India to ban sugar exports amid reports of decline in production: Report

The EU Environmental Agency (EEA) on Monday said that more than 1,200 premature deaths are recorded every year of those aged under 18 across Europe due to air pollution. It added that pollution is also increasing the risk of these youngsters contracting chronic diseases in later stages of their lives.

Even after improvements made recently, the level of key air pollutants in many European countries "remain stubbornly above" World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, especially in central-eastern Europe and Italy, stated the EEA after carrying out a study in almost 30 countries, which includes 27 members of the European Union.

The report did not include the major industrial nations like the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that the continent's overall death tolls could be higher.

Last November, the EEA said that 238,000 people died prematurely due to air pollution in 2020. The death toll includes those in the EU as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.

"Air pollution causes over 1,200 premature deaths per year in people under the age of 18 in Europe and significantly increases the risk of disease later in life," the agency stated.

This was the first study conducted by the agency which focused specifically on children.

"Although the number of premature deaths in this age group is low relative to the total for the European population estimated by EEA each year, deaths early in life represent a loss of future potential and come with a significant burden of chronic illness, both in childhood and later in life," said the agency.

The agency appealed to the authorities to focus on the improvisation of air quality around nurseries, sports facilities, schools and mass transport hubs.

The EU Environmental Agency (EEA) on Monday said that more than 1,200 premature deaths are recorded every year of those aged under 18 across Europe due to air pollution.

ALSO READ | Air pollution speeds up bone loss in postmenopausal women, says study The report did not include the major industrial nations like the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that the continent's overall death tolls could be higher. "After birth, ambient air pollution increases the risk of several health problems, including asthma, reduced lung function, respiratory infections and allergies," noted the report. A recent survey has found that Gen Z workers are not viewed favourably by business owners and managers, primarily due to being difficult to work with.

The survey was conducted by American firm ResumeBuilder with 1344 people as the sample size. It asked people in managerial positions across different US states about their experience of working with those born in 1997 or later.

Surprisingly, nearly half (49 per cent) of the respondents stated it was difficult to work with Gen Z "all or most of the time". Meanwhile, a whopping 79 per cent dubbed them as the most difficult generation to have in the workplace.

59 per cent of respondents added that they have had to sack a Gen Z employee with 20 per cent of the employers firing them within a week of their start date.

Gen Z is the most difficult generation to work with, finds report

A leaked recording suggested that the World Bank staff were apparently asked to give special treatment to the son of the high-ranking official after support was extended by the US Treasury to the $13 billion increase in the organisation's funding, as per a report published in The Guardian.

As per reports, the whistleblower has claimed that the 2018 staff meeting's recording suggests that the colleagues were asked by a senior manager to give special treatment to the son of David Malpass, who is currently the World Bank's president but at that time was serving the US Treasury under Donald Trump.

In the recording, the bank staff can be heard as calling 22-year-old Robert Malpass as a “prince” and “important little fellow”, who is likely to go “running to daddy” if things don't go well.

Campaigners said that the leaked recording can undermine the mission of the World Bank, which includes combating the declining public trust in civic institutions through the promotion of good governance.

As per the report, the staff were informed that Robert was the son of David Malpass, the then undersecretary of the US Treasury, who had played an important role in guiding the World Bank in securing an endorsement for the multibillion-dollar capital injection.

The recordings further suggest that this may not be the first time an important global figure's family member was hired by the international development bank.

“Remember we had a ‘prince’ before … that is a subject for happy hour,” a staff member can be heard as saying. The World Bank stated that the contents revealed in the recording cannot be confirmed but added it was “both false and absurd” to draw a connection between the multibillion-dollar capital increase and an entry-level hire.

“We have a prince that is coming, that is joining us, on 16 July,” said a senior manager, one month before Robert Malpass started working with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which is the World Bank Group's commercial-terms lending arm that lends to private sector businesses.

“I want to forewarn all of you this young, bright person is the son of the undersecretary of the US Treasury, which was beneficial for us in getting the capital increase,” the manager stated.

