Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team has asked the FBI to look into claims that women were offered money to fabricate sexual assault allegations against Mueller, who leads the probe into Russia's attempts to influence the US&nbsp;election in 2016.

"When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation," Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, said on Tuesday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment.

Jack Burkman, a lawyer and Republican operative who has in the past promoted right-wing conspiracies on social media, told Reuters he was speaking to five women who claimed they were sexually assaulted by Mueller, and denied paying them for the information.

He said he would have a news conference close to Washington on Thursday with one of the women who claimed she was sexually assaulted by Mueller in 2010, and that the other four women still needed to be vetted.

Jennifer Taub, a professor at Vermont Law School, said she received an email on October 22 from an individual offering to compensate her if she would discuss her "past encounters" with Mueller, who she says she has never met.

Taub said she found the email, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, to be "creepy" and forwarded it to Mueller's office. The email was sent to her by a person who claimed to be a researcher at Surefire Intelligence, Ltd.

Reuters was unable to connect with anyone at phone numbers listed on Surefire Intelligence's website.

Burkman declined to say if he was working with Surefire.

Mueller is leading the politically sensitive investigation into Russian meddling and possible collusion between Republican Donald Trump's 2016 campaign team and Russian officials.

Burkman has been critical of the Mueller probe and sought to raise funds for Rick Gates and Michael Flynn, two former Trump aides who pleaded guilty to charges brought against them by Mueller's team.

Trump denies any collusion and has repeatedly described Mueller's probe as a partisan "witch hunt."

Russia denies the allegations that it interfered in the election.

Former union minister MJ Akbar's lawyer said in court on Thursday that "irreparable damage"&nbsp;had been caused to his reputation. The court was hearing the criminal defamation case Akbar has filed against the journalist Priya Ramani.&nbsp;

As many as 16 women have accused Akbar of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct. Akbar however&nbsp;zeroed in on Ramani because he says she <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/metoo-union-minister-mj-akbar-files-defamation-case-against-journalist-priya-ramani-171563">began "this campaign" against him</a>.&nbsp;

"Irreparable damage caused to Akbar’s reputation which he has built over 40 years. Articles in international and national media quoted these defamatory tweets," Luthra said.&nbsp;

She then added that "tweets are defamatory unless Ramani proves anything".&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ramani was the first person to describe Akbar's misconduct — without naming him. She wrote, in 2017, about how Akbar had interviewed her in a Mumbai hotel room when she had been 23 years old. Akbar had been 43 at the time.&nbsp;

The other allegations against Akbar came after India's own #MeToo movement kicked off with the actor Tanushree Dutta accusing Nana Patekar of sexual misconduct.&nbsp;

More trouble is in store for MJ Akbar as&nbsp;twenty women journalists came forward on Tuesday demanding the hearing of their testimonies against him.

The women journalists who were associated with the former junior external affairs minister during his career as a journalist came forward after MJ Akbar filed a defamation case against Priya Ramani.

The case against Priya Ramani will be heard in the Delhi Patiala House court on Thursday.

Ramani was the first woman to come out with her account of alleged sexual harassment by the former minister.

Following her disclosure,&nbsp;more women came out with their stories stating&nbsp;incidents where they were allegedly assaulted by Akbar.

The complaints by the women show a common pattern to the incidents.

The complainant state that Akbar would set up job interviews with aspiring women journalists in hotel rooms and would repeatedly call them to his office cabin for meaningless conversation.&nbsp;

He would also send them out of the workplace and meet them at a hotel at odd hours. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A woman accused him claiming that he would open his hotel room door to her wearing only his underwear. The woman had been in her early 20's at the time. She had thought she was going to a job interview.&nbsp;

Last Friday, the US-based CNN journalist Majlie de Puy Kamp accused Akbar of molesting her when she was an 18-year-old intern at the Asian Age in Delhi. On her last day of work, she said, she had gone to say goodbye to him, and he had forcibly kissed her.&nbsp;

She said Akbar had inserted his tongue into her mouth.&nbsp;

She added that her parents, both of whom were foreign correspondents, had been friends with Akbar, which is how she had got her internship.&nbsp;

The incident came to limelight as several Indian women from various fields had been disclosing on Twitter about the sexual harassment and sexual assault that they have faced.&nbsp;

Allegations have been made against many prominent men from film and music fraternity.

The actor Alok Nath filed a civil defamation case on Monday against the writer-producer&nbsp;Vinta Nanda.&nbsp;Nanda had accused Alok Nath of having raped her 19 years ago.

Nath, in his complaint, asked for a written apology and Re 1 compensation.&nbsp;

Nath, in a&nbsp;Facebook post, had said said she had been raped — more than once — by an "actor par excellence who is known as the most #Sanskaari (Cultured) person in the film and television industry".&nbsp;

When she was asked a day later if it was Alok Nath, she said yes.&nbsp;

Nath's lawyer had earlier threatened Nanda with a defamation suit saying if the accusations continued they would seek an injunction so that "she (Nanda) can't make baseless allegations in media and defame my client". &nbsp;

Responding to this Nanda said, "we will respond to the notice once we get it and I assure all of you that we will fight this battle right till the end".

While granting the bail, the High Court judge, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan laid down the conditions that Bishop Franco Mulakkal should not enter Kerala except for appearing before&nbsp;the probe&nbsp;officer once in&nbsp;two weeks.

The court also directed the bishop&nbsp;to surrender his passport before the court.

The conditions will be applicable till a chargesheet is filed.

On October 3rd, Bishop&nbsp;Mulakkal&nbsp;was denied bail by the court on prosecutions' argument that the accused, holding a high position in society will try to influence witnesses in the case if he is granted bail.

The 54-year-old Bishop, currently lodged in a sub-jail in Pala in Kottayam district, moved the High Court again after a magistrate court extended his judicial remand.

In September, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/kerala-nun-rape-case-bishop-franco-mulakkal-arrested-167036">Mulakkal -- head of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, Punjab -- was arrested </a>in Tripunithura after three days of questioning in the case where he was&nbsp;accused of repeatedly raping a&nbsp;senior nun between 2014 to 2016.

The nun had alleged that Bishop Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions.

The nun also said she had to approach the police as church authorities did not act on her repeated complaints against the clergyman.

