In an escalation of his feud with&nbsp;Disney, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a bill into law that&nbsp;gives a new board he controls, the power to void development agreements with the entertainment giant, signed by a predecessor body.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under the new law,&nbsp;a new board appointed by DeSantis to govern the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, which houses the Walt Disney World resort can cancel any deals signed up to three months before the board's creation.&nbsp;

"Make no mistake about it, the reason why the legislature had to act was not because of anything we did," said DeSantis at a press conference on Friday.

"It was basically born out of Disney’s arrogance that they would be able to subcontract around the duly enacted laws of the state of Florida. That's wrong."

The new oversight body has also ruled out Disney's plans for potential expansion of Disney World in Orlando stating it does not comply with the state law.&nbsp;

Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis—widely expected to run for president in 2024—has signed a bill that prohibits women who are into six weeks of pregnancy from getting abortions.

The bill became law late Thursday night after DeSantis’ nod, just hours after Florida's Republican-led House of Representatives approved the ban, with 70 voting for and 40 voting against. It had been passed in the state Senate on April 3.

The legislation will take effect only if the state's current 15-week ban is upheld in an ongoing legal challenge currently before the Florida Supreme Court.

“We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said after acceding to the bill.

He claimed the law would "defend the dignity of human life and transform Florida into a pro-family state".

The move comes months after the Florida Supreme Court agreed to take up a legal challenge to the state’s 15-week abortion ban on a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union, and a handful of abortion providers challenging the recently-passed law.

The conservative top court had previously upheld the right to abortion by citing a decades-old privacy clause in the state constitution that extends those rights to abortion.

Florida has been considered a safe haven for those seeking abortion since Roe v. Wade—which gave women the constitutional right to abortion—was overturned in June last year.

The bill, though, contains some exceptions, including saving the woman’s life.&nbsp; Abortions for pregnancies involving rape or incest would be allowed until 15 weeks of pregnancy, provided a woman has documentation such as a restraining order or police report. DeSantis has called the rape and incest provisions sensible.

There has been a national debate over abortion rights in the US since a federal judge suspended the original approval of a widely used abortion drug, mifepristone, last week.

That suspension was later blocked by an appellate court, and the Biden administration has said it will ask the Supreme Court to restore full access to the drug.

The victims were transported to the hospital where they died of their injuries, said the Orlando police.&nbsp;The suspect too died of injuries after being transported to the hospital. Three including a child killed in Florida home shooting, assailant shot by cops

A school teacher in Florida, United States, has been fired for asking students to write their own obituaries. Jeffrey Keene, the dismissed teacher, taught psychology at Dr Phillips high school in the Orlando area. As per a Guardian report, the assignment didn't have malicious intent, rather the teacher just wanted his students to reflect on their own lives as they participate in an active shooter drill. In Florida, a state that in recent days has been plagued by mass shootings, preparations for gun attacks have become commonplace.

Keene had assigned his 11th and 12th-grade students to write their biographical obituaries. As per the 63-year-old teacher, while giving them the assignment, he told the students, "This isn't a way to upset you or anything like that."

Talking to NBC News, Keene said "It wasn't to scare them or make them feel like they were going to die, but just to help them understand what’s important in their lives and how they want to move forward with their lives and how they want to pursue things in their journey."

"If you can't talk real to them, then what's happening in this environment?" he said, adding, "in my mind, I've done nothing wrong."

Vowing to not change his teaching methods, Keene said that he hopes to find another job.

"I don't think I did anything incorrectly," Keene said. "I know hindsight is 20/20, but I honestly didn't think a 16, 17, 18-year-old would be offended or upset by talking about something we're already talking about."

However, a representative for the Orange County School District labelled the assignment "inappropriate".

In response, Florida lawmakers passed, and DeSantis signed, legislation revamping the government-like board that oversees Walt Disney World’s 27,000-acre (11,000-hectare) property outside Orlando. Among the changes the legislation made was that the Florida governor got to pick the five supervisors of the governing board instead of it being controlled by Disney, as it had been in its previous 55 years.

During the shareholders’ meeting, Iger declared the company’s love for the state of Florida, noting it was the largest taxpayer in the state and employed around 75,000 workers. The company has plans to make $17 billion in investments at Disney World over the next 10 years that will create an additional 13,000 jobs, he said.

DeSantis on Monday asked Florida’s chief inspector general, with help from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, to launch an investigation into the actions of the previous board.

DeSantis said in a letter to the chief inspector general that any legal or ethical violations should be referred to “the appropriate authorities.”

“Disney is again fighting to keep its special corporate benefits and dodge Florida law,” DeSantis spokesman Jeremy Redfern said in an email. “We are not going to let that happen. As Governor DeSantis recently said, ‘You ain’t seen nothing yet.’”

