Hurricane Helene: US Coast Guard rescues man and his dog lost at sea as hurricane barrels toward land

An increasingly powerful hurricane threatening "catastrophic," dangerous storm surges and flooding was forecast to smash into Florida's Gulf coast on Thursday, as thousands of residents evacuated towns along the US state's shoreline.

Helene strengthened into a hurricane mid-morning Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico and is "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds, and flooding rains to a large portion of Florida and the Southeastern United States," the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its latest bulletin.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to 85 miles (137 kilometers) per hour with higher gusts, as the storm moves north at 12 mph.

"Strengthening is forecast, and Helene is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast Thursday evening," the NHC added.

The storm now has the potential to roar ashore as an intensely powerful Category 4 hurricane, on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale, potentially with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, the center said.

"A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet (six meters) above ground level, along with destructive waves," according to the NHC.

The storm also has potential to "penetrate well inland," it added. Several states are in the warning cone, and Atlanta, a Georgia metropolis hundreds of miles from the Gulf Coast and whose region is home to five million people, is forecast to experience close to tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain into Friday.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the storm Wednesday. "The entire Biden-Harris Administration stands ready to provide further assistance to Florida, and other states in the path of the storm, as needed," the White House said in a statement.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for nearly all of Florida's 67 counties, including Miami-Dade. He has mobilized the National Guard and positioned thousands of personnel to prepare for possible search and rescue operations and power restoration.

"The impacts are going to be far beyond the eye of the storm," DeSantis said as he urged Floridians to rush preparations to completion and evacuate if ordered.

Helene earlier lashed Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, home to multiple tourist hotspots, including Cancun. By Wednesday afternoon, the storm's outer bands were buffeting the southern Florida Keys.

Sixteen Florida counties have announced mandatory partial evacuation orders, while two have ordered the evacuation of all residents. DeSantis said at least 62 health care facilities, from hospitals to nursing homes, have already begun evacuations.

- Whole state bracing -

A "direct impact" was likely in the Tallahassee region, where coastal communities already looked like ghost towns by Wednesday afternoon.
In Crawfordville, potentially in the storm's direct path, wheelchair-bound residents of the Eden Springs Nursing and Rehab Center were being placed on coach buses for evacuation.

Other locals were seen loading up on gas and supplies, filling sandbags and boarding up homes and businesses. Communities across a wide swath of northwest Florida -- including Tampa Bay, an area of more than three million residents -- faced the dangerous threats of storm surge, heavy rain and fierce winds.

In St. Petersburg, adjacent to Tampa, cars lined up at supply donation or distribution centers while people filled sandbags. Teacher Lorraine Major, seen making her own preparations, has lived in Florida her whole life. "You get used to it," she said of the multiple storms and hurricanes that batter her state every year.

"But these last couple of years, the hurricanes are getting really, really bad," the 44-year-old told AFP in St. Petersburg.

In nearby Clearwater, resident Jasper MacFarland laid sand bags at his house entrance. "I expect the water to come up and I just don't want it to get in the house," he said.

A 250-mile stretch of coastline, essentially from Tampa Bay to just shy of Panama City, on the Florida panhandle is under hurricane warning. If forecasts are confirmed, Helene would become the most powerful hurricane to hit the US in more than a year.

Category 3 Hurricane Idalia hit northwestern Florida in August 2023. Researchers say climate change likely plays a role in the rapid intensification of storms, because there is more energy in a warmer ocean for them to feed on.

Hurricane Helene strengthens, threatens ‘catastrophic’ storms in Florida

Hurricane John made landfall in western Mexico on Monday after rapidly intensifying into a Category 3 storm, bringing heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding and landslides to the country’s Pacific coast.

Residents of Vietnam's capital waded through waist-deep water Wednesday as river levels hit a 20-year high and the toll from the area's strongest typhoon in decades rose to at least 179, with neighbouring nations also enduring deadly flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam at the weekend, carrying winds in excess of 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour and a deluge of rain that has also brought destructive floods to northern areas of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.

The Red River in Hanoi reached its highest level in 20 years on Wednesday, forcing residents to trudge through waist-deep brown water as they retrieved possessions from flooded homes.

Others fashioned makeshift boats from whatever materials they could find.

"This was the worst flooding I have witnessed," said Nguyen Tran Van, 41, who has lived near the Red River in Hanoi for 15 years.

