Over 300 million children worldwide fall victim to online sexual exploitation and abuse each year, research suggests.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that 12.6 per cent&nbsp;of the world's children have been victims of nonconsensual communication, sharing, and exposure to sexual images and videos over the past year, equating to approximately 302 million young people.

Around 12.5 per cent&nbsp;had been subject to online solicitation, such as unnecessary sexual talk that can include sexting, sexual questions and sexual act requests by adults or other youths.

The research also suggested that the US is a particularly high-risk area. The University of Edinburgh's Childlight initiative, which aims to understand the prevalence of child abuse, includes a new global index revealing that one in nine men in the US—equivalent to nearly 14 million—have admitted to online offences against children at some point.

The surveys further found that 7 per cent&nbsp;of British men, equivalent to 1.8 million, admitted the same.

The chief executive of Childlight, Paul Stanfield, said, “This is surprising that UK alone equates to forming a line of male offenders that could stretch all the way from Glasgow to London – or filling Wembley Stadium 20 times over."

“Child abuse material is so widespread that files are on average reported to watchdog and policing organisations once every second. This is a global health pandemic that has stayed hidden for far too long. It happens in every country, it’s growing exponentially, and it requires a global response,” Stanfield added.&nbsp;

“An urgent action needs to be taken and treat it as a public health issue that can be prevented. Children can’t wait.”

Former Karnataka chief minister and JD (S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesday (May 7) claimed that the alleged explicit videos of Prajwal Revanna were circulated by police officers intentionally.

Explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal were circulated in Hassan ahead of elections in the south Indian state, following which the state government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the sexual abuse allegations against the sitting member of parliament who had reportedly fled to Germany.

Addressing the press conference, Kumaraswamy said, "I'm addressing this PC over a dirty incident which shouldn't have happened. On 21st of April, a pen drive was circulated throughout the state intentionally and it was done by the police officers."

"They circulated it in Bengaluru Rural, Mandya, and also in Hassan intentionally,” said Kumaraswamy, who is also the uncle of Revanna and the son of former Indian prime minister HD Deve Gowda.&nbsp;

Kumaraswamy said Prajwal Revanna's election agent Poornachandra filed a complaint with the Hassan DC and Police on 22nd April.&nbsp;

"On 21st April, a person called Naveen Gowda tweeted to watch Prajwal Revanna's videos. I am not defending anyone or anything in those videos. Punishment must be given. There is no question of protecting anyone, irrespective of who they are," he said.&nbsp;

The former chief minister further informed that a complaint against Naveen Gowda, Karthik Gowda, Chetan and Putti/Purtaraju was filed but no action was taken against any of them.&nbsp;

“FIR was filed on 21st April. On 26th April, [election] returning officer replied and closed the complaint...no action has been taken by the police or election returning officer till now. Who shared the videos and pen drive?" 
 
Meanwhile,&nbsp;BJP leader G Devaraje Gowda, a whistleblower in&nbsp;Revanna's sexual abuse row, said that the special investigation team (SIT) is forcing him to rule out his allegations against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is from Congress party, from his testimony.

“I do not trust this SIT. There's no transparency in the probe. This case must be handed over to the CBI," Gowda said.&nbsp;

During a news conference, Gowda shared a purported excerpt from an April 29 phone call in which Shivakumar discusses the Prajwal case with him.&nbsp;

Gowda also played pieces of alleged phone calls made to him by former MP LR Shivarame Gowda asking him not to name Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or Shivakumar in the case.

Gowda further claimed that women are being paid to lodge complaints in the case.

It is worth mentioning that on Sunday (May 5), the Karnataka government said a Blue Corner Notice had been issued against Prajwal Revanna, who is facing sexual abuse allegations.

A Kerala court on Monday sentenced a 44-year-old man to a cumulative 106 years' imprisonment for raping and impregnating a 15-year-old mentally challenged girl in this mountainous district of the state.

Devikulam Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) Judge Sirajuddin P A handed down varying sentences to the man, who was a friend of the victim's mother, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for a total of 106 years, Special Public Prosecutor Smiju K Das said.

However, as the sentences will be served concurrently and the highest of the jail terms given to the man is 22 years, he will be serving 22 years in prison.

