FIFA on Monday announced that it will suspend the contracts of foreign players currently tied to Ukrainian and Russian clubs for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

Concerning the situation in Ukraine, in order to provide players and coaches with the opportunity to work and receive a salary, and to protect Ukrainian clubs, unless the parties to the relevant contract explicitly agree otherwise, all employment contracts of foreign players and coaches with clubs affiliated to the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) will be deemed automatically suspended until the end of the season in Ukraine (30 June 2022), without the need for any action from the parties to this effect.

In order to facilitate the departure of foreign players and coaches from Russia, in the event that clubs affiliated to the Football Union of Russia (FUR) do not reach a mutual agreement with their respective foreign players and coaches before or on March 10, 2022 and unless otherwise agreed in writing, the foreign players and coaches will have the right to unilaterally suspend their employment contracts with the FUR-affiliated clubs in question until the end of the season in Russia (30 June 2022).

The suspension of a contract as per the paragraphs above will mean that players and coaches will be considered "out of contract" until June 30, 2022 and will therefore be at liberty to sign a contract with another club without facing consequences of any kind.

"Following the escalation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has led to an ongoing and distressing humanitarian crisis, the Bureau of the FIFA Council has decided - in coordination with UEFA and after consultation with various stakeholders - to temporarily amend the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP) in order to provide legal certainty and clarity on a number of matters," FIFA in a statement said.

In order for this exception to be applicable and to protect the integrity of competitions, the registration with the new club needs to occur before or on April 7, 2022.

To further protect the integrity of competitions, clubs are entitled to register a maximum of two players who have benefited from the exception.

Russia has been slapped with multiple sanctions because of its actions in Ukraine ever since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered "military operations" in the Ukrainian cities on February 24.

The sanctions have left the economy crippled and reeling, however, the exodus of many top Western brands from Russia has left the market open for some of the countries, that are allies of Russia.

For example, as per Daily Mail, reports in China stated that tech giant Huawei has been helping Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to stabilise Russia's internet network, which came under attack by hacker groups.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has allegedly likened the sanctions announced by the West on Russia over attack on Ukraine equivalent to a “declaration of war”.

While speaking to a group of women flight attendants at an Aeroflot training centre near Moscow, the Russian president reportedly said that Ukraine’s leaders would risk the future of their nation’s statehood if they continued to resist Russia’s invasion.

According to reports, the driver was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign and going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone.

When he was asked reasons for speeding, the man reportedly said that he was rushing home to find out more information claiming that Putin ordered a potential nuclear strike.

"To tell you the truth, I just found out that Putin has just said he is going to launch a nuclear thermal war against the world," the driver explained to the officer.

"I was trying to get back to my house to find out what is going on.

Russian invasion has claimed dozens of civilian lives, forced hundreds and thousands of Ukrainians to flee west and could, according to the EU, eventually displace up to seven million people. This is what the leaders had to say... #ukraine #russia #ukraineconflict

Russian-Ukraine Crisis: Who said what on the situation

FIFA and UEFA have taken a big step in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. In the aftermath of the sad turn of events in Ukraine, Russia's national teams and clubs have been suspended from international football until further notice.

With this, it seems likely that Russia will be excluded from this year's World Cup as well as from the women's Euro 2020 tournament.

"FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice," UEFA said in a statement. "These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters," they added.

The move was very likely to take place soon as there has been a lot of noise in the sporting fraternity to ban Russian teams, or players, from various sports.

For the unversed, Russia was scheduled to host Poland in a World Cup qualifying playoff on March 24. Hence if they remain suspended at that time, they would be out of the World Cup and unable to progress to the finals in Qatar, to be held later this year in November.

The Polish FA had made it clear that they will not play against the Russian team. Moreover, the Czech Republic and Sweden -- who are in the same playoff path -- had also ruled out locking horns with Russia.

While everything is on the decline for Russian sports, since the Ukraine invasion, not all is lost. The only way Russia could still see them featuring in the playoffs would be courtesy a drastic improvement in the current state of affairs in Ukraine. Nonetheless, at present, their sporting icons are facing the music due to the country's attack on Ukraine.

"Both Presidents (of the soccer bodies) hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people," UEFA said.

The organisation also pointed out that a further decision would be made at a later date about the impact on the women's Euro 2022 tournament, set to be held in England during mid-2022. The Russian team have qualified for the showpiece event.

The enforced non-participation of badminton athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus commences at the German Open 2022 (8-13 March).

A small number of Russian athletes competing in two back-to-back international Para badminton tournaments in Spain in Weeks 9 and 10 of the calendar will be allowed to participate as they have already arrived on location. Among thousands of Indians scrambling to get back to their home amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is a 17-year-old girl who has chosen to stay back.

A girl from Haryana, who is studying medicine in Ukraine, has refused to leave the war-torn country even though she got an opportunity to get evacuated.

Neha decided to stay back in order to support the children and wife of the house owner who voluntarily joined the Ukrainian Army to fight in the ongoing war against Russia.

Savita Jakhar, a close friend of Neha's mother, made a Facebook post to express her concern for Neha. The post was picked up by many news outlets.

"My friend pulled out all stops trying to contact the embassy to rescue her from there, but the kid doesn't want to leave the children and their mother alone," she said on Facebook.

Americans are showing some of the highest levels of hostility toward the Russian Federation in 40 years, with Russophobia reaching Cold War levels.

The poll done for ABC News and the Washington Post found that 80% of Americans see Russia as unfriendly or an enemy of the United States.
That’s the worst since 1983, when Russia was part of the Soviet Union - although Americans used to refer to the whole region as Russia. That was also the height of Cold War, when nuclear tensions between Russia and the West were at their peak.

Now, just 12% of Americans see Russia as a friend of the US, found the new poll, which was conducted between Sunday and Thursday when Russia began its military operations targeting Ukraine.

That number was at its highest in 1993, two years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, when two-thirds of Americans saw Russia as friendly toward the US.
