Researchers unleash AI's power to capture passwords through keystroke sounds

Breast milk is not just a source of nourishment for infants but also contains essential micronutrients crucial for healthy brain development. Recently, researchers made a significant finding about a specific component in breast milk, Myo-inositol, which plays a key role in promoting the formation of neural connections in the brains of infants.

This finding highlights the impact of dietary choices on brain function and underscores the importance of understanding breast milk's complexity beyond its nutritional value.

Myo-inositol

Myo-inositol is a small cyclic sugar molecule present in breast milk, commonly found in typical adult diets, including fruits and grains.

A study published in PNAS on July 11 highlights the role of Myo-inositol in supporting the development of neural connections in infants' brains.

“The effects of micronutrients on the brain are really under-appreciated,” says Thomas Biederer, PhD, associate professor of neurology and principal investigator. “As a neuroscientist, our findings were stunning to me.”

Previous research has indicated that breast milk positively influences infants' cognitive development, but the underlying reasons were not well understood. Some scientists speculated that breast milk contains unidentified components responsible for these benefits.

The research provides crucial insights into how breast milk's bioactive compounds support the infant brain's developmental processes.

The study's starting point was an analysis of breast milk samples donated by mothers from diverse geographical locations, including Cincinnati, Mexico City, and Shanghai, collected over the lactation period.

The researchers hypothesised that certain micronutrients present consistently across all samples, irrespective of diet, race, or location, might have significant biological significance.

They were particularly interested in identifying components that showed consistent changes throughout lactation.

Myo-inositol's role in neural connectivity

The researchers observed that Myo-inositol was present in high concentrations in all breast milk samples during early lactation and gradually decreased over time. Interestingly, this pattern remained consistent across all three locations. “The molecule is very robustly controlled by the mother,” says Biederer.

To understand its impact on brain development, the team studied the effects of Myo-inositol using various models, including cultured human neurons and brain tissue.

They found that the sugar molecule enhanced synapse abundance in neurons and promoted improved neuronal connectivity.

The value of breast milk

The study's findings highlight the significant value of breast milk in supporting the formation of connections in an infant's brain. “Our study demonstrates that breast milk is extremely valuable in how mothers can support the formation of connections in an infant’s brain,” says Biederer. “It truly shows the importance of valuing the complexity of breast milk. It’s not just a source of calories, but an extremely rich, complex biofluid, and the mother’s body is really attuned to changing the composition of breast milk to match what the infant needs at different stages of development.”

While the current study focused on the initial formation of connections in the brain during the first months after birth, the brain subsequently refines and optimises these connections. Myo-inositol Myo-inositol is a small cyclic sugar molecule present in breast milk, commonly found in typical adult diets, including fruits and grains. A study published in PNAS on July 11 highlights the role of Myo-inositol in supporting the development of neural connections in infants' brains. Some scientists speculated that breast milk contains unidentified components responsible for these benefits. Also Read | Asian masalanomics for spice trade spiced up in Vietnam 2000 years ago, reveals study The research provides crucial insights into how breast milk's bioactive compounds support the infant brain's developmental processes. Myo-inositol's role in neural connectivity The researchers observed that Myo-inositol was present in high concentrations in all breast milk samples during early lactation and gradually decreased over time. Interestingly, this pattern remained consistent across all three locations. “The molecule is very robustly controlled by the mother,” says Biederer. Watch | Rains soak Northern China as Doksuri makes its way to Beijing × To understand its impact on brain development, the team studied the effects of Myo-inositol using various models, including cultured human neurons and brain tissue. They found that the sugar molecule enhanced synapse abundance in neurons and promoted improved neuronal connectivity. The value of breast milk The study's findings highlight the significant value of breast milk in supporting the formation of connections in an infant's brain. “Our study demonstrates that breast milk is extremely valuable in how mothers can support the formation of connections in an infant’s brain,” says Biederer. “It truly shows the importance of valuing the complexity of breast milk. It’s not just a source of calories, but an extremely rich, complex biofluid, and the mother’s body is really attuned to changing the composition of breast milk to match what the infant needs at different stages of development.” While the current study focused on the initial formation of connections in the brain during the first months after birth, the brain subsequently refines and optimises these connections. Future research by Biederer aims to investigate how breast milk supports infants during this later stage of development, as refinement is a critical process in establishing the right patterns in the brain. Infant brain-boosting sugar molecule found in breast milk: Study

A little more than a decade after scientists discovered the remains of a 16-year-old Anglo-Saxon girl in UK's Cambridgeshire who died more than 1,300 years ago, they have managed to reveal her face using facial reconstruction.