However, the bishop denied the charges.&nbsp;

Kerala High Court has laid down the conditions that Bishop Franco Mulakkal should not enter Kerala & should surrender his passport before the court. https://t.co/qvd7FsQgfy — ANI (@ANI) October 15, 2018 × While granting the bail, the High Court judge, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan laid down the conditions that Bishop Franco Mulakkal should not enter Kerala except for appearing before the probe officer once in two weeks. The court also directed the bishop to surrender his passport before the court. The conditions will be applicable till a chargesheet is filed. On October 3rd, Bishop Mulakkal was denied bail by the court on prosecutions' argument that the accused, holding a high position in society will try to influence witnesses in the case if he is granted bail. The 54-year-old Bishop, currently lodged in a sub-jail in Pala in Kottayam district, moved the High Court again after a magistrate court extended his judicial remand. In September, Mulakkal -- head of the Roman Catholic Diocese in Jalandhar, Punjab -- was arrested in Tripunithura after three days of questioning in the case where he was accused of repeatedly raping a senior nun between 2014 to 2016. The nun had alleged that Bishop Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions. The nun also said she had to approach the police as church authorities did not act on her repeated complaints against the clergyman. However, the bishop denied the charges.

Why preventing child abuse in schools needs change in approach

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday the reaction to decades-old allegations of sexual assault against his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh makes it "a very scary time" for young men in the United States.

His remarks came as he responded to questions about allegations against the conservative jurist by three women who say Kavanaugh drunkenly sexually abused or harassed them when they were students in the 1980s.

"It's a very scary time for young men in America, where you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of," Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House.

Trump said Kavanaugh -- who denies the allegations and is adamant he did not drink to the point of blacking out, despite enjoying beer in his younger years -- has been treated unfairly.

"My whole life, I've heard you're innocent until proven guilty. But now you're guilty until proven innocent," Trump said.

The FBI is conducting a Senate-requested probe into the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh, whom Trump described as "a great judge" who "has been very brutally treated."

Trump was more prudent however when asked about the outcome of the upcoming Senate vote on whether to approve Kavanaugh for the highest US court.

That "is going to depend on what comes back from the FBI," Trump said. "The FBI is working very hard and let's see what happens."

In an extraordinary Senate hearing on Thursday, Kavanaugh said the confirmation process had become a "national disgrace," adding that the accusations had "destroyed my family and my good name."

Senators, including Republican Jeff Flake, struck a deal the following day that gives the FBI one week to conduct an investigation and deliver a report.

'Very scary time' for young American men, says Trump

A one-time classmate of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee said Monday that Brett Kavanaugh was a habitual heavy drinker, challenging the judge's Senate testimony to the contrary. &nbsp;

The comments came days after the FBI opened a Senate-requested probe into allegations by three women that a drunken Kavanaugh sexually abused them or engaged in sexual misconduct while they were students in the 1980s.

"I can unequivocally say that in denying the possibility that he ever blacked out from drinking and in downplaying the degree and frequency of his drinking, Brett has not told the truth," Chad Ludington told reporters.

The North Carolina State University professor, who said he had contacted the FBI with his information, indicated in a statement Sunday that Kavanaugh was "belligerent and aggressive" when he drank.

Earlier, Trump had defended his pick but admitted that the appeals court judge has had a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/trump-says-kavanaugh-had-bit-difficulty-alcohol-168862">"bit of difficulty" with alcohol</a>.

In a White House press conference, the US president sought to excuse excessive drinking by teenagers, while going beyond Kavanaugh's own testimony on his past use of alcohol to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.

"I was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer," the president said.

"He's had a little bit of difficulty. He talked about things that happened when he drank. This is not a man that said... he was perfect with respect to alcohol."

He also questioned why investigators needed to examine the 53-year-old Kavanaugh's high school record.

"I think it's very unfair to bring up things like this," Trump said.

"I graduated from high school and while I did not drink, I saw a lot of people drinking," he said.

"They drink beer and go crazy and they were in high school... Does that mean that they can't do something they want to do in their life?" &nbsp;

He returned to the theme during a campaign rally in Tennessee, where he accused opposition Democrats of being motivated by politics.&nbsp;

"They have been blind in a blind rage ever since they lost the 2016. They have gone loco," he told supporters.

'I like beer'

In Thursday's extraordinary hearing, Kavanaugh vehemently denied the sexual abuse allegations, and also aggressively challenged suggestions he had a drinking problem at the time.

"I drank beer with my friends. Sometimes I had too many beers," he told the panel. &nbsp;

"Yes, we drank beer. I liked beer. I still like beer," he said.

"If every American who drinks beer or every American who drank beer in high school is suddenly presumed guilty of sexual assault, it will be an ugly, new place in this country."

The New York Times also reported that Kavanaugh was questioned but not charged by police after a 1985 bar fight in New Haven, Connecticut where he was accused of throwing ice on a fellow patron.&nbsp;

A witness said that a friend of Kavanaugh's then threw a glass that hit the same patron in the ear, causing bleeding.

US media meanwhile reported that the FBI had begun their interview of Mark Judge, Kavanaugh's former best friend and a key figure in the misconduct allegations leveled by Christine Blasey Ford.

Judge's interview started but "has not been completed," his attorney said in a statement quoted by Fox News.

In last week's hearing, Blasey Ford said Judge witnessed Kavanaugh's alleged assault and jumped on top of them as it happened, sending all three tumbling and allowing her to escape.

Clock ticking&nbsp;

Trump meanwhile said the White House would not restrict the new FBI probe, requested by senators before they take a final vote on Kavanaugh.

"I think the FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer," Trump said.

"I want it to be comprehensive... With that being said, I would like to go quickly," he added.

"We don't want to go on a witch hunt, do we?"

Senators, including Republican Jeff Flake, struck a deal Friday that gives the FBI one week to conduct its investigation and deliver its report.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate, made up of 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats, will be "voting this week" on advancing the Kavanaugh nomination, setting up a possible final confirmation vote this weekend or early next week.

"The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close," McConnell said.

Last week, Flake expressed eagerness to see Kavanaugh confirmed but said he wanted a "better process" for assessing the allegations. Flake said over the weekend that he would vote for Kavanaugh unless the FBI finds something in its investigation.

Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump and one of the most public faces of his administration, revealed on Sunday that she has been a victim of sexual assault.

Conway made the disclosure to CNN's Jake Tapper on his State of the Union news show, while defending Trump's embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

"I feel very empathetic, frankly, towards victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment and rape," she said, before pausing to clear her throat.

