<p>While Ranveer Singh is doing all it takes to train to play cricket like veteran star Kapil Dev for his next film ‘83’, there’s someone else too who is quite peaked for the film.</p>

<p>Kapil Dev’s daughter, Amiya has turned assistant director for the film as it delves into the historic win for India at 1983 Cricket World Cup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A source close to the production told IANS, “Amiya is just out of college. As of now, it looks like she just wants to explore different things like most bright people do. She is very helpful to us, she knows the subject, she knows all the cricketers and she has access to all of them. She is also very willing to learn.”</p>

<p>Hip-hop music is not new to India but it has surely become mainstream after the release of the widely successful film ‘Gully Boy’ starring Ranveer Singh as a street rapper from Mumbai who makes it big because of his passion for music or as Sky, Kalki Koechlin’s character in the film tells him to follow his “<em>junoon</em> and money will follow”.&nbsp;<br />

While Zoya Akhtar’s film explored Mumbai’s rap culture inspired by the life story of two popular street rappers, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/gully-boy-ranveer-singh-gets-together-with-divine-naezy-for-mere-gully-mein-191979">Divine and Naezy,</a> through their struggles of&nbsp;poverty, crime, family drama and love -- Delhi’s rapper Raftaar wants to shed&nbsp;light on a different narrative. Massively popular for Hindi songs like <em>‘Baby Marvake Maanegi’</em> and <em>‘Gall Goriye’</em>, Raftaar is happy about rap finally getting recognised in India by way of its cinema.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On ‘Gully Boy’ he said, “These guys (Zoya) definitely got inspired from that fact that rappers made a mark for themselves. We are not counted as singers like everybody, we are in a different league, and we are known for different stuff. This movie is for the Bombay hip-hop scene. I come from the Delhi hip-hop scene. The stories, their slangs, they are all different. If a normal guy from Bombay comes to Delhi and starts singing ‘B<em>antai B</em><em>achi</em><em>&nbsp;B</em><em>amai</em><em>’</em>, it’s a Bombay slang, they won't get it. They won't understand what he’s trying to say. So it’s that..the connectivity.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>He continued, “If the entire population would have spoken Hindi then this would have been huge. Problem is, we don't understand the Tamil people up north and they don't understand the Punjabis there. Probably, rappers and singers from both the regions are trying to say something that is necessary for everyone to hear but it’s not happening because of the difference in language and culture in such a small area.”</p>

As the music genre grows popular amongst the youth of the country, Raftaar explains that the one in India is distinctive from the one we have heard from international stars like Eminem and Tupac. He commented, “It's definitely going to be different. Their roots were different like their struggles and ours was different. We initially started off looking at the Western guys and trying to copy them. Most of us kids back then, I am an 88’ born guy, so from my generation&nbsp;everybody either wanted to be a Tupac, Biggie or Eminem.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
He added, “Now the situation has changed. With all these years, all of us doing Hindi, Punjabi and regional, a movie on rap etc-- the idols have changed. Now people have started doing stories that are based out of India. Hip-hop has now become Indian in a way.”<br />

Raftaar does not identify himself with lyrics that only has ‘girls, parties and drugs’, something Bollywood party hip-hop songs are infamous for. Even though he has collaborated previously with artists that made music on similar themes, the rapper of late believes he has diversified. &nbsp;</p>

<p>With songs of ‘Manto’ and ‘Andhadhun’ in his kitty, Raftaar said, “I am a 100 per cent, a socially-conscious singer. I am a very balanced person. I believe in the property of yin and yang. You have to receive the balance in the centre when you are a musician and an entrepreneur, somebody who is in the business of it. I am not doing this just for the art of it.”</p>

Raftaar is currently busy with TV show MTV Roadies. Featuring in the show as a judge along with Neha Dhupia, Rannvijay, Prince Narula, Nikhil Chinappa and real-life hero Sandeep Singh; the rapper has his hands full at the moment. When asked why he opted for an action-oriented show instead of one related to his area of work,&nbsp;he said, “I have never put myself in a box. I started off as an athlete then I went into music. I did ‘Dance India Dance’, ‘Jhalak Dikhlaja’, and now this. I have never wanted to put myself in a frame. These days I am directing small videos for my team. So I would like to try everything that comes my way and is creative.”</p>

Massively popular for Hindi songs like ‘Baby Marvake Maanegi’ and ‘Gall Goriye’, Raftaar is happy about rap finally getting recognised in India by way of its cinema. We are not counted as singers like everybody, we are in a different league, and we are known for different stuff. This movie is for the Bombay hip-hop scene. I come from the Delhi hip-hop scene. The stories, their slangs, they are all different. If a normal guy from Bombay comes to Delhi and starts singing ‘Bantai Bachi Bamai’, it’s a Bombay slang, they won't get it. They won't understand what he’s trying to say. So it’s that..the connectivity.” He continued, “If the entire population would have spoken Hindi then this would have been huge. Problem is, we don't understand the Tamil people up north and they don't understand the Punjabis there. He commented, “It's definitely going to be different. Their roots were different like their struggles and ours was different. We initially started off looking at the Western guys and trying to copy them. Most of us kids back then, I am an 88’ born guy, so from my generation everybody either wanted to be a Tupac, Biggie or Eminem.” He added, “Now the situation has changed. With all these years, all of us doing Hindi, Punjabi and regional, a movie on rap etc-- the idols have changed. Now people have started doing stories that are based out of India. Hip-hop has now become Indian in a way.” Raftaar does not identify himself with lyrics that only has ‘girls, parties and drugs’, something Bollywood party hip-hop songs are infamous for. Even though he has collaborated previously with artists that made music on similar themes, the rapper of late believes he has diversified. With songs of ‘Manto’ and ‘Andhadhun’ in his kitty, Raftaar said, “I am a 100 per cent, a socially-conscious singer. I am a very balanced person. I believe in the property of yin and yang. You have to receive the balance in the centre when you are a musician and an entrepreneur, somebody who is in the business of it. <p>On this, he said, “Now, I am very cognizant that there is this school of thought that one should not mix art with it, or sport with it. These are different realms.”</p>

