Budget constraints force Australia to abandon billion-dollar space satellite programme

In an effort to cut down costs, Australia has scrapped what could have been a key part in the development of the country's space industry. The $700 million programme was set to launch four satellites between 2028 and 2033. However, budget repair is the current goal of the government. The federal budget of the year lays focus on relieving cost-of-living in the heat of rising inflation.

<p>A three-man crew from Italy soared more than 50 miles (80 km) above the New Mexico desert on Thursday aboard a Virgin Galactic rocket plane, the company's first flight of paying customers to the edge of space since British billionaire Richard Branson founded the venture in 2004.</p>

<p>The two Italian air force officers and an aerospace engineer from the National Research Council of Italy made the brief suborbital ride with three Virgin Galactic crew members, two of whom piloted the vehicle, VSS Unity, once it was launched at high altitude from the belly of its twin-fuselage carrier plane.</p>

<p>About 75 minutes after leaving the ground with its mothership, the Unity spaceplane safely glided back to its starting point on a runway at Spaceport America, a state-owned complex near the aptly named New Mexico town of Truth or Consequences. Virgin Galactic leases part of the facility.</p>

<p>The flight marked a long-delayed breakthrough for Virgin Galactic Holding Inc (SPCE.N), finally inaugurating commercial service after nearly 20 years fraught by development setbacks.</p>

<p>Rounding out the crew was their Virgin Galactic trainer, Colin Bennett, the company's lead "astronaut instructor," and Unity's two pilots, Michael Masucci and Nicola Pecile.</p>

<p>The gleaming white rocket plane was borne aloft at around 10:30 a.m. EDT (14300 GMT) attached to the underside of its transport jet, VMS Eve, as the carrier plane took off from Spaceport America near the New Mexico town of Truth or Consequences.</p>

<p>Reaching its launch-altitude point roughly 45,000 feet (8.5 miles/13.68 km) above the ground, Unity was then released from the mothership and fell away as the pilots ignited the vehicle's engine to send the rocket plane streaking in a near-vertical climb at about three times the speed of sound to the blackness of space.</p>

<p>Virgin Galactic said Unity topped out its flight at an altitude of nearly 52.9 miles (85.1 km).</p>

<p>At the apex of the flight, with the rocket shut down, the crew then experienced a few minutes of weightlessness before the craft shifted into re-entry mode and began its gliding descent back to Earth.</p>

<p>The flight came two years after Branson himself rode along with five other Virgin Galactic personnel for the first fully crewed test spaceflight of Unity in July 2021. At the time, the company was targeting regular commercial service to begin in 2022 following additional test flights.</p>

<p>But completion of the test program took longer than anticipated after federal regulators grounded Unity for 11 weeks while the company was under investigation for deviating from its assigned airspace on ascent during the July 2021 flight. A final crewed test flight to space was conducted with little fanfare five weeks ago.</p>

<p>The company had said before Thursday's launch that a successful flight would pave the way for Unity to fly again in early August, with monthly flights thereafter.</p>

<p>Virgin Galactic has said it has already booked a backlog of some 800 customers, charging most from $250,000 to $450,000 per seat, and envisions eventually building a large enough fleet to accommodate 400 flights annually.</p>

<p>Establishing a solid safety record is critical. An earlier prototype of the Virgin Galactic rocket plane crashed during a test flight over California's Mojave Desert in 2014, killing one pilot and seriously injuring another. The 1.4-billion-euro ($1.5-billion) mission is intended to run until 2029, but could last a little longer if all goes well. The launch comes as Europe finds itself with few ways to independently send its missions into space, due to Russia ending cooperation last year and long delays to the next-generation Ariane 6 rocket. How did Earth-like Venus turn inhospitable? NASA's James Webb Space Telescope could help decipher secret

