SpaceX uphill track to the Stars continues with a minor setback on Saturday after the company's ambitious Starship lost its Co booster functionality minutes into takeoff. This marks the second unsuccessful test flight for the Starship with the previous one earlier in April this year.

Billionaire Elon Musk has denied a report that his rocket company SpaceX was discussing an initial public offering for its satellite internet business, Starlink, as soon as 2024. Musk called the Bloomberg report "false". The news report stated that SpaceX had been moving Starlink's assets to a wholly owned unit that would ultimately be spun off.

Elon Musk's SpaceX is on track to book revenues of about 9 billion dollars & register earnings of over 3 billion dollars this year, across its rocket launch and Starlink businesses. Moreover, the company's sales are projected to rise to around 15 billion in 2024.

Report: SpaceX to book revenues of about $9 billion in 2023 | World Business Watch

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur is in the news again, as he constantly is. This time, he is making news because his 'Starlink' is helping to provide and restore internet access in the Gaza Strip, which is currently being relentlessly bombed by Israel after Palestinian militant group Hamas' October 7 attack that sparked the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Like any other of his ventures, Starlink is an ambitious project that seeks to provide internet access in the remotest parts of the world. But the approach is different. So what exactly is Starlink? Read on.

The traditional approach of providing internet access to an area requires laying fiber-optic wires. This, in turn, involves infrastructure and setting up of a network that requires a physical presence on ground. Plus, all of this needs to be maintained regularly. Needless to say that such an approach becomes problematic because it may not always be possible to lay and maintain wires etc., in parts of the world that are very hard to reach, like mountainous regions, deserts, remote islands and so on. But people live in such places. So how to provide internet access to these populations?

Enter Starlink.

So what is Starlink exactly?

Elon Musk's Starlink seeks to provide internet access straight from the sky. A mountainous region may be hard to reach via ground but everyone, everywhere is living under the sky right?

So Starlink, which is operated by Elon Musk's aerospace company SpaceX, provides internet access with the help of satellites.

Now it's old news that satellites can be used to facilitate communication on Earth. But previously such access was extremely expensive and hence ordinary citizens could utilise the access either through governments or big corporations.

Starlink in itself is part of corporate set-up, yes but from what SpaceX and Musk have been saying, it aims to make power of satellites for everyday communication more accessible to users.

"Starlink is ideally suited for areas where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable," says Starlink on its website

"People across the globe are using Starlink to gain access to education, health services and even communications support during natural disasters."

So how many satellites are needed for this 'wifi from the sky'?

Literally thousands! Starlink started launching satellites in 2019. By August this year, they have already sent more than 5000 satellites. The company plans to ultimately send 42000 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Starlink has already begun providing internet service in many countries but not all. A low Earth orbit puts a satellite about 342 miles (550 kilometres) above the ground.

What's more, the low Earth orbit means that you don't need special equipment to see a Starlink satellite if it is passing through night sky above you. With naked eye, the satellite may appear like a star that is moving.

In case of Starlink satellites, however, due to their sheer numbers, they are often visible in the night sky as a 'train' of stars moving in a line. This is quite a sight for those who haven't seen such a thing before.

There are many apps that tell when exactly Starlink satellites are above you or going to be above you. You can then just look at the sky and see the 'train' of Starlink satellites. Stargazers around the world began reporting such trains within 60 days of launch of first satellites.

Controversies surrounding Starlink and its web of satellites

Since the outbreak of Russia-Ukraine war, Russian missile attacks have severely damaged infrastructure in Ukraine. This includes traditional internet network that is no longer reliable.

Ukrainian armed forces have hence heavily relied on net connectivity facilitated by Starlink to co-ordination military movements and thwart Russian advance which, at the beginning of the war appeared unstoppable.

However, Musk admitted himself in September this year that he refused request from Ukraine to make Starlink network available in Crimean peninsula so that Ukraine can launch a major drone attack against Russian warships anchored at Sevastopol. He said on X, the social media platform he owns, that agreeing to the request would have amounted to being 'complicit in a major act of war'.

"There was an emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol. The obvious intent being to sink most of the Russian fleet at anchor. If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation," he wrote in his post on X last year.

