<p>Evolving business model&nbsp;</p>

<p>The flight came two years after Branson himself rode along with five other Virgin Galactic personnel for the first fully crewed test spaceflight of Unity in July 2021. At the time, the company was targeting regular commercial service to begin in 2022 following additional test flights.</p>

<p>But completion of the test program took longer than anticipated after federal regulators grounded Unity for 11 weeks while the company was under investigation for deviating from its assigned airspace on ascent during the July 2021 flight. A final crewed test flight to space was conducted with little fanfare five weeks ago.</p>

<p>The company had said before Thursday's launch that a successful flight would pave the way for Unity to fly again in early August, with monthly flights thereafter.</p>

<p>Virgin Galactic has said it has already booked a backlog of some 800 customers, charging most from $250,000 to $450,000 per seat, and envisions eventually building a large enough fleet to accommodate 400 flights annually.</p>

<p>Establishing a solid safety record is critical. An earlier prototype of the Virgin Galactic rocket plane crashed during a test flight over California's Mojave Desert in 2014, killing one pilot and seriously injuring another. Passengers are required to sign a pre-flight waiver acknowledging the risks and lack of government regulation over space tourism.</p>

<p>How high one goes to experience what is considered true spaceflight may also factor into the equation.</p>

<p>Bezos, whose astro-tourist venture Blue Origin has already flown several commercial passenger flights, has disparaged Virgin as falling short of the mark.</p>

Virgin Galactic completes first commercial rocket plane flight to space

Astronomers across the world announce that they have found the first evidence of a long-theorised form of gravitational waves that create a background hum rumbling throughout the universe. The breakthrough was made by hundreds of scientists using radio telescopes in North America, Europe, China, India and Australia after years of work.

<p>Europe's Euclid space telescope is scheduled to blast off Saturday on the first-ever mission aiming to shed light on two of the universe's greatest mysteries: dark energy and dark matter.</p>

<p>The launch is planned from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 11:11 am local time (1511 GMT) on a Falcon 9 rocket of the US company SpaceX.</p>

<p>The European Space Agency was forced to turn to the rival firm of billionaire Elon Musk to launch the mission after Russia pulled its Soyuz rockets in response to sanctions over the war in Ukraine.</p>

<p>After a month-long journey through space, Euclid will join its fellow space telescope James Webb at a stable hovering spot around 1.5 million kilometres (more than 930,000 miles) from Earth called the second Lagrangian Point.</p>

<p>From there, Euclid will chart the largest-ever map of the universe, encompassing up to two billion galaxies across more than a third of the sky.</p>

<p>By capturing light that has taken 10 billion years to reach Earth, the map will also offer a new view of the 13.8-billion-year-old universe's history.</p>

<p>Scientists hope to use this information to address what the Euclid project manager Giuseppe Racca calls a "cosmic embarrassment": that 95 percent of the universe remains unknown to humanity.</p>

<p>Around 70 percent is thought to be dark energy, the name given to the unknown force that is causing the universe to expand at an accelerated rate.</p>

<p>And 25 percent is dark matter, thought to bind the universe together and make up around 80 percent of its mass.</p>

<p>'Dark detective'</p>

<p>Euclid consortium member Guadalupe Canas told a press conference that the two-tonne space telescope was a "dark detective" which can reveal more about both elements.</p>

<p>Euclid, which is 4.7 metres (15 feet) tall and 3.5 metres (11 feet) wide, will use two scientific instruments to map the sky.</p>

<p>Its visible light camera will let it measure the shape of galaxies, while its near infrared spectrometer and photometer will allow it to measure how far away they are.</p>

<p>So how will Euclid try to spot things that cannot be seen? By searching for their absence.</p>

<p>The light coming from billions of light years away is slightly distorted by the mass of visible and dark matter along the way, a phenomenon known as weak gravitational lensing.</p>

<p>"By subtracting the visible matter, we can calculate the presence of the dark matter which is in between," Racca told AFP.</p>

<p>While this may not reveal the true nature of dark matter, scientists hope it will throw up new clues that will help track it down in the future.</p>

