The photo fuelled speculation immediately.

"If the object in the photo is a foldable phone, it is highly likely that it was secretly smuggled to North Korea via China," South Korea's Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported.&nbsp;

Kim Jong Un is known for his love of gadgets. He has in past, been pictured using what looked like Apple products, including iPads and Macbooks.

United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) estimates that only about 19 per cent of the North Korean population has access to mobile phones.

<h2>The missile launch</h2>

The ICBM launched on July 12 has been fired only once before, in April.

On Wednesday, the missile flew 1001 kilometres at a maximum altitude of 6,648 km before splashing into the East Sea, according to KCNA. The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.

KCNA further said that the launch was a "grand explosion" that shook "the whole planet". Footage on the state media showed the missile blasting off into the sky.

Kim vowed that "a series of stronger military offensive" would be launched until the United States and South Korea change their policies towards North Korea, the agency added.&nbsp;

Citing the "unstable situation" on the Korean peninsula, Kim also called for "more intense efforts" to boost North Korea's nuclear arsenal.&nbsp;

The confirmation of the launch -- which the South Korean military had reported on Wednesday -- came with relations between the two Koreas at one of their lowest points ever.&nbsp;

Diplomacy has stalled. Kim Jong Un has called for ramping up weapons deployment. This includes tactical nukes.

The research conducted by a US-based non-profit Sapien Labs collected data from some 27,969 adults aged 18 and 24 from over 40 countries, including 4,000 Indians found that young adults who own smartphones as young as six reported more suicidal thoughts, and aggression feelings as adults than those who got phones late, TOI reported.&nbsp;

The study showed as many as 74 per cent of female respondents who received mobiles by the age of six were found experiencing more serious mental health challenges as adults with that come under "distressed" or "struggling" as per the MHQ range. The Mental Health Quotient examines an individual on the basis of six parameters including mood and outlook, social life, cognition, adaptability and resilience, drive and motivation and the mind-body connection.

It added that for those who got smartphones 61 per cent and 52 per cent were experiencing problems who got smartphones at the age of 10 and 15. People who got smartphones at 18, 46 per cent were struggling and distressed in life.&nbsp;

In the case of males, the trend was the same but was a bit less acute. Some 42 per cent of the men who got smartphones at the age of six were struggling and experiencing distress in life. Furthermore, the bar fell to 36 per cent for those who got an electronic device at the age of 18.&nbsp;

These findings come against a backdrop of a progressive global decline in the mental health of the young generation that began around 2010-2014.&nbsp;

McAfee's Global Connected Family study last year stated that 83 per cent of the children used smartphones aged 10-14, which is seven per cent above the international average.&nbsp;

For parents, the findings gave a clear message, "Delay giving your child a smartphone as much as possible- the older the better. That said, the peer pressure is high&nbsp;and it is best if no one has one rather than one child being left out. At the same time, focus on your child's social development-it is fundamentally important for their mental well-being and capability for navigating the world and is what has been displaced by the use of phones."

The Internet sector is one of the largest online markets in the world which has been adding new users every year at a rapid rate. But after seeing rapid growth in this sector for nearly a decade, the numbers seem stuck now at 800 million users for two years.&nbsp;

The data from the telecommunications regulator show that the country earlier had 837 million Internet subscriptions as of June 2022, out of which 92 per cent were mobile broadband connections. TRAI defines broadband as a connection with a speed of at least 512 kilobits per second.

The number of connections in January 2021 was 734 million, and in October 2022, the latest month for which data is available, it was 789 million, with an increase of only about 7 per cent. In contrast, from 2016 to 2020, the number of mobile Internet connections doubled every year.

Analysts of these trends say that this is due to the rising price of smartphones which is, in turn, driven by global supply chain problems and chip shortages.&nbsp;The Indian government has said in the past that the country is the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer after China but still relies on imports for semiconductors that power smartphones.&nbsp;

A market research company, International Data Corporation also estimated in 2022 that smartphone prices had risen by 20 per cent on average since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Several leading phone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Samsung increased prices after launching phones.

Another market research company, Counterpoint, also researched this area and found that the smartphone market in India had failed all the growth expectations n 2022. The reasons they cited were-

1) First, it was due to the shortages in mobile components 
2) Second, it was due to higher retail prices and inflation 
But despite having the supply chain back on track by the first half of 2022, demand did not improve as expected.

"The weak demand was especially felt in the entry and mid-level price bands", said the company, which estimates that smartphone sales in India could fall by 5 per cent until March 2023.

On an earnings call in November 2022, Mr Gopal Vittal, chief executive of Bharti Airtel, said, "Imagine a poor customer who has a feature phone and who’s made a decision to change to a smartphone. And he’s been told that the price is about 6,500 to 7,000 rupees (S$105 to S$113). But he lands in the store and finds that it’s actually 10,000 rupees. He will go away".&nbsp;

As a result, the market for used phones has grown. Cashify, an online resale marketplace, recorded a 50 per cent growth in revenue from 3.3 billion rupees in 2021 to 4.9 billion rupees in 2022.

