He was arrested in March by Metropolitan Police Service officers, along with another man who was in his thirties, on suspicion of offences under the Official Secrets Act and both of them were bailed until October.

"We urge the UK to stop spreading disinformation and stop its anti-China political manipulation and malicious slander,” Mao stated. 
 
In London, the Chinese embassy lashed out at the media reports as a spokesperson branded the claim as a "political farce".

"I raised a range of different concerns that we have in areas of disagreement and, in particular, my very strong concerns about any interference in our parliamentary democracy, which is obviously unacceptable," Sunak said to British broadcasters, speaking about his meeting with Li. 
 
"The right thing to do is take the opportunity to engage to raise concerns specifically, rather than just shouting from the sidelines," he added.

These cryptic job listings had begun appearing on Russian-language Telegram channels in Poland at the start of this year.

The recruits were paid in cryptocurrencies and wire transfers from untraceable bank accounts, officials said. &nbsp;

Though the pay was meagre, it became a quick avenue to make cash for refugees from eastern Ukraine.

In the following weeks, the recruits were told to scout Polish seaports, place cameras along railways and hide tracking devices in military cargo, the Polish investigators told the newspaper.&nbsp;

But in March, new orders came that startled many: derail trains carrying weapons to Ukraine.

The Polish authorities said that "the foiled operation posed the most serious Russian threat on NATO soil since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine last year."

“Russia’s objective was to disrupt a weapons pipeline through Poland that accounts for more than 80 per cent of the military hardware delivered to Ukraine, a massive flow that has altered the course of the war and that Russia has seemed helpless to interdict, according to Polish and Western security officials,” the Washington Post reported.

Since the dismantling of the network earlier this year, Poland's security services have gathered evidence that has suggested that Russia has been planning other, deadly operations in Poland.

A representative of Poland's domestic security service (ABW), who remained anonymous, told the newspaper that the Russian spy agencies are still active in Poland.&nbsp;

He claimed that recruits had also been tasked with carrying out arson attacks and an assassination, but would not discuss the targets.

"This threat was eliminated, but the broader threat remains," he added.

In what appears to be a major plot point of George Orwell's critically acclaimed "1984" novel, the French government has passed a law that allows police to spy on people through their phones.&nbsp;

As part of a wider justice reform bill, the French lawmakers in the National Assembly passed a bill Wednesday that lets police surveil suspects by remotely activating cameras, microphones and GPS location systems on their phones and other devices.&nbsp;

A few caveats, however, have been added to stop the government from becoming a full-blown&nbsp;authoritarian state. To surveil any suspect, a judge will have to approve the use of special powers and the total duration of surveillance cannot exceed six months. Moreover, the said powers cannot be used against journalists, lawyers, MPs and other "sensitive professions".&nbsp;

Robert Hanssen, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent who spied for Russia was found dead in a top-security prison in the US on Monday (June 5), according to prison officials. Hanssen secretly fed Russia some of the deepest secrets in the 80s and 90s.

Hanssen offered himself to Soviet intelligence in 1985. He traded government secrets and also provided identities of US moles in the Soviet and later Russian governments. In exchange, he received diamonds and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

He worked in FBI's key New York counterintelligence department and was tasked with catching foreign spies. His work at the unit allowed him to cover his tracks as he investigated Russian agents in the US.

He was finally caught at a dead drop for exchanging messages with his Russian handlers in suburban Virginia just outside Washington on February 18, 2001.

A year later he was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

<h2>'Most damaging spy' found unresponsive&nbsp;</h2>

A statement from high-security US prison in Florence, Colorado said that Hanssen (79) was found unresponsive early on Monday. He was later pronounced dead, said the statement.

The FBI has, in past, regarded him as "the most damaging spy in bureau history."

Before joining the FBI, Hanssen served as a policeman in Chicago. He joined the bureau in 1976. Nine years later, he took a position in the counterintelligence unit. The unit tracked and tried to recruit Soviet officials at the United Nations.

Soon, Hanssen offered his services to the Soviets under the name "Ramon Garcia". Even his handlers did not know his true identity.

At the time that he was caught, he was considered the most damaging mole ever to pass US secrets to a foreign government, with thousands of classified US documents handed over to the Soviets, and later to the Russians.

