A Russian technology company with links to President Vladimir Putin’s daughter claims it has developed “bio-drones” by implanting neural chips into pigeons’ brains. The firm, Neiry, says the birds can be remotely guided using electrodes, cameras, and small controllers, allowing them to fly long distances without recharging. While the company says the technology is meant for search-and-rescue and infrastructure monitoring, experts warn it could be adapted for military surveillance.

Aldrich Ames — one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history — has died at the age of 84 while serving a life sentence in a Maryland prison. Ames, a former CIA counterintelligence officer, sold U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and later Russia for nearly a decade, compromising dozens of agents and sensitive operations. His betrayals are blamed for the deaths of Western operatives and one of the worst intelligence breaches of the Cold War era.

A US Navy sailor was convicted of espionage after a jury found him guilty of selling sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence officer.

US Navy sailor convicted of espionage for sharing sensitive military information with China

A US Navy sailor, identified as Jinchao Wei has been convicted by a federal jury on six serious charges, including espionage, conspiracy to commit espionage, and unlawfully exporting military data. The conviction stems from an 18-month arrangement in which Wei provided sensitive Navy information to a Chinese intelligence agent in return for around $12,000. He was acquitted of a separate naturalisation fraud charge and is due for sentencing on December 1. US Attorney Adam Gordon described Wei’s conduct as a profound breach of duty that put national security—and the lives of fellow sailors—at risk. The FBI and NCIS also emphasised that this case reflects the increasing threat posed by foreign intelligence efforts, particularly from China, and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing such breaches. In a gripping narrative that unearths the harsh realities of Sri Lanka's civil war, Kagusthan Ariaratnam, a former child soldier of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) turned intelligence operative, has released his memoir titled "Spy Tiger: The 05 File." Co-authored with Michael Bramadat-Willcock, the book offers a rare glimpse into the life of someone who was on both sides of the conflict, serving the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before switching allegiances to work with Sri Lankan and Indian intelligence.

Ariaratnam's story begins in the classrooms of Kokkuvil Hindu College in Jaffna, where at 17, his life was abruptly redirected. "One day in 1991, while I was preparing for my advanced level mathematics exam, I was among 20 students taken to an LTTE camp," he recounts.

The memoir delves into the complex world of espionage, where Ariaratnam, under the codename "Spy Tiger," navigated through the moral and ethical quagmires of war. His transition from a child soldier to an intelligence agent is not just a tale of survival but also of the profound psychological and ethical challenges he faced.

A key aspect of the book is Ariaratnam's acknowledgment of the Indian spymaster B. Raman, whom he credits with saving his life. "Raman stepped out of the shadows to save my life from terror and horror in Sri Lanka," Ariaratnam writes, expressing gratitude for the protection and guidance he received from Raman, whom he describes as a "silent guardian."

"Spy Tiger: The 05 File" not only chronicles Ariaratnam's personal journey but also sheds light on the broader implications of the Sri Lankan civil war, the role of child soldiers, and the intricacies of espionage that often go unseen by the public eye.

In his book, he claimed that between 1992-95, India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) was involved in a covert operation within the LTTE to eliminate the LTTE supreme leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran following the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by a Tamil Tiger female suicide bomber.

He also detailed how he worked with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Ariaratnam's story begins in the classrooms of Kokkuvil Hindu College in Jaffna, where at 17, his life was abruptly redirected.

New Delhi, India In a gripping narrative that unearths the harsh realities of Sri Lanka's civil war, Kagusthan Ariaratnam, a former child soldier of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) turned intelligence operative, has released his memoir titled "Spy Tiger: The 05 File." Co-authored with Michael Bramadat-Willcock, the book offers a rare glimpse into the life of someone who was on both sides of the conflict, serving the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before switching allegiances to work with Sri Lankan and Indian intelligence. Serbian authorities have been using sophisticated digital surveillance technology to spy on journalists and activists in the Balkan country, Amnesty International said in a report published Monday.
According to the report -- "A Digital Prison" -- Serbian authorities have deployed spyware that "provides Serbian authorities with extensive surveillance capabilities once installed on a target's device".
The report includes testimonies of a journalist and activist who accused authorities of covertly installing spyware on their devices while in custody and during an interview with officials.
"Our investigation reveals how Serbian authorities have deployed surveillance technology and digital repression tactics as instruments of wider state control and repression," said Dinushika Dissanayake, Amnesty International's deputy regional director for Europe.
The report highlights the use of the Cellebrite and NoviSpy software and forensic tools to target phones and devices belonging to members of civil society.

NoviSpy can be used to remotely turn on a phone's microphone or camera for recording and extracting sensitive personal data, according to Amnesty.
Cellebrite products are widely used by law enforcement agencies across the globe to unlock smartphones and search for evidence.
Belgrade-based youth activist Nikola Ristic -- who was profiled by Amnesty in the report -- told AFP his phone was hacked by authorities after being arrested at a protest in November over a deadly railway station roof collapse.
While in custody, Ristic said intelligence officials seized his phone and he was repeatedly told to unlock the device.
"Their behaviour and the conversation with me seemed like a charade, a cover for something else," he told AFP, adding that he did not have any compromising evidence or material stored on the phone.
After being released, Ristic later handed over his phone to Amnesty.
After a forensic scan, it found that Cellebrite had been used to unlock the device and NoviSpy spyware had been installed.
"We don't actually have agencies focused on the safety of citizens, but rather spy agencies," Ristic told AFP.
Serbia's intelligence agency (BIA) dismissed the Amnesty report's claims as "absurd".
In a separate statement, Serbian police said its forces only use forensic tools in accordance with the country's laws.
According to Amnesty, Serbia received the phone unlocking software from Cellebrite as part of a broader package aimed at helping the country meet the requirements for European Union integration.
Independent journalists and civil society groups in Serbia have long accused the government and its allies of targeting them with defamatory statements, lawsuits, and public threats.
