<p>Biden’s remarks came during a White House event on Monday to mark the Indian festival Diwali.</p>

<p>"We've got news that Rishi Sunak is now the prime minister. He's expected to become the prime minister I think tomorrow when he goes to see the King. Pretty astounding. A ground-breaking milestone and it matters," Biden said.</p>

<p>Later, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden has plans to call Sunak to "offer his congratulations".</p>

<p>Forty-two-year-old Sunak will become the first person of colour to helm the prime minister post in the UK’s history. &nbsp;He is also the third British premiere this year after Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, who resigned last week after&nbsp;just 44 days in office.</p>

<p>On Monday, Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race, paving the way for Sunak to become the first non-white and Indian-origin PM of the country.</p>

<p>The former chancellor had secured the backing of over half the 357 Tory MPs – way above the 100 minimum required to make the shortlist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sir Graham Brady, chair of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, announced in the Parliament complex that he had received only one nomination and therefore Sunak is the winner of the Conservative leadership contest.</p>

<p>Sunak is expected to take office on Tuesday after being formally appointed by King Charles III.</p>

<p>Outgoing PM Truss will be chairing her final cabinet meeting at 9 am (local time) and then will make a statement outside No 10 before travelling to Buckingham Palace for her final audience with the King.</p>

<p>After this, Sunak will visit the monarch, who will ask the former to form the government.</p>

<p>He will then travel to Downing Street to make a statement at about 11.35 am, before entering his official residence, 10 Downing Street.</p>

<p>News that European gas prices were at a four-month low also spurred traders, as the reference Dutch TTF dipped below 100 euros for the first time since June, reaching 98.60 euros per megawatt hour at around 1030 GMT on Monday.</p>

<p>"Many see Sunak as the final chance for the Conservative Party as he has managed to maintain some credibility" compared with the uncertainty of the Truss and Johnson premierships, he added.</p>

<p>"Investors clearly hope Sunak will stabilise the economy and the political situation -- though it's hard to work out at this point which is the harder task," commented AJ Bell financial analyst Danni Hewson.</p>

<p>Yields on UK government bonds also dropped following recent surges in the wake of Truss's disastrous budget that led to her downfall.</p>

<p>Focus was also on the euro after new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took office.</p>

<p>Meloni's post-fascist Brothers of Italy scored a historic victory in general elections on September 25.</p>

<p>Her new government is the most far-right in Italy since World War II, and takes power at a time of decades-high inflation and an energy crisis linked to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.</p>

<p>Milan's stock market was up 1.3 percent in early afternoon trading on Monday, mirroring strong gains in Frankfurt and Paris, while yields on Italian government bonds also fell.</p>

<p>London was up by 0.6 percent in mid-afternoon trading, but the stronger pound and falling oil and gas prices were weighing on the heavyweight energy sector, according to traders.</p>

<p>The eurozone was meanwhile looking ahead to Thursday when the European Central Bank is expected to announce another bumper rise in interest rates aimed at curbing sky-high prices.</p>

<p>On the corporate front, Dutch medical device manufacturer Philips announced it would axe 4,000 jobs after its recall of faulty sleep respirators pushed it into a loss.</p>

<p>Following the news, the group's share price dropped 0.8 percent on the Amsterdam stock exchange on Monday.</p>

<p>Since Liz Truss resigned from the post following a torrid tenure, Johnson was being considered to be a tough opposition for Sunak in the race. However, the former Prime Minister decided to never launch his campaign stating that it was “simply not the right thing to do” and “not the right time”.</p>

<p>While 60 Conservative Party leaders publicly stated their support for Johnson to return to office, he claimed that he had the backing of 102 – enough to secure the mandate in the race.</p>

<p>“And though I have reached out to both Rishi and Penny – because I hoped that we could come together in the national interest – we have sadly not been able to work out a way of doing this.</p>

<p>“Therefore, I am afraid the best thing is that I do not allow my nomination to go forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds. I believe I have much to offer, but I am afraid that this is simply not the right time,” Johnson said in his official statement on Sunday.</p>

<p>With 100 votes needed to secure a victory, Sunak currently has around 165 supporters.</p>