Those included US nuclear war plans, software for tracking spying investigations, and the identities of US sources in Moscow, including Dmitri Polyakov or "Tophat," a Soviet general who fed his country's secrets to the United States between the 1960s and 1980s.

Polyakov was arrested in 1986 and executed several years later.

It is believed that Hanssen was motivated by money and intrigue rather than ideology. He reportedly reaped USD 1.4 million in cash and diamonds for his spying.

In May 2002 he pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage in exchange for a prosecution agreement not to seek the death penalty.

"I apologize for my behavior. I am shamed by it." Hanssen said at his sentencing.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Thursday (June 1) that it had detected an American spy operation that used a sophisticated surveillance software that allegedly hacked into thousands of iPhones, including those of diplomats. Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab claimed dozens of its employees' devices were compromised in the operation.

The FSB, which is the main successor to Soviet-era KGB, reportedly released a statement saying that several thousand Apple devices had been infected. FSB said that these included devices of domestic Russian subscribers as well as foreign diplomats based in Russia.

"The FSB has uncovered an intelligence action of the American special services using Apple mobile devices," the agency said in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.

The FSB said the plot showed "close cooperation" between iPhone maker Apple and the National Security Agency (NSA), which is responsible for cryptographic and communications intelligence and security.&nbsp;

Apple denied the allegations.

"We have never worked with any government to insert a backdoor into any Apple product and never will," the firm said in a statement.

Kaspersky CEO Eugene Kaspersky said on Twitter that dozens of his employees' phones were compromised in the operation, which his company described as "an extremely complex, professionally targeted cyberattack" that had targeted workers in "top and middle-management."

Kaspersky researcher Igor Kuznetsov told Reuters that his company had independently discovered anomalous traffic on its corporate Wi-Fi network around the start of the year. He said Kaspersky did not circulate its findings to Russia's Computer Emergency Response Team until earlier on Thursday.

FSB alleged that the US hackers compromised diplomats from Israel, Syria, China and NATO members in the espionage campaign.

"The hidden data collection was carried out through software vulnerabilities in U.S.-made mobile phones," Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Capvision was set up in 2008 by ex-Bain consultants and Morgan Stanley bankers. It offers consultation services to more than 2000 clients and has headquarters in Shanghai and New York, according to its website.

The company has been accused of failing to "seriously fulfill its counterintelligence responsibilities and obligations to prevent espionage", Chinese state broadcaster Jiangsu Television said on Monday.

An unnamed police officer told the broadcaster that Capvision routinely hired "highly-paid consulting experts" with close ties to Chinese authorities to "illegally obtain various types of sensitive data", which he said posed "major risks to China's national security".

Responding to the allegations, the firm wrote on its WeChat account that it would be "resolute" in fulfilling its national security responsibilities. It would also take on a "leading role" in regulating the consulting industry, it said, according to BBC.

The development comes a week after the Chinese police raided the Shanghai offices of US consultancy giant Bain &amp; Company. Officers seized their computers and phones, according to the Financial Times, which cited people briefed on the matter.

And in March, Chinese authorities detained five local staff at Mintz Group and shuttered its Beijing office.

The Chinese foreign ministry had accused New York-based due diligence firm Mintz Group, which specialises in background checks, fact gathering and internal investigations, “of illegal operations".

The latest clampdown on the consultancy firms stems from an anti-espionage law that was implemented last month that expanded the definition of "spying" and included cyberattacks against state bodies or critical information infrastructure.

The revised law, which will take effect from July 1, also gives Chinese authorities more teeth to forcibly search the belongings or request data of individuals suspected of spying.

Under this law, Chinese authorities can also ban citizens suspected of spying from leaving the country, or foreign nationals from entering.

China tightens screws on consulting firms under anti-spy crackdown, raids Capvision offices

A Japanese person arrested in China earlier this month has been charged with espionage activities, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

“I want to stress that companies and individuals need to respect and abide by the law. This is international customary practice,” Mao said.

“China will handle the case in accordance with law and will protect the rights of the person in accordance with the law.”

Responding to the arrest, Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that Tokyo’s embassy in Beijing was informed “this month that a Japanese man in his 50s was detained in Beijing for breaking China’s domestic laws”, reports Reuters news agency.

