<p>Chief judicial magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri sentenced the actor to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks, capping a 20-year case that began with a late night safari outside the tourist city of Jodhpur on the sidelines of a film shoot in 1998.</p>

<p>"The accused is a popular actor whose deeds are followed by people. Despite this, the accused hunted two blackbucks," Khatri said in his written judgment.</p>

<p>The defence had argued that Salman has not been convicted in any case earlier and that he has always appeared before the court on the given date.</p>

<p>In an Instagram post, Sofia wrote a lengthy letter pointing out that the entire Bollywood is scared of Salman and has thus not spoken in favour of the judgment. She goes on to talk about ‘karma catching up’ highlighting the importance of ‘animals’ on this planet.&nbsp;</p>

Lots of children look up to him, and he has a responsibility to the young people. What is he showing the world when he does things like this? What lessons is he giving them? That it is ok to break the law, to kill animals and then mock it because he is a celebrity? In any western country, he would have been vilified for this and the drink driving deaths that he caused. He has then reinvented himself as a charitable man to try and compensate his karma. Today, India has shown that no matter who you are, if you break the law, you are no bigger than the law. I have heard so many young people in India speak about how they are afraid to go to the police about crimes committed by others because they watch the tv and see how people with money and status get away with it because they have paid off the police or the judge or the lawyers. This happened to me when Armaan Kohli paid off 2 of my lawyers so that I could not continue with the case, Dolly Bindra also told me that Armaan's family are powerful enough to put drugs in my bag at the airport and I would be in Jail. I had to then drop the case as all the lawyers I hired were paid off. Today, Hindustan can stand strong and hold its head up high to the world and show them that justice is held up in India, and today, all the poor people have been shown a glimmer of hope in their own fight for justice against those who have manipulated the law. That it is ok to break the law, to kill animals and then mock it because he is a celebrity? In any western country he would have been vilified for this and the drink driving deaths that he caused. This happened to me when Armaan Kohli paid off 2 of my lawyers so that I could not continue with the case, Dolly Bindra also told me that Armaans family are powerful enough to put drugs in my bag at the airport and I would be in Jail. I had to then drop the case as all the lawyers I hired were paid off. Today, Hindustan can stand strong and hold its head up high to the world and show them that justice is held up in India, and today, all the poor people have been shown a glimmer of hope in their own fight for justice against those who have manipulated the law. Today I can say Hindustaan Zindabaad! A post shared by Sofia Hayat (@sofiahayat) on Apr 5, 2018 at 10:40am PDT ×

Blackbuck case timeline: Salman Khan gets convicted, others acquitted

Salman Khan

<p>It took the court 20 long years to convict 'serial offender' Salman Khan in the Blackbuck poaching case. And while most would accuse the judiciary for taking such a long time to declare its judgement, it is also a small victory for the Bishnoi community which <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/blackbuck-poaching-case-verdict-salman-khan-convicted-128435">kept the legal battle going for the past two decades.</a>&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the case, Salman Khan and others were accused of killing two blackbucks in Bhagoda ki Dhani in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the night of October 1, 1998 -- during the shooting of their film Hum Saath Saath Hain. Meet the Bishnois: The community that kept the Blackbuck case against Salman going for 20 years

<p>Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been accused of killing two blackbucks, n endangered species protected under Wildlife Protection Act, in Bhagoda ki Dhani in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the intervening night of 1-2 October 1998, during the shooting of Hum Saath Saath Hain.</p>

<p>The Chief Judicial Magistrate Rural Court in Jodhpur, Rajasthan will be announcing the verdict in the blackbuck case in Kankani tomorrow, April 5, 2018.</p>

<p>Other actor charged in the case included Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre and Tabu. The killings angered the Bishnoi community, who protect wildlife with a zeal, and they filed a complaint against the actors and a local involved in the shooting. He was also charged for keeping an arm with an expired license and was charged under the Arms Act. Salman Khan was later acquitted in the arms case by a trial court.</p>

<p>"All of them were in a Gypsy car that night, with Salman Khan in the driving seat. He, on spotting a herd of black bucks, shot at and killed two of them," Public Prosecutor Bhawani Singh Bhati had said.</p>

<p>Salman Khan is facing charges under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the other actors have been charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.</p>

<p>Refuting these allegations, Salman Khan's counsel H M Saraswat said there were several loopholes in the prosecution's story and it had failed to prove its case beyond any doubt.</p>

<p>"Prosecution has failed to prove the allegations. It engaged in tampering and fabricating evidence and documents as well as roping in fake witnesses to prove its case," he said.</p>

<p>"It even failed to prove that the blackbucks were killed by gunshots. Hence, such investigation cannot be trusted," Saraswat said.</p>

<p>The case also involved two more accused, Dushyant Singh, who was allegedly accompanying the actors when the poaching took place, and Dinesh Gawre said to be Salman Khan's assistant.</p>

<p>"Gawre never appeared in court and was made to disappear by the main accused. Had he been around, there could have been more information available in the case," Bhati claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were two more cases against Salman Khan for allegedly killing two chinkaras (Indian gazelle) in Bhawad area and another in Mathania both in Rajasthan. But, the actor was later acquitted by Rajasthan High Court in 2016 for the poaching of the chinkaras. The prosecutors have challenged his acquittal in a higher court which is currently pending in the SC.</p>

<p>Chinkara, or Indian Gazelle, is an endangered animal accorded the highest protection under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife protection Act 1972. In 2013, the HC had suspended the trial court verdict to allow Salman to travel out of the country for a film shoot. Salman was accused of hunting two Chinkaras at Bhawad in Mathania near Jodhpur on September 26, 1998, and another Chinkara at Ghoda farms two days later on September 28th, while he was in Jodhpur filming for Hum Saath Saath Hain.<br />