Starlink to provide internet to aid groups in Gaza, says Musk in response to US leader

Israel says it is in talks with Elon Musk's SpaceX for setting up Starlink internet services as the war rages on. Musk's Starlink satellites have been aiding Ukraine for a year now. The billionaire's biography has revealed that he halted the service before a Ukrainian attack. Should business mogul get to take national-security level decisions?

Starlink CEO Elon Musk reportedly tried to shut down Ukrainian access to its satellite communications network when Kyiv's forces were attempting to attack the Russian fleet off the Crimea coast last year, according to an excerpt from a biography written by Walter Isaacson titled Elon Musk.

Musk told the biographer that he was worried about being dragged into the war and ordered engineers to turn off the satellites as he feared that the attack would amount to “mini Pearl Harbor” and lead to a Russian nuclear retaliation.

According to the book, which is set to be released next week, after Musk disconnected the satellites, Ukrainian drones “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly”, reported CNN.

“How am I in this war?” Musk told the writer, who has previously published biographies of Steve Jobs and Henry Kissinger.

“Starlink was not meant to be involved in wars. It was so people can watch Netflix and chill and get online for school and do good peaceful things, not drone strikes.”

Fearing a nuclear war, Elon Musk snipped Starlink services to thwart Ukrainian drone offensive on Russia

Indian satellite internet services may soon be available through Elon Musk's Starlink. The Department of Telecommunication authorities are expected to meet on September 20 to decide whether to allow Starlink to operate within the nation with the required license, according to The New Indian Express, citing officials familiar with the situation. In 32 nations throughout the world, Starlink's satellite internet services are accessible. During the communication blackout that occurred in Ukraine while at war with Russia, its services also played a significant role.

China pushes through communications satellite to rival Elon Musk’s Starlink

There are faults in Elon Musk's Starlink satellites. They are leaking electromagnetic radiation. Launched into space to enhance broadband connectivity across the planet. Elon Musk's Starlink satellite constellation is leaking 'unintended electromagnetic radiation'. These radiations are likely to affect astronomical research.

Are Elon Musk's Starlink satellites leaking radiation?

Elon Musk owned Starlink has applied to the Indian National Space promotion and authorization Center to get clearance for setting up Earth stations.

SpaceX's Starlink internet satellites leaking radiation, scientists claim

Telstra, one of Australia's leading telecommunications companies, announced a groundbreaking partnership on Monday with Starlink, owned by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, to provide broadband and voice services via satellite to residents in rural and remote areas, Reuters reported. This collaboration is expected to offer an alternative to the limited internet options currently available to these communities. While specific pricing details have not been disclosed, Telstra has stated that it plans to deliver bundled home phone services along with Starlink broadband, making it a world-first offering. The company also intends to provide local tech support and optional installation services as part of this partnership. The service is expected to be available as early as December 2023.

Starlink: A Game-Changing Satellite Broadband Solution

Starlink, known for its innovative use of thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, is one of the few alternatives to Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN). Unlike the NBN's satellite service, Starlink's satellites operate in a low Earth orbit of approximately 550km, enabling significantly lower latency. In contrast, the NBN's Sky Muster satellites are positioned over 36,000km away, resulting in higher latency due to the longer data transfer distances. Starlink: A Game-Changing Satellite Broadband Solution Starlink, known for its innovative use of thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, is one of the few alternatives to Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN). This latency issue poses challenges for activities such as voice and video calls. Japan's military considers availing Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service

It's a battle of billionaires in the world of satellite broadband, as Elon Musk's Starlink and Mukesh Ambani's reliance JIO go head-to-head for control over India's internet landscape. Musk's Starlink and Ambani's reliance JIO are at odds over the government's distribution of satellite broadband spectrum, setting the stage for a clash of titans in the world's most populous nation.

Musk's Starlink challenges Ambani's JIO in an epic tech tussle

Elon Musk is eager to bring his Starlink satellite broadband to India, but the world's richest man faces strong resistance from Mukesh Ambani, Asia's wealthiest, who runs Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio.

Following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US on Tuesday, Musk said he was keen to launch Starlink in India which "can be incredibly helpful" in remote villages that have no internet or lack high-speed services.

What he didn't talk about is how Starlink is at odds with Ambani's Reliance over the government's distribution of satellite broadband spectrum, setting the stage for a battle between two of the world's richest men for satellite services in the world's most populous nation.

