Millions without power as storm hits Russia, Ukraine

Three days after the storm knocked down power lines in Sao Paulo, half a million residents of Brazil's largest city are still in the dark. When the storm first hit, it knocked down hundreds of trees which disrupted power lines, cutting the power supply to 2.1 million people in the metropolitan area, according to energy company ENEL

"The storm was terrible. I had no electricity, no cellphone and no fuel on Friday," said Denilson Laurindo, a carpenter, as quoted by Reuters. He expressed his displeasure at the city for not pruning trees in the streets.

"I saw the tree fall and hit the transformer post. There was an explosion and then the lights went out," said Thiago Gonzalez who rented a room in a neighbourhood nearby just so that he and his wife could take a hot shower and sleep in air conditioning.

Morumbi, the neighbourhood where Gonzalez lives is one of the worst hit. Schools were cancelled on Monday (November 6) in such neighbourhoods.

It said it would also investigate if ENEL had enough staff to tackle emergencies.

"Alright, it was an unusually strong storm. But what is shocking is that year after year there is not enough investment in burying the power cables. It is all out of date," he said.

Brazil: Half million citizens without power three days after storm

Tropical Storm Pilar loomed ominously off the Pacific Coast of Central America on Wednesday, provoking heavy rains that washed away crops and displaced hundreds of people as the death toll rose to four.

Since Sunday, three people have died due to the storm in El Salvador and one in neighboring Honduras, according to civil protection authorities.

In both countries and in Guatemala, hundreds of people have been evacuated from high-risk areas and taken to temporary shelters.

Pilar was about 160 miles (260 kilometers) off the coast of El Salvador Wednesday, generating winds of about 60 miles per hour, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a bulletin.

"The center of Pilar will continue to move away from the coast of Central America this afternoon and tonight," it said, adding that "gradual weakening" was forecast for the coming days.

However, the NHC warned that "heavy rainfall and flash flooding (are) still a threat over portions of Central America."

Tropical Storm Pilar: At least four killed after storm dumps heavy rains on Central America

Hurricane Otis made landfall near the resort city of Acapulco on the southern Pacific Coast of Mexico on Wednesday. The Category 5 hurricane threatens to bring record winds and rainfall that could create a dreadful scenario of flooding and mudslides.

Hurricane Otis made landfall near the resort city of Acapulco on the southern Pacific Coast of Mexico on Wednesday. The Category 5 hurricane threatens to bring record winds and rainfall that could create a dreadful scenario of flooding and mudslides. The National Hurricane Center reported that the maximum sustained winds rose to 165 miles per hour with strong gusts when Hurricane Otis hit the Mexico beach at about 12:25 am local time. Hurricane Otis originated in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday and evolved as a Category 1 storm on Tuesday. Forecasters believe the potentially catastrophic storm is the most powerful one Mexico has ever witnessed. Acapulco, a massive port city and famous tourist destination with a population of 852,000, lies in Hurricane Otis' route. The storm hit the Mexico coast as the fishing villages and beach resorts gear up for peak winter season. On Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center called it a "serious situation for the Acapulco metropolitan area." They warned people about the Hurricane reaching near or over the city. ALSO READ | Explained: Why is Israel putting Gaza's ground invasion on back-burner? On Tuesday, the authorities also issued a hurricane warning for the Pacific Coast in Guerrero, the beach town of Punta Maldonado and the resort city of Zihuatanejo. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the president of Mexico, has urged Guerrero residents to stay prepared for the storm. "Agree to move to shelters, stay in safe places, away from rivers, streams, ravines, and be alert," he said. Meanwhile, the National Coordination of Civil Protection said it evacuated citizens from dangerous areas to temporary shelters in Acapulco and Tecpán de Galeana. It advised people to avoid landslide-prone areas and crossing streams and flooded streets. As per the warning, the storm could produce life-threatening floods and mudslides in mountainous areas. The forecasters predicted a maximum rain of 16 inches across Guerrero and the western coastal section of Oaxaca through Thursday. However, Category 5 storms lose energy over shallower waters when they make landfall. They are tropical storms with wind speeds over 157 miles per hour, the rarest and strongest class in the Saffir-Simpson scale. "There are no hurricanes on record even close to this intensity for this part of Mexico," the National Coordination of Civil Protection added. Otis could be more devastating than Hurricane Pauline, a 1997 storm that caused mass destruction and killed more than 200 people. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Libya: Over 5,000 feared dead, nearly 10,000 missing as floods wipe out quarter of Derna city