The manager then explains that Robert, who recently finished his undergraduate in economics from Cornell University, needs to be treated like a “very important little fellow” that might otherwise go “running to daddy” if things went wrong.

“We need to manage his education and we need to manage the lemon,” said the manager, referring to the pending role of Robert in the department.

“So we need to get work out of him, but we also need to make sure that he sees the world,” he can be heard as saying. When staff asks if Malpass intends to return to higher education, the manager replies “annoying[ly], he’s probably going to stay a year, or two years, and then he’s going to move to a hedge fund someplace. But in those two years, we need to make him happy and valuable and we need to teach him and so forth, all right? So that then I can go to his daddy, and then I get some bonus points.”

The whistleblower said that the leaked recording questions the way the World Bank Group is governed and how its largest member state influences it.

“The US, as the leading shareholder of the World Bank Group, is obligated to contribute to better corporate governance of the institution, but failed to do so. Special treatment destroys the morale of employees, especially among those in junior positions who suffer a lack of opportunities of advancement,” the whistleblower said.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition is keenly awaited. Every team is preparing hard for the marquee event which will be held in India entirely. As per a report, the 50-over marquee tournament is set to kick off in early October and will end by mid-November.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, the 2023 ODI WC will commence on October 05 whereas the finale will be held on November 19 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The same report also suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the host of the ten-team tournament, has finalised as many as a dozen venues for the showpiece event.

Apart from Ahmedabad, the shortlisted cities are Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, and Mumbai. It is to be noted that the tournament will be held in the round-robin stage, just like the 2019 edition, and will consist of 48 matches including three knockouts across a 46-day period.

Why the delay from BCCI?

The BCCI has not specified venues for any games as of now, nor the two or three cities where the warm-up encounters will take place. It is learned that the delay in finalising the venues has been due to the threat posed by the monsoon season receding at different points across the nation.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) usually shares the World Cup schedules, at least, a year in the run-up to the event. However, much to the surprise of cricket fans worldwide, it hasn't been the case this time around. The wait has been prolonged as the Indian cricket board is yet to get the necessary clearance from the government.

The BCCI needs to get a tax exemption for hosting the mega tournament, and also acquire visa clearance for Team Pakistan. The Asian giants have not played a bilateral series in India since early 2013 and their last visit to their neighbouring country was during the 2016 T20 World Cup in India.

Humanity's 'vampiric' overconsumption of its 'lifeblood' — water — is increasingly putting the resource at risk, warns the United Nations (UN) in a report published on Wednesday. The report was released just hours ahead of a major summit dealing with the issue. As per the report, about 10 per cent of the "world's population lives in a country where water stress has reached a high or critical level."

The report, which was published by UN-Water and UNESCO, warns that "scarcity is becoming endemic" due to overconsumption and pollution. It adds that global warming will further increase seasonal water shortages in areas with abundant water as well as those already strained.

"If nothing is done, it will be a business-as-usual scenario — it will keep on being between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the population of the world that does not have access to sanitation and roughly 20-25 per cent of the world will not have access to safe water supply," said Richard Connor, lead author of the report while talking to AFP.

Report sounds alarm over humanity's 'vampiric' overconsumption of its 'lifeblood' water

A London Metropolitan police report which reviewed the standards of behaviour and internal culture of the service has unravelled some very disturbing assessments including key findings of institutional racism, sexism and homophobia.

Baroness Casey was appointed in October 2021 to look into the Met internal misconduct system.

This report is an effort to review the Met police after the horrific incident when two years ago in March 2021, one of the department's officer Sarah Everard was abducted, raped and murdered by a serving Metropolitan Police Officer, who was later sentenced to whole life imprisonment for his crime.

According to a report by anti-corruption campaigners Transparency International published on Tuesday (February 7), at least 52,000 properties in the United Kingdom are owned by anonymous investors including some “close to the Kremlin”. This comes despite the British government’s crackdown last year on Russian money which came from shell companies, tax havens, and opaque ownership structures, which were a part of the broader economic sanctions which were imposed on Moscow after its invasion of Ukraine.