This step was taken after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz on February 14, 2018, opened fire on students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Miami suburban town of Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people including students and faculty.

Reacting to DeSantis'&nbsp;bill, Fred Guttenberg, father of Jaime, a 14-year-old girl who was killed in the high school shooting, said "I am pissed."

Addressing reporters during an online news conference, he said: "I will chase him down across the state as well as possibly across the country ... because Ron DeSantis today put his signature to a bill that guarantees there will be more Jaimes."

"Somebody in Florida may die ... because of this legislation. That will be because of you, Ron DeSantis," he said.&nbsp;

Things worsened when it emerged that the company, then-led by Bob Chapek&nbsp;had made donations to many of those who voted in favour of the bill.&nbsp;

Chapek and Disney tried to course-correct. But only mildly, as per critics. In a meeting with shareholders, the beleaguered Chapek claimed he and the company had been opposed to the proposed bill from the outset, but did not give voice to the opposition.

&nbsp;The reason? The company thought it would be more effective to work behind the scenes. The statement read, "While we’ve been strong supporters of the (LGBTQ) community for decades, I know that many are upset that we did not speak out against the bill. Now, we were opposed to the bill from the outset, but we chose not to take a public position on it because we thought we could be more effective working behind the scenes, engaging directly with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle." He also said Disney is pausing all political donations in Florida. Then DeSantis decided to go after Disney.

The district's hefty $1 billion debt would have been transferred to the counties, making DeSantis' position untenable.

Thus, DeSantis and his supporters in Florida legislature decided to be clever about it. They chose to keep Disney's special tax district and other related perks. But the board that supervises the district, as mentioned above, will be appointed by DeSantis.

<h2>What has been Disney's response?</h2>

The company is now led by Bob Iger, who has been the architect of its meteoric rise in the field of film and television thanks to acquisitions like Star Wars and Marvel that have turned out extremely profitable. Chapek's handling of the bill may have been one of the reasons he was ousted in November, 2022. But this may be a big test for even Iger. Whatever his personal views, he is going to have to tread the ground lightly.&nbsp;

Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, said in a statement that the company "is ready to work within this new framework. We will continue to innovate, inspire and bring joy to the millions of guests who come to Florida to visit Walt Disney World each year."

Nevertheless, opponents of DeSantis view this move as an attempt to undermine the autonomy of a corporation that employs over 80,000 individuals just in Florida for political gain leading up to the 2024 US presidential election.

The College Board, in a statement, said, “Like all new AP courses, AP African American Studies is undergoing a rigorous, multi-year pilot phase, collecting feedback from teachers, students, scholars and policymakers.”

“The process of piloting and revising course frameworks is a standard part of any new AP course, and frameworks often change significantly as a result,” read the statement.

The course has been described as interdisciplinary by the College Board website, which further states that it touches on humanities, arts, science, literature, geography and political science. For more than a decade, the organisation has been working on creating the course, as per the website.&nbsp;

DeSantis, a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential race, has raised opposition against what he terms as liberal ideologies in schools, which include studies around critical race theory that studies systemic racism and has become conservatives' frequent target.&nbsp;

“Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump,” David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA Today.

DeSantis was a candidate endorsed by Trump while he was president and thanks to his handling of several natural disasters and conservative stance, the Florida governor has created his own base.

“In July, 60% of Republicans wanted Trump to run again. In October, that number had dipped to 56%. Now it has fallen to 47%, an almost-even split with the 45% who don’t want him to run for a third time,” Paleologos explained when asked about Trump’s current dip in popularity.

The situation does not get any better when Trump was pitted against the incumbent President Joe Biden. The poll shows that Biden holds a 47%-40% lead over his predecessor. However, when it comes to DeSantis, Biden loses ground considerably with the Republican leading 47%-43%.

DeSantis, who was comfortably re-elected last month, has yet to declare if he intends to run for the 2024 elections, but his popularity seems to be surging.

The Florida governor is viewed as the main rival of the former president as he shares most of Trump's political positions.

The opinion poll conducted by the Desert News-Hinckley Institute of Politics between November 18 and November 23 mirrors several other surveys which peg DeSantis firmly ahead of Trump.

According to the national survey released by Marquette Law School, Trump's unfavourable rating has increased to 67 per cent among registered voters, with one-third of Republicans and GOP-leaning voters now viewing him negatively.

Trump’s dwindling popularity is co-terminus with the disappointing midterm election results, which saw several candidates backed by the former president losing.

A poll released by WPA Intelligence last week, which polled 1,160 registered voters in America, confirmed as much when it found that a full 64 per cent of all voters blame the ex-president for the poor showing by GOP candidates in the midterms.