Hundreds of people have been killed after Storm Daniel swept through the Mediterranean over the weekend, bringing strong winds and heavy floods to several countries, including Libya, over the past two days. The death toll was not immediately clear amid conflict reports ranging from hundreds to thousands of people, said a report by Reuters, on Monday (September 11) citing senior officials.

The storm in question also brought torrential rains and wreaked havoc in Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece.

About the victims

According to the head of the eastern Libyan government, Osama Hamad, more than 2,000 people have died in the coastal city of Derna and thousands of others were reported to be missing.

However, he did not give a source for his data and the figures could not be verified independently since the country is politically split east and west with two rival administrations in charge and crumbling public services since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising.

Hamad is the head of the government which is not internationally recognised and operates in the eastern regions of the country that are controlled by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).

The head of the Red Crescent aid group in the region said Derna’s death toll was expected to rise. “We recorded at least 150 deaths (in Derna) after the collapse of buildings. We expect death toll to rise to 250. The situation is very catastrophic,” Red Crescent’s Kais Fhakeri told Reuters.

Mohamed Massoud, a spokesman for the Benghazi-based administration in Libya, said that at least 150 people have been killed due to “flooding and torrential rains left by storm Daniel in Derna, Jabal al-Akhdar region and the suburbs of Al-Marj,” as quoted by AFP.

Massoud said that hundreds of residents are said to be trapped and rescuers, backed by the army, are trying to come to their aid. He added that the east Libyan authorities had “lost contact with nine soldiers during rescue operations”.

What do we know about the damage?

Reports citing images and videos by residents in the flood-stricken areas said that parts of the country are witnessing swamping roads and some buildings were also destroyed in Derna. The storm also swept through other settlements along the coast, including Libya’s second-biggest city of Benghazi.

Some images also show massive mudslides, collapsed buildings and entire neighbourhoods submerged under muddy water, reported AFP. Images posted by Almostkbal TV show a collapsed road between Sousse and Shahat, home to the Greek-founded and UNESCO-listed archaeological site Cyrene.

“Entire neighbourhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents...swept away by water,” Hamad told al-Masar TV.

Derna resident Saleh al-Obaidi told Reuters how he managed to flee with his family after houses in a valley near the city had collapsed. “People were asleep and woke up and found their homes surrounded by water,” he added.

Reuters citing witnesses said that the water level in Derna had reached three metres (10 feet).

Officials respond to disaster

Libya’s eastern-based parliament declared three days of mourning after the disaster. Reuters citing witnesses also said that search-and-rescue operations were ongoing and the authorities have declared a state of extreme emergency, closing schools and stores and imposing a curfew.

The United Nations in Libya said it was following the storm closely and would “provide urgent relief assistance in support of response efforts at local and national levels”.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of the interim western government in Tripoli, Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, announced three days of mourning in affected cities, calling them “disaster cities” and emphasised “the unity of all Libyans” in the face of the disaster.

Greece: At least 15 killed after Storm Daniel brings ‘most intense’ rainstorms since 1930

Greek rescue teams move into worst-hit flood villages, death toll from the region rises to at least 15.

Extreme flooding caused by storm Daniel devastates Greece

The impact of storm Daniel in Greece has been devastating. Floods, landslides and torrential rains have killed at least six people, leaving several missing. The Greek prime minister is scheduled to visit the flood-hit areas this weekend to analyse the situation at hand.