"I'm a victim of sexual assault. I don't expect Judge Kavanaugh, or Jake Tapper, or Jeff Flake, or anybody, to be held responsible for that. You have to be responsible for your own conduct," she added, visibly emotional.

Tapper, who appeared to have been caught off-guard, offered his sympathies.

"This is the first time I've ever heard you talk about something personal like that, and I'm sorry," he said.

"I've just had it," she replied.

Tapper then noted that Conway continues to work for President Trump, though numerous sexual misconduct allegations have been lodged against him.

But Conway, who had earlier in the interview argued that sexual assault was being used as a pretext to pursue political agendas, returned to the same theme.

"Don't always bring Trump into everything that happens in this universe. That's mistake number one."

Trump on Friday ordered a new FBI investigation into sexual assault allegations against his Supreme Court pick, as the Senate delayed a vote on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to make way for the probe.

The decision came a day after a dramatic hearing watched by more than 20 million people at which university professor Christine Blasey Ford accused the judge of pinning her down and assaulting her in the 1980s.

At least three women have now accused the 53-year-old conservative judge of sexual misconduct while drunk, both as a high school student and later at Yale University.

Republicans see Kavanaugh as pivotal to their gaining control of the nine-member Supreme Court bench.

Trump nominated him to replace Anthony Kennedy, who for years was a swing vote between four conservative and four liberal justices.

Kerala nun rape case: Bishop Franco Mulakkal arrested

US prosecutors have launched a probe to determine whether film star Sylvester Stallone should be charged in connection with a sexual assault reported last year, a spokesman said Wednesday.

"A case was presented today by the Santa Monica Police Department regarding Sylvester Stallone," Greg Risling, a spokesman at the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, told AFP.

"It is under review by our sex crime task force."

The case involves a woman who reported last November that the 71-year-old actor, best known for his roles in the "Rocky" and "Rambo" movies, had assaulted her in 1990.

Risling declined to provide more details about the alleged assault or to clarify whether California's 10-year statute of limitations applies in the case.

Police in Santa Monica and Stallone's attorney, Martin Singer, could also not be reached for comment.

The allegation against the star comes in the wake of the #MeToo movement that has focused attention on sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond.

Singer in December told US media when the allegation first surfaced that his client "categorically disputes the claim and it is apparent that the woman filed the report to get a media outlet to publish the story."

He acknowledged that Stallone had a relationship with the alleged victim while shooting a movie in Israel in 1987 while he was single.

The attorney said at the time that he planned to submit a claim against the woman for filing a false police report.

The #MeToo campaign took off last year following sexual assault allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. It has since become a worldwide phenomenon.

Hundreds of celebrities and powerful people, including actor Kevin Spacey and longtime broadcast journalist Charlie Rose, have been accused of sexual harassment in the wake of the Weinstein scandal.

Sylvester Stallone under probe for sexual assault

Hundreds of Chicago students have been sexually assaulted over the past decade after the third largest public school system in the US failed to implement basic safeguards like conducting adequate background checks or reporting abuse to authorities.&nbsp;

Since 2011, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) investigators have discovered "credible evidence of misconduct" in 230 reports of sexual abuse involving adults and students, according to Chicago Tribune, which carried out a wide-ranging investigative report entitled "Betrayed."&nbsp;

But the newspaper estimated the actual figure could be much higher because the CPS did so little to understand and tackle the problem.&nbsp;

The school system employed "ineffective background checks," the Tribune said, which failed to weed out employees with criminal convictions and arrests for sex crimes.&nbsp;

More than 370,000 students are enrolled in CPS, which employs nearly 36,000 people.

CPS chief Janice Jackson responded to the report by promising a "top-to-bottom review" of the school system's safety procedures, to be conducted by an independent lawyer.&nbsp;

"Like many parents this morning, I'm sick to my stomach," Jackson said on Twitter. "And like many parents, when I send my children to school, my expectation is that they are safe from harm."

A Tribune investigation identified 72 school employees who were alleged to have committed offences over the past decade. They included school deans, teachers, coaches, counsellors, security guards and others.&nbsp;

When students reported abuse, the results of internal probes were kept secret despite the state's mandated reporter law, and students often did not get the proper care they needed to deal with trauma, according to the newspaper.

Even in cases where school employees acted swiftly, they subjected young victims to repeated interrogations, inflicting additional psychological pain on the survivors.

The Tribune cited the case of a teacher hired in 2009 despite a prior prowling charge and a "window peeping" conviction at the home of a little girl.

In 2016, he was charged with unauthorized videotaping and one count of child pornography after he installed a motion-activated camera in a school bathroom.

In another case, a high school security guard was allowed to keep for years his job despite multiple convictions linked to groping.

Jackson said the district will work to "ensure that our hiring practices, background checks, training, and handling of sexual assault and misconduct allegations are the best policies and practices to protect our students."

Among the changes, the district outlined were better screenings of athletic staff and periodic background checks for all employees.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) investigators have discovered 'credible evidence of misconduct' in 230 reports of sexual abuse involving adults and students, according to Chicago Tribune

Hundreds of Chicago students have been sexually assaulted over the past decade after the third largest public school system in the US failed to implement basic safeguards like conducting adequate background checks or reporting abuse to authorities. Since 2011, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) investigators have discovered "credible evidence of misconduct" in 230 reports of sexual abuse involving adults and students, according to Chicago Tribune, which carried out a wide-ranging investigative report entitled "Betrayed." But the newspaper estimated the actual figure could be much higher because the CPS did so little to understand and tackle the problem. The school system employed "ineffective background checks," the Tribune said, which failed to weed out employees with criminal convictions and arrests for sex crimes. More than 370,000 students are enrolled in CPS, which employs nearly 36,000 people. CPS chief Janice Jackson responded to the report by promising a "top-to-bottom review" of the school system's safety procedures, to be conducted by an independent lawyer. "Like many parents this morning, I'm sick to my stomach," Jackson said on Twitter. "And like many parents, when I send my children to school, my expectation is that they are safe from harm." Hundreds abused in Chicago schools after systemic failures: Report

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expelled television’s Bill Cosby and Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski on Thursday as the Academy Awards presenter responded to sexual misconduct allegations roiling Hollywood.

Cosby and Polanski are the first known members expelled for violating a conduct code the Academy adopted in December following intense public pressure from hundreds of accusations of sexual harassment or assault in the entertainment industry.