A coffee research institute in Brazil, has begun a decisive stage in its two-decade-long project which is aimed at developing varieties of arabica coffee that are naturally decaffeinated. As per the researchers, this development can actually have significant commercial potential.

If the project ends successfully, the varieties achieved in the result can find a market niche in large consuming regions like the United States and Europe, where people are likely to prefer them over the current decaffeinated brands that provide coffee which is produced by chemical or industrial processes.

The researchers, working at the IAC, stated that regional field trials are being started by them of some of the varieties which they have developed for several years by crossing different coffee plants which naturally have very low caffeine content. In the process, the researchers used the germplasm bank at their facilities.

This is also likely to benefit the companies that will sell decaffeinated coffee as it will reduce costs since the process of removing caffeine from regular coffee varieties can be skipped by them.

“The results we had so far look promising, we are upbeat,” stated Julio Cesar Mistro, a researcher who is overseeing the project at IAC.

Researchers find 'pill' that can cut risk of death from lung cancer by half

A cleansing programme being run by the University of California Riverside is helping California get rid of industrial waste with the help of plants and fungi. The plants, referred to as solar-powered vacuum cleaners by experts, have an extraordinary ability to suck out heavy metals from soil and rid it completely of all forms of pollutants.

One such plant employed in the process is California buckwheat, whose beautiful pink and white flowers have this special ability to detoxify the soil. "That's the miracle of life," Kreigh Hampel, a 68-year-old volunteer was quoted as saying by the Phys.org website.

How does the detoxification process work?

Several California plants and fungi such as the telegraph weed, the California bush sunflower and Oyster mushrooms have the ability to suck up heavy metals and help decompose pollutants. They suck up metals like lead into their bodies. And later, when these plants are uprooted from the site, the soil gets effectively sanitised. “When we pull out the plants, we've removed the lead from the soil," says Danielle Stevenson, a mycologist and the leader of the programme.
The lightest paint in the world has been created by researchers at the University of Central Florida. The paint is energy-efficient, can be turned into any colour and will last for centuries, as per the claims made by the team that developed it.

The plasmonic paint has a nanoscale structural arrangement of colourless material, which is aluminium oxide and aluminium, and not the traditional pigments that are used to create colours.

The study was headed by Debashis Chanda, who works as a professor at UCF’s NanoScience Technology Centre. Chanda said that he took inspiration from butterflies.

"Structural colour serves as the primary colour-generating mechanism in several extremely vivid species where the geometrical arrangement of typically two colourless materials produces all colours. On the other hand, with man-made pigment, new molecules are needed for every colour present,” said Chanda, in a statement.

Imagine seeing a fourth ‘white’ light the next time you stop at a traffic signal. What purpose can it serve? Transportation engineers at the North Carolina State University have proposed a new ‘White Phase’ concept, which enables autonomous vehicles, or AVs, to help control traffic flow. It involves adding a fourth ‘white’ light to the standard red-yellow-green traffic signal layout. The concept is based on the possibility of AVs communicating wirelessly with both each other and the computer controlling the traffic light. Though workable in theory, the white phase concept is far from real-life implementation at this stage.

The research found unusual immune responses present in patients who are suffering from the loss of sense of smell for months. “It appears that there is an unresolved local immune response, which the delicate olfactory cells are seeing,” he said.

Since it was brought to the notice of doctors that many Covid patients are suffering the loss of smell, it has remained unclear if the sensory cells present in the nose and around the brain have individually or together suffered damage by the virus.