Deadly storm sweeps across Greece killing six

Typhoon Haikui toppled hundreds of trees, damaged coastal roads and dumped torrential rains across Taiwan Monday before it weakened into a severe storm and headed for southern China.

Haikui had initially appeared to depart the island but made a second landfall early Monday in southwest Kaohsiung, before it was downgraded to a severe tropical storm as it moved out into the Taiwan Strait.

There were no reports of deaths, but destruction was seen in coastal Taitung, a mountainous county in lesser-populated eastern Taiwan where the storm directly hit the day before.

"I've lived here for so long and I have never seen such wind gusts," said Chen Hai-feng, 55, a village chief in Taitung's Donghe township, where he was with an early-morning work crew removing trees from a road.

Although Haikui is considered to be less severe than previous storms, Chen said it felt more powerful.

"It came straight through us."

Workers carefully manoeuvred diggers to move downed tree branches and electrical wiring that had snapped and splayed across the rain-drenched road.

Further north in coastal Changbin township, workers ferried massive concrete blocks to a coastal highway that had partially collapsed from the force of waves slamming into it, hoping they would absorb the impact.

Heavy orange-coloured barriers were placed near the edge to prevent cars from skidding over on the slippery roads.

Haikui -- the first typhoon landfall in Taiwan in four years -- forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 people across the island, particularly from landslide-prone mountainous regions. Hundreds of flights were cancelled and businesses were closed.

More than 217,000 households temporarily lost power through Sunday and overnight. By midday Monday, 11,000 homes still had no electricity, while schools and businesses remained closed in 14 cities as torrential rain bucketed down.

A forecaster with Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said Haikui initially appeared to track away from the island and out to sea but made a second landfall in Kaohsiung at around 4:00 am (2000 GMT Sunday).

During the night "the centre of the typhoon was almost circling" the port city, but as it moved along the coastline "the structure of the typhoon is damaged by the terrain and gradually weakens", she said.

By mid-day, the storm had moved southwest of Taiwan's outlying island of Penghu, but was still bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the south and northeast.

In picturesque Hualien county, waterfalls cascaded down the lush cliffs along Taiwan's east coast, while market vendors in Keelung -- a northern port city surrounded by mountains -- braved the rain to sell fruit to raincoat-clad shoppers.

In Kaohsiung, the local government reported hundreds of toppled trees and flooding in dozens of locations, although the situation was easing as the storm departed and the weather conditions improved.

Nearly 80 people suffered injuries during the typhoon, according to authorities, though they were minor -- mostly due to fallen trees and car accidents.

Storm Idalia to intensify into major hurricane ahead of Florida landfall

Tropical storm Idalia is nearing hurricane strength and is forecast to become a hurricane, as it continues to be on track toward the Gulf Coast of Florida after lashing western Cuba. To know more watch this interview with Meteorologist and atmospheric scientist Dakota Smith.

Tropical storm approaches Florida

Western Cuba was lashed by tropical storm Idalia on Tuesday (August 29) and is likely to turn into a major hurricane as it moves towards the Gulf Coast in Florida, where evacuations have been ordered by the officials and residents have been appealed to start preparing for its expected landfall on Wednesday.

Idalia was churning around 80 miles (130 km) off Cuba's western tip as it barreled north, carrying the maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (112 kph), said the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre in its latest advisory.

The growing intensity of the storm and its northerly track has placed around 14 million Floridians under the threat of a hurricane, with warnings of tropical storm issued along the Gulf of Mexico.

Authorities stated that the chief hazard that the storm would pose to human life would be the increased height of seawater which may be driven into inundating low-lying coastal areas by high winds.

Storm surge warnings were put up across hundreds of miles of Gulf Coast shoreline, starting from the Sarasota area north through Tampa and leading to the sport-fishing haven of Indian Pass at the western end of Apalachicola Bay.

"Buckle up for this one," said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in a press conference on Monday afternoon, adding that he had already discussed the situation with director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deanne Criswell and US President Joe Biden.