The court also imposed a fine of&nbsp;₹&nbsp;60,000 on the man. If the convict does not pay the fine amount, he will have to undergo an additional 22 months of rigorous imprisonment.

The court ordered that if the accused pays the fine, the amount should be paid to the girl as compensation from the victim compensation scheme of the Idukki District Legal Services Authority.

The incident took place in 2022 when the accused, a native of Thrissur, had come to Adimali for work. He had been working together with the girl's mother in a hotel and, after becoming friendly with her, he stayed with them in their house.

Then, when the girl's mother and siblings were not at home, the accused began sexually exploiting the girl. He had also threatened the girl, saying that he would kill her if she disclosed the incidents to them.

The incidents came to light when the mother brought the girl to Adimali Taluk Hospital due to physical difficulties, and the doctor found out that the girl was pregnant. The doctor reported the incident to the police.

The pregnancy of the girl was aborted at Idukki Medical College Hospital.

Subsequently, DNA tests were conducted on the medical samples of the aborted foetus of the girl and the accused, revealing that the father of the unborn child of the girl was the accused.&nbsp;

The group, Terre des Femmes, has installed their placards behind iconic statues of women, which are an important part of humanity's cultural history: the Juliet Capulet statue in Munich's Marienplatz; the "Youth" statue in Bremen's Hoetgerhof; and in front of the "Frau Rhein" statue that is part of the Neptune fountain in central Berlin.

The group has also posted QR codes through which the statues themselves can tell their stories in audio form.

After facing spine pain Kristin Fritz sought help from a rheumatologist recommended by her doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, a decade ago.

During her appointments with Dr. Derrick Todd, Fritz initially experienced a normal consultation process. However, as the session progressed, she recounted feeling uncomfortable as Todd aggressively groped her breasts, suggesting he took pleasure in the act.

It wasn't until last year, when contacted by the hospital regarding Todd, that she understood the violation. She later discovered she was not alone.

“I feel so dishonored,” she told The Associated Press. “I feel so ashamed of myself for not knowing better in the moment to do anything and to be like, yeah, this did feel wrong and I should tell somebody.”

It is worth mentioning that she is one of more than 200 women and several men who have joined a consolidated lawsuit against Todd in Massachusetts’ Suffolk Superior Court.

The lawsuit, which combines multiple filings from the previous year, accuses Todd of subjecting patients to unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations, and rectal examinations.

The lawsuit alleges that Todd, a former rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital specialising in treating inflammatory conditions of muscles, joints, and bones, began abusing patients in 2010. Julie Morris was locked up in December 2021 after admitting to 18 sex offences unrelated to her job as the 'safeguarding lead' at St George’s Central Primary School in Tyldesley, near Wigan.

Her partner, David Morris, a mechanic, was jailed for 16 years, with an additional four-year extended licence period, for a total of 34 offences. These include seven counts of rape and 13 counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Andrew Menary, while sentencing the pair, had expressed shock, stating: "Every now and again you see cases, the circumstances of which are almost beyond belief."

"This is one of those cases. It demonstrates that human depravity really knows no depths."

Following this, her case was transferred to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), which deals with cases of misconduct.

A three-person panel of the TRA concluded that the former teacher's actions were "fundamentally incompatible with her being a teacher."

"Her conduct ran counter to what should be at the very core of the practice of a teacher with a duty of care towards children," stated a report detailing the panel's findings.

The panel was of the opinion that Morris' actions in committing the rape and abuse "would undoubtedly affect public confidence in the teaching profession, particularly given the influence that teachers may have on pupils, parents, and others in the community".

It added that the fact she was also the safeguarding lead at the school "makes her offending all the more shocking in that, whilst the designated point of contact for welfare and safety concerns at the School, she herself was engaged in abusing a child, albeit not one at the school."

The panel also found that Morris' offences were "deliberate and sustained" and were not committed "under duress".

Concluding that there was a "real risk" of Morris repeating her offences, they banned her from teaching indefinitely on February 27.

This, as per the report, means that the now 46-year-old is barred from teaching in schools, sixth-form colleges, youth accommodations or children’s homes.