The Academy said in a statement its Board of Governors met on Tuesday and voted to remove Cosby and Polanski, who had been members since 1996 and 1969, respectively.

“The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy’s values of respect for human dignity,” the body whose 8,000 members vote on the Oscars said in the statement.

The expulsion comes as the entertainment industry grapples with misconduct allegations that have led to dozens of politicians, businessmen and entertainers stepping down or being dropped from creative projects, sparking the #MeToo social movement and the Time’s Up campaign against workplace harassment and equal pay.

Cosby, 80, who was known as “America’s Dad” for his role on popular 1980s TV comedy “The Cosby Show,” was convicted last week of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. He faces up to 30 years in prison, and his attorney has vowed to appeal the conviction.

Polanski, 84, who won the best director Oscar in 2003 for “The Pianist,” in 1977 admitted to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles.

The French-Polish director lives in France and fled the United States following pleading guilty for fear his deal with prosecutors would be overruled and he would get a lengthy prison term. Polanski’s case is ongoing.

His attorney Harland Braun said Polanski was not given the chance to present his case before the Academy.

“It’s just shocking that the Academy would expel someone without a fair hearing,” Bruan said in a telephone interview.

In response, the Academy pointed to its conduct code, which says the board “retains its independent duty and authority ... to address and take action on any matter.”

The Academy declined to say if Cosby and Polanski’s convictions played a role in their expulsion.

Four Academy members are now known to have been expelled. Once powerful producer Harvey Weinstein was expelled in October after numerous women accused him of decades-long sexual misconduct. Weinstein, 66, has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.

Actor Carmine Caridi was expelled in 2004 for distributing copies of films that are sent to members.

Myanmar's military has assured the United Nations of "harsh" action against perpetrators of sexual violence, state media reported on Tuesday, as UN&nbspenvoys travelled to Rakhine State where the military conducted a widely criticised crackdown.

Nearly 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled from Rakhine State to Bangladesh to flee a military crackdown launched in August that the United Nations and others denounced as "a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Many of the refugees arriving in Bangladesh recounted incidents of killings and rape but Myanmar largely rejected those reports as well as the accusation of ethnic cleansing.

It said its forces were engaged in a legitimate security campaign in response to a string of Rohingya insurgents attacks on the security forces.

The Security Council envoys arrived in Myanmar on Monday after visiting refugee camps on the Bangladesh side of the border, and government leaders in Dhaka.

In Myanmar, they met separately with Myanmar government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and military Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing.

"Sexual violence (is) considered as despicable acts," the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper cited Min Aung Hlaing as telling the envoys.

The military was "taking harsh and stronger actions against such offenders", he said.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi, in her meeting with the envoys, pledged to investigate any credible accusations of abuse, said diplomats who attended.

During the nearly hour-long meeting, Suu Kyi, noted Myanmar's difficulties in transitioning to rule of law after decades of military dictatorship, said the diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Suu Kyi's civilian government has no control over the military.

Myanmar civilian government spokesman Zaw Htay was not immediately available for comment.

'Cooperation needed'

Tuesday is the final day of a four-day visit to the region by the UN&nbspSecurity Council team.

The Security Council asked Myanmar in November to ensure no "further excessive use of military force" and to allow "freedom of movement, equal access to basic services, and equal access to full citizenship for all".

Earlier on Monday, the council envoys met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who asked them to press Myanmar to take back "their citizens".

Hasina said the refugees should return "under UN&nbspsupervision where security and safety should be ensured".

Myanmar and Bangladesh agreed in January to complete the voluntary repatriation of the refugees within two years but differences between the two sides remain and implementation of the plan has been slow.

Suu Kyi's office also said in a statement that cooperation was needed from Bangladesh on the repatriation of refugees.

Buddhist-majority Myanmar has for years denied Rohingya citizenship, freedom of movement and access to basic services such as healthcare. Many in Myanmar regard Rohingya as illegal immigrants from mostly Muslim Bangladesh.

Myanmar military assures UN of 'harsh' action on sexual assault

Anti-Muslim violence and an outbreak of dengue fever in Sri Lanka have led the government to slash its target for tourist arrivals this year after a record 2017.

Tourism Promotion Minister John Amaratunga said on Tuesday that 2.5 million arrivals were expected, down from an earlier estimate of 3 million, generating revenue of $4 billion.&nbsp;

He said a case of sexual assault against Dutch tourists in April in the town of Mirissa had also harmed the country's image abroad, though he could not quantify the impact of the incident in terms of visitor numbers.&nbsp;

In March, the government declared week-long a state of emergency in the central district of Kandy after rioting in which mosques and Muslim homes and businesses were destroyed.

Travel warnings for dengue are still in effect for Sri Lanka after an outbreak of the mosquito-borne virus killed more than 300 people there last year.

"When these things happen our targets get shifted... but we are working hard to attract more tourists," Amaratunga said.

Tourism accounts for nearly 5 per cent of the $87 billion economy and is a key main foreign exchange earner, along with the garment and tea industries, and remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad.

Year on year, tourist arrivals rose 24.1 per cent in March and by 17.1 per cent in the first quarter, according to government data.

Arrivals hit a record high of 2.1 million in 2017, and revenue from tourism an all-time peak of $3.63 billion.

Reluctance to report a sexual assault to police immediately does not mean the victim is lying, as Indian women would rarely make such false allegations, the Bombay High Court has said, upholding the conviction of four men for gang-rape.

Justice AM Badar earlier this week dismissed the appeals of Dattatraya Korde, Ganesh Pardeshi, Pintu Khoskar and Ganesh Zole, who had challenged a sessions court order of April 2013 sentencing them to 10 years in jail for gang-rape.

They were convicted of gang-raping a woman and thrashing her male friend on March 15, 2012, when the two were returning from Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district. The convicts claimed that they were framed up as they had seen the victim and her friend in a compromising position and threatened to take them to police for indecent behaviour.

The appeals sought to highlight that while the woman claimed that the incident took place on March 15, she lodged the complaint two days later. A medical examination had ruled out a rape since there was no injury on the woman's body, the appellants said.

The high court, however, upheld the conviction and sentence, citing a Supreme Court's observation in a past case that "rarely will a girl or woman in India make false allegations of sexual assault". The victim, who comes from a conservative section of society and who is separated from her husband, must have been afraid of stigma and "reflection on her chastity", Justice Badar said.