<p>A fascinating celestial body known as WD0032-317B is pushing the boundaries of astronomers' knowledge regarding the differentiation between stars and planets. This enigmatic object, categorised as a brown dwarf, exhibits extraordinary characteristics that defy conventional expectations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Brown dwarfs are luminous, gaseous entities often referred to as "protostars." These objects possess atmospheric compositions similar to Jupiter but are significantly larger, ranging from 13 to 80 times its mass. While brown dwarfs are capable of fusing hydrogen isotopes in their cores, they lack the mass required to sustain the full-fledged stellar fusion akin to our sun. Simply put, they resemble smouldering charcoal rather than a blazing wood-fired oven.</p>

<h2><strong>How Brown Dwarf is different?</strong></h2>

<p>Ordinarily, brown dwarfs maintain surface temperatures of approximately 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius), considerably cooler than most stars. However, WD0032-317B, located 1,400 light-years from Earth, defies these expectations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a recent study published in Nature Astronomy, researchers determined that this particular brown dwarf boasts an astounding surface temperature of 13,900 degrees Fahrenheit (7,700 degrees Celsius). Notably, this temperature surpasses that of our sun by several thousand degrees and is hot enough to cause the disintegration of molecular structures into their constituent atoms.</p>

<h2><strong>Why the Brown Dwarf is extremely hot?</strong></h2>

<p>The research conducted on WD0032-317B reveals a vital factor contributing to its unparalleled temperature. This brown dwarf orbits an ultra-hot white dwarf star in extremely close proximity, resulting in a remarkably short year of just 2.3 hours. Consequently, WD0032-317B has become tidally locked, with one side perpetually facing its star while the other side remains in constant shadow.</p>

<p lang="en-US">"While the star in d203-506 is a small red dwarf, the system is bombarded by strong ultraviolet (UV) light from nearby hot, young, massive stars. Scientists believe that most planet-forming disks go through a period of such intense UV radiation since stars tend to form in groups that often include massive, UV-producing stars," NASA stated.<br />
<br />
NASA said that generally complex organic molecules are destroyed by UV radiation and hence, the discovery of CH3+ is a big achievement.<br />
<br />
"However, the team predicts that UV radiation might actually provide the necessary source of energy for CH3+ to form in the first place. Once formed, it then promotes additional chemical reactions to build more complex carbon molecules. Broadly, the team notes that the molecules they see in d203-506 are quite different from typical protoplanetary disks. In particular, they could not detect any signs of water," stated NASA.</p>

Known as methyl cation (pronounced cat-eye-on), it’s thought to aid in building more complex carbon molecules—the foundation for all known life: https://t.co/QVLCDQjCi8 pic.twitter.com/q9Hy0ZgXbt — NASA (@NASA) June 26, 2023 × The space agency added that carbon compounds exist in the foundations of all known life, and their discovery is particularly interesting for scientists who are working to understand how life developed on Earth, and how it can exist in some other part of the universe. "The study of interstellar organic (carbon-containing) chemistry, which Webb is opening in new ways, is an area of keen fascination to many astronomers," stated NASA. James Webb Telescope's key role in carbon discovery Explaining the role of the James Webb Telescope in the discovery of carbon molecules, NASA stated, "The unique capabilities of Webb made it an ideal observatory to search for this crucial molecule. Webb’s exquisite spatial and spectral resolution, as well as its sensitivity, all contributed to the team’s success. In particular, Webb’s detection of a series of key emission lines from CH3+ cemented the discovery." Marie-Aline Martin-Drumel, who is a professor at the University of Paris-Saclay in France and a member of the science team, stated that this discovery not only validates Webb's incredible sensitivity but also emphasises the postulated central importance of CH3+ in interstellar chemistry. WATCH | NASA scientist admits that the Moon 'might already have life on it' "While the star in d203-506 is a small red dwarf, the system is bombarded by strong ultraviolet (UV) light from nearby hot, young, massive stars. Scientists believe that most planet-forming disks go through a period of such intense UV radiation since stars tend to form in groups that often include massive, UV-producing stars," NASA stated. NASA said that generally complex organic molecules are destroyed by UV radiation and hence, the discovery of CH3+ is a big achievement. In particular, they could not detect any signs of water," stated NASA. A hint of life in universe? NASA makes breakthrough discovery of carbon molecule in space

<p>In a remarkable revelation, scientists have observed that our closest supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, has emerged from a prolonged state of dormancy and intensified its luminosity by a factor of a million.</p>