As per The Guardian, this report has been compiled by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA). It is largely based on interviews of Palestinian detainees who have been released at the Kerem Shalom crossing point since December.

Indian Supreme Court on Monday (Feb 19) rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a court-monitored probe by government agencies into the violence in Sandeshkhali village in West Bengal state.&nbsp;

India's top court said that the incident that happened in Sandeshkhali could not be compared to the violence in northern eastern state of Manipur. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih said that the Calcutta High Court is already seized of the matter.&nbsp;

The bench said: "The local high court will be the best to assess the situation. Let there be no dual forums." The bench also granted the PIL petitioner the liberty to approach the high court.&nbsp;

This development comes amid reports that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari apparently said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the region.&nbsp;

As per reports, Adhikari was granted permission by the Calcutta High Court to visit Sandehkhali. He is expected to visit the gram panchayat in Sandeshkhali Block-II on Tuesday, as directed by Justice Kaushik Chanda.&nbsp;

Sandeshkhali violence: India's top court rejects PIL seeking court-monitored probe

A South Korean pastor who for decades was hailed as hero for helping North Koreans escape the country has been handed jail sentence for sexually abusing minors. Chun Ki-won (67), founder of the NGO Durihana in South Korean capital Seoul has been helping people escape the hardline rule in North Korea for decades through routes in China. But now, a court in South Korea has found him guilty of sexually harassing minors at the school he founded at his NGO.

"The victims are making consistent statements and it includes content that cannot be stated without first-hand experience of the circumstances", said Judge Seung-jeong Kim of the Seoul Central District Court, as reported by BBC.

The judge noted that Chun committed the crime from a position of influence he had on account of rescue of these minors.

Chun, who faces allegations of molesting six North Korean teenagers, was arrested in September. He had denied sexual assault charges but the court held him guilty.

The United Kingdom has announced a new crackdown on "cowards" who kill their partners through "rough sex".On Valentine's Day, (Wednesday, Feb 14th) the UK government announced that a new statutory aggravating factor will be brought in" for this.

As per a statement on the UK Government website, "abusive, degrading or dangerous sexual behaviour" that causes death constitutes&nbsp;'rough sex'.

"Cowards who kill their partners with sexual violence will face longer behind bars as the government continues to clamp down on domestic abuse against women," said the statement.

Under the new legislation, offenders will be handed down tougher sentences than ever.&nbsp;

As per The Guardian, this follows the UK government's abolition of rough sex as a defence under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. This was done after lawyers in a series of high-profile cases took help of the act to&nbsp;secure lesser sentences for their clients.

Building on the act, the measure seeks to clarify that in law, there is no such thing as the "rough sex defence".&nbsp;

Of the 60 homicides,&nbsp;a whopping 45 per cent of offenders, using the "rough sex" defence,&nbsp;got away with "prosecution for manslaughter, a lesser sentence, or the death not prosecuted as a crime at all."

"This change should ensure that any future perpetrators of violence of this sort are properly punished, and send a clear message that this violence against women is unacceptable in our society," she added.

Over 90 per cent of child sexual abuse material present on the internet is now "self-generated" content, extorted from children victims,&nbsp;as young as three, according to a new report by an internet watchdog.&nbsp;

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) said it unearthed&nbsp;self-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on more than 275,655 websites in 2023, which was an increase of eight per cent from the previous year.&nbsp;

Out of these websites,&nbsp;254,070, or 92 per cent, contained "self-generated" images or videos, with children under the age of 10 featuring on more than&nbsp;100,000 websites which was an increase of 66 per cent on the year before. Kids between the ages&nbsp;of three and six were found on 2,500 of them.&nbsp;

Around, one in five websites contained Category A child abuse content - regarded as the most severe form of it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It does mean we’re detecting more, but I don’t think it’s ever a good thing if you’re finding loads more child sexual abuse,” said the watchdog's chief executive Susie Hargreaves.&nbsp;

“Obviously the IWF would be most successful if we didn’t find any images of child sexual abuse. Our mission is the elimination of child sexual abuse – it’s not just to find as much as possible and take it down.”

