<p>The goal is to make a lunar soft landing near the moon's 80 degree latitude (roughly 600 km&nbsp;away from the Lunar south pole) on August 23, which marks the start of the Lunar Day and then conduct in-situ experiments using the lander and rover. India's Chandrayaan-3 is now in space, historic journey to Moon begins

<p>India successfully launched Chandrayaan-3 on Friday (July 14) from its main spaceport in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh at 2:35pm local time (0905 GMT).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thousands had gathered at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, in Sriharikota to witness this historic feat when the Launch Vehicle Mark III (LVM3-M4) rocket carrying Chandrayaan-3 lifted off successfully.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Moon mission, which has a price tag of around $74.6 million, aims to successfully land a rover to explore the lunar surface. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The Sanskrit word Chandrayaan means "moon vehicle" and the rocket includes a two-metre tall lander, named Vikram, which is designed to deploy a rover near the lunar south pole.&nbsp;It is expected to remain functional for two weeks running a series of experiments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In recent decades, India's space programme has grown significantly, especially after sending a probe to orbit the moon in 2008 was a massive achievement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India also became the first Asian nation to put a satellite into orbit around Mars in 2014, and three years later, the ISRO launched 104 satellites in a single mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ISRO's Gaganyaan ("Skycraft") programme is slated to launch a three-day manned mission into Earth's orbit by next year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle in its 51st mission of the PSLV-C49&nbsp;is an earth observation satellite meant for applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.</p>

<p>PSLV-C49&nbsp;is carrying customer satellites from Luxembourg, USA and &nbsp;Lithuania.</p>

<p>All nine customer satellites have been successfully separated and injected into their intended orbit, ISRO informed.</p>

<p>Apart from the 50th launch, Wednesday's launch marks several milestones for ISRO. It is the second flight of PSLV in 'QL' configuration (with four strap-on motors). This will be the 75th launch vehicle mission from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota and 37th launch from the First Launchpad.</p>

<p>The PSLV is a four-stage rocket with the first stage and third stage using solid-propellant rocket motors, whereas the second a fourth stage use liquid-propellant rocket motors.</p>

<p>It is considered the most reliable launch vehicle of ISRO as it has flown 47 of its 49 missions successfully.</p>

<p>The only failures of missions involving the PSLV rocket occurred in 1993 (first launch) and 2017 (41st launch).&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to ISRO,&nbsp;RISAT-2BR1 will be used for agriculture, forestry and disaster management.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chandrayaan-2&nbsp;is set to blast off at 2:51 am on July 15 in Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.</p>

<p>Chandrayaan-2, which has home-grown technology, will explore the far sight of South Pole of Moon where no mission has ever set foot.</p>

<p>It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon.</p>

<p>India's second moon mission is also grabbing attention from western media and scientific journals. They also hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a US based newspaper said that India's space program&nbsp;gained "new prominence" under the leader.</p>

<p>"The mission will also serve as a proof of principle, demonstrating that India possesses the technical prowess not only to land on the moon but also to remotely operate a robotic rover there," the report added.</p>

<p>The Guardian newspaper reporting the same stated, "At 2.51am on Monday 15 July, engineers at India’s national spaceport at Sriharikota will blast their Chandrayaan-2 probe into orbit around the Earth. It will be the most ambitious space mission the nation has attempted."</p>

<p>As the 25-hour countdown which began Tuesday concluded, the agency's trusted workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C46) blasted off at 5.30 am from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here on its 48th mission, carrying the 615 kg satellite.</p>

<p>The RISAT-2B (Radar Imaging Satellite-2B), meant for application in fields such as surveillance, agriculture, forestry and disaster management support, was released into the orbit around 15 minutes after the lift-off.</p>

<p>It would replace the RISAT-2, which was successfully launched in 2009.</p>

<p>Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan had earlier described the mission as a "very, very important" one for the country.</p>

<p>"This is a very, very important mission for India. It is an excellent satellite with hi-fi earth observation (capabilities)," he had said.</p>

<p>The RISAT-2B is equipped with a synthetic aperture radar that can take pictures of the earth during day and night, and also under cloudy conditions.</p>

<p>With a mission life of five years, the satellite would also be used for military surveillance, ISRO sources told PTI.</p>

<p>The RISAT-2 has been actively used by India to monitor activities in camps across the border in Pakistan to thwart infiltration bids by terrorists.</p>

<p>The PSLV-C46 was the 14th flight of the PSLV in its core-alone configuration sans the use of the solid strap-on motors.</p>

<p>It was the 72nd launch vehicle mission from Sriharikota and also marked the 36th launch from the first launch pad.</p>

<p>Wednesday's launch of the PSLV also marked the third launch in 2019.</p>

<p>The other two were the PSLV-C45/EMISAT mission, which successfully injected the EMISAT and 29 international customer satellites into their orbits on April 1, and the PSLV-C44, which successfully placed the Microsat-R and the Kalamsat-V2 satellites in designated orbits on January 24.</p>

<p>ISRO had launched RISAT-1, a microwave remote sensing satellite, on April 26, 2012 from Sriharikota.</p>

<p>The 2140-kg GSAT-6A is a high power S-band communication satellite and would complement the services provided by GSAT 6 since its launch in 2015. It will be a technology demonstrator for high power S-band transmission from the satellite for supporting two-way communication, according to ISRO.</p>

<p>The satellite will also provide a platform for developing technologies such as demonstration of 6m S-Band Unfurlable Antenna, handheld ground terminals and network management techniques that could be useful in satellite-based mobile communication applications.</p>

<p>ISRO had made significant improvements in the GSLV Mk-II rocket including induction of high thrust Vikas engine in the second stage. The three-stage launch vehicle weighing 415.6 tonnes also was deployed with electromechanical actuation system in place of electro-hydraulic actuation system for much better reliability.</p>
