A replica of the Ashoka Pillar built in the sacred premises of Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya was unveiled on Monday. It is a Buddhist temple situated in the city of Waskaduwa, in Kalutara district, a southern province of Sri Lanka, about 42 km south of the capital Colombo.&nbsp;The sacred event was marked with the participation of Chief Incumbent of the Waskaduwa Sri Subhuthi Viharaya, Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayaka Thero, while Santosh Jha, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest. Aruna Prasad Chandrasekera, Chairman of Waskaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Deputy Secretary General of International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) Dr. Damenda Porage, Dr. Shermila Milroy, Dhamma Secretary of IBC, Krishani Peduruarachchige, Chairperson of ASB Group and many more dignitaries also graced the occasion with their presence.&nbsp;&nbsp;The construction of this replica of Ashoka Pillar in Sri Lanka was sponsored totally by H.E. Kyabje Ling Rinpoche, one the Tibetan Buddhism’s foremost spiritual leaders, denoting the lineage of Tibetan Buddhist masters, particularly the 6th and 7th incarnations. The High Commission of India was actively promoting the Pali language here, including republishing ancient grammar treatises such as Namamala and Balawatharo,” said Jha.&nbsp;The High Commissioner added that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit, he announced assistance for the Anuradhapura Sacred City Complex Project and pledged support for the exposition in Sri Lanka of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from Devnimori, Gujarat.&nbsp;“Previously, sacred relics from Sarnath and Kapilavastu have also been displayed in Sri Lanka, allowing devotees to pay homage. Most recently, it was due to timely objections raised by the Government of India that the auctioning of sacred gem relics of Lord Buddha in Hong Kong was postponed. The Government took swift and comprehensive action to halt the sale, emphasising its illegality and calling for the relics’ return to their rightful place in India, where they were discovered in Piprahwa in 1898. In a homecoming of sorts, Sri Lankan Army Chief Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo reviewed the pass out of Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun earlier today. The passing out parade saw commissioning of a new generation of officers including foreign cadets from Sri Lanka. Lieutenant General Rodrigo, who was on a 4 day India visit from 11th to 14th was commissioned from the prestigious Indian academy in December 1990 as part of the 87th Course. The two Sri Lankan officer cadets who were commissioned included RMNL Rathnayake, son of Brigadier RMSP Rathnayake. The total number of Sri Lankan Army officers commissioned from IMA now stands at 296 and shows India's continued role in shaping the leadership of friendly foreign forces. During his address to the cadets, he reflected on his own journey and he reminded the cadets that commissioning into the armed forces is not just about earning a rank, but embracing a lifelong way of service, responsibility, and leadership. Emphasising that respect is earned through daily conduct, he invoked the IMA Credo - duty to Nation, Soldiers, and Families of bravehearts - and highlighted the enduring values of discipline, integrity, loyalty, and honour. During his visit, Lieutenant General Rodrigo held detailed discussions with senior leadership of the Indian Army, including Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani and GOC-in-C, South Western Command, Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh focusing on enhancing professional military cooperation, joint training, and regional security frameworks. India, Sri Lanka have a long-standing defence cooperation. Both countries conduct bilateral exercise "Mitra Shakti", the flagship Army-level counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism training initiative between the two nations. At any given time, approximately 700 Sri Lankan Army personnel are undergoing training at various Indian Army establishments, making Sri Lanka Army the largest foreign participant in Indian military training programmes. These include prestigious institutions such as the Defence Services Staff College, Infantry School, Counterinsurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Army Air Defence College, School of Artillery, Armoured Corps Centre and School, Mechanised Infantry Centre and School; and the Indian Military Academy itself. India is a major provider of defence training to officers from Indian Ocean littoral states-Sri Lanka, Maldives, Mauritius, and Seychelles. IMA and other premier defence institutions regularly host foreign "gentleman cadets" from Asian and African countries, helping to shape their future military leadership. Historically, India has institutionalised its military engagements with Indian Ocean neighbours through structured dialogues, training and defence cooperation pacts.

The Indian Government has announced a decision to further extend its financial assistance to the ongoing passenger ferry service between Nagapattinan in the Southern Indian state of&nbsp; Tamil Nadu and Kankesanthurai in the island nation of&nbsp;Sri Lanka. According to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka, this assistance will be extended for another year and is in line with India's commitment towards enhancing regional connectivity and historic people-to-people ties between the two nations.&nbsp;The financial support is being extended under the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) mechanism, amounting to over LKR 300 million annually(approx $1mn). It is aimed at ensuring the affordability and operational sustainability of the service by covering key logistical and operational costs, on terms similar to the previous year.Since its resumption in&nbsp;August 2024, the four-hour-long ride via the Palk Straits has facilitated the movement of over 15,000 passengers, reinforcing cultural, economic, and social exchanges between India and the neighbouring island nation. This ferry service stands as a key milestone in revitalising maritime connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. Notably, the ferry ticket cost is also considerably more affordable than flight tickets between Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Jaffna, Sri Lanka.The continuation of the financial support for the ferry service also aligns with the shared vision for enhanced maritime connectivity, as reaffirmed during the visit of the Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's India visit in&nbsp;December 2024, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Sri Lanka visit in&nbsp;April 2025.Future plans include the exploration of additional routes and services that will further expand connectivity and economic collaboration, said the Indian High Commission in Colombo.&nbsp;