The immediate future for the smartphone market is not rosy, as many telecom analysts believe that any significant growth in this field will be seen only in three to five years from now. And this growth will only be possible when new production incentives will be given to domestic chip manufacturing.&nbsp;

In April 2021, India announced incentives worth 760 billion rupees to companies manufacturing mobile parts, semiconductors and displays in the country. Now, about 15 per cent to 20 per cent of Indian phone is made in India. The government aims to increase this from 35 per cent to 40 per cent.

“During the meeting, a broad consensus emerged among stakeholders on the adoption of USB Type-C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops etc. Further, it was deliberated that a different charging port may be adopted for feature phones," consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh was quoted as saying in Indian media.

The meeting was attended by representatives from industry associations such as the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and educational institutions including IIT&nbsp;Kanpur, and IIT (BHU),&nbsp;Varanasi.

In the meeting, the stakeholders agreed on a phased roll-out of uniform charging ports for “effective implementation and easy adoption”.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest podcast 'Power On’ revealed that Apple is most likely to ditch the notch on some 2022 devices.

According to Gurman, who specializes in Apple products, the tech company would release a redesigned MacBook Air with an M2 chip and wireless charging for the 2022 iPad Pro.

Gurman claimed the new M2 chip would be "marginally faster" than the M1. It should have an octa-core CPU and 9- or 10-core GPU, which would be an upgrade over the 8-core GPU on the current Air.

A new, internally-developed chip is also expected for the Mac Pro and an AR/VR headset, which is likely to make an appearance at WWDC in the summer.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Apple will be launching iPhone 14 series in two models—iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

It is being said that the tech giant has decided to drop the mini series after it didn’t see great sales numbers compared to the other models.

There are also claims hinting towards the inclusion of an under-display fingerprint. Face ID and fingerprint scanning together would help to improve the authentication process on the next-gen iPhones.&nbsp;

As far as the chipset is concerned, iPhone 14 may come with the A16 Bionic chipset. Apart from that, there are also claims that 2022 models would feature a Type-C USB port.

Engineers from the University of California, San Diego, created a thin, flexible strip that can be worn on a fingertip and generate small amounts of energy when a person's finger sweats or presses against it.&nbsp;

According to the researchers who took part in this study, wearing this strip for 10 hours while sleeping could help charge electronic equipment that could run a watch for 24 hours.&nbsp;

WhatsApp, the hugely popular instant messaging app, has announced that it is testing new capability that will free its users from smartphones.

Currently, users can run their WhatsApp account via other devices (like desktops) but the user needs to be connected to internet via smartphone on which respective WhatsApp account is installed. The phone cannot be switched off and in case of network loss, the app does not work simultaneously on other devices.

The new capabilities appear to be aimed at decreasing users' dependence on smartphones in order to run Facebook-owned WhatsApp on other devices.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Facebook engineers said the new feature would allow for the hugely popular service be used on multiple "non-phone" devices without needing to connect to the smartphone app.&nbsp;

"The new WhatsApp multi-device architecture removes these hurdles" by no longer requiring a smartphone to perform every operation, the company said.&nbsp;

Smartphones have literally become the "place where we live," and a large study has claimed this.&nbsp;

Researchers at University College London (UCL), in a study that involved nine countries and conducted for more than a year, found that people feel the same about their smartphones as they do about their homes.&nbsp;

"The smartphone is no longer just a device that we use, it's become the place where we live," Prof Daniel Miller, who led the study, was quoted as saying by The Guardian.&nbsp;

But right now the set up of 4G cellular network on the Moon appears to be for scientific and research purposes.

"The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds and provide more reliability than current standards," NASA noted in its contract award announcement.

The grant given to Nokia is part of USD 370 million worth of contracts signed under NASA`s "Tipping Point" selections, meant to advance research and development for space exploration.

According to United Press International, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a live broadcast said that the space agency must quickly develop new technologies for living and working on the moon if it wants to realise its goal to have astronauts working at a lunar base by 2028.

"We need power systems that can last a long time on the surface of the moon, and we need habitation capability on the surface," Bridenstine said.

Nokia`s research arm, Bell Labs, provided more details in a Twitter thread. The company intends for the network to support wireless operation of lunar rovers and navigation, as well as streaming video.

"Working with our partners at @Int_Machines, this groundbreaking network will be the critical communications fabric for data transmission applications, including the control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation over lunar geography and streaming of high definition video," Bell Labs said in a tweet.

This is not Nokia`s first attempt to launch an LTE network on the moon. It was planned to do this in 2018 in collaboration with PTScientists, a German space company, and Vodafone UK to launch an LTE network at the site of the Apollo 17 landing, but the mission never got off the ground.
