The White House has warned that Russia may attack Ukraine with chemical or biological weapons while rejecting Russia’s allegation that US is supporting the bioweapons programme in Kyiv.

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of running chemical and biological weapons labs with U.S. support.

Responding to the claims, White House press secretary Jen Psaki termed the allegations “preposterous” and said it could be part of an attempt by Russia to lay the groundwork for its own use of such weapons of mass destruction against Ukraine.

They said they were "very concerned" about the risk the war could escalate, and particularly the possibility of Russia using non-conventional weapons.

“This is all an obvious ploy by Russia to try to justify its further premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified attack on Ukraine,” Psaki tweeted on Wednesday.

“Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them,” she said.

On Wednesday, the UK Ministry of Defence in a tweet claimed that Russia had used thermobaric rockets, also known as vacuum bombs, in Ukraine.

Thermobaric munition is said to be more powerful than any other conventional weapon, and many regard it as the "father of all bombs."

The bomb sucks in oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion. &nbsp;

It produces a blast wave of a longer duration than that of a conventional explosive and can vaporise human bodies. &nbsp;

“Europe is sending over a quarter of a billion to Putin every day, even as he wages war in its own backyard. This has to end. But we should not simply swap Russian oil for Saudi oil. It’s time to greatly improve transport efficiency and turbocharge the electrification of transport to drive down our oil consumption,” William Todts, executive director of T&amp;E, said.

European countries are reliant on Russian oil for over a quarter of their crude oil.

While some European countries like Slovakia are dependent on Russia for over 90 per cent of their oil, the continent’s dependence as a whole, while significant, is not significant, the analysis shows.

The report was released just days ahead of the announcement made by the&nbsp;US to ban Russian oil imports. Shell also said that it would shut down its Russian petrol stations and oil spot purchases.

Putin's war on Ukraine being bolstered by oil payments from Europe: Report

Even though China has claimed to hold a neutral position in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, a report has emerged about a Chinese journalist getting access to the Russian army in a bid to counter the information war against the Western media.

According to UK newspaper Telegraph, a journalist working for a state-owned Chinese broadcaster has been reporting freely from Russian-captured cities in Ukraine, holding interviews with the Russian soldiers and capturing footage of where the troops are stationed.

From landing an exclusive interview with Denis Pushilin, the head of the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic, or talking to Russian soldiers, journalist Lu Yuguang has been pushing Kremlin’s views as most of the Russian news channels and agencies have been banned as part of the sanctions by the West, reports the newspaper.

Moscow describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” to disarm its neighbour and unseat leaders it calls neo-Nazis, while the Western media calls it an “invasion”.

World Athletics banned Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from all events for the foreseeable future on Tuesday, as more sporting bodies sanctioned athletes from the two countries in response to Russia`s invasion of Ukraine.

Since the start of what Russian President Vladimir Putin has called "a special military operation" last week, Russian and Belarusian teams and athletes have found themselves frozen out from international competitions across a number of sports.

Belarus has been a key staging area for Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. On Monday, the International Olympic Committee`s (IOC) executive board recommended sports federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from competing in events.

World Athletics said its council also agreed to consider further measures, including the suspension of the Belarus Federation, at its scheduled Council meeting next week.

The Russian Athletics Federation has been suspended from World Athletics since 2015 due to doping violations, and hence its competitors have not been allowed to compete under the country`s flag at international events.

World Athletics said the new sanction also included Russian athletes who had the Authorised Neutral Athlete (ANA) status in 2022.

"Anyone who knows me will understand that imposing sanctions on athletes because of the actions of their government goes against the grain," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.

"I have railed against the practice of politicians targeting athletes and sport to make political points when other sectors continue about their business.

"This is different as governments, business and other international organisations have imposed sanctions and measures against Russia across all sectors. Sport has to step up and join these efforts to end this war and restore peace. We cannot and should not sit this one out."

The badminton federation (BWF) banned Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international competition from next Tuesday. However, the BWF said it is allowing Russian players to compete at two Para badminton tournaments in Spain this week as they have already arrived on location.