"Do what you got to do. You still have time today. You have time for most of tomorrow," he added, appealing to Floridians to fully prepare for the dangerous situation ahead.

Cubans rush to evacuate coastal towns

Cubans hurriedly evacuated coastal towns, tied down fishing boats and emptied batten-down homes as Idalia reached the western end of the island on Monday.

The small fishing village of Guanimar was swamped by chocolate-brown floodwaters by mid-afternoon.

Residents were carried to higher grounds using decades-old buses, which had missing windows and floorboards, as winds howled and rattled the tin roofs of the houses and slammed fishing boats stranded in the mangroves.

"We've had two days of rain already," stated resident Yadira Alvarez, 34, as she made preparations for evacuating her five children. "We try to prepare, but no matter what we do everything will be soaked,” she added.

Storm Idalia lashes western Cuba as it intensifies into major hurricane

Saudi Arabia was hit by severe lightning storms and strong easterly winds on Tuesday (August 22) which led to widespread damage across the nation. The stormy weather's brunt was borne by the cities of Mecca and Jeddah, as well as several other regions.

Many dramatic videos of the strong storm were shared on social media platforms which showed the formidable strength of the wind which was so intense that it managed to remove heavy plastic barriers. The movement of Umrah pilgrims, who were present in the Grand Mosque of Mecca, was also threatened by the same gusts.

The videos, which showed the severity of the storm, documented the collapse of power poles amid torrential rain and storm on Asfan Road, northeast of Jeddah. In several video clips, electricity poles were seen leaning precariously over roads and showed a picture of the unstable weather condition.

Earlier reports suggested that Jeddah was enveloped in a dust storm as dense clouds of dust were seen filling the skies.

The death toll in China’s northern Hebei province has risen to 29, reported the country’s state media, on Friday (August 11), after record-breaking rains pummelled the region. Nearly 80 people have been killed across several Chinese provinces, including the capital city of Beijing since storm Doksuri, a former super typhoon, made landfall in southern Fujian province back in July, as per reports.

Death toll rises in Hebei

According to a report by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, citing officials as of August 10, “9 people have died due to disasters in Hebei Province, of which six were previously reported missing. There are still 16 missing.”

The media report also said that the rescue efforts to find those missing are still underway. According to a report by AFP, parts of Hebei, which borders the capital, were still caked in mud last week, while residents were seen scrambling to recover waterlogged belongings and clean up damaged homes.

Hebei: Beijing’s ‘moat’

The northern province was visited by Hebei province party chief Ni Yuefeng last week who said that the area could “reduce the pressure on Beijing’s flood control” and serve as a “moat” for the capital. While the move was hailed by the Chinese state media, social media users in the country reportedly fumed over the suggestion.

A week after the waters first swelled, some villagers told AFP they did not receive adequate warning from the authorities about when the floods would come. On Wednesday the Chinese government said it would allocate $139 million (one billion yuan) to compensate residents in areas that had been inundated to control flood levels, reported the official Xinhua news agency.

Hebei may spend two years carrying out post-flood reconstruction, reported state media China News Service on Friday (August 11), citing a news conference. The province will make sure affected residents can move back home or have new homes before this winter, the report added.

Impact of Doksuri in China

Since storm Doksuri made landfall in Fujian on July 28, it has led to record-breaking rains and floods in multiple cities causing extensive damage to homes, crops, livestock and infrastructure. At least 78 people have been killed across the country, as per an AFP report citing Chinese state media reports.

At least 33 people have been killed in Beijing, as of August 9, while 18 were still missing, reported Reuters. Additionally, more than 82,000 have been displaced, 59,000 houses have collapsed and 147,000 homes have been damaged due to the storm.

Meanwhile, in Hebei, 3.89 million people have suffered from flooding while 40,900 houses collapsed and 155,500 homes were severely damaged.

Another storm approaching China

The Chinese officials have also warned about more flooding due to another storm Khanun which is expected to make landfall over the weekend.