No details on the man’s identity or his alleged crime or when he was arrested has been provided by the government.

“Ever since we learnt about this case, the Japanese government has been strongly urging the immediate release of this Japanese national,” Matsuno was quoted as saying.

According to Japanese media, over a dozen Japanese nationals have been arrested in China since 2015.

Five of them have been found guilty by China of endangering national security, the paper said.

The US has shot down the giant Chinese spy balloon near the east coast that was said to have been spying on sensitive military sites across the country.&nbsp;The Department of Defense confirmed in a statement that the US fighter jets brought down the balloon over US territorial waters.

"Today's deliberate and lawful action demonstrates that President (Joe) Biden and his national security team will always put the safety and security of the American people first while responding effectively to the PRC's unacceptable violation of our sovereignty," Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

A US military official said that an F-22 fighter jet took the shot at 2:39 p.m. (local time), using a single AIM-9X supersonic, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile.

The debris landed in 47ft (14m) of water – shallower than they had expected – near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Two naval ships have been dispatched to retrieve the debris which is said to have spread over 11km (7 miles).

A clip shared on Twitter by a Reuters photographer showed a stream coming from a jet and hitting the balloon. According to the photographer, there was no explosion and it then began to fall.

US President Joe Biden had on Thursday vowed to shoot down the balloon ever since defence officials first announced that&nbsp;they were tracking it.

After the balloon was shot down, Biden said, "They successfully took it down, and I want to compliment our aviators who did it."

A few hours later, the Chinese foreign ministry reacted angrily to the incident as it warned of repercussions over America's use of force against its civilian unmanned airship. It said, “The Chinese side has repeatedly informed the US side after verification that the airship is for civilian use and entered the US due to force majeure – it was completely an accident."

“The US insisting on the use of force is an obvious overreaction and a serious violation of international practice. China will resolutely uphold the relevant company’s legitimate rights and interests, at the same time, reserving the right to take further actions in response,” said the Foreign Ministry statement in Beijing.

The Chinese authorities have denied that the balloon was for spying&nbsp;and said it was a weather ship blown astray.

The Chinese research vessel Yuan Wang 5 arrived at Sri Lanka's Hambantota port on Tuesday, ostensibly for resupply. It is scheduled to stay there from August 16 to 22. The presence of the ship has generated a great deal of controversy, especially when India warned Sri Lanka about possible Chinese espionage. Despite India's concerns being heard, the island country decided to allow the Yuan Wang 5 to dock, but on a date other than the August 11 arrival date that was originally planned.

The 'spy' ship

The Yuan Wang 5 is a third-generation ship in a line of ships that went into service in 2007 to serve China's human space programme. It is 222 metres long and 25.2 metres wide. The ship is a cutting-edge satellite and missile tracking vessel.&nbsp;

The Yuan Wang 5 can track the launch of satellites, rockets, and intercontinental ballistic missiles, conduct transoceanic aerospace observation using satellite images, and transfer data to tracking stations in Beijing and around China.

Guise of 'research ship'

The Yuan Wang 5 has a stellar track record after being in use for several months. The launch of China's Long March 5B rocket last month was the subject of the ship's most recent observation trip. It recently participated in maritime monitoring of China's Tiangong Space Station's first lab module launch.&nbsp;

The Yuan Wang 5 was under the command of the Chinese Navy, officially known as the People's Liberation Army Navy, according to the US Department of Defense. China claimed that the ship was a research vessel.

Why Hambantota?

After the Port of Colombo, Hambantota is the second-largest port in Sri Lanka. It started operating in 2010 before being privatised and leased to China for 99 years in 2017. Many believe this was a result of China's "debt trap" diplomacy.

The Malacca Straits and the Suez Canal, which connect Asia with Europe and are utilised by 36,000 ships yearly, including thousands of oil tankers, are located 10 nautical miles from the Hambantota Port. The Hambantota Port is one of Sri Lanka's most varied deep-water ports because of its close proximity to the route used for a major portion of the maritime oil trade.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Hambantota Port is strategically significant due to its proximity to the southernmost point of India, particularly in terms of long-range spying and espionage.