<p>Situated at the core of the Milky Way, this black hole is approximately four million times more massive than the Sun. Previously considered quiescent, it suddenly displayed heightened activity around 200 years ago, devouring cosmic objects that ventured too close, reported the Independent.</p>

<p>The resulting surge in brightness occurred rapidly, analogous to a hidden glow-worm in a forest instantly radiating sunlight, according to researchers. While the precise cause of this awakening remains unknown, scientists are dedicated to studying the black hole's behaviour in order to unravel the factors that trigger such transitions from quiescence to activity.</p>

China achieves historic milestone: Launches 41 satellites in single mission, setting new record

<p>So what does our default understanding of the Universe say? If a space object is revolving around a star, it will be a planet and relatively a cool body, right? This logic is in keeping with things in our Solar System as planets revolving around the Sun are cooler while the Sun blazes with temperatures upwards of 5000 degree&nbsp;Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But a recently discovered space object may change your understanding of things. The object is revolving around its star like any other planet would do. But the temperature of this object exceeds that of our Sun!</p>

<p>Meet the brown dwarf located 1400 light-years away from us. The brown dwarf is an interesting category of space objects. Brown dwarfs straddle the conceptual gap between planets and stars.</p>

<p>This particular brown dwarf is revolving around its star in such a close orbit that its surface temperature exceeds 7000 degree&nbsp;Celsius. For comparison, the temperature on the surface of the Sun is around 5500 degree&nbsp;Celsius.</p>

<p>The brown dwarf is in fact a record breaker. It is the hottest object in its category. Brown dwarfs are hotter than planets. But they are cooler than the coolest of red dwarf stars.</p>

<p>The particular brown dwarf in question was discovered by an international team led by astrophysicist Na'ama Hallakoun from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The team has named the object WD0032-317B. The details about the discovery have been mentioned in a paper accepted in Nature Astronomy, as per ScienceAlert.</p>

So what does our default understanding of the Universe say? If a space object is revolving around a star, it will be a planet and relatively a cool body, right? This logic is in keeping with things in our Solar System as planets revolving around the Sun are cooler while the Sun blazes with temperatures upwards of 5000 degree Celsius.

This logic is in keeping with things in our Solar System as planets revolving around the Sun are cooler while the Sun blazes with temperatures upwards of 5000 degree Celsius. But a recently discovered space object may change your understanding of things. The object is revolving around its star like any other planet would do. But the temperature of this object exceeds that of our Sun! Meet the brown dwarf located 1400 light-years away from us. The brown dwarf is an interesting category of space objects. Brown dwarfs straddle the conceptual gap between planets and stars. This particular brown dwarf is revolving around its star in such a close orbit that its surface temperature exceeds 7000 degree Celsius. For comparison, the temperature on the surface of the Sun is around 5500 degree Celsius. The brown dwarf is in fact a record breaker. It is the hottest object in its category. Brown dwarfs are hotter than planets. But they are cooler than the coolest of red dwarf stars. The AI boom is happening all over the world. The majority of buzzwords these days are related to AI. And it's only a matter of time before AI would be linked to phenomena such as aliens & UFOs. Likely to feel a kinship with AI, aliens may soon make contact with them.

Are Aliens likely to make first contact with AI & not humans?

Mysteries of universe to be revealed by Euclid telescope, say scientists

In the last three years, India has seen a rapid increase in private space firms and startups. They've launched rockets, they've placed their satellites in orbit, and much more. To further enhance India's space industry the government is now working on permitting foreign direct investment. For more on this, our correspondent Siddharth MP caught up with Dr Pawan Goenka who heads the In-SPACe, the Regulatory Body of the Indian space sector.