"She had fear of being looked down upon by the society including her parents... Being overpowered by a feeling of shame on account of gang-rape, her non-approaching a police station immediately...Cannot be said to be abnormal and throwing doubt on her version," the judge said.

Because of her secret excursion with a male friend, she must have felt that she would be branded as promiscuous if the incident came to light, the high court said. "Minor discrepancies" such as delay in lodging the complaint does not weaken her case, the court said.

The judge also held that a mere absence of injuries do not lead to the conclusion that there was no sexual assault.&nbsp

Delay in lodging rape complaint doesn’t mean victim is lying: Bombay HC

A Delhi court has refused to restrain the media from reporting the alleged sexual harassment case against R K Pachauri, former Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), but asked the press to play a balanced role and shun sensationalism.

The court acknowledged the right of the public to know the developments in the case and asserted that any gag order would &quot;trample&quot; that right.

It said the earlier &#39;interim orders&#39; asking the media to report the high-profile case in a particular manner, as &quot;uncalled for&quot; and hence, stood &quot;vacated&quot;.

&quot;The injunction, as sought for, falls foul to the said explicit proposition of the law. Such restraints as sought for, not only amount to enforcing a gag order upon the media but at the same time prevents the right of the public to be kept updated about the developments &ndash; their right to know is infracted or trampled upon,&quot; Additional District Judge Sumit Dass, said.

The court also said that all reportage on the matter should carry Pachauri&#39;s or his representative&#39;s views as well.

&quot;In the event, if such views or comments are not given by them, then a statement as to the fact that an effort was made to ascertain their views should also be made in the news, articles or programmes, as the case may be,&quot; it said.

The court also directed the media houses to mention in their reports that &quot;the matter is still sub-judice or is still pending in the court or a final decision in the case is still awaited&quot;.

The court noted that while reporting sexual harassment matters, the media has to play a very balanced role, as such reports have wide repercussions, affect dignity and infract into the privacy of individuals besides having a bearing on the functioning and reputations of the institutions involved.

&quot;It won&#39;t be any misnomer or palpably wrong to say that it has the potential to make or mar a person&#39;s reputation and career. Thus, with such a wide encompassing power, a corresponding duty also lies upon the media to report such a matter in a neutral, impartial and objective manner.

&quot;However, there is no gainsaying that an endeavour is always made by media to somehow or the other to catch the eyeballs or the attention of the viewers/readers.

In the said race, many a time, the stories which are presented, contain exaggeration, sweeping statements are made, element of sensationalisation is inserted - a sort of jingoistic or aggressive narrative or undertone is adopted, same is done to create a hype or a buzz or even a sort of a hysteria around the news and sometimes even a sort of crusader approach is adopted while reporting of the news,&quot; it said.

The court said it was not merely that the media can make fair comment only in respect of public persons holding public office.

&quot;The plaintiff himself had stated that he is a recipient of various awards/well- decorated and also claims himself to be a leading luminary in his field having national and international stature. Thus, he has a public persona or is a public figure and has to be under public gaze,&quot; it said.

After registration of an FIR against him by a colleague in 2015, and with more women raising allegations in the months that followed, a civil suit was filed by Pachauri against some media houses in 2016.

Pachauri had filed the plea for injunction alleging defamation and sought damages amounting to Rs one crore against some media houses, one of the women who had complained against him and her lawyer.

A former teen model has accused illusionist David Copperfield of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 1988 after he judged a modelling competition in Japan that she took part in.

Copperfield, 61, said in statements on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday that he had been falsely accused of sexual misconduct in the past and was about to &quot;weather another storm.&quot;

Hours later, entertainment news website The Wrap published the allegations by Brittney Lewis, who said Copperfield invited her to one of his shows in California after meeting her at the September 1988 competition when he was 32 and she was 17.

It was during that trip that she was drugged and assaulted, The Wrap quoted Lewis as saying.

&quot;He was kissing my face and then I remember him starting to go down on my body with his face,&quot; the website quoted her as saying. &quot;I just completely blacked out.&quot;

The next morning, &quot;he wanted me to know that nothing happened because I was underage,&quot; Lewis was quoted as saying.

Reuters was unable to independently confirm the allegation. Lewis could not immediately be reached for comment.

A Copperfield spokeswoman, Staci Wolfe, declined to comment on Lewis&#39;s account.

&quot;As you know David made a statement about #MeToo on his social (media), but we are not going to comment about this story,&quot; Wolfe said in an email, referring to the #MeToo online movement by victims of sexual harassment or abuse.

Multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against male actors, filmmakers and agents have roiled Hollywood since October 2017, leading to many major players being fired, forced to step down, or dropped from creative projects. In the United States, the scandal has also engulfed men in politics, business and the workplace, inspiring the #MeToo movement.

Copperfield was accused in 2007 of sexual assault by former beauty queen Lacey Carroll, but the case was eventually dropped with no official explanation.

In his online statements praising the #MeToo movement, Copperfield asked the public to reserve judgement when someone is accused of sexual misconduct.

&quot;Imagine what it&#39;s like, believing in the movement, and having also been falsely accused publicly in the past,&quot; Copperfield wrote on Instagram. &quot;While I weather another storm, I want the movement to continue to flourish. Always listen, and consider everything carefully, but please for everyone&#39;s sake don&#39;t rush to judgement.&quot;

Copperfield, whose real name is David Kotkin, is famed for illusions including making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China.

Copperfield, 61, said in statements on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday that he had been falsely accused of sexual misconduct in the past and was about to "weather another storm." Hours later, entertainment news website The Wrap published the allegations by Brittney Lewis, who said Copperfield invited her to one of his shows in California after meeting her at the September 1988 competition when he was 32 and she was 17. It was during that trip that she was drugged and assaulted, The Wrap quoted Lewis as saying. "He was kissing my face and then I remember him starting to go down on my body with his face," the website quoted her as saying. "I just completely blacked out." The next morning, "he wanted me to know that nothing happened because I was underage," Lewis was quoted as saying. Reuters was unable to independently confirm the allegation. Lewis could not immediately be reached for comment. A Copperfield spokeswoman, Staci Wolfe, declined to comment on Lewis's account. "As you know David made a statement about #MeToo on his social (media), but we are not going to comment about this story," Wolfe said in an email, referring to the #MeToo online movement by victims of sexual harassment or abuse. "Imagine what it's like, believing in the movement, and having also been falsely accused publicly in the past," Copperfield wrote on Instagram. "While I weather another storm, I want the movement to continue to flourish. Always listen, and consider everything carefully, but please for everyone's sake don't rush to judgement." Copperfield, whose real name is David Kotkin, is famed for illusions including making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China.