<p>For dark energy, French astrophysicist David Elbaz compared the expansion of the universe to blowing up a balloon with lines drawn on it.</p>

<p>By "seeing how fast it inflates," scientists hope to measure the breath -- or dark energy -- making it expand.</p>

<p>'Goldmine'</p>

<p>A major difference between Euclid and other space telescopes is its wide field of view, which takes in an area equivalent to two full moons.</p>

<p>Project scientist Rene Laureijs said that this wider view means Euclid will be able to "surf the sky and find exotic objects" like black holes that the Webb telescope can then investigate in greater detail.</p>

<p>Beyond dark energy and matter, Euclid's map of the universe is expected to be a "goldmine for the whole field of astronomy," said Yannick Mellier, head of the Euclid consortium.</p>

<p>Scientists hope that Euclid's data will help them learn more about the evolution of galaxies, black holes and more.</p>

<p>The first images are expected once scientific operations start in October, with major data releases planned for 2025, 2027 and 2030.</p>

<p>The 1.4-billion-euro ($1.5-billion) mission is intended to run until 2029, but could last a little longer if all goes well.</p>

<p>The launch comes as Europe finds itself with few ways to independently send its missions into space, due to Russia ending cooperation last year and long delays to the next-generation Ariane 6 rocket.</p>

<p>This as per researchers, means that even close to a star, a planet's temperatures can be mild.</p>

<h2><strong>LP 890-9c, Venus and habitable planets</strong></h2>

<p>Using the exoplanet as a model, a research team led by Lisa Kaltenegger from the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University has modelled the possible climatic and atmospheric states of LP 890-9c and explored how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could distinguish between them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>LP 890-9c's location in its planetary system is similar to Venus' position in our solar system, with both planets positioned at the inner edge of the habitable zone.</p>

<p>While Venus became an inhospitable world due to a runaway greenhouse effect, not all planets in similar positions will necessarily follow the same path.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Looking at this planet will tell us what's happening on the inner edge of the habitable zone — how long a rocky planet can maintain habitability when it starts to get hot," said Kaltenegger in a statement.</p>

<p>The team developed models of LP 890-9c based on measured parameters such as mass and radius. The models also considered factors such as chemical composition, surface temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud cover, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Five different models were created, ranging from an Earth-like planet but hotter, to varying degrees of atmospheric water vapour and greenhouse effects, culminating in a model resembling Venus.</p>

<p>"This planet is the first target where we can test these different scenarios," said Kaltenegger.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If it's still a hotter Earth — hot, but with liquid water and conditions for life — then the inner edge of the habitable zone (around all stars) could be teeming with life," speculated the researcher.</p>

<p>The brown dwarf is in fact a record breaker. It is the hottest object in its category. Brown dwarfs are hotter than planets. But they are cooler than the coolest of red dwarf stars.</p>

Euclid, which will be launched on July 1, will need a moth to cross the solar system to reach its destination which is 150 million km from Earth, at a position called the second Lagrange point. From this point, the craft will be able to look into the deep space with the Earth, moon and sun behind it. Then, the two-tonne spacecraft will start its survey of the heavens.<br />

“Euclid has the resolving power of the Hubble space telescope but will be able to survey a third of the night sky at the same time, so it will give us an incredibly detailed map of the heavens,” said astronomer Stephen Wilkins, of Sussex University, speaking to&nbsp;The Guardian.</p>

