"Soldiers are currently in the bushes fighting the bandits. We will do all we can to ensure all the abducted children are reclaimed," he said.

National police spokesman Frank Mbas said "additional operational and investigative assets to support the ongoing search and rescue operations in Kankara," had been deployed.

Masari said it was still not clear how many students were "in the hands of the bandits" and how many had managed to escape.

"The school has a population of 839 and so far, we are yet to account for 333 students," Masari told a federal government delegation in his office on Sunday.

"We are still counting because more are still coming out of the forest," said the governor.

"Up till this moment, no one can give a precise figure of the children abducted", he said, adding that students who escaped confirmed some of their colleagues were taken.

Masari directed the school to take a headcount of the students to determine those who went back home.&nbsp;

'Cowardly bandits'

Osama Aminu Maale was one of the students who escaped the abductors and returned to his parents.

"There were a total of 520 of us that were taken by the gunmen from the school," the 18-year old student, told AFP on the phone.&nbsp;

"After they took us away we stopped inside the bus where they made the older students take a headcount. We counted 520," he said.&nbsp;

The hostages were split into groups and before Maale and four others escaped.

"One of the gunmen hit me repeatedly when I failed to keep up with the rest of the group due to my failing health before he let me trail behind, giving me the chance to escape", he said.

Since the attack, all secondary schools in the state have been shut.

UNICEF in a statement on Sunday said it "condemns in the strongest possible terms this brutal attack and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all children and their return to their families".

The global children body said it was "deeply concerned about these acts of violence."

"Attacks on schools are a violation of children’s rights. This is a grim reminder that abductions of children and widespread grave violations of children’s rights continue to take place in northern Nigeria."

UNICEF however commended the Nigerian government for deploying security forces to rescue the students.

Buhari on Saturday urged security forces to arrest the gunmen.

"I strongly condemn the cowardly bandits' attack on innocent children at the Science School, Kankara. Our prayers are with the families of the students, the school authorities and the injured," he said.

"The new NEP is a means of fulfilling New India, New Expectations, New Requirements. Behind it is the hard work of the last 4-5 years, people of every field, every genre, every language have worked on it. But this work has not been completed yet," he said.

"Now the real work has started. Now we have to implement the National Education Policy in the same effective manner. And we will do this work together," he added.

He also said that every region in the country has some speciality, some traditional art, workmanship which requires "deep skills" and are very famous and the students residing in those areas should see and learn how they are produced so that they form an emotional bonding, respect and in future can also join these industries.&nbsp;

However, if students are required to either continue their current studies or commence a new course by distance or blended learning due to COVID-19, they will still be eligible to switch into the Graduate route on a concessionary basis if they spent some time studying outside the UK,"&nbsp;notes the Home Office guidance issued this week.

The students will only be avail these benefits&nbsp;if they enter the UK before 6 April 2021 and complete the final semester of their studies in the UK,"&nbsp;the guidance read.

He said 86 per cent of the brain grows by the age of eight, adding that issues associated with the early phase of children need to be assessed and evaluated carefully and any kind of new approach needs a scientific basis.

"Development of a brain is a continuous process within these eight years, and if you dont stimulate the brain properly by continuous interactions, then obviously you are missing a chance of really getting the best out of youngsters in terms of brain boat and performance, the recipient of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan said.

"There are issues of these which need to be analysed very carefully. Just the kind of solutions that we talk of for higher education like online and so on may not be the way to deal when it comes to dealing with the early phase of children, the former Rajya Sabha member said.

Creativity can't be transferred through online classes: Kasturirangan

An eminent scientist on Sunday swuggested a shift system in schools to prevent spread of the coronavirus and continuing with online classes with focus on project-based learning in a big way to promote creativity.

Former Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) V K Saraswat supported the idea of online teaching in the absence of regular classes in view of closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, he said it should be organised in far better and more interactive ways so that delivery of knowledge can be better.