Halsey&rsquo;s poem in full:

It&rsquo;s 2009 and I&rsquo;m 14 and I&rsquo;m crying

Not really sure where I am but I&rsquo;m holding the hand of my best friend Sam

In the waiting room of a Planned Parenthood

The air is sterile and clean, and the walls are that not grey, but green

And the lights are so bright they could burn a whole through the seam of my jeans

My phone is buzzing in the pocket

My mom is asking me if I remembered my keys &lsquo;cause she&rsquo;s closing the door and she needs to lock it

But I can&rsquo;t tell my mom where I&rsquo;ve gone

I can&rsquo;t tell anyone at all

You see, my best friend Sam was raped by a man that we knew &lsquo;cause he worked in the after-school program

And he held her down with her textbook beside her

And he covered her mouth and he came inside her

So now I&rsquo;m with Sam, at the place with a plan, waiting for the results of a medical exam

And she&rsquo;s praying she doesn&rsquo;t need an abortion, she couldn&rsquo;t afford it

And her parents would, like, totally kill her

It&rsquo;s 2002 and my family just moved and the only people I know are my mom&rsquo;s friends, too, and her son

He&rsquo;s got a case of Matchbox cars and he says that he&rsquo;ll teach me to play the guitar if I just keep quiet

And the stairwell beside apartment 1245 will haunt me in my sleep for as long as I am alive

And I&rsquo;m too young to know why it aches in my thighs, but I must lie, I must lie

It&rsquo;s 2012 and I&rsquo;m dating a guy and I sleep in his bed and I just learned how to drive

And he&rsquo;s older than me and he drinks whiskey neat and he&rsquo;s paying for everything

This adult thing is not cheap

We&rsquo;ve been fighting a lot, almost 10 times a week

And he wants to have sex, and I just want to sleep

He says I can&rsquo;t say no to him

This much I owe to him

He buys my dinner, so I have to b**w him

He&rsquo;s taken to forcing me down on my knees

And I&rsquo;m confused &lsquo;cause he&rsquo;s hurting me while he says please

And he&rsquo;s only a man, and these things he just needs

He&rsquo;s my boyfriend, so why am I filled with unease?

It&rsquo;s 2017 and I live like a queen

And I&rsquo;ve followed damn near every one of my dreams

I&rsquo;m invincible and I&rsquo;m so f**king naive

I believe I&rsquo;m protected &lsquo;cause I live on a screen

Nobody would dare act that way around me

I&rsquo;ve earned my protection, eternally clean

Until a man that I trust gets his hands in my pants

But I don&rsquo;t want none of that, I just wanted to dance

And I wake up the next morning like I&rsquo;m in a trance and there&rsquo;s blood

Is that my blood?

Hold on a minute

You see I&rsquo;ve worked every day since I was 18

I&rsquo;ve toured everywhere from Japan to Mar-a-Lago

I even went on stage that night in Chicago when I was having a miscarriage

I mean, I pied the piper, I put on a diaper

And sang out my spleen to a room full of teens

What do you mean this happened to me?

You can&rsquo;t put your hands on me

You don&rsquo;t know what my body has been through

I&rsquo;m supposed to be safe now

I earned it

It&rsquo;s 2018 and I&rsquo;ve realised nobody is safe long as she is alive

And every friend that I know has a story like mine

And the world tells me we should take it as a compliment

But then heroes like Ashley and Simone and Gabby, McKayla and Gaga, Rosario, Aly

Remind me this is the beginning, it is not the finale

And that&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;re here

And that&rsquo;s why we rally

It&rsquo;s Olympians and a medical resident and not one fucking word from the man who is President

It&rsquo;s about closed doors and secrets and legs and stilletos from the Hollywood hills to the projects in ghettos

When babies are ripped from the arms of teen mothers and child brides cry globally under the covers

Who don&rsquo;t have a voice on the magazine covers

They tell us take cover

But we are not free until all of us are free

So love your neighbour, please treat her kindly

Ask her story and then shut up and listen

Black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian

Listen, listen and then yell at the top of your lungs

Be a voice for all those who have prisoner tongues

For the people who had to grow up way too young

There is work to be done

There are songs to be sung

Lord knows there&rsquo;s a war to be won

US singer Halsey's sexual assault poem at Women's March stuns the world

The number of women and girls now known to have been abused by Larry Nassar has risen to 265, a Michigan judge told a final sentencing hearing Wednesday where the former USA Gymnastics doctor faced his accusers once again.

At least 65 of Nassar&#39;s victims were to speak out over several days at the last of three sentencing hearings for the disgraced doctor who molested his patients for two decades under the guise of medical treatment.

The 54-year-old Nassar was sentenced last week to 40 to 175 years for molesting girls at his Michigan State University (MSU) clinic, in addition to a prior sentence of 60 years for possessing child pornography.&nbsp;

The poignant accounts of abuse suffered by more than 150 young women and girls, who took the stand over the past two weeks, have had profound repercussions for the US sporting world, with resignations, retirements and new investigations announced at a rapid pace.

Under pressure, the entire board of USA Gymnastics has stepped down as of Wednesday.

As the final hearings got under way, star gymnast Simone Biles slammed the US Olympic Committee for failing to reach out to her after she revealed this month she had been molested by Nassar.&nbsp;

She revealed she was initially in denial -- and broke down when she realized she had been abused.&nbsp;

&quot;I remember just bawling my eyes out,&quot; the four-time Olympic gold medal winner told NBC News. &quot;It feels like he took a part of me that I can&#39;t get back.&quot;

Biles, along with fellow gold-medalists Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney, have all identified themselves as Nassar victims, along with scores of female athletes in gymnastics and others who sought medical treatment at Michigan State. &nbsp;

Criminal of the worst kind

The small courtroom in Charlotte, Michigan filled up early in the morning, long before Nassar was brought in for hearings that were expected stretch into early next week.

