Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX has introduced an ambitious project, Starlink, aiming to build a broadband network with a cluster of orbiting spacecraft in low earth orbit. These satellites will connect the world with internet services even to the remotest region. Traditionally, wireless networks and optic fibres were used. Elon Musk wishes to blast off more than 40,000 satellites in space. The already-launched satellite has played a crucial role in Ukrainian forces battling Russia.

The project aims to provide low-cost and reliable internet services to the world. As per an estimate, around 4 billion global citizens do not have access to uninterrupted internet. This project will boost connectivity in the world and can fasten the forces of globalisation.

Despite all positives, what worries astronomers is that the project has the ability to overrun satellites in space. At the same time, overcrowding the space increases the risk of collisions. Such collision will rain debris down on the Earth.

Andy Lawrence, Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh put forth the debris would burn up as it passes through the atmosphere. This small chunk can bring the aeroplane down.

Prof. Andy Lawrence asks Elon Musk to slow down and do some research to figure out the space debris issue. A similar view was put forth by an Amateur group the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh president Mark Phillips told The Sun news ‘we could end up with a view of an "artificial sky" if things continued.’

Hence comes the need to clean space debris. The Space Liability Convention of 1972 underlines the responsibility of a country in case of harm. Launching State is liable to pay compensation for the damage or harm incurred. Taking in reference to the Orbital Debris Quarterly News from NASA, there are around 25,182 pieces ranging more than 10 cm in the Low Earth Orbit. Of the total, 114 belong to the Indian Space assets as per the report.

Despite this convention, there is a lack of concrete law on space junk. If space debris is not regulated then Kessler Syndrome can be imminent in future.

We will not do so unless at gunpoint. Sorry to be a free speech absolutist. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 5, 2022 × Earlier, Musk had warned that his company's satellite broadband service could be the next "target" of Russian aggression in Ukraine. "Important warning: Starlink is the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine, so probability of being targeted is high. Please use with caution," Musk tweeted. Last week Musk announced that Starlink was active in Ukraine and that SpaceX was sending more stations after a Ukrainian government official tweeted asking Musk to provide the embattled country with Starlink stations. It was reported Monday that Ukraine had received donated satellite internet, terminals from Starlink, but an internet security researcher warned these could be targeted by the Russians. Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov thanks Starlink for "keeping our cities connected and emergency services saving lives!". However, he added, that due to Russian attacks on infrastructure, the country needs generators to maintain Starlink's service. (With inputs from agencies)
