<p>Pakistan’s top anti-corruption agency National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in 2018 had accused Sharif of causing damages to public funds by ordering the cancellation of a contract given to bidder Chaudhry Latif and Sons for the controversial low-cost Ashiana housing scheme.</p>

<p>The housing scheme was launched by the provincial government of Punjab back in 2010.</p>

<p>Instead, Sharif awarded the contract to Lahore Casa Developers, a proxy group of Paragon City Private Limited. This resulted in a loss of 193 million Pakistani rupees.</p>

<p>He was also accused of directing the Punjab Land Development Company (PLDC) to assign the project to LDA (Lahore Development Authority), which caused an estimated loss of 715 million Pakistani rupees and the ultimate failure of the housing project.</p>

<p>On November 2, Judge Malik Ali Zulqarnain Awan of the accountability court reserved the verdict after concluding the final arguments presented by the counsels and the NAB prosecutors on acquittal pleas, Geo News reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There is no probability of the conviction in the case,” the judge observed in his judgment.</p>

<p>After Pakistan's jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's sentence was suspended on Tuesday (August 29) in the Toshakhana case, Shehbaz Sharif reacted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. &nbsp;</p>

<p>After the verdict was announced post-hearing on the case, the former premier&nbsp;lashed out at the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial saying that he tried saving the "blue-eyed boy" or "Ladley" Imran Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, he also said that the verdict is not final as the sentence is only "suspended, not terminated".</p>

<p>In a post on X, Sharif wrote, "Chief Justice's message of 'Good to see you'&nbsp;and 'Wishing you good luck'&nbsp;reached Islamabad High Court. Before the decision comes, everyone knows what the decision will be, so it should be a momentary concern for the justice system. If a clear message is received from the higher judiciary, then what else should the subordinate court do?" (English translation of his post on X read)</p>

<p>He further criticised the verdict saying that "the role of justice system will be written in the dark chapter of history".</p>

<p>Shehbaz Sharif also condemned its alleged biases in favour of Imran Khan by drawing parallels with rulings in the Nawaz Sharif case. "A monitoring judge was appointed to ensure the punishment of Nawaz Sharif, the Chief Justice himself became a monitoring judge to save Ladley,"&nbsp;he wrote in his post on X, adding, "Scales tilted to one side and a justice system that undermines justice are not acceptable."&nbsp;</p>

India wants normal ties with Pak but...: New Delhi reacts to Shehbaz Sharif's 'no war' comment

<p>Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has hinted that the elections could be delayed, despite the parliament dissolution&nbsp;scheduled to take place later this month. In an interview, Sharif said elections should be held under the new census. If the new census data is notified, then the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be obligated to do new de-limitations, which may push the election timeline. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“We have to hold the elections on the basis of the new census...When a census has been conducted, the [polls] should be held on its basis unless there is an obstacle that cannot be overcome. But I don’t see [any such hurdle],” the PM said.</p>

<p>When quizzed if holding elections, based on the new census will delay the elections or not, Shehbaz dropped the ball in ECP's court saying it was their job.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Monday (July 31) also iterated that polls will be delayed by at least three months or 90 days if the fresh census is taken into account.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, ECP has already explicitly expressed its inability to hold the polls based on the latest census results.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The general elections 2023 for the national and provincial assemblies will be conducted as per the limits of the constituencies published by the Commission on August 5 last year,” a senior ECP official was quoted as saying by Dawn.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The official added that a constitutional amendment would be required following the official publication of census results, which was technically not possible after the acceptance of the resignations of the lawmakers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The ECP will have no other option but to hold upcoming general elections on the basis of the existing delimitation,” he added.</p>

<p>“Resolving Pakistan’s structural challenges, including long-term BOP [balance of payments] pressures, will require continued adjustment and creditor support beyond the current programme period,” said IMF, adding that a successor arrangement was needed to restore the country's medium-term viability and capacity to repay.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An accountability court in Pakistan acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his family members on Thursday in a multi-million-dollar money laundering case after the anti-corruption agency failed to provide any solid evidence against them.</p>

<p>"An Accountability Court acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz, his wife Nusrat, his son Hamza and daughter Javaria in the PKR 7 billion money laundering case filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in 2020," a court official told PTI.</p>

<p>The official said the court acquitted the premier and his family members after the NAB failed to provide any solid evidence against the suspects regarding the laundering of millions of dollars abroad, especially to the United Kingdom.</p>

<p>The corruption case was filed by the NAB in 2020 during the tenure of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government.</p>

<p>The Sharif family termed the case a political victimisation.</p>

<p>Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader barrister Aitzaz Ahsan alleged that former Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and the military establishment had rescued the Sharif family from conviction in corruption cases against them.</p>

Pak court acquits PM Shehbaz Sharif in money laundering case

<p>Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hinted that the general elections might be held in November after saying that he will hand over the charge to the caretaker set-up next month before the completion of the assembly’s tenure.</p>

<p>“Next month our government will complete its tenure, [but] we will leave before the completion of our tenure and an interim government will come in,” the prime minister said while speaking at the Government College Women’s University in Sialkot on Sunday, reported Dawn.</p>

<p>The five-year term of the incumbent parliament, the National Assembly, will end on August 12 at midnight.</p>

<p>According to Pakistani election laws, general elections should take place within 60 days if the elected house completes its constitutional tenure of five years.</p>