&quot;We have over 265 identified victims and an infinite number of victims in the state, in the country, and all over the world,&quot; Judge Janice Cunningham said.&nbsp;

&quot;As a result, by allowing live streaming and tweeting, all individuals are able to participate in this process.&quot;&nbsp;

Jessica Thomashow, 17, who had also testified at Nassar&#39;s previous sentencing hearing, urged the judge to impose the maximum allowable sentence.&nbsp;

&quot;Larry Nassar is evil,&quot; she said. &quot;Larry Nassar is a criminal of the worst kind.&quot;&nbsp;

Under a plea agreement, Nassar could get a minimum 25 to 40 years in prison, in addition to his prior sentences.&nbsp;

Best friends

Gymnast Madison Bonofiglio testified against Larry Nassar in March 2017, when molestation charges were initially brought. She said she knew of at least 10 other victims who have not come forward.&nbsp;

&quot;This really makes me sad that some of my best friends think because they were only assaulted by Nassar five to 10 times, that it doesn&#39;t matter,&quot; she said.&nbsp;

The latest hearing relates to abuse that took place at the Twistars gymnastics training facility. Approximately 30 statements were read Wednesday, and another 35 expected when court resumes Friday.&nbsp;

The victims&#39; courtroom revelations have sent shockwaves through the sport.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered an investigation of the Karolyi Ranch -- until recently the training ground for America&#39;s top gymnasts, where victims said they were abused. &nbsp;

USA Gymnastics severed ties with the ranch and three board members resigned, but that failed to quell the furor. The US Olympics Committee demanded all USA Gymnastics board members resign, and they complied Wednesday.

&quot;USA Gymnastics embraces not only the changes necessary,&quot; it said in a statement, &quot;but we also will hold the organization to the highest standards of care and safety.&quot;

US lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bipartisan bill mandating reporting of all sexual assault allegations in amateur sports.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the fallout from the Nassar case may yet grow, with the US Olympic Committee, MSU and USA Gymnastics all facing investigations in what victims see as a belated push to establish who knew about Nassar&#39;s conduct, and what could have been done to stop him.&nbsp;

USA Gymnastics doctor abused at least 265 women and girls, court told

Dame Helen Mirren says men used to &quot;expose&quot; themselves to her once a week in her 20s.

The &quot;Queen&quot; star insists she has never experienced sexual harassment in Hollywood but was subjected to it regularly in her younger years.

Speaking in a preview clip of her Today interview with Willie Geist, which airs in full on January 21, she said: &quot;I had never experienced that ... in Hollywood. Because I came to Hollywood, I was in my 30s. I was too old. It doesn&#39;t happen to you unless you&#39;re very young.

&quot;When I was in between 16 and 23, 24 - men would expose themselves to me often, I would say about once a week ... on the subway, on the tube, on the bus, walking down a road and it was like, &#39;Ugh.&#39;&quot;

Helen previously revealed she &quot;wishes she had told people to f**k off more&quot; when she was younger.

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, the 72-year-old actress shared: &quot;It&#39;d be to say &#39;F**k off&#39; more and stop being so bloody polite... In those days, you had to. It&#39;s hard to explain how difficult it is to overcome the culture. You become a voice in the wilderness. No one wants to listen.&quot;

And Helen Mirren believes things have &quot;changed substantially&quot; for women in the film and television industry in the last decade.

She said: &quot;Hugely. In the last 10 years - or really the last three or four years - things have changed substantially. There is a pressure mounting behind a dam, and I hope that that dam is finally bursting in terms of women directors and women-led dramas. When I first did &#39;Prime Suspect&#39; they were not at all sure that a female-led drama would be acceptable to the public. So that&#39;s how much things have changed since we first began &#39;Prime Suspect&#39;. It&#39;s changed hugely.&quot;

Victims of disgraced former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar confronted him at a sentencing hearing on Tuesday with gut-wrenching emotional accounts of the trauma and scars stemming from his sexual abuse.

Nassar, 54, has pleaded guilty to a total of 10 counts of criminal sexual conduct in two counties in Michigan and could face life in prison.

His best-known victims of sexual abuse under the guise of medical treatment were members of the Olympic gold-medal winning gymnastics team including stars such as Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas.

But Tuesday&#39;s hearing revealed the extent of his crimes: more than 100 victims have come forward, including his onetime family babysitter and athletes in several women&#39;s sports programs at Michigan State University, where he worked.

&quot;You used my body for six years for your own sexual gratification,&quot; Kyle Stephens, Nassar&#39;s former babysitter, told a hushed Lansing, Michigan, courtroom. &quot;That is unforgivable.&quot;

Addressing the slight, bespectacled Nassar directly, Stephens said: &quot;Little girls don&#39;t stay little forever.

&quot;They grow into strong women that return to destroy your world.&quot;

Former gymnast Alexis Moore said: &quot;He betrayed my trust, took advantage of my youth and sexually abused me hundreds of times.&quot;

&quot;Are you remorseful for your actions and all the lives you have changed forever?&quot; Moore asked the former doctor in court.

Simone Biles reveals abuse

According to the Michigan Attorney General&#39;s Office, nearly 100 women and girls are expected to deliver victim impact statements at the hearing, which could last several days.

Nassar already faces 60 years in prison after being convicted of child pornography charges.

The sentencing hearing began a day after <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/i-was-sexually-abused-by-larry-nassar-says-us-gymnast-simone-biles-29660" target="_blank">Biles, the 20-year-old reigning Olympic all-around champion, revealed that she was among those sexually abused</a> by Nassar.

&quot;I too am one of the many survivors that were sexually abused by Larry Nassar,&quot; the 10-time World Championship medallist said on Twitter.

Nassar&#39;s case forced the resignation last year of USA Gymnastics chief Steve Penny, who was accused of failing to quickly notify authorities about abuse allegations.

USA Gymnastics adopted a new &quot;safe sports policy&quot; in response to the Nassar scandal that requires &quot;mandatory reporting&quot; of suspicions of sexual abuse.

International Gymnastics Federation president Morinari Watanabe told AFP on Tuesday that his governing body will set up a victim support body.

&quot;The welfare and safeguarding of children and young athletes is fundamental to our sport,&quot; Watanabe said. &quot;We will not tolerate any abuse or sexual harassment in the gymnastics community.&quot;

A civil lawsuit has been filed on behalf of about 100 of Nassar&#39;s victims. Their attorney, John Manly, has said the total number could be as high as 160.

&#39;Stole my innocence&#39;

Dressed in blue prison garb, Nassar spent most of the time looking down as the women and girls spoke, occasionally holding his head in his handcuffed hands or wiping away tears.