Starlink is lobbying India to not auction the spectrum but just assign licences in line with a global trend, saying it is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. An auction may impose geographical restrictions that will raise costs, it said in company letters made public by the Indian government this month.

Reliance disagrees and has called for an auction in a public submission to the government, saying foreign satellite service providers could offer voice and data services and compete with traditional telecom players, and so there must be an auction to achieve a level playing field.

In signs of deepening rivalry, an industry source with direct knowledge said Reliance will continue nudging the Indian government to auction satellite spectrum, and not agree to the demands of foreign companies.

The stakes are high for Musk. His push comes after a 2021 attempt to launch Starlink in India ran afoul of local regulators for taking bookings without a license, and just as he is in talks with India to set up a Tesla factory.

For Ambani, keeping foreign competition at bay in satellite broadband will be another shot in the arm - his Reliance Jio already has 439 million telecom users, making it the market leader, and 8 million wired broadband connections, a 25% market share.

Starlink's view on auctions is shared by Amazon's satellite internet initiative, Project Kuiper, and the British government-backed OneWeb.

Amazon declined comment. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, OneWeb and Starlink parent SpaceX, did not respond. Asked for comment, Reliance referred Reuters to its own and Starlink's government submissions.

AUCTION VS LICENSING

Of the 64 responses from companies, industry groups and others to India's public consultation on satellite spectrum, 48 favoured licensing, 12 voted for an auction, with the rest neutral, according to India's Koan Advisory.

A second industry source said Reliance believes opening the floodgates to established foreign players like Starlink without an auction will allow them "runaway success" just like Amazon, which will hurt Indian firms and create an uneven playing field.

Ambani's Reliance Retail has locked horns with Amazon, but lags the U.S. rival in market share in the e-commerce space.

Deloitte says India's satellite broadband service market will grow 36% a year to reach $1.9 billion by 2030.

Starlink says it is already authorised in 84 administrations around the world and has 1.5 million active users of its low-latency broadband services. Amazon plans to launch its first set of satellites in 2024.

Foreign satellite internet firms are concerned an auction by India will raise the likelihood of other nations following suit, increasing costs and investments, said one of the sources, an Indian adviser to a foreign company.

If India decides on holding an auction, OneWeb will find it difficult to do business in the country, said an industry source. Starlink is waiting for clarity on India's spectrum allocation before firming up its commercial strategy, another source said.

Tim Farrar, an analyst at US-based consultancy TMF Associates, said it would set a "bad precedent" for Starlink to pay a substantial auction amount in India when it is obtaining low-cost licenses in many other countries.

"I'd expect Starlink to make high-profile free offers elsewhere in order to try and demonstrate what India could be missing out on," he said.

SpaceX's Starlink secures Pentagon contract to provide satellite services to Ukraine

The Internet came to transform our lives. Gone are the days when the pen was the most important tool in this world. Times have changed and now the internet rules the world. With the gradual shift of content on the internet, the need for digital connectivity became crucial. Currently, 'Starlink' is the key player among satellite internet service providers. To compete with this mega player, India stepped in. In a historic feat, ISRO launched 36 Internet satellites into space on March 25.

Elon Musk's SpaceX is racing to make wi-fi available in airplanes with a rollout of Starlink Aviation. The constellation of thousands of Starlink satellites already in orbit around the Earth will be used to make internet available, for now, in private jets. To facilitate this, Starlink Aviation is offering customers a USD 150,000 airplane antenna. Charges for the antenna would be one-time. On top of that the customers will have to shell out USD 12,500 to 25,000 per month for the internet service in their private jet.

These customers, likely millionaires and billionaires, would be able to use internet with speeds of up to 350 Mbps. This is enough for video conferences and even gaming.

Booking for such a connection can be made now by paying USD 5000. Starlink Aviation will begin delivering terminals in mid-2023.

The European Union (EU) has announced plans to launch its own communications satellite network by 2027. The European Parliament and the EU member states reached an agreement Thursday under which the satellite communications internet system IRIS2 (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnection and Security by Satellites) will be built, DW reported.

This is a $6.2 billion project, which will be jointly funded by EU agencies and private companies. EU will contribute $2.4 billion, while the private sector is expected to fund the remaining $3.7 billion. The project was first announced in February before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; however, a disagreement over funding had stalled the negotiations.