The report shows that the total value of all properties put together is more than $8 billion which also includes luxury real estate in London. Additionally, they are also purchased with “suspect funds” via “secretive offshore companies”, the report by Transparency International UK claims. More than 18,000 offshore companies together hold almost 52,000 properties in England and Wales.

It added, that these companies have either “ignored the law altogether or submitted information which makes it impossible for the public to find out who owns them. This includes firms reportedly owned by kleptocrats, oligarchs and individuals subject to sanctions”. Additionally, the report also alleges that more than a fifth of the aforementioned total amount invested into the properties were “suspect funds” from Russia from those who are sanctioned and “close to the Kremlin”.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the British government in August launched the “Register of Overseas Entities” (ROE) which requires foreign companies to declare the ultimate beneficiary of any property owned in the UK. The findings of the report anti-corruption campaigners published are partly based on an analysis of the ROE database which comprises details of the real owners of offshore firms that hold UK property. They also noted that at least half of the 32,440 companies required to declare their ownership have failed to do so.

Another loophole that the report noted was how such companies file information which claims to have no beneficial owners which at least 12 per cent of the firms in question have done, “an issue we previously identified as a potential loophole that would allow offshore companies to sidestep the rules,” said the UK-based organisation.

“Transparency over who really owns property here is vital to addressing Britain's role as a global hub for dirty money,” said Duncan Hames, the group’s policy director, as per AFP. He added, “Our analysis reveals there are far too many companies that could be trying to skirt the rules, not knowing they exist, or ignoring them altogether.” Therefore, Transparency International also called for more government action to “to close loopholes in the law” and active enforcement of reform aimed at providing fewer places for corrupt wealth to hide.

The first-of-its-kind survey on people's experience with violence and harassment at work has surprisingly revealed that sexual harassment while prevalent is not the most reported form of abuse in workplaces; psychological abuse takes the cake.

The survey undertaken as a joint effort between International Labour Organization (ILO), Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) and Gallup found that almost one in five people or 17.9 per cent have experienced psychological abuse and harassment in their workplace. This means that 583 million all over the world have experienced abuse such as insults, threats, bullying or intimidation.

Sexual harassment on the other hand was faced by one in fifteen or 6.3 per cent of people. Globally 205 million employees have faced unwanted sexual touching, comments, pictures, emails or sexual requests.

As with sexual abuse, women were found to have experienced higher incidences of psychological violence and harassment. However, the frequency of psychological abuse was higher for men.

Incidents of physical violence were also found to be prevalent. 277 million or 8.5 per cent have faced abuse in the form of hitting, restraining or spitting.
While both genders faced it, men were more likely to have experienced it, they were also more likely to report the abuse.

The report shows that the risk of experiencing violence and harassment at work is particularly pronounced across certain demographic groups. It found that youth, migrant, and wage and salaried women and men were more likely to face violence and harassment at work, and
this can be particularly true among women.

"For instance, survey results show that young women were twice as likely as young men to have experienced sexual violence and harassment, and migrant women were almost twice as likely as nonmigrant women to report sexual violence and harassment."

However, despite the alarmingly high numbers, only one in two or 54.4 per cent of the victims have shared their negative experiences. Rather than using other informal or formal channels, the victims were more likely to have these conversations with friends and family.

As per ILO, this could be chalked up to due to a "fear of stigmatisation, lack of knowledge of reporting and monitoring systems, “normalisation” of violence and harassment, and re-victimisation or retaliation risks". The most common fears that discouraged people from talking about the abuse were "waste of time" and "fear for their reputation."

The report recommends that prevention mechanisms should be put in place; existing national and workplace mechanisms could be broadened or adapted to prevent abuse in the workplace. Additionally, it advocates increasing awareness of violence and harassment, enhancing the capability of institutions to deliver effective remedies, and supporting and establishing a right-based framework to help combat the problem.

