COVID 19: Pakistan's cases cross 260,000 mark before Eid

Police, paramilitary rangers and other law enforcement agencies arrested several men and women, including students protesting against enforced disappearances in Sindh from Karachi press club on Saturday.

According to details when protesters started chanting slogans against enforced disappearances, a large number of Police, Paramilitary Rangers, and plainclothes personnel of intelligence agencies attacked peaceful protesters. They baton charged and tortured elderly men, women, young girls and students.

Many were injured. Security forces manhandled girls and threw them into police mobile vehicles and were shifted to an unknown place.

It is learned that since the last two weeks, more than 200 Sindhis and Mohajirs belonging to MQM and different groups of Jiye Sindh have been arrested by Paramilitary Rangers and other law enforcement agencies in Karachi, Hyderabad and other cities of Sindh.

No arrested person was presented before any court of law, said sources.

A minimum of 172 seats are required to form a government in Pakistan's national assembly. So, if any other coalition partner pulls out,&nbsp;Imran Khan can face a vote of no confidence in the Pakistan&nbsp;assembly.

Of tons of chillies that Pakistan produces, Sindh accounts for 85 per cent. The Kunri region in Sindh is the famed red chilli capital of Asia.

Last year, the production of chillies fell by 40 per cent in Pakistan due to climate change.&nbsp;

Heatwaves and warmer climatic conditions had an adverse impact on red chilli crops in the country.&nbsp;

Chillies are a mainstay of Pakistan's economy and less production translates into big losses for the region and the country.

According to reports, Pakistan could produce over 120,000 tons of red chilli crops in 2018 which dropped to around 70-80,000 tons in the following year.&nbsp;

If the heat spell and drier conditions continue, it will only spell bad news for the chilli market in Pakistan. Lesser output translates into higher prices for the crop and nobody is willing to import expensive chillies. Unsold stock will only add to farmers' woes and burden the economy which is already in the doldrums.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, it is found that climate change is spurring growth of green cover in the Arctic as warmer temperatures create a conducive environment for foliage to thrive.&nbsp;

The phenomenon, 'Arctic greening' is being studied by a host of experts to analyse how climate change spurs shift in temperatures, prompting vegetation in parts of the Arctic.&nbsp;

Unsold stock will only add to farmers' woes and burden the economy which is already in the doldrums. Sindhis celebrate 116th birth anniversary of late GM Syed with fervour

India has summoned a senior official of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/scuffle-breaks-out-between-bajrang-dal-and-security-forces-near-pakistan-high-commission-272718">Pakistan High Commission</a> and lodged a strong protest over the recent cases of abduction of minor girls from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan, and urged for the safe return of them to their families, government sources said. 
 
The development comes after incidents of kidnapping of minor girls from the Hindu community came to light in Pakistan earlier this month. 
 
Two minor girls, Shanti Meghwad and Sarmi Meghwad, belonging to the minority Hindu community were abducted on January 14. They belong to Umar Village in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-facing-a-locust-crisis-more-than-40-crops-under-risk-263563">Tharparkar</a> of Sindh province. 
 
In another incident, a minor girl, Mehak, also belonging to the minority Hindu community, was abducted from Jacobabad district of Sindh province on January 15. 
 
"Pakistan has been conveyed the grave concerns as expressed amongst various quarters of the Indian civil society at such a shocking and deplorable incident involving minor girls from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan. The incidents have been strongly condemned and asked for the immediate safe return of the girls to their families," government sources said. 
 
India has time and again lodged several protests over the abduction and forced marriage of women from the Hindu community in the neighboring country.

Moreover, dozens of animals have been killed in the region during the last 24 hours. 
 
The incidents of thunder strike took place at Islamkot, Nagarparkar, Mithi, Chhachhro and other areas of Tharparkar. 
 
An incident of a thunderbolt in Kotdiji in Khairpur district set a tree on fire. 
 
According to rescue officials, several injured have been shifted to different hospitals, including the district Civil Hospital Mithi. 
 
Adding that over 16 injured were shifted to health facilities since Wednesday late evening, officials confirmed that at least ten&nbsp;bodies were brought to different hospitals in the region. 
 
On Thursday, the district administration issued a notification of emergency across the district, cancelling leaves of employees of all departments. 
As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a westerly wave is affecting lower parts of the country.

Adding that 90 per cent of the cases were pending trial citing various reasons, the official data said an investigation by police into the majority of the cases remain inconclusive.

This comes after Inspector General of Police (IG) Syed Kaleem Imam chaired a meeting to look into the status of investigations into Karo-Kari killings in the region.

Imam had directed the police to prepare a detailed report on a case-to-case basis about the conviction and release of people in connection with Karo-Kari killings across the province.

Besides, he urged officials to ensure no loopholes are left during the probe and the same was adequately pursued before courts.

According to police, Karo-Kari killings, a heinous trend criticised by the authorities as well as human rights organisations, continues unabated as they find it hard to investigate such killings as both aggrieved and accused parties generally belong to the same family or tribe.

A violent mob in Pakistan vandalised three Hindu temples and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-minority-members-stage-walkout-after-anti-hindu-remarks-by-pak-lawmaker-204474">attacked members of the minority community</a>&nbsp;on Saturday.

The mob which went furious over allegations that a Hindu school principal had allegedly committed blasphemy also targetted&nbsp;multiple houses belonging to the minority community and a school in Ghotki in Pakistan's Sindh province.

The violence followed after an FIR was registered against the principal of Sindh Public School on the complaint of a student`s father.

The FIR was lodged under Article 295(c) - that pertains to "derogatory remarks in respect of the Holy Prophet - of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Videos that surfaced on the social media showed a group of people violently wielding sticks on a Hindu temple and the school.

After the incident, large contingents of police and paramilitary Rangers were deployed in Ghotki.

The residents have demanded the arrest the principal. Also, religious groups and organisations have called for a shutter down strike. Shops in the region remained closed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, due to the violent situation prevailing in the region, the police has put the alleged accused under "safe custody".

The authorities have also launched an investigation into the incident.

The rioters allegedly included supporters of radical religious leader Pir Abdul Haq alias Mian Mithu, who is widely accused of involvement in forced conversion of Hindu women in Sindh, IANS stated.

Khan`s address to a community that has been reduced to less than two per cent over the decades following the creation of Pakistan, has ironically come at a time when the country is increasing witnessing anti-government protests by Hindus and Sikhs against the dire human rights situation of religious minorities, especially in the Sindh province.

The impact of these protests was manifested in a joint letter written by as many as ten US lawmakers, urging President Donald Trump to raise the matter during his meeting with Khan last month.&nbsp;

The letter highlighted the widespread issue of enforced disappearances at the hands of the Pakistani government and shed light on the human rights abuse of minorities, including the abduction and forced conversion of Hindu and Christian girls.

Before being elected as Prime Minister, Khan had admitted in multiple TV interviews the involvement of Pakistan`s intelligence agencies in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings and vowed to resign if he was unable to put an end to the practice, holding those involved responsible.

For the situation of minorities to improve in Pakistan, it would require more from the state than the isolated efforts such as restoration of Hindu temples, or the visit to one as a display of sanctimony.

Turning blind eye to the situation back home, he has now instead intensified his rhetorics against the BJP and RSS, so much so that even his independence day speech was majorly focused on attacking the two.&nbsp;