<p>Humans, on their future long-range trips to space like one on Mars, would be required to cultivate some of the crops, which makes it essential to understand how plants grow in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the wake of this growing need, NASA has been planting flower crops in space since 2015 when the Veggie system and its rooting "pillows", which contained zinnia seeds, were activated by NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren.</p>

<h2><strong>NASA shares photo of bloom&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Now, NASA posted a photo of the flower that bloomed in the zinnia plant which was sowed and grown in the International Space Station.</p>

Humans, on their future long-range trips to space like one on Mars, would be required to cultivate some of the crops, which makes it essential to understand how plants grow in space. In the wake of this growing need, NASA has been planting flower crops in space since 2015 when the Veggie system and its rooting "pillows", which contained zinnia seeds, were activated by NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren. NASA shares photo of bloom Now, NASA posted a photo of the flower that bloomed in the zinnia plant which was sowed and grown in the International Space Station. <p>India's third Lunar Mission Chandrayaan-3 will have an orbiter (designated as Propulsion Module), but this orbiter won't carry scientific payloads, as was done during Chandrayaan-2. This means that the orbiter weighs lesser than that of its predecessor. However,&nbsp;the payload mass reduced from the orbiter has been added to the Chandrayaan-3 Lunar lander. The Indian Lunar spacecraft comprises three parts - Orbiter, Lander, and Rover.</p>

<p>"The added mass on the Lunar lander comprises more fuel, more ruggedisation, measures for failure tolerance and strengthening of landing legs and increased scientific payloads, larger solar panels for better power generation," Dr&nbsp;S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO told WION. He was responding to WION's question on whether the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft would weigh lesser than its predecessor (which weighed around 3.6 tonnes or 3,600kgs).</p>

<p>Addressing media on the sidelines of ISRO's maiden International Conference on Spacecraft Mission Operations, the Chief of the Indian Space Agency said that Chandrayaan-3 is to be launched in the 1-week window that begins on July 12th,&nbsp;if all were to go as per plan.</p>

<p>Deep space missions are launched within a specific window (period of time), keeping in mind various factors including the dynamic position of the destination (with respect to Earth), the time taken to travel to the destination, the steps involved, the rocket being used, the purpose of the mission, the movement and impact of other heavenly bodies, etc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Elaborating on the status of Chandrayaan-3, he added that the spacecraft was undergoing testing of its propulsion module (orbiter), lander, and rover, while the LVM3 rocket is also being integrated. "India's largest rocket LVM3 will be integrated and ready for Chandrayaan-3 by June-end, whereas by early July the spacecraft would be ready," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Queried about how confident the positive mission outcome of Chandrayaan-3 is, Dr&nbsp;Somanath told WION that he is always confident, but space is an unforgiving domain, where only rigorous testing and clear decision-making yield favourable results. Smilingly, making a mention of luck being involved, he said that "even luck comes out of hard work and the perseverance to do the right thing at the right time".</p>

<p>India's latest Lunar mission will take the same path and trajectory as its predecessor, as it is a tried and tested route to the moon, which is at a distance of 3,84,000 kms from Earth. The journey is expected to take around a month and a half, as a circuitous route would be followed. In September 2019, India's second Lunar Mission Chandrayaan-2 crash-landed on the lunar surface, minutes before it was expected to make a controlled vertical landing at the Lunar South Pole. With a successful Lunar landing, India hopes to join the list of nations that includes the US, Russia, and China.&nbsp;</p>

Chandrayaan-3 intended to be launched between July 12 and 19: ISRO chairman to WION

<p>The first fry in space has been made by researchers of&nbsp;the European Space Agency (ESA). A study was recently carried out in microgravity at a height of 2,000 feet to see whether potatoes can&nbsp;be cooked to an edible level. Despite the fact that buoyancy—the phenomenon that causes oil bubbles to exit a potato's surface—is known to not occur in space due to the absence of gravity, ESA teams were nonetheless able to cook fries in a laboratory setting.</p>

<p>The scientists clarified that without buoyancy, the bubbles wouldn't be drawn upward and adhere to the surface of the potato. As a result, the potato would be undercooked and "undesirable," and a film of steam would form around it.</p>