"These players, however, will compete as neutral athletes, with no national flags or anthems," the BWF added. 
The global governing bodies for rowing, skiing (FIS) and volleyball (FIVB) have also banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions until further notice.

"With immediate effect, no Russian or Belarusian athlete shall participate in any FIS competition at any level through the end of the 2021-2022 season," FIS said in a statement.

FIVB`s ban covers all teams, clubs and officials across beach and snow volleyball too. The decision came shortly after FIVB had stripped Russia of the men`s world championship.

The international shooting federation (ISSF) said Russian and Belarusian athletes stopped participation during the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol in Cairo, Egypt.

German sportswear company Adidas suspended its partnership with the Russian Football Union (RFS) with immediate effect on Tuesday.

Swimming`s world governing body FINA, which on Sunday called off the World Junior Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia, said on Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian athletes could only compete as neutral athletes or neutral teams.

"No national symbols, colours, flags should be displayed or anthems should be played in international Aquatics events which are not already part of the respective World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions for Russia," FINA said.

It added that the FINA Order awarded to Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2014 has been withdrawn. 
Paralympic committees from the U.S. and Canada (CPC) said Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to compete at international sporting events, including the Beijing Paralympics which begins on Friday.

The CPC also urged the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to "consider revoking the memberships of Russia and Belarus" from the IPC.

The IPC will meet on Wednesday to discuss Russia ahead of the Beijing Games.

Russian Daniil Kvyat, who is the Alpine Formula One outfit`s reserve driver this season, said banning his country`s athletes and teams was an "unfair solution".

"...Sport should remain outside politics and disallowing Russian athletes and teams from participating in world competitions is an unfair solution and goes against what sport teaches us in its principle - the unity and peace," Kvyat tweeted on Tuesday.

"Who else if not us sports people will help to glue nations together in the upcoming times."

On Monday, soccer governing bodies FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia`s national teams and clubs, making it likely the country will be excluded from this year`s men`s World Cup and the women`s Euro 2022 tournament.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said on Sunday that it had taken `swift action` to cancel all events in Russia indefinitely and that no ITF events would be held in Belarus for 2022.

However, the sport`s two professional tours, the men`s ATP and women`s WTA, have not announced any action against the two countries.

Ukraine`s Elina Svitolina refused to play against Russia`s Anastasia Potapova at the Monterrey Open and said she would not play any Russians or Belarusians until the sport`s governing bodies implement the IOC`s recommendations.

Lokomotiv Moscow coach Markus Gisdol said on Tuesday that he has resigned from his position at the Russian Premier League side in protest against Russia`s war with Ukraine, but the club insisted he had in fact been sacked.

In a statement published by German newspaper Bild, Gisdol said he had been forced to take action having witnessed what is going on in Ukraine.

"I cannot pursue my calling in a country whose leader is responsible for a war of aggression in the middle of Europe," the 52-year-old said. "That is not in line with my values, which is why I have resigned from my position as coach with immediate effect.

"I can`t stand on the training ground in Moscow, train the players, demand professionalism and a few kilometres away orders are given that bring great suffering to an entire people. That is my personal decision and I am absolutely convinced of it."

His club, however, took to Twitter to say that Gisdol had been dismissed.

"Markus Gisdol was dismissed from the post of head coach of FC Lokomotiv. The club and the team are working as usual and are concentrating on achieving the maximum results in the upcoming matches," Lokomotiv said.

Three Brazilian footballers who play for Ukrainian Premier Liga club SK Dnipro-1 have fled the war-torn nation and crossed the border into Romania, they said on social media on Saturday.

Moreover, the Indian mission in Ukraine has issued an advisory, saying that an evacuation route from Romania and Hungary is being established. It has asked them to print the Indian flag and place it prominently on vehicles.

Ukraine has closed its airspace in the wake of the Russian invasion. An Air India flight that was sent to the capital Kiev to retrieve students had to return to New Delhi.

Later, India sent government teams to Ukraine's borders from Hungary and Poland to evacuate the citizens.

Around 4,000 Indians have already been evacuated since the government set up repatriation efforts a month ago. And India is planning to evacuate 16,000 stranded there.