"I didn't think the water would rise as quick as it did. I moved because if the water had risen just a bit higher, it would have been very difficult for us to leave," Van told AFP.

A landslide smashed into the remote mountain village of Lang Nu in Lao Cai province, levelling it to a flat expanse of mud and rocks strewn with debris and laced by streams.

State media said at least 34 people had been killed in the village, with another 46 still missing.

Villagers laid dead bodies on the ground, some in makeshift coffins, some wrapped in cloth, while police with picks and shovels dug through the dirt in search of more victims.

Vietnamese state media said the total death toll from Yagi -- the strongest storm to hit northern Vietnam in 30 years -- had risen to 179, with 145 missing across the country.

Worst floods since 2008

Mai Van Khiem, head of the national weather bureau, told state media that the water level in the Red River in Hanoi was at its highest since 2004.

Forecasters said the waters in Hanoi had peaked and the river level would go down, but Khiem warned of serious widespread flooding in the provinces surrounding the capital in the days ahead.

Police, soldiers and volunteers helped hundreds of residents along the banks of the swollen river in Hanoi to evacuate their homes in the early hours as the water rose rapidly.

A police official in Hanoi, who refused to be identified, said officers were going on foot or by boat to check every house along the river.

"All residents must leave," he said. "We are bringing them to public buildings turned into temporary shelters or they can stay with relatives. There has been so much rain and the water is rising quickly."

Images on Tuesday showed people stranded on rooftops and victims posted desperate pleas for help on social media, while 59,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Yen Bai province.

The United States is providing $1 million in immediate humanitarian aid to Vietnam, its embassy in Hanoi said.

Region-wide impact

In neighbouring Laos, authorities evacuated 300 people from 17 villages in northern Luang Namtha province, deputy district chief Sivilai Pankaew told AFP.

The UN's World Food Programme said it was "very concerned" for the safety of communities in northern Laos, while national radio reported extensive damage to houses, roads, markets, schools and farmland.

State media said at least one person had been killed and images showed rescuers working in murky brown floodwaters.

Thai authorities said four people were killed in the kingdom's northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and the army had been deployed to help around 9,000 families hit by floods.

In Myanmar, days of rain around the sprawling low-rise capital Naypyidaw sent river levels to danger levels, the junta said in a statement.

Lay Shwe Zin Oo, from the ministry of social welfare, told AFP that casualties were expected but search teams were still gathering information.

Posts on social media showed people clinging to trees as the waters ran below them.

Southeast Asia experiences annual monsoon rains but human-made climate change is causing more intense weather patterns that can make destructive floods more likely.

Typhoons in the region are forming closer to the coast, intensifying more rapidly, and staying over land longer due to climate change, according to a study published in July.

Typhoon Yagi: Hanoi river level hits 20-year high; death toll nears 200

The death toll in Vietnam from Asia's worst storm this year reaches 143 with torrents of rain triggering floods and landslides, burying homes, sweeping away a bridge and now threatening the capital Hanoi.

Typhoon Yagi death toll soars to 143 amid mass evacuations in Hanoi

Severe floods are set to hit northern Vietnam, including the capital Hanoi, following the devastating impact of Typhoon Yagi—the most powerful storm to strike Asia this year. Government officials warn of widespread inundation as the storm's deadly aftermath continues to unfold.

Typhoon Yagi: Floods inundate north Vietnam as death toll climbs

Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, left dozens dead in northern Vietnam and widespread damage to infrastructure and factories as it churned westwards, preliminary government estimates showed on Monday (Sep 9).

At least 49 people have died and 22 are missing, mostly because of landslides and floods triggered by the typhoon, the Vietnamese government said.

The typhoon made landfall on Saturday (Sep 7) on Vietnam's northeastern coast, home to large manufacturing operations of domestic and foreign companies. It was downgraded to a tropical depression on Sunday but the meteorological agency warned on Monday of further floods and landslides.

Yagi cut power to millions of households and companies, flooded highways, disrupted telecommunications networks, downed a medium-sized bridge and thousands of trees and brought economic activity in many industrial hubs to a halt.

Scientists have been observing Jupiter embroiled in a massive storm, which has continued for at least 350 years, and now their attention has been diverted towards its shrinking enormous red oval.

The oval, known as the Great Red Spot, is visible from Earth and is located in the southern hemisphere of the planet.