Biopsied tissue present in 24 Covid patients' nasal linings was studied by the researchers, which included nine patients who had no sense of smell for at least four months.

In the tissue, it was found that the nasal lining was infiltrated by T-cells involved in inflammation where smell nerve cells are present.

When the number of sensory nerve cells which are involved in smell was studied by the researchers, it was found that those suffering from loss of smell for a long time had fewer cells because the nasal lining's delicate issue was damaged by the T-cell-driven inflammation.

Goldstein added that other symptoms of Covid might be explained by similar immune responses.

WATCH| China witnesses a sharp surge in Covid Cases again This unusual immune response was present in patients who had no detectable coronavirus, which further indicated that the response persisted after the clearance of infection. “Currently, we have no specific, effective treatments. To develop therapies, we need to understand the pathobiology of the problem: what is damaged and where,” he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Dogs are an instant source of serotonin and oxytocin for many.
Reportedly, the study published by Japanese scientists in the journal Current Biology states that dogs tear up with joy and happiness whenever they are reunited with their owners after a prolonged period of absence.

Chinese researchers caused a massive stir in the scientific community when they claimed that the “Sky Eye” telescope has picked up signals which they believed originated from aliens. However, that claim has now been questioned by an American researcher. Dan Werthimer, which works for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) at the University of Berkeley, California and a co-author on the research project which first spotted the signal, believes that the signals are actually from “human interference”. The news about the signals coming from aliens was reported by a lot of media outlets after it appeared on the official newspaper of China's Ministry of Science and Technology.

Alien signal or human interference? Researcher using 'Sky Eye' telescope explains

Finally, the 700-year-old mystery of the origins of the Black Death seems to have been solved by researchers. After in-depth study, the experts have traced it to Central Asia. Occurred in the mid-14th century, Black Death was one of the deadliest pandemic in history as it had swept across Asia, Europe and north Africa. This bubonic plague seems to have spread along trade routes. At that time, millions of people died. At two cemeteries near Lake Issyk-Kul in the north of modern-day Kyrgyzstan, the evidence has been discovered for surge in deaths in the late 1330s by Dr Philip Slavin, historian, University of Stirling. After this development, an international team was formed to unravel the mystery of the Black Death.

At these cemeteries, 467 tombstones dated between 1248 and 1345 were present. Among them, around 118 stones were dated 1338 or 1339. Slavin found that the reason for spike in deaths was “mawtānā” (Syriac language term), which means “pestilence” as mentioned on the tombstones.

In 1880s, the sites were excavated and 30 skeletons were removed from the graves. On studying the excavations, the team traced the remains to particular tombstones at the cemeteries.
On extracting the genetic material from the teeth of the skeletons, these experts found the DNA from Yersinia pestis in three people buried at the cemeteries. Yersinia pestis is the bacterium, which causes bubonic plague. The bacterium’s genome analysis revealed that it is an ancestor of the strain, which led to the Black Death in Europe some years later.

Researchers unravel 700-year-old mystery of origins of deadly pandemic 'Black Death'

The face of a petite and dark-haired woman has been reconstructed by the researchers. What is special about this woman is that she was one of the richest residents of Bronze-Age Bohemia as she was buried with two gold earrings, five bronze bracelets and a three-strand necklace with over 400 amber beads. Not just this, three bronze sewing needles were also placed along with her body in the tomb. This rich woman was a part of the Únětice culture.

As per the radiocarbon dating of her cemetery, the woman seems to have lived between 1880 BC and 1750 BC. The graveyard is located near Mikulovice village in Czech Republic. The area is known as Bohemia as it comprised a kingdom of the same name before World War I.