Mysteries of universe to be revealed by Euclid telescope, say scientists

<p>A portion of&nbsp;<em>Star Wars</em>, an American epic space opera, appears to have become a reality after the discovery of the new planet TOI-1338 c (also known as BEBOP-1 c) — the second-ever known planetary system orbiting twin stars. Only two worlds are known in the TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 circumbinary system so far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is much similar to Tatooine, Luke Skywalker's fictional home world, a sparsely inhabited circumbinary desert planet located in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories featured in <em>Star Wars</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to experts, TOI-1338 c is a gas giant and it is approximately 65 times the mass of Earth. It takes around 215 days to orbit its sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>BEBOP-1c has been named after the project that collected the data, as BEBOP stands for Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets. Researchers at the University of Birmingham led the study, which has been published in the journal <strong><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-023-01948-4">Nature Astronomy</a></strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts said in the paper, "We report the detection of a gas-giant planet in orbit around both stars of an eclipsing binary star system. The system discussed in this paper is only the second system known to host multiple planets." For the unversed, a binary star is a system of two stars that are gravitationally bound to and in orbit around each other.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Matthew Standing, who is the study's lead author, told Space.com, "Circumbinary planets were originally thought not to exist, since the binary stars stir up the planet-forming disks, creating a harsh environment for planets to form."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Standing, who is an astrophysicist at the Open University in England, said, "This all changed with the discovery of Kepler-16b in 2011 by the Kepler space telescope. This discovery showed that it must be possible for these planets to form."&nbsp;</p>

Only two worlds are known in the TOI-1338/BEBOP-1 circumbinary system so far. It is much similar to Tatooine, Luke Skywalker's fictional home world, a sparsely inhabited circumbinary desert planet located in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories featured in Star Wars. According to experts, TOI-1338 c is a gas giant and it is approximately 65 times the mass of Earth. It takes around 215 days to orbit its sun. BEBOP-1c has been named after the project that collected the data, as BEBOP stands for Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets. Researchers at the University of Birmingham led the study, which has been published in the journal Nature Astronomy. The system discussed in this paper is only the second system known to host multiple planets." For the unversed, a binary star is a system of two stars that are gravitationally bound to and in orbit around each other. Matthew Standing, who is the study's lead author, told Space.com, "Circumbinary planets were originally thought not to exist, since the binary stars stir up the planet-forming disks, creating a harsh environment for planets to form." Dr Standing, who is an astrophysicist at the Open University in England, said, "This all changed with the discovery of Kepler-16b in 2011 by the Kepler space telescope. This discovery showed that it must be possible for these planets to form." This means that the orbiter weighs lesser than that of its predecessor. However,&nbsp;the payload mass reduced from the orbiter has been added to the Chandrayaan-3 Lunar lander. The Indian Lunar spacecraft comprises three parts - Orbiter, Lander, and Rover.</p>

<p>"The added mass on the Lunar lander comprises more fuel, more ruggedisation, measures for failure tolerance and strengthening of landing legs and increased scientific payloads, larger solar panels for better power generation," Dr&nbsp;S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO told WION. He was responding to WION's question on whether the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft would weigh lesser than its predecessor (which weighed around 3.6 tonnes or 3,600kgs).</p>

<p>Addressing media on the sidelines of ISRO's maiden International Conference on Spacecraft Mission Operations, the Chief of the Indian Space Agency said that Chandrayaan-3 is to be launched in the 1-week window that begins on July 12<sup>th</sup>,&nbsp;if all were to go as per plan.</p>

<p>Elaborating on the status of Chandrayaan-3, he added that the spacecraft was undergoing testing of its propulsion module (orbiter), lander, and rover, while the LVM3 rocket is also being integrated. "India's largest rocket LVM3 will be integrated and ready for Chandrayaan-3 by June-end, whereas by early July the spacecraft would be ready," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Queried about how confident the positive mission outcome of Chandrayaan-3 is, Dr&nbsp;Somanath told WION that he is always confident, but space is an unforgiving domain, where only rigorous testing and clear decision-making yield favourable results. Smilingly, making a mention of luck being involved, he said that "even luck comes out of hard work and the perseverance to do the right thing at the right time".</p>

<p>India's latest Lunar mission will take the same path and trajectory as its predecessor, as it is a tried and tested route to the moon, which is at a distance of 3,84,000 kms from Earth. The journey is expected to take around a month and a half, as a circuitous route would be followed. In September 2019, India's second Lunar Mission Chandrayaan-2 crash-landed on the lunar surface, minutes before it was expected to make a controlled vertical landing at the Lunar South Pole. With a successful Lunar landing, India hopes to join the list of nations that includes the US, Russia, and China.&nbsp;</p>

Make sure that the exposure is between 3200 and 6400. “Generally, the best time of day to see the Milky Way is between 00:00 and 5:00 on nights with a new moon during the Milky Way season,” the blog stated.