<h2><strong>How was this achieved?</strong></h2>

<p>The fried space food is being made as part of a study to examine how culinary methods like frying are affected by microgravity. ESA carried out two flying campaigns using a plane that flew in arcs to provide fleeting experiences of weightlessness for this study. The process through which the aircraft ascends from a height of at least 20,000 feet is known as "parabolic flight".&nbsp; It ascends to a specific altitude and then plummets back to the starting point, providing 22 seconds of weightlessness.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the time that potatoes were being cooked in microgravity, a high-speed, high-resolution camera captured the dynamics of the bubbles, including their growth rate, size, distribution, and escape velocity from the potato's surface. The internal potato temperatures and the oil's boiling point were also measured.&nbsp;</p>

The first fry in space has been made by researchers of the European Space Agency (ESA). A study was recently carried out in microgravity at a height of 2,000 feet to see whether potatoes can be cooked to an edible level. Despite the fact that buoyancy—the phenomenon that causes oil bubbles to exit a potato's surface—is known to not occur in space due to the absence of gravity, ESA teams were nonetheless able to cook fries in a laboratory setting. The scientists clarified that without buoyancy, the bubbles wouldn't be drawn upward and adhere to the surface of the potato. As a result, the potato would be undercooked and "undesirable," and a film of steam would form around it. How was this achieved? The fried space food is being made as part of a study to examine how culinary methods like frying are affected by microgravity. ESA carried out two flying campaigns using a plane that flew in arcs to provide fleeting experiences of weightlessness for this study. The process through which the aircraft ascends from a height of at least 20,000 feet is known as "parabolic flight". It ascends to a specific altitude and then plummets back to the starting point, providing 22 seconds of weightlessness. The internal potato temperatures and the oil's boiling point were also measured. 🍳 What a better way to start your Sunday than with a fry-up? But have you ever tried frying in zero-g? As we prepare for missions to the #Moon and on to Mars, you will be happy to hear that one staple comfort food, fries, is not out of reach 🍟 🔗 https://t.co/h55cTMO36w pic.twitter.com/ukK4NWXTzT — ESA (@esa) June 4, 2023 × "It is seen that even in the absence of buoyancy i.e., during parabolas, vapour bubbles still detach and depart from the surface of potato permitting hot oil to maintain contact with the potato surface and leading eventually to a fried product." Is there life beyond Earth? It is one of the most profound questions of all time. The hunt for an answer is going on for decades. A study now suggests the possibility of life existing on planets orbiting the stars of the Milky Way galaxy. One-third of the planets orbiting the most common stars across the galaxy may harbour life.

One-third of Milky Way Planets may hold conditions to support life: Study

<p>China is close to becoming the first country in the world to grow early-stage blood stem cells in space. Chinese scientists have already conducted a successful first-of-its-kind experiment in space, and stem cells cultured for half the month in the Wentian lab module of China’s Tiangong space station were brought to Earth on Sunday. Now, Chinese scientists will analyse and conduct more tests on stem cells to assess the viability of the scientific process. The experiment was conducted after the Tianzhou 6 docked with the space station.</p>

<h2><strong>How did the scientists conduct the experiment?</strong></h2>

<p>The research team, led by Lei Xiaohua, a researcher with the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducted the experiment using human pluripotent stem cells. These cells have the ability to develop into various types of human cells.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They were placed in the cell culture module of Tianzhou 6 and later transferred to the biotechnology experiment cabinet in the Wentian lab module. The team's objective was to observe the process of these pluripotent stem cells differentiating into blood stem cells. A photograph shared by Lei with state broadcaster CCTV depicted the pluripotent stem cells beginning to undergo this differentiation process while in space.</p>

<h2><strong>Why blood stem cell experiment in space is significant?</strong></h2>

<p>Scientists are curious to know how human cells age in a zero-gravity environment. This can really aid research around stem cell differentiation and regenerative medicine in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a similar vein, American scientists utilised the Axiom Mission 2 by Axiom Space in May to send stem cells to space. Their experiment's objective is to investigate the feasibility of cultivating induced pluripotent stem cells in a microgravity environment.</p>

<p>Lei explained that the study attracted interest due to the unique properties of pluripotent stem cells. These cells possess unlimited growth potential and can differentiate into any type of cell found in the human body, making them an invaluable resource for regenerative medicine.</p>
