countries while many remaining stranded in the war-torn country are awaiting instructions to evacuate the country.&nbsp;

The Nepal government has been coordinating with the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) to evacuate its citizens from Ukraine.&nbsp;

The government and the NRNA have recently formed a high-level committee to support the stranded Nepalis. &nbsp;

Chief patron and founder president of NRNA&nbsp;National Coordination Council (NCC)&nbsp;Poland,&nbsp;Bodha Raj Subedi spoke to WION and expressed concerns over the safety of Nepalis in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Subedi said that over 500 Nepali nationals have left Ukraine and moved to various countries, including Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, among others.

“We got to know that there are 800-900 Nepali nationals in Ukraine, of them more than 500 have moved to different countries. On record, there were only 400 Nepali nationals in Ukraine and later we were told there are more. Many Nepalis moved to Ukraine just before the crisis so there is no record of them but still, we are trying to evacuate them,” Subedi told WION.&nbsp;

He acknowledged that the tense situation in the country is making it difficult to carry out rescue operation.&nbsp;

“There are around 60 Nepali nationals whom we were able to contact still stranded in Kyiv and in other parts of Ukraine. However, we are not aware of others,” he added.&nbsp;

Subedi said many Nepalis do not wish to go home and are rather ready to seek shelter in neighbouring countries.&nbsp;

“I personally guided them from the Ukrainian border to Poland. I provided shelter and food to almost 235 Nepalis and now one-third of them have moved to other countries like Germany. While almost 60 are still with me. There were majorly students and workers and a few families with children,” he added.&nbsp;

Subedi, who has been living in Poland for over 30 years now, said, “We do not have many financial and human resources to help a large number of people. However, we have also helped a few Nigerians and to almost 20 Ukrainians with shelter and food.”

He also confirmed that a Nepali national named Pratap Basnet has joined Ukrainian Army and has decided to fight for the country.&nbsp;

In a video message, Basnet said, “Ukraine is fighting a war against Russia now. As a true patriot I decided to line up on Ukraine's side, in this war to safeguard the sovereignty,” Basnet said, adding, “Ukraine is in dire need of assistance at this time. I am proud to be part of the Ukraine army and fight the war.”

The NRNA Poland has confirmed that the Indian government has rescued two Nepali nationals from Ukraine.&nbsp;

“The Indian government has rescued two Nepali nationals. The Nepal Embassy in Berlin is coordinating with the Ukrainian officials to help and evacuate the rest of Nepalis,” Subedi said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Issuing an advisory, the Embassy of Nepal in Germany, said, “Nepali nationals who are still stranded in Kyiv, Kharkiv or elsewhere in Ukraine and are in contact with the Indian community or individual friends, may join them for evacuation or translocation to the western and southern territory.”

Some of Ukraine's state-run universities are well-known for providing high-quality education, and Indian parents choose to send their children to these institutions rather than pay a high cost for a lesser-known private medical college in India.&nbsp;

Fees are lower than in India

Ukrainian medical colleges are a godsend for students who are unable to get seats in government colleges or afford the hefty prices charged by private institutions in India.&nbsp;

A six-year medical degree in Ukraine costs Rs 1.7 million, less than private medical colleges in India, and is a popular choice for those who do not have the grades to enter publicly-funded Indian institutions.

Licence to practice in India

When students return to India with foreign MBBS degrees, they must take the National Board of Examinations' Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) to receive a licence to practise medicine in India.

Nearly 4,000 students with medical degrees from Ukraine take the FMGE each year, but only about 700 pass.

However, the lower pass rate does not dissuade students from enrolling in Ukrainian universities.&nbsp;

I am a migrant who moved from my home town of Gorakhpur, first for my studies and then for my job. 
 
Why do we migrate?

Our best and brightest go to the United States, many people from Punjab&nbsp;to Canada, people from Kerala&nbsp;to the Middle East, and poor labourers to wherever they can find work.

We migrate for better opportunities, something that the local milieu does not provide us with.

Simply put, it's for a better life, to be what we would rather be, rather than be content with circumstances.

If you understand this, then you will understand why Indian students go to places like Ukraine to study medicine, engineering, etc.

The online, and often offline, chatter that I hear against Indian students who are stuck in Ukraine due to the war with Russia reminds me of the same outrage I heard when poor migrants made the arduous journey back home during the first COVID lockdown.

Also, these doctors will have to pass the screening test administered by Medical Council of India (MCI) after their degree to practice medicine in India.

Every year, 14 million students in India sit for class 12 exams, with over 1.4 million students aspiring for a medical seat constituting even a good percentage of this total. This is an extremely consequential number. So, we have to scoff at the 20,000 or so students who have the privilege to go study abroad and add to medical professionals in India? On what basis? 
 
Indian colleges have approximately 1,18,316 MBBS seats per year. Where is the 1,18, 317th aspirant to go? 
 
Is she any less worthy than the 20-odd thousand aspirants above her in the merit list? I would say no, because if one in 10 is going to be selected, these exams are programmed as elimination tests, not selection tests. 
 
So where are these 'rejects', with perfectly decent intellects, supposed to go? 
 
If they are able to afford it, they go to places like Ukraine, if not much more expensive places. There is never an outrage if you hear someone go and attend an American college for any degree that will cost you way, way more than in places like Ukraine. Hence, students go there and will continue to go there even after this tragic war is over. 
 
So, why the hypocrisy? 
 
We see these students as the privileged lot. They are out there to buy their degrees, people think, with no proof whatsoever that they work any less hard than any medical student in India. Yes, their family money is paying for their education. That is true for most of our middle class and upper class households. Heck, even a poor migrant would rather send her daughter to an English-medium school if she could, and she should! What's criminal about this aspiration? What makes them the villains in our eyes? 
 
Oh, why did they not leave before the Russian attack on Ukraine?

Yes, of course, you expect that, when the whole world was caught off guard with this war, these 20 somethings should have been able to predict what was going to happen!

They may have had their exams, but they just believed when everyone said, "Arey, war nahi hogi." (There won't be any war).

But the government asked them to return!! Have you seen some of the advisories that western nations have given to India from time to time? When was the last time you checked the travel advisory when you planned a foreign trip?

The most legitimate criticism that I have seen is that this was the Indian "chalta hai, kuch nahi hoga" (nothing will happen) approach in full action. Then, by that standard, we are all guilty of so many things. 
 
So, stop this toxic culture of mocking people in trouble.

We, as Indians, should put an end to the poisonous culture of belittling individuals who are in difficulty.

Higher education needs to be democratised.

Higher fees and paid seats are the lifeblood of private colleges. Government intervention is required to make medical education more accessible.

Most Indian families argue that meritorious students don't need to pay their way to a degree. That can be a principled stand or just the fact that most people can't afford a private version of such degrees, in India or anywhere.

This is not to say the poor can suck it. Let the rich study. No, no, no....I am just pointing out the fact that in India, PhDs and students with masters degrees would rather apply to be constables or janitors in the name of government service than actually make better use of the privilege they have had of a degree and education they have obtained.

The failure rates both in numbers and years lost by our young for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), many state PSCs, Railway jobs or any government job than doing something else is genocidal, that is where our population dividend has gone to die!

I would rather appreciate these 20,000 or so students who had the opportunity to do something better and took it, and for that I support them.
