Actor-turned-politician Smriti Irani is one of the best-known faces of the Indian TV film industry. Irani became a household name after she played the role of Tulsi Virani in the hit TV show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and later in Ramayan, in which she played the role of Sita. However, now she's away from the TV but not from the spotlight.

The actress, who is now Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development, recently recalled how she learned a lesson about humanity when she was called to work a day after she had a miscarriage.

Speaking to Neelesh Misra on The Slow Interview, the former actress said that back then she was working on two shows simultaneously, one was Ekta Kapoor's Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and another was Ravi Chopra's Ramayan when she suffered a miscarriage.

Recalling the heartbreaking incident, she said as I was working a double shift and two daily soaps at that time and was not ever aware that she was pregnant.

"I was not aware that I am pregnant. I was on the set (of 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi') and I told them I am not well enough to shoot and asked to be allowed to go home. But still, I worked, and by the time they let me go, it was evening already. The doctor suggested, I go for a sonography. On my way, I started bleeding, and I remember it was raining. I stopped an auto and asked the driver to take me to the hospital. When I reached the hospital, a nurse came running, asking for an autograph... all while I was bleeding. I signed an autograph, and then asked her, 'admit kar loge? I think I have suffered a miscarriage'."

Ekta Kapoor's hit show has many characters, and it was easy for the makers to shift the schedule around any other character of the show, but in Chopra's show, there were not many options, and since she is playing one of the lead roles, she had to be on the set. Still, the makers of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi called her on the set, but Ravi Chopra, who could suffer after Smriti's absence, offered her leave and asked her to rest.

Recalling her chat with Ravi Chopra, Smriti said in Hindi, "He told me, 'tumhara dimag kharab hai' (Are you out of your mind)? Do you know how it feels to lose a child, you have just gone through that. Kal aane ki zaroorat nahi (No need to come tomorrow)."

"I, however, pushed and told him that it's a Sunday episode and (the character) Sita can't be replaced," to which the director replied that he will manage.

However, the scenario was different at Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, where she had to return to
work and showed the producer Ekta her medical reports as proof.

She also found out that a co-actor had told the producer that she was lying about her miscarriage.

"The person didn't realise that I have returned because I needed money to pay EMIs for my house. The next day, I took all my medical papers to Ekta to tell her it is not a drama. She got uncomfortable and told me not to show the papers. I told her, 'foetus bacha nahi, warna woh bhi dikha deti' (I would have shown you the foetus also had it been there)."

'Tandoori chicken' row erupts between BJP and opposition; TMC's Mahua Moitra takes a dig at Smriti Irani

Barely three days after Droupadi Murmu took oath as India’s 15th President, the tribal leader has found herself amid a controversy surrounding her constitutional designation. Reportedly, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, leader of India's opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), made a speech where he allegedly misgendered Murmu’s designation.

The INC leader allegedly called Murmu a ‘Rashtrapatni’, inviting the wrath of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It is pertinent to note that a President is called ‘Rashtrapati’ in Hindi which is a gender-neutral term. Anyone taking the office, whether a man, woman or any other person is referred to as the same.

The Constitution makes no difference in the gender of the occupant of the position either. However, Choudhary allegedly changed the last part of the word ‘pati’ meaning husband, to ‘patni’, meaning wife.

Ruling party corners Chowdhury and INC

As soon as the lower house of the parliament met on Thursday (July 28), senior BJP leader Smriti Irani raised the issue and cornered INC.

“A tribal woman from a poor family who created history is being continuously demeaned by the Congress,” she told the reporters.

Irani further claimed that it was INC President Sonia Gandhi who sanctioned Chowdhury’s remark and that both should issue an apology for disrespecting the entire tribal community, women, the poor and the downtrodden.

“Sonia Gandhi sanctioned the humiliation of a woman at the highest constitutional office in the country,” said Irani.

Irani was backed up by her colleague and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who stated, “I demand an apology from the President of Congress party who herself is a woman but has allowed her leader to speak like that. Sonia Gandhi should come before the nation and apologise for insulting the President.”