The death toll in northern China due to heavy rains and floods rose to at least 30 after storm Doksuri, a former super typhoon, slammed the capital Beijing and surrounding regions. This comes after 10 people were killed due to floods in a city near Beijing, officials said Saturday (August 5). Millions of people have been evacuated while officials, in parts of China, continue to struggle to deal with the aftermath of one of the strongest storms in years.

Death toll and damage

At least 10 people were killed in Baoding, reported local officials in the town which is about 150 kilometres away from the capital adding that 18 people were missing. Since Doksuri, a former super typhoon, hit mainland China last Friday, it has led to the most severe rains in the region since records began 140 years ago.

As of Saturday, torrential rains continue to batter northeast China and provinces bordering Russia and North Korea. Some cities were in the midst of an ongoing clean-up operation after the overwhelming rainfall which destroyed infrastructure and flooded entire districts.

On Friday, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management reported that natural disasters caused 147 deaths or disappearances due to heavy rains and floods. Additionally, 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in July were caused by flooding or geological disasters.

The remaining five deaths or disappearances were due to other natural disasters such as drought, it added. The report also noted the collapse and destruction of more than 2,300 houses has caused direct economic losses amounted to $2.2 billion (15.8 billion yuan).

‘Red alert’ remains in Beijing, millions evacuated

A “red alert” which was issued last week, remained in force in Beijing due to “geological risks” such as landslides linked to the bad weather. Meanwhile, around 1.54 million people had been evacuated, on Saturday morning, from at-risk areas in north China’s Hebei province, on Saturday morning, reported Xinhua.

According to state media reports, at least 15,000 residents were moved out of the city of Shulan, where one death and four people were reported missing. Images and videos from Shulan showed collapsed bridges and damaged roads across the city.

Officials, on Saturday, also warned about sinkholes and mudslides in the Fangshan and Mentougou outer districts of the capital. While an official also told the state media that floodwaters in Hebei could take up to a month to recede.

Around 100,000 people were evacuated from Zhuozhou to the southwest of Beijing which is a sixth of its population. In Baoding prefecture, which also includes Zhuozhou, officials have reported the collapse of more than 4,000 houses and damage to nearly 300 bridges with direct economic losses reaching nearly $2.4 billion (17 billion yuan) as of Saturday.

Climate change and extreme weather events in China

Notably, China also recorded its highest temperature of more than 52 degrees Celsius just last month with millions being affected by extreme weather events across the country.

“China has suffered unprecedented extreme heatwaves since last year...This year, there are record-breaking high temperatures in Northern China,” Ma Jun, director of the Beijing-based NGO the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs told AFP.

He added, “These heatwaves are linked to global warming, and this is what most climate scientists around the world tend to agree.”

Death toll rises to 30 as northern China continues to face storm Doksuri's wrath

China is currently battling with record rainfall with the capital city Beijing and northern parts of the country drowning in floods. Typhoon Doksuri, which tore through the Pacific last week, still continues to wreak havoc triggering thousands of evacuations.

The situation is so intense in the second most populous country in the world that the weather service officials released a statement on Tuesday saying that the Chinese capital Beijing had received the "heaviest rainfall in over 140 years", since the inception of record-keeping.

"The maximum value of rainfall recorded during this storm, which was 744.8 millimetres, occurred at the Wangjiayuan Reservoir in Changping," the Beijing Meteorological Service said.

The torrential rains, up until Tuesday (August 1), had claimed the lives of at least 20 people while 27 people were still missing.

As per reports, more than 52,000 people have been evacuated from Beijing and moved to safer areas since the extreme rains battered the city in late July.

In the Fangshan district, power to some 60,000 homes was knocked out.

Doksuri, which is the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year and the second-strongest to hit the southeastern province of Fujian since 2016, has prompted the authorities to use a flood storage reservoir in Beijing for the first time since it was first built, over 25 years ago, after the rivers in the country swelled up to record levels.