This meteorological feature is spread over an area of 10,000 miles wide and the intense anticyclone has been blowing at a speed which is more than 200 miles per hour in a counterclockwise direction. This is the largest windstorm ever recorded in our solar system.

What has now left the scientists more puzzled is the shrinking of the Great Red Spot.

Even though the latitudinal reach of the storm has remained consistent, it has contracted longitudinally dramatically.

In the late 19th century, the Great Red Spot extended to more than 40 degrees. However, in 2016, NASA’s Juno spacecraft observed that it had shrunk to 14 degrees.

The study's lead author and Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences PhD student Caleb Keaveney said, “Many people have looked at the Great Red Spot over the last 200 years and were as fascinated by it as I am."

“A lot of those people were not professional astronomers – they were just passionate and curious. That, plus the curiosity I see in people when I talk about my work, makes me feel like part of something bigger than myself," he added.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot remains shrouded in mystery

Even after years of rigorous study, the Great Red Spot has remained a topic of intrigue among scientists.

Astronomers have failed to determine when the spot was formed and how and also why it has a red colour.

The research was conducted by Keaveney with Gary Lackmann of North Carolina State University and Timothy Dowling of the University of Louisville.

The team's focus turned towards understanding how the Great Red Spot is getting impacted by smaller and transient storms.

To understand this, researchers utilised the atmospheric model known as the Explicit Planetary Isentropic-Coordinate (EPIC) model. This model was developed in the 1990s by Dowling for planetary applications.

In the analysis, it was found that the Great Red Spot is strengthened by other storms which leads to its expansion.

“We found through numerical simulations that by feeding the Great Red Spot a diet of smaller storms, as has been known to occur on Jupiter, we could modulate its size,” Keaveney said.

The monstrous storm Hurricane Beryl, which was classified as Category 5 and went from a tropical storm to the strongest Atlantic hurricane in June ever recorded, had gone through rapid intensification to reach this stage.

The storm had struck the Grenadine Islands with 150 mph winds and a destructive storm was created on July 1, 2024, which continued to intensify into the earliest Category 5 storm in the basin on record.

Extensive damage was caused by the hurricane, particularly on Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Speaking at a press briefing, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said, "In half an hour, Carriacou was flattened."

What was uncommon about Hurricane Beryl?

It was pretty much unusual for the storm to gain strength and rapid intensification at such an early stage in the season.

The intensification was especially alarming even though forecasters were predicting exceptionally active Atlantic hurricane season.

In cases of such rapidly intensifying storms, the coastal communities face danger. For example, in 2022, portions of Florida were devastated by Hurricane Ian after it went through rapid intensification.

The residents have been recovering from its effects to this day. When Hurricane Beryl moved through the Caribbean Sea, hurricane warnings were issued in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Why did the Hurricane Beryl rapidly intensify?

In a hurricane, rapid intensification happens when its intensity increases by nearly 35 mph over a 24-hour period.

Hurricane Beryl had exceeded the threshold and moved from tropical storm strength at 70 mph to major hurricane strength at 130 mph in just 24 hours.

Warm water is the main reason that triggers rapid intensification. The ocean temperature should be greater than 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius), which is more than 150 feet below the surface.

The energy required to turbocharge a hurricane is provided by the reservoir of warm water.

The reservoir of energy is measured as ocean heat content by the scientists. The ocean heat content which pushed Hurricane Beryl was extraordinarily high in comparison to the last years.

In a normal scenario, the ocean heat content does not reach such extraordinarily high levels in the tropical Atlantic till early September, which is when hurricane season generally peaks in activity.

Typhoon-like winds sucked out three people from their apartments in southeastern China while they were sleeping. At least seven people lost their lives in the violent rain and hailstorms that struck southeastern China. The extreme weather started on March 31 and affected nine cities, including Nanchang and Jiujiang. According to the Jiangxi provincial emergency flood control headquarters, the harsh weather has impacted over 93,000 people in 54 counties. Three people, including an 11-year-old boy, fell from a residential building during the storm and died on Sunday, reports said. The strong winds pulled the door-size windows off frames in two apartments in the building in Nanchang. The winds reportedly swept the residents from their beds through the gaps. The extreme weather, which started Sunday and continued into Tuesday, damaged dozens of homes, reported AP.