The NITI Aayog member stressed the need for schools to have a strategy when they reopen keeping in mind the safety of students.

"May be half the strength in a class can come in the morning and others in the afternoon. Or students of first to sixth standard can come in the morning and seventh to tenth can come in the afternoon, Saraswat told PTI.

Reopening strategy will have to be worked out by the education department, added the former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister.

Along with normal classes, online education should be continued as a regular system in future, and promoted in a big way because that is the way technology is going to help delivery of knowledge, he added.

Saraswat also raised the pitch for reforms in the education sector, saying India is facing the problem of rote learning. 
Rote learning has to give way for more project-based teaching, he underlined.

Children should be made to work on projects at home and that can be done online. That will also support the changeover from rote learning to creative learning.

I personally believe the education delivery system -- primary, secondary and college levels -- has to be completely changed because creativity in India is less and creativity would come only if we replace rote learning with project-based learning, Saraswat said.

On some academics holding the view that the marks-based model is killing the education system in India as it does not promote creativity, he said evaluation of any outcome is important.

Even when we perform in our normal way, evaluation cannot be replaced. Otherwise, you cant find out how much you have succeeded in delivery. Certainly evaluation cannot be dispensed with.

He did not agree with some experts, who favoured a single, uniform system for school education in India by dispensing with CBSE, ICSE and state boards.

I am not for normalising everything in life. I personally believe variety should be there. This concept of one kind of a system is okay for a Communist society, society which was trying to drive everybody like a herd, he said.

Creativity comes with variety, and there is nothing wrong in having different kinds of education system, but one thing which is important is we have to integrate vocational training as part of the education curriculum," Saraswat said.

Vocational part cannot be kept away from the education system, he added.

CBSE will conduct its pending board exams of class Xth and class XIIth&nbsp;from July 01 to July 15, announced Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.

Some exams for classes Xth and XIIth had to be put on hold as the country went into a nation-wide lockdown due to coronavirus. The government has now decided to conduct these exams after two months.

When we show them live then they will know a lot of things about this eclipse," Sharma told ANI.

The celestial phenomenon was seen at 8.43 am in Kathmandu, at 8.38 am in Mahendranagar and at 8.48 am in Bhadrapur. The administration of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday condemned the "criminal" vandalism in the campus premises during the protest over hostel fee hike and said that it will take stringent actions against those found guilty.

"I condemn the undemocratic protests and vandalism being undertaken by the students. We have all the records. Chief Proctor Office (CPO) will take stringent actions against those who will be found guilty," Dean of Student Welfare, Umesh Kadam, told ANI.

He also urged the students to rejoin their academics and take their education seriously.

"I had also filed a complaint with the police because the students had blocked the ambulance and taken me hostage inside the ambulance. Police should file the FIR in the matter as soon as possible," Kadam said.

Associate Dean of Student Welfare Vandana Mishra, on the other hand, termed the protest and vandalism "undemocratic" and "criminal".

"This is undemocratic. Even the court has prohibited protest up to 100 meters of the administrative block. But they are sitting inside it. The way they have been vandalising the office of the Vice-Chancellor, the walls and the statue of the national icon Vivekanand is wrong. It is criminal," she said.

Mishra also said that she was gheraoed on Friday around 10:30 am, which continued till Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, Delhi Police also registered an FIR in connection with the "defacement of public property" at the campus as students continue their protest against hostel fee hike.

The Dhaka Tribune newspaper said the webpage contained 177 complaints, with at least 72 posted after Fahad's killing. Most of the complaints were against the BCL.

"These complaints were submitted to the BUET student welfare director three months ago," he told AFP.

Sweden-based Bangladesh rights activist Tasneem Khalil said the blocked webpage "confirmed in graphic detail how such torture has been a routine element in the daily lives of hundreds of BUET students."

He said the database "was posing a serious challenge to the government narrative that the killing of Abrar Fahad was just a stray incident", Khalil said.
