Gurusubramanian, counsellor for the High Commission of India in Ottawa, said some Indian international students were looking at other options besides Canada due to "concerns, in the recent past, regarding lack of residential and adequate teaching facilities" at some Canadian institutions.</p>

<p>Indians have formed the largest group of international students in Canada in recent years, with more than 41% - or 225,835 - of all permits going to them in 2022.</p>

<p>International students are a cash cow for Canadian universities as they bring in about C$22 billion ($16.4 billion) annually and the slowdown will be a blow to the institutions.</p>

<p>In June, Canada said there were "credible" allegations linking Indian agents to the murder of Nijjar in a Vancouver suburb. India has rejected that allegation. Canadian authorities have yet to charge anyone for the killing.</p>

<p>Last year, the US&nbsp;Justice Department charged a 52-year-old man who had worked with an Indian government employee with plotting to assassinate a New York City resident who advocated for a Sikh sovereign state in northern India.</p>

<p>“We’ve worked around the clock to strike the best balance in Australia’s migration system,” Clare O’Neil said.</p>

<p>“The government’s targeted reforms are already putting downward pressure on net overseas migration, and will further contribute to this expected decline,” O’Neil said.</p>

<p>The decision comes after net immigration was expected to have peaked at a record 510,000 in 2022-23. Official data showed it was forecast to fall to about a quarter of a million in 2024-25 and 2025-26, roughly in line with pre-Covid levels, reports Reuters news agency.</p>

<p>O’Neil said the increase in net overseas migration in 2022-23 was mostly driven by international students.</p>

<h2><strong>Mired in&nbsp;bureaucratic problems</strong></h2>

<p>The Albanese government have been trying to overhaul the immigration system as it continues to get mired in bureaucratic problems.</p>

<p>For example, the occupation codes used on the back end of Australia's migration, tax and other systems have not been added since 2013.</p>

Australia announces stricter visa rules for students, workers as it prepares to overhaul immigration system

<p>Canada is intensifying financial requirements for international students seeking study permits, with Immigration Minister Marc Miller almost doubling the mandatory proof of funds. As part of the changes, the minimum bank account requirement for study permit applicants will increase from $10,000 to $20,635 in 2024, in addition to the tuition fees paid by international students, Canada's local media reports said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, those who have already submitted study permit applications by December 7, 2023, and those currently in Canada will be allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week until April 2024.&nbsp;The temporary lifting of the 20-hour work limit for international students, in place since last year, will now be extended until April 30, 2024.</p>

<p>In response to the high immigration and housing crisis, Miller has issued a stern warning, threatening significant restrictions on visas if provinces and educational institutions do not address the issue promptly.</p>

<p>Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Miller said that the federal government is willing to take drastic measures, including limiting visas, to ensure that designated learning institutions provide sufficient support for international students.</p>

<p>Vrinda Kathore came back to India from Canada in September, leaving her education mid-way, before paying her second-year tuition fee. She was pursuing a post-graduate diploma in healthcare management. Sharing her experience in the country as an international student, she unveiled the sorry state of affairs in Canada's education system, compounded by high inflation and rent costs.</p>

<p>"I landed there in April 2022, I was studying at Cape Breton University and around that time the influx of immigration was not as bad as it got in the last 12-16 months," she told WION while speaking about her 'Canadian experience'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When she landed in Canada, Kathore could find accommodation for herself as she already had it planned. She said there were 500 students in that intake and in the next four months, which was the September intake, there was a huge influx of about 3,500 students.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That is when the housing and rental crisis began for me," she reflected on her time in Canada.</p>

<p>"In September 2022, when so many students came in, this was an opportunity for Canadian landlords to make money."&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kathore said the inflation is very high, so the landlords are also making money off the students.&nbsp;"In January 2023, the rent started to go way higher. Nobody was stopping these 'slumlords'."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Was forced to take classes in cinema halls</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The most shocking thing, she pointed out, was that even when it was just 500 students, they were asked to take classes in cinema theatres.</p>

<p>"My first semester, I spent studying at the cinema theatre. So they did not have infrastructure and then they brought in more than 3,500 students.&nbsp;So they started renting out cinema theatres. So people would go and watch movies there in the evenings and in the morning the universities were renting it out as classrooms."&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kathore, along with her other fellow mates, protested on Facebook pages.</p>

<p>Kathore kept making friends from the new batches to understand the reality of Indian students studying in Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I heard complaints. Students are complaining that the university, without asking for their permission, shuffled their schedule, which the students made for themselves."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Everybody makes their schedule as per their part-time job availability," Kathore said while speaking about how haywire things were.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Health crisis in Canada</strong></h2>

<p>"In Canada, all hospitals and medical facilities are run by the government and there is no option for private hospitals. There is a shortage of staff but unless there is an emergency, you will not get the services," she shared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kathore, who had aspirations to work in Canada for at least 7-8 years, said&nbsp; the wait line to get a family doctor was nearly two years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Once someone gets the family doctor, they have to do the general checkups. He would then refer me to other doctors... many times people just sit in the hospital with broken hands."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said that she had&nbsp;met a lot of Canadians who go to America to get treatments if they get some serious health issues.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Indians hired for cheap labour</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Kathore said that Canadian universities promise good-paying jobs and co-op programmes. "Ideally the universities must help, but they do not."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They say that for placement, one needs to have a Canadian experience. Once we get in there, we are just called in for cheap labour. We are getting jobs at Tim Horton coffee shops. One is also given the job of a nanny at a medical facility, which is a National Occupation Classification (NOC) C job."</p>