On Friday (August 4), China released a statement saying that natural disasters had claimed the lives of at least 147 people, with several missing in the month of July after record rainfall hit the country's capital.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in the month of July were caused by flooding or geological disasters.

Extreme rainfall

According to reports, since Saturday, the amount of rainfall that has been pouring has breached many local meteorological records.

A precipitation reading of 744.8mm (29.3 inches) was recorded by a reservoir in Beijing's Changping district between Saturday and Wednesday, which is the most to be logged in the city in over 140 years.

The previous record of 609mm was set in the year 1891.

In Hebei, 1,003mm of rain was recorded by a local weather station for a three-day period, i.e. from Saturday to Monday. Such an amount is usually witnessed over a year and a half.

What caused the extreme downpour?

As per Chinese meteorologists, besides the remnants of Doksuri, warm and humid air-flows and water vapour brought by Typhoon Khanun slowly moving in the Western Pacific also created the conditions for the heavy rains.

The meteorologists say that as the residual circulation of Doksuri's rain clouds headed north, a subtropical and continental high-pressure system in the atmosphere also barricaded their north and eastward passage, which further lead to the continuing conjunction of water vapour that acted like a dam storing the water.

Another factor that contributed to the extreme weather condition was the topographic features. As large amounts of vapour gathered in northern China, it was then lifted up by a low-altitude wind, shifting precipitation east of the Taihang mountain range, where the worst-hit areas, including Beijing's Fangshan and Mentougou districts, are located.

Meanwhile, a series of convective clouds gathered over the area, which lead to heavy rainfall for a lengthy period of time, further worsening the damage and problematising rescue operations.

The damage caused by rains

In the urban areas of the capital city of Beijing, several roads were flooded which forced the closure of parks and tourist spots.

The city's two major airports witnessed delays or cancellations of flights. Some subway lines and trains were also suspended.

The impact of rainfall was more evident in the city's western suburbs. In Mentougou and Fangshan districts, raging water rushed down roads, sweeping away cars. Villages in mountainous areas were completely cut off due to the extreme weather situation which further prompted the authorities to deploy helicopters to drop off food, water and emergency supplies.

Hebei's Zhuozhou, a city with more than 600,000 people to the southwest of Beijing, was half-immersed, with about 134,000 residents affected and one-sixth of the city's population evacuated.

Similar weather events in the past

The extreme weather conditions witnessed by Beijing currently are unusual for its surroundings. Previously, the Chinese capital has observed at least 12 incidences of significant rain brought by typhoons since authorities started keeping records, as per the state media.

Typhoon Haitang and Ampil both spilled over 100mm of rain on Beijing in the years 2017 and 2018 respectively. One of the most significant rain events was caused by Typhoon Wanda in the year 1956, which discharged more than 400mm of precipitation in the densely populated city.

One of the most significant rain events was caused by Typhoon Wanda in the year 1956, which discharged more than 400mm of precipitation in the densely populated city. Explained | The cause behind heavy rainfall in China that broke record of 140 years

At least two people were killed amid torrential rains and floods in the Chinese capital city, Beijing, on Monday (July 31) where roads were turned into rivers trapping hundreds of people overnight, as per media reports. This comes after thousands of people were evacuated over the weekend following the Chinese weather agency’s issuance of a ‘red alert’ for heavy rainfall.

What is happening in Beijing?

On Saturday, the Chinese weather agency issued a red alert – the highest warning – for torrential rain in Beijing, home to 22 million people. Since then, over 31,000 people have been evacuated, reported the country’s state media, on Monday.

Images and videos from Beijing show streets transformed into rivers overnight, affecting as many as 358 roads across the Chinese capital where cars were seen submerged while others were swept away in the floods.

In Beijing’s western suburbs, Mentougou district, rescuers found two bodies in a river during an emergency patrol and reported that hundreds were pulled to safety.

“This morning it was crazy, the water overflowed the Mentougou river and the whole avenue was flooded,” Guo Zhenyu, a 49-year-old resident, told AFP.