It found that youth, migrant, and wage and salaried women and men were more likely to face violence and harassment at work, and this can be particularly true among women. "For instance, survey results show that young women were twice as likely as young men to have experienced sexual violence and harassment, and migrant women were almost twice as likely as nonmigrant women to report sexual violence and harassment." Rather than using other informal or formal channels, the victims were more likely to have these conversations with friends and family. As per ILO, this could be chalked up to due to a "fear of stigmatisation, lack of knowledge of reporting and monitoring systems, “normalisation” of violence and harassment, and re-victimisation or retaliation risks". The most common fears that discouraged people from talking about the abuse were "waste of time" and "fear for their reputation." The report recommends that prevention mechanisms should be put in place; existing national and workplace mechanisms could be broadened or adapted to prevent abuse in the workplace. Additionally, it advocates increasing awareness of violence and harassment, enhancing the capability of institutions to deliver effective remedies, and supporting and establishing a right-based framework to help combat the problem. 583 million people around the globe experienced psychological abuse at work: Report

According to an analysis of thousands of reef surveys, the world’s coral reef cover has halved since the 1950s. It has been ravaged by global heating, overfishing, pollution and habitat destruction.

From the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to the Saya de Malha Bank in Indian Ocean, coral reefs and the diversity of fish species they support are in a steep decline. The trend looks to continue as the planet continues to heat up in the 21st century.

A review of 14,705 reef surveys in 87 countries has found the effort required to maintain fish catches had surged dramatically since the mid-1990s. It reflects their worsening health, with catches from reef species peaking in 2002 and declining ever since.

Published in the journal ‘One Earth’ on Friday, the study found the diversity of species on reefs has dropped by more than 60% and total reef cover had approximately halved. It has been accompanied by a similar fall in services that the ecosystems provide for human populations.

For millions of people around the world, coral reefs are a vital source of food. For several island indigenous communities, fish is the primary source of protein. The researchers have also said the declines raised fears about future food stability.

Whether it's editorial leadership or role in news coverage, women continue to be severely under-represented in the media industry and taking the brunt of this are women of colour, shows a new report. The report titled 'From Outrage to Opportunity: How to Include the Missing Perspectives of Women of All Colors in News Leadership and Coverage' says that the media industry is persistently dominated by men and "While women in news have it hard, women of colour have it even harder."

"Women are significantly under-represented in editorial leadership roles and news coverage and their voices remain muted in a global news industry still dominated by men. However, substantive opportunities to reshape the status quo are emerging."

The report authored by Luba Kassova had been commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and it "examines the harsh realities facing women of all colours in news leadership and coverage" in six countries: India, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, UK, and the USA.

It found that only one in four or 26 per cent of editors-in-chief across the six counties are women. The figure has fallen from the global average more than a decade ago. Additionally, for every woman, there are between two to 12 male editors-in-chief.

The proportion of female editors-in-chief is highest in South Africa and the UK at 37 per cent and lowest in India: 11 per cent nationally and 8 per cent regionally). In the US the figure stands at 35 per cent, while for Nigeria, and Kenya, they are 18 per cent, and 19 per cent respectively.

Even in high-profile beats like politics, business, foreign affairs, and health the disparity is still there. In health five out of six nations have achieved gender parity, while in business beat only one in every three senior editors is a woman. For politics beat this figure stands at one in every four.

In the UK, no women of colour occupied the most senior editorial decision-making positions in the key high-profile news beats of politics, foreign affairs, and health.

The lack of representation as per the report means that a lot of important stories are being missed. There's a lack of gender angles and low perceived importance of gender stories. Additionally, the perspective of people of colour and micro (human) stories within big political, economic, or health stories are often missed out.

A dominos effect of this disparity is the declining news consumption of women; the report pegs it at about 11-12 per cent lower than men's.

The author Kassova writes that "organisations and leaders often expect to identify a silver bullet, a quick fix that can solve the problem. The truth is: there is no silver bullet". The report instead suggests a series of changes at various news levels like organizational, leadership, and sector levels that can help deal with the issue.
