Shipping crude oil through key Gulf routes is becoming increasingly expensive as war-risk insurance premiums surge amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Tanker operators are slowing movements through sensitive chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz due to rising security threats and higher transit costs. Insurers have sharply raised premiums or withdrawn coverage altogether in some cases forcing shipowners to reassess voyages and contributing to tighter global oil flows and market volatility.

The US–Iran conflict has escalated further after reports claimed that Washington is preparing to target Iran-linked vessels operating in international waters. The move is seen as part of a broader maritime crackdown aimed at restricting Tehran’s oil and supply routes amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Iran War | Report: US Set to Intercept Iran-Linked Ships in International Waters

Iran says restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz have been reimposed after the United States maintained its naval blockade on Iranian-linked shipping and ports, escalating tensions in the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Tehran warned the strategic oil corridor would remain under strict military control until freedom of navigation for Iranian vessels is restored.

US-Iran War | Iran: Restrictions in Hormuz Reimposed Due to US Blockade

Iran is reportedly demanding $270 billion in war reparations while intensifying discussions around compensation mechanisms and transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz. The development has triggered global concern that the world’s most critical oil chokepoint could move toward a “pay-to-pass” system for commercial shipping.

India has reportedly urged Iran to ensure safe passage for Indian-flagged ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid rising regional tensions and repeated disruptions in maritime traffic. The request comes as concerns grow over shipping safety and energy security, with the vital oil chokepoint seeing increased instability.

India-Iran Ties: India Urges Iran to Allow Indian Ships Through Hormuz

Iran has accused the United States of “maritime piracy” over its blockade actions, stating that the Strait of Hormuz has been placed back under strict military control in response to escalating tensions. Tehran claims the move is necessary to protect its sovereignty and oil routes amid the US–Iran conflict.

US-Iran War: Tehran Blames US Piracy for Shutting Strait; Oil Route Back Under Military Grip

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has asserted that Iran remains in full control of the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing U.S. blockade and maritime pressure. His remarks come amid escalating US–Iran tensions and repeated warnings over the world’s most critical oil chokepoint.

US-Iran War | Ghalibaf: Iran Remains in Control of Hormuz Despite US Blockade

Global oil markets are facing a severe shock as reports indicate that more than 500 million barrels of crude supply have been cut over the past 50 days amid the US–Iran conflict. The disruption linked to repeated instability in the Strait of Hormuz has tightened global supply, triggered price volatility, and raised fears of a prolonged energy crisis as shipping routes remain under threat and diplomatic tensions continue to escalate.

Tensions in the US–Iran conflict escalated further as former President Donald Trump held a high-level meeting with top officials amid renewed reports that Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz again. The move has intensified fears over global oil supply disruptions and maritime security in the world’s most critical energy chokepoint.

Iran has announced a partial reopening of its eastern airspace following the ongoing US–Iran ceasefire, allowing international transit flights to resume through select corridors after weeks of disruption. The move signals cautious steps toward normalization in regional aviation routes, though many airlines remain wary and continue to reroute flights amid lingering security concerns.

Iran’s military has announced that the strategic Strait of Hormuz has been closed again, citing the continuing United States naval blockade as the trigger behind the move. The development sharply raises tensions across the Gulf and threatens a key global energy corridor through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply normally passes.

Iran has yet again mocked US President Donald Trump over a series of posts made by him on his Truth Social platform after Tehran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The development came after a 10-day ceasefire was reached between Israel and Lebanon on Friday (Apr 17). Following the diplomatic move, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced that the crucial waterway was “completely open” for all commercial vessels. In response, Trump posted on Truth Social, “IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE. Tehran on Saturday (April 18) warned it could once again shut the Strait of Hormuz if the United States continues its naval blockade of Iranian ports, just hours after the crucial shipping route was reopened following a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon. The reopening of the strait had boosted global markets on Friday and raised hopes of de-escalation, with US President Donald Trump telling news agency AFP that a peace agreement was “very close.” He also claimed that Iran had agreed to transfer its enriched uranium, one of the main sticking points in negotiations.&nbsp;"We're going to get it by going in with Iran, with lots of excavators," Trump told a gathering of the conservative Turning Point USA movement in Phoenix. Iran, however, rejected the assertion, insisting its enriched uranium stockpile would not be moved. <h2>France, UK to lead 'defensive' force for Strait of Hormuz</h2>Meanwhile, France and Britain announced plans to lead a multinational mission to safeguard navigation in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The mission will be defensive in nature and deployed only after a lasting peace is achieved in the region. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Macron confirmed the initiative during international talks held in Paris, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted trade through the key shipping route.&nbsp; The conference, largely conducted via video link, brought together representatives from 49 countries across Europe and Asia, including several heads of state and government. Notably, neither the United States nor Iran participated in the discussions, as both are directly involved in the ongoing conflict. Iran had earlier imposed a blockade following the outbreak of war with the US and Israel on February 28, leading to global concerns over inflation, fuel shortages, and food supply disruptions.&nbsp; However, markets showed signs of relief after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on X that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to commercial vessels as long as a ceasefire continues.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/frenchman-convicted-for-israel-hit-and-run-case-shot-dead-in-paris-1776446070548/embed">https://www.wionews.com/videos/frenchman-convicted-for-israel-hit-and-run-case-shot-dead-in-paris-1776446070548/embed</a><h2>'Neutral' mission</h2>Starmer said the multinational force could be deployed "as soon as conditions allowed". "This will be strictly peaceful and defensive as a mission to reassure commercial shipping and support mine clearance," he said, adding that "over a dozen countries have already offered to contribute assets".&nbsp;Leaders welcomed Tehran’s announcement but called for a "full, unconditional reopening by all the parties", Macron said. The French president emphasized that the mission is "neutral" and "completely separate from the belligerents" involved in the conflict. Meloni, who attended the meeting in person, said Italy was "ready to participate" but stressed that hostilities must first end. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also supported the initiative, noting that it would be "desirable" for the United States to join the mission.