× Michal Ernée, archaeologist, Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, told Live Science, "It's maybe the richest female grave from the whole Únětice cultural region." It is still unclear who the woman was, added Ernée. Also Read: Surprising discovery: Scandinavian small silver coin found in Hungary by metal detectorist As per the radiocarbon dating of her cemetery, the woman seems to have lived between 1880 BC and 1750 BC. The graveyard is located near Mikulovice village in Czech Republic. The area is known as Bohemia as it comprised a kingdom of the same name before World War I.
If you love to spend time in surfing or checking out different things on the phone regularly, it's time to rethink. Researchers have suggested that spending long hours on the phone can shorten the lifespan. The activity can damage the eyes and have an impact on other body processes too, media reports said citing experts at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California state of the US. The exposure of light on the eyes can disrupt the circadian rhythm and worsen chronic disease, the researchers said.

As eyes are constantly exposed to the world, their immune defenses are strong in comparison to other organs. When these defenses become overactive due to the heavy light exposure through the phone every day, it can disrupt internal body processes. This can also harm other organs.

Believe it or not: More screen time on phone can shorten lifespan, say researchers

In the world of dinosaurs, there is a new entry in the form of a bulldog-faced creature. It used to roam in the Sahara Desert around 98 million years ago. This bizarre-looking dinosaur had tiny arms and was as big as a school bus. It has been found in Egypt, the scientists said. At the Bahariya Oasis in Western Desert of Egypt, a vertebra bone of the yet-to-be named dinosaur species was unearthed by experts, as per media reports.

The meat-eating creature seems to have had two legs, small teeth and short arms, the researchers said. When it lived, it seemed to be around 20 feet (six metres) in length. This beast belongs to the lizard-like abelisaurid dinosaur family. It flourished during the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 million years ago). This was the final time period of the age of dinosaurs. They were mainly present in Patagonia and other areas of Gondwana.

A study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University has found a new artificial intelligence (AI) approach to predict whether or not a patient could die of cardiac arrest.

Over 150 chemicals were found to be passed into drinks from plastic bottles by researchers at Brunel University, London. Around 18 of these chemicals were in levels, which exceeded regulations.

The drinks, which were bottled using recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), contained greater concentrations of chemicals than with those bottled using new PET, the researchers said.

It may also suggest that the problems with the recycling process may also be causing contamination.

To remove the potentially harmful chemicals, the researchers are calling for better recycling methods.

The researchers also reviewed around 91 studies conducted around the world to look at chemical contamination from plastic bottles.

Dr Eleni Iacovidou, lecturer, Brunel’s Centre for Pollution Research and Policy, who also led the study, said, “We found these chemicals can come from various sources, such as the catalysts and additives used during production and degradation during PET production, and degradation that can happen across a bottle’s lifecycle.”

The researchers wrote, “This evidence implies that highly recyclable products, such as PET drink bottles, can be inapt for closed-loop recycling when poorly designed, indicating the need for greater adoption of design-for-recycling principles and improvements at the waste-management infrastructure level.”

If researchers of China are to be believed, a microwave machine called 'Relativistic Klystron Amplifier (RKA)’ has been developed by them.

What’s so special about it? The machine can be used to jam or destroy satellites in space, as per researchers. It seems to have the power to burn out sensitive electronics in satellites.

The first evidence of respiratory infection in a dinosaur, which lived over 150 million years ago, has been found by the researchers.

The discovery was made by the palaeontologists when they examined the fossilised neck bones of a diplodocid.

Dr Cary Woodruff, director, palaeontology, Great Plains Dinosaur Museum in Malta, Montana, noticed unusual broccoli-like growths in several neck bones of the dinosaur named Dolly. It happened when Woodruff was inspecting the remains of the dinosaur, which was unearthed over 30 years ago.

“I’ve looked at a lot of sauropod vertebrae and I’ve seen some weird things, but never anything like these structures,” Woodruff told the Guardian.

Woodruff, who was stumped by the finding, put a call out on social media for anyone, who may know what it was.

In the immediate response, a number of scientists joined the investigation. They said the bony growths looked similar to protrusions, which can be caused by respiratory infections in birds of today’s era.

“I imagine that Dolly would have been very much like a sick person: coughing, sneezing, experiencing a fever and out of it. We’ve all had many of the same symptoms, and likely felt just as crummy as Dolly did. I don’t personally know of any fossil I’ve been able to sympathetically relate to more,” Woodruff said.