<p>If the National Assembly is dissolved prematurely, then elections are held within 90 days of the dissolution.</p>

<p>A few days ago, the prime minister had said that his government would complete its tenure which is ending on August 13.</p>

<p>According to reports, Shehbaz decided to end his tenure early on the advice of his ally Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari.</p>

<p>“We cleaned the landmines laid in the way of Pakistan’s interests” and “doused the fire” that erupted because of “mismanagement, inefficiency and conspiracy in running the affairs of the country, including the economy and foreign affairs”, the PM said.</p>

<p>Sharif said that the coalition government was “one of its kind” in Pakistan’s democratic history, which was formed for the briefest of periods but faced the “toughest challenges and difficulties”.</p>

<p>“This government has actually set a standard and direction — that despite lack of time and never-ending difficulties, the country can be steered out of crises,” he said, adding that this could only be achieved through hard work and by working sincerely, reports Dawn newspaper.</p>

<p>The Pakistani premier asserted that his government “sacrificed politics to protect the state”.</p>

<p>“We did not worry about our vote bank but worried about the consistent increase in the State Bank of Pakistan.”</p>

<p>Talking about the IMF deal, Sharif blamed the previous government of almost tanking the agreement, claiming that it violated it and pushed the country to the brink of default.</p>

<p>“While we were trying to restore the programme, former rulers were busy hatching anti-state conspiracies day and night,” he said, adding that despite all the roadblocks, his government did not lose hope and successfully reached an arrangement with the IMF.</p>

<p>“Today, the danger of Pakistan’s default and their (former rulers) impure wishes have been buried.”</p>

<p>Chaudhry, who was hired as an analyst, alleged that he was fired hours after raising the questions during a press conference.</p>

<p>According to local media reports, the press conference happened on June 30 at Punjab Governor’s House during which Sharif was accompanied by federal ministers Ishaq Dar and Marriyum Aurangzeb.</p>

<p>During the presser, the journalist said that his questions reflect the problems faced by the entire journalist community in the country, reported <em>The Nation</em> news outlet.</p>

<p>Chaudhry reportedly told the PM that the media is unable to function independently in the current period and said that despite the ruling coalition parties, including PML(N) and PPP, supporting freedom of expression, the reality was starkly different.</p>

<p>"The current period is the worst related to restrictions," he told the prime minister and asked when and how the restrictions on the media will end, <em>Geo News</em> reported.</p>

<p>To which, the PM reportedly deflected the question and asked Chaudhry to voice any legitimate concerns he had with the information minister.</p>

<p>"If you have something legitimate to say, please speak up," he said.</p>

<p>Responding to the development, Pakistan’s Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb refuted the journalist’s claims and added that he was never hired by PTV as a permanent or contract employee.</p>

<p>“I know Azam Chaudhry and am aware of his views but despite this, he was invited to [PM Shehbaz] presser and allowed to ask a question,” Aurangzeb said on Tuesday.</p>

<p>She further said that had there been any reservations about the journalist’s views, he would not have been invited to the press conference.</p>

<p>She claimed Chaudhry was part of the PTV’s analyst poll since last September and he is still part of the same panel at the state broadcaster.</p>

<p>Chaudhry claimed that he had not been informed in writing by the employer about his expulsion till now.</p>

<p>Suleman, appearing alongside his counsel, was made one of the prime suspects by the&nbsp;Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the case, while&nbsp;the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had nominated him in an assets-beyond-means reference.</p>

<p>During the hearing,&nbsp;the joint investigation team (JIT) members were asked to show “any iota of incriminating evidence” against Suleman. Surprisingly, the JIT said despite going through all data, they did not have any concrete evidence against the accused.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Tell me straight away, don’t make up stories, I have read it all. I will send all the FIA people to jail now, remember this. I want an answer, what proof of crime was there with the challan?” Judge Fakhar Behzad asked.</p>

<p>The judge observed that “in the wake of questions and answers...I am of the firm view that no incriminating material is available on the record on the basis of which any valid charge can be framed against the accused […] They are discharged from this case".&nbsp;</p>

<p>After giving the dressing down, the judge directed authorities to take action on FIA officials for launching the bogus case, "so that&nbsp;in future other officers should learn the lesson and should restrain themselves from obeying the illegal orders of their superiors".&nbsp;</p>

<p>In May, earlier this year, Shehbaz and his son Hamza were declared innocent in the case as well.&nbsp;The supplementary report stated that Sharif, his wife&nbsp;Nusrat Shehbaz, and his son Hamza Shehbaz&nbsp;were found to have no involvement in the money laundering scheme. It added that corruption allegations could not be proved or substantiated under the&nbsp;NAB Amendment Act.</p>

<h2><strong>Why was Suleman accused?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>70-year-old Shehbaz, and his sons Hamza, 47, and Suleman, 40, were booked in November 2020 by the FIA under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act.</p>

<p>According to the FIA report submitted in the court, the probe team had "detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of Rs 16.3bn was committed during 2008-18. The FIA examined the money trail of 17,000 credit transactions."</p>

<p>Benami transactions are those transactions that are made by a person without using his name or by using the name of another. The amount was kept in hidden accounts and given to Shehbaz in a personal capacity, the FIA argued earlier.&nbsp;</p>