<p>"We are called there to address the labour shortage. I am investing $30,000 but there is no ROI. The education system makes you feel that you don't deserve."</p>

<p>More than half a million South Korean students on Thursday (Nov 16) sat for the annual nationwide college entrance exam while&nbsp;officials took extraordinary measures, including halting flights and keeping police on standby, with even the stock market opening later than usual. This was also the first time since the Covid pandemic that the students were allowed to take the exam without masks.</p>

<p>The restrictions only give a sense of how important the&nbsp;test is, as it is often considered life-defining in the highly competitive South Korean society.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is this ‘life-defining’ exam?</strong></h2>

<p>This year, nearly 505,000 high school students, graduates and others signed up to take the nine-hour, single-day, and five-session College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) held at 1,279 test sites across the country, according to the education ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The test is considered crucial for securing spots in top universities and also key for elevated social status, lucrative careers, and in some cases even marriage prospects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, enormous pressure is placed on students in South Korea. The country&nbsp;is already known for being highly competitive, which&nbsp;has been blamed for contributing to teenage depression and suicide rates which are among the highest in the world.</p>

<h2><strong>‘I’m nervous’</strong></h2>

<p>“I’m nervous and trembling because what I’ve been studying for three years ends with this exam today,” Lee Min-yup told AFP before going to take the test at Kyungbock High School in central Seoul.</p>

<p>Outside schools in South Korea, parents cheered for their children, hugging them and wiping away tears. While others were seen chanting phrases including “Success in Suneung,” which is the local name for the exam.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I feel so nervous. Maybe I’m more nervous (than my daughter),” said Kim Mi-jae, mother of an 18-year-old student in Seoul, as quoted by Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Extraordinary measures’</strong></h2>

<p>Every year, South Korean officials take extraordinary measures to prevent any disturbances during the test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This time around, the country’s transportation ministry imposed a nationwide 35-minute ban on all aircraft takeoffs and landings, aside from emergency situations, so that students are not disturbed during the listening comprehension portion of the English test.</p>

<p>More than 90 flights had to be rescheduled because of the exam, on Thursday, as per AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Public offices and major businesses were requested to adjust their opening hours to 10:00 am (local time) or later to avoid traffic congestion and ensure students arrived at their venues for the exam on time which began at 8:40 am (local time).</p>

<p>The stock market also opened an hour later than usual to help ease the traffic. This year was also different as the test-takers were not required to wear face masks, unlike the previous three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police and regional government officials were on standby to help students running late for the exam reach their test sites on&nbsp;time.</p>

<p>The difficulty of this year’s exam has yet to be confirmed, but South Korean officials have said it would not include the so-called “killer questions” which are said to typically be drawn from material not covered in public school curriculum.</p>

<p>In the Indian state of West Bengal, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College in the capital Kolkata, has told undergraduate students to sign an undertaking declaring that they would refrain from wearing torn or artificially torn jeans to the institution. Similarly, the parents or guardians of the students have also been requested to sign a similar affidavit.</p>

<p>The undertaking that the students have to sign reads - "Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dresses. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises.”</p>

<p>The prohibition on students and staff wearing indecent clothes, like torn jeans is not new. A notice issued last year read, "No student or staff can enter inside college premises wearing torn jeans or artificially torn jeans. It is strictly prohibited inside the college campuses."</p>

<p>The principal of AJC Bose College told Indian Express,&nbsp;"Last year, we issued a similar advisory for our students. But despite such notice, some students were seen coming to the college in torn jeans. We don’t want our students to come to the campus in such attire." The head added that&nbsp;the college would not allow entry to any student found wearing indecent clothes.</p>

<p>Following this notice, students at the colleges demonstrated against the authorities and said they wouldn't&nbsp;follow the rules.</p>

<p>Since students didn't follow the previously issued advisory, the college this year is aiming to&nbsp;make a strong impact, which is why&nbsp;new students will have to sign the undertaking to get into the college.</p>

<p>Students are free to wear any type of outfit outside the college premises but they will have to follow the rules when in college. The principal also claimed that the undertaking would enforce strict discipline in the college.</p>

<p>The notification has different opinions as another student of the college did not find the rule problematic because several other colleges have the rule of following a dress code.</p>

A notice issued last year read, "No student or staff can enter inside college premises wearing torn jeans or artificially torn jeans. It is strictly prohibited inside the college campuses." The principal of AJC Bose College told Indian Express, "Last year, we issued a similar advisory for our students. But despite such notice, some students were seen coming to the college in torn jeans. We don’t want our students to come to the campus in such attire." The head added that the college would not allow entry to any student found wearing indecent clothes. Following this notice, students at the colleges demonstrated against the authorities and said they wouldn't follow the rules. Since students didn't follow the previously issued advisory, the college this year is aiming to make a strong impact, which is why new students will have to sign the undertaking to get into the college. Students are free to wear any type of outfit outside the college premises but they will have to follow the rules when in college. The principal also claimed that the undertaking would enforce strict discipline in the college. If education is properly imparted, students are responsible enough to judge what to wear and what not to at an institute."