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) said it unearthed self-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on more than 275,655 websites in 2023, which was an increase of eight per cent from the previous year. Out of these websites, 254,070, or 92 per cent, contained "self-generated" images or videos, with children under the age of 10 featuring on more than 100,000 websites which was an increase of 66 per cent on the year before. Kids between the ages of three and six were found on 2,500 of them. Around, one in five websites contained Category A child abuse content - regarded as the most severe form of it. “It does mean we’re detecting more, but I don’t think it’s ever a good thing if you’re finding loads more child sexual abuse,” said the watchdog's chief executive Susie Hargreaves. “Obviously the IWF would be most successful if we didn’t find any images of child sexual abuse. A new report on sexual abuse against children in the UK has revealed some shocking details. It says most of these crimes are being committed by children themselves. Molly Gambhir reports.

The data collected from 42 police forces in England and Wales showed that around 106,984 child sexual abuse offences were reported in 2022, which is an increase of 7.6 per cent from the previous year and more than five times the 20,000 cases recorded in 2013. 
 
In the landmark report, it was found that in 52 per cent of these cases, a child&nbsp;between the age of 10 to 17&nbsp;was involved as a suspect or perpetrator, which is up from a third in 2013.

As per the researchers, a four-year-old child, who had uploaded a sibling's indecent image to the internet through a smartphone, was the youngest child to have been reported by the police.

Till now, the police registered reports of 14,800 rapes and sexual assaults against children, between the age of 10 to 17, where the police had classed the suspect as a child and the overwhelming majority were boys. 
 
Speaking to The Guardian, NPCC lead for child protection Ian Critchley said: “This is predominantly a gender-based crime of boys committing offences against girls.”

“I think that is being exacerbated by the accessibility of violent pornography and the ease with which violent pornography is accessible to boys and, therefore, a perception that is [normal] behaviour, and that person can carry out that behaviour that they are seeing online in the most violent way against other peers as well,” he added. 
 
“Clearly the accessibility to smartphones has just rocketed, not just in relation to 11- to 16-year-olds, but in relation to under-10s as well. That accessibility has really exacerbated that and I think this is a debate that does need to be had in our society,” Critchley said. 
 
It was also reported that a third of attacks take place within the family which is the most common setting for abuse, and eight out of 10 victims had known their attacker in the past. The police said that it is estimated that only a few, like one in six offences, were reported to them.

TB Joshua, the late founder of one of the world's biggest Christian evangelical churches, the Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan) allegedly wrought widespread abuse and torture on his followers, BBC claimed in a&nbsp;report. Dozens of ex-church members who spoke to the outlet have alleged that Joshua subjected his followers to atrocities including rape and forced abortions.

The allegations of abuse in a secret compound in Lagos, Nigeria, span almost 20 years,&nbsp;as per a BBC investigation done in collaboration with international media platform Open Democracy.

Joshua, a charismatic leader, was hailed as one of the most influential pastors in African history. Before his death in June 2021, he established a daunting evangelical empire that had among its followers political leaders, celebrities and international footballers.

"We all thought we were in heaven, but we were in hell, and in hell terrible things happen," one of the victims, a British woman identified as Rae told BBC.

She claimed she was sexually assaulted by the church leader and subjected to a form of solitary confinement for two years.

Another former disciple, Jessica Kaimu, who belongs to Namibia, alleged that she too was raped by TB Joshua multiple times, the first time when she was just 17. She also claimed that she was subjected to forced abortions, a result of subsequent rapes by the powerful church leader.

"These were backdoor type… medical treatments that we were going through… it could have killed us," she said.

Other ex-disciples told tales of being stripped and beaten with electrical cables and horse whips.

More than 25 of TB Joshua's former disciples for the first time appeared on record. This includes five British nationals. Among them, a British man and his wife said they emailed eyewitness accounts and video evidence of their ordeal to the British High Commission in Nigeria in March 2010, after fleeing the church. The man, who alleged that his wife was raped multiple times by Joshua, said that in spite of the evidence no action was taken.

Refuting the allegations, Scoan, the church, said, "Making unfounded allegations against Prophet TB Joshua is not a new occurrence… None of the allegations was ever substantiated."