Chowdhury issues a clarification

Soon, a clamour ensued and the house was adjourned for a brief period. After the controversy snowballed, Chowdhury took to Twitter to issue a clarification.

The INC leader tweeted a video where he could be heard saying, “Whoever is the President of India, be it Brahmin, or Adivasi, the President is the President for us. Our respect is for the post.”

He further added, “Yesterday when we were protesting at Vijay Chowk, reporters asked us where we wanted to go. I told them I want to visit the President’s house. Just once, I said “Rashtrapatni”...The reporter repeated it to me and I said I might have said that by mistake and it would be better if they didn’t broadcast it. They (BJP) are creating a furore because of this. I made a mistake, just once and in one word.”

Telangana minister KT Rama Rao writes to Irani, urges cooperation to protect livelihoods of people in the textile industry

Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao has urged Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani for cooperation to protect livelihoods of people in the textile industry.

"Consumption patterns across national/ international markets will change in the post COVID-19 world, e.g. more spending will be on healthcare, resulting in higher opportunities from healthcare institutions and also the technical textiles segment which caters to medical textiles. Retail channels will shift more towards online than brick and mortar stores, which point to need for fast fashion and quicker turnaround at the factory. This points to better integration of the segments i.e. having integrated textile zones to improve efficiencies," KTR said in the letter.

"Providing wage support of up to 50 per cent of wages, contingent on continued employment of the workforce. This support can be given for a period of up to 6 months, in the form of a long-term loan which the industry would need to repay in instalments after a stipulated period," the letter further said.

Urging for statutory payments, he said, "Allow the industry a one-time extension of 3 months for the deposit of statutory dues of PF and ESI. This will release some cash for the industry."

"Facilitate higher temporary credit facilities (up to 30 per cent of current limits) to meet the cash losses during this slowdown, so that it will enable the industry to meet its obligations towards its vendors and statutory payments so that the entire supply chain is protected. The Govt of India could consider funding this through a concessional line of credit so that the banks are adequately supported, and the funds return to the Government in due course," it read.

The letter further read, "While the RBI has already announced measures to improve liquidity and reduce the interest rates, this can be further augmented by a complete interest waiver or an interest subvention scheme of 2-3 per cent on all loans (including working capital credit) availed by the sector as has been done in the past under TUFS. Further, a special moratorium of 1 year may also be considered."

"Further, in order to encourage faster reboot of the sector, the Centre could consider 50 per cent yarn subsidy across the handloom industry. As a special case, the GST Council should also consider complete waiver of GST on handloom products for a period of 2 years to boost the sector," he added.
Have requested Election Commission to take action: Smriti Irani on Rahul Gandhi's rape remark

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, Irani said: "Today, I had a Congress MP chastising me for, he said, I spoke aggressively. In the House, some male MPs came towards me rolling up their sleeves."

"After that, a youth MP said why did Smriti even speak? I am saddened. If speaking is a crime since I am a BJP member, I want to see in Parliament on Monday how is the opposition going to punish me further for speaking in the interest of women," she said.

The matter of alleged misbehavior was raised by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi after the House met at 1.30 pm following an adjournment earlier.
"She was expressing her opinion. The behavior is most uncalled for. Call the two members. They should apologise," he said.

BJP MP Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo said one of the MPs behaved in a threatening way. "He pulled up his sleeve. He came forward," she said.

Meenakshi Lekhi, who was in the Chair, asked Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to talk to the party MPs regarding the apology and adjourned the House till 2.30 pm.

He said that it was wrong to come in front of a woman MP in a 'threatening position.' "She was expressing her opinion. The House earlier witnessed a clash between Congress and BJP members with both accusing each other of politicising the brutal incident in which the Unnao rape survivor was set ablaze. Irani accused the opposition parties of being quiet "when the rape was used as a political weapon" in West Bengal panchayat elections.