The average rainfall in Beijing reached 176.9 mm between Saturday night and Monday afternoon with the maximum recorded rainfall in Mentougou hitting 580.9 mm, according to the state media.

More than 4,000 construction sites were halted in Beijing, and almost 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage. Beijing residents had been asked not to go outside unless necessary, leaving the usually buzzing streets mostly deserted over the weekend.

Both airports in the Chinese capital cancelled more than 200 flights on Monday afternoon, with close to 600 delayed, said a report by Reuters citing data from flight tracking app Flight Master.

Situation in neighbouring provinces

The heavy rains due to storm Doksuri, which was downgraded from a typhoon, also led to the issuance of alerts in Beijing’s neighbouring city of Tianjin as well as Hebei province. According to reports, three of the five rivers that make up the Hai River basin rose to dangerous levels on Monday.

Additionally, some houses washed away in the Yongding River while at least 55,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Baoding City, as per media reports. A driver was also reported missing after two trucks fell off a collapsed bridge in Baoding city, on Sunday.

Chen Hong, a resident of the southern Fengtai district, shared footage with AFP that showed a parked van half-submerged in fast-flowing muddy water on Monday morning.

“Once it starts raining the road turns into a drain, and there's water on the first floor inside houses,” Chen told the news agency. He also spoke about how since the houses are old they have raised concerns about safety.

Upcoming storm in China

Chinese forecasters also warned about the approach of another storm named ‘Khanun’, which is expected to rapidly gain strength and strike China’s densely populated coast next week. While Doksuri got downgraded from a typhoon, the Chinese weather agency upgraded Khanun to typhoon from tropical storm status on Sunday.

Roads turn into rivers as torrential rains and floods slam Beijing

Extreme weather continued to batter Italy, on Tuesday (July 25), as Palermo airport was forced to shut down for hours due to wildfires, while over a dozen cities across the country were placed on red alert because of the high temperatures. Meanwhile, in northern Italy, two people were killed after an overnight storm.

Watch: Wildfires force closure of Palermo airport

The Palermo airport was closed for hours due to wildfires, however, the airport operator, shortly after 0900 GMT took to X (formerly Twitter) and announced that only a limited number of outbound flights would be allowed “for the moment”. It was later announced that a plane from northern Italy’s Turnin was able to land, reported Reuters.

The wildfires in Sicily continued to rage across the region on Tuesday amid high temperatures. The airport was closed after firefighters struggled to put out the major blaze in the nearby area which has since also disrupted local road and rail traffic.

The regional authorities also reported the death of a woman after an ambulance could not reach her house due to wildfire-related disruptions. The closure of the airport also further exacerbated Sicily’s travel while the region is in the midst of a peak tourist season.

Furthermore, the island’s main airport of Catania, also the country’s fifth-biggest, was closed after a fire in a terminal building but later reopened for a few flights. Wildfires also raged across various parts of Calabria, the southernmost part of the Italian mainland.

Palermo and Catania were also placed on red alert by Italian authorities due to soaring temperatures and witnessed power and water supply cuts. The temperature in parts of eastern Sicily rose to 47 degree Celsius, said Sicily’s civil protection agency.

This comes as the region recorded the highest temperature in Europe, two years ago, at 48.8 degree Celsius.

Storm in northern Italy

In an overnight storm in Italy’s financial capital, Milan, roofs were torn off, and trees were uprooted causing road blockages and disrupted overground transportation, reported Reuters. Milan residents reported torrential rain and hail on Tuesday morning which have also flooded parts of the city.

“I have been through 65 summers in my lifetime...and what I am seeing now is not normal, we can no longer deny it, climate change is changing our lives,” said Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala.

The two “tragic” deaths due to bad weather in northern Italy’s Lissone and near Brescia were confirmed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Tuesday.

Among those killed was a 16-year-old girl who was on a camping trip near Brescia when a tree fell on her tent overnight due to high winds and torrential rain, on Tuesday. On Monday, a middle-aged woman died after also being hit by a falling tree in Lissone.