Some victims chose to be identified and testify publicly while others spoke anonymously.

Another former gymnast, Jade Capua, said the abuse by Nassar was a &quot;life-changing experience that stole my innocence far too young.&quot;

&quot;I&#39;m really proud of you,&quot; Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Capua after her remarks.

&quot;Your scar turned into a powerful voice,&quot; Aquilina said. &quot;Thank you for your bravery.&quot;

Olivia Cowan, who now has two daughters of her own, said she suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and is afraid to send her children to birthday parties or sleepovers.

&quot;If you can&#39;t trust a world-renowned doctor, who in this world can you trust?&quot; Cowan said through tears.

Stephens said she believed her father&#39;s 2016 suicide was brought about in part by his one-time defence of Nassar, who had been a family friend.

&quot;You convinced my parents that I was a liar,&quot; she said.

&quot;Admittedly my father was experiencing debilitating health issues but had he not had to bear the shame and self-loathing that stemmed from his defence of Larry Nassar, I believe he would have had a fighting chance for his life,&quot; Stephens said.

Among those who testified was Donna Markham, the mother of former gymnast Chelsea Markham, who was abused by Nassar from the age of 10.

A tearful Markham said her daughter quit gymnastics when she was 13, suffered from depression and took her own life in 2009.

US gymnast Simone Biles revealed she was sexually abused by former USA team doctor Larry Nassar, he is also accused of sexually assaulting more than 100 young girls including several US Olympians

Victims of disgraced former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar confronted him at a sentencing hearing on Tuesday with gut-wrenching emotional accounts of the trauma and scars stemming from his sexual abuse. Nassar, 54, has pleaded guilty to a total of 10 counts of criminal sexual conduct in two counties in Michigan and could face life in prison. His best-known victims of sexual abuse under the guise of medical treatment were members of the Olympic gold-medal winning gymnastics team including stars such as Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas. But Tuesday's hearing revealed the extent of his crimes: more than 100 victims have come forward, including his onetime family babysitter and athletes in several women's sports programs at Michigan State University, where he worked. "You used my body for six years for your own sexual gratification," Kyle Stephens, Nassar's former babysitter, told a hushed Lansing, Michigan, courtroom. "That is unforgivable." Addressing the slight, bespectacled Nassar directly, Stephens said: "Little girls don't stay little forever. "They grow into strong women that return to destroy your world." Former gymnast Alexis Moore said: "He betrayed my trust, took advantage of my youth and sexually abused me hundreds of times." "Are you remorseful for your actions and all the lives you have changed forever?" Moore asked the former doctor in court. Simone Biles reveals abuse According to the Michigan Attorney General's Office, nearly 100 women and girls are expected to deliver victim impact statements at the hearing, which could last several days. Nassar already faces 60 years in prison after being convicted of child pornography charges. The sentencing hearing began a day after Biles, the 20-year-old reigning Olympic all-around champion, revealed that she was among those sexually abused by Nassar. "I too am one of the many survivors that were sexually abused by Larry Nassar," the 10-time World Championship medallist said on Twitter. The single-member Peshawar High Court bench has directed that DNA tests will now be mandatory on the suspect as well as the alleged victim in sexual assault cases.&nbsp;

Justice Roohul Amin Khan Chamkani ruled that under that Section 164-B of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which was inserted in the law by Criminal Law Act 2016, DNA samples of the rapist and the victim will be collected and sent for examination as soon as possible.&nbsp;

The bench further observed, &quot;It further provides that the DNA samples collected shall be sent at earliest for the purpose of the investigation to a Forensic Laboratory, where the same shall be properly examined and preserved.&quot;

ENGLISH FOOTBALL&nbsp;

English sport has been rocked by a wave of allegations of sex abuse, mostly affecting football.

According to figures released in July by the National Police Chiefs Council, 741 victims have come forward to detail allegations against some 276 figures according to information obtained in Britain&#39;s inquiry into child sexual abuse named Operation Hydrant.

Football is at the centre of the investigation, with some 328 clubs from Premier League to the amateur level being investigated.

Several ex-professional players have come forward publicly to allege abuse at the hands of youth coaches after Andy Woodward revealed last November he was abused by a convicted child molester at Crewe Alexandra.

English football&#39;s governing body, the Football Association (FA), is also carrying out an independent review into its handling of abuse allegations in the years before 2005.

Although football is the main focus of the British probe, other sports have been implicated in 27 referrals.

These include basketball, rugby, gymnastics, martial arts, tennis, wrestling, golf, sailing, athletics, cricket, and swimming.

USA SWIMMING&nbsp;

&nbsp;USA Swimming was engulfed in scandal in 2010 when a television news investigation revealed myriad cases of sexual misconduct of various forms by coaches.

Cases uncovered included Andy King, a coach who was sentenced to 40 years in prison after authorities discovered a pattern of sexual abuse that stretched over three decades at clubs up and down the West Coast and involved more than a dozen teenaged female victims -- one of whom said she had an abortion after he got her pregnant when she was 14.

Another case involved a coach who installed a secret camera to film young women swimmers showering.

While more than 100 coaches were eventually banned for life from working for USA Swimming-affiliated clubs, the federation was blasted for an inadequate response to complaints that in some cases allowed coaches to evade their accusers and authorities, moving to new cities and gaining coaching jobs at new clubs where they continued the predatory behavior.

King, who was sentenced in 2010, had passed a USA Swimming background screening in 2008.

PENN STATE SCANDAL&nbsp;

The world of college American football was rocked in 2011 when Pennsylvania State University assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was indicted on dozens of counts of child molestation.

Sandusky, who coached one of America&#39;s most illustrious college football teams, recruited his young victims through a charity he founded for troubled youths.

The case scandalized the United States and tarnished the legacy of the university.

It led to the sacking of Penn State&#39;s legendary head coach Joe Paterno, a national icon, just weeks before his unexpected death from lung cancer in January 2012 at the age of 85.

Paterno was fired for failing to notify authorities when he was told Sandusky had been seen molesting a boy in the shower. The university&#39;s president, Graham Spanier, was also sacked.

Sandusky was given a 30 to 60 year prison sentence after being convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of abuse relating to 10 boys.

Penn State later paid out $60 million in settlements to 26 victims abused by Sandusky. Although his crimes related to a period between 1994 and 2009, prosecutors suspect his abuse may have begun in the 1970s.