<p>“But, at the same time, us as artists, or us as sportsmen, or us as spectators, we are not sacrificing the way some of our compatriots are. If there are people in the forces or their near and dear ones, loved ones, what their sentiments are, how they feel about it should have the highest value and highest importance. I am saying if there is even one mother of a soldier who believes that we should not engage, then we should respect that sentiment. I think what they want should be of utmost importance to us,” he explained.</p>

<p>Ranveer also expressed his frustration at the attacks and said, “Gully Boy had come out on the same day as the Pulwama attack. The response to Gully Boy was staggering and overwhelming. I should have been on top of the world. But I was actually down in the dumps. I was disillusioned. I was frustrated and angry.”</p>

<p>Many other actors from the industry supported this decision after being hurt by the attacks carried out on the Indian Army personnel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh made for an ultra-glamorous couple at a recently held awards show. The two bagged the Beautiful Couple Of The Year title as Bollywood celebs looked on and cheered them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While Deepika chose a black saree with what looked like a modern take at the good-old blouse, she kept her makeup nude with skin-coloured lipstick, minimal bronzer and blush on her cheeks. Ranveer, on the other hand, appeared at the awards night in a bright pink and orange, flower-printed three-piece suit and similar hued shades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two struck a pose as they shared some images together, in addition to their individually-styled pics on Instagram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deepika also won the ‘Woman of the Year’ award.</p>

She said 'Moeen is a survivor, a rat, can even survive a volcano. He makes things happen for himself but he doesn’t have any place to go to.' That information was very crucial for me."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma recalls how Ranveer, with whom he had all his scenes, helped him to improvise in certain scenes. "While rehearsing the scene where the boys are at the Benetton store, my lines were simple. '10 lakh ke liye toh Moeen bhai rap karenga, tum log sab baaju waaju hatt jao’. Ranveer said, 'Moeen should break into a gig- which I thought was a great suggestion. So I went back home, prepared something in my head and came for the shoot- now Moeen doesn’t know a word of English, he doesn’t understand a word of what these guys do but understand the rhythm. I am personally a fan of Snoop Dogg, so I decided to mix his style and deliver the lines with some sound effects like 'Waao waao' and everyone had a good laugh over it- which was eventually captured in the scene" recalls the actor. "I met Murad on the sets every day while we were shooting and not Ranveer Singh. I am not exaggerating about this. I saw the energetic Ranveer only at the wrap party. He was inquisitive, underplayed his role and between the shots remained in character- shy and reserved."&nbsp;</p>

You remember every part in all her films. When I read the script of 'Gully Boy', I understood why Moeen is there. <p>The actor who has featured in critically acclaimed films like 'Monsoon Shootout' and 'Raagdesh' in the past, admits that he is selective when it comes to choosing roles. "I have certain filmmakers in mind with whom I want to work, certain stories that they narrate I want to be a part of. Also, I am not very conventional in the way I appear or the way I think, so I ensure I'm with those people who think on the same level. Rather than going into a genre where people don’t trust me with, want to roles where people have faith in me and my abilities."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor though admits that lines between art house and commercial cinema are blurring. "Glad it is happening now, while I am in my primes. I can only be happier. I have grown up on a staple diet of some great cinema from across the world and witnessed some great performances so I’d like to do that. I am playing for the long run. I am here for that. There was a debate on social media about the change in the lyrics of 'Azadi', which musician Dub Sharma created in 2016 after student leader Kanhaiya Kumar made the slogan popular during a protest in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University.&nbsp;<br />

The lyrics had words such as 'Aazadi... Manuvaad se', Aazadi Brahmanvaad se', but these lines are missing in the 'Gully Boy' track which has tweaked the original.&nbsp;Zoya said they changed the lyrics to suit the context of the film and its character.<br />

"My story is about class, about feeling oppressed by your class. It is about economic disparity, the divide between rich and poor. It represents the point of view of my character and his engagement with the society, his socio-economic space and his anger. My film is not about the caste system or JNU."</p>

<p>The director was speaking to a news agency ahead of the film's release. Freedom, Akhtar said, is a word that was used way before JNU and will continue to be used.&nbsp;<br />

"It has been used for women's movement, for caste disparity, against the system and whatever the oppressed community feels strongly about... But it would have been fake on my part if I had just taken the original song and monetised it."&nbsp;<br />

"Frankly, there is no voice in the mainstream that represents the urban youth and that's what attracted me to the story. Their rap is conscious of its space and it is conscious of where it exists. It is honest, truthful and personal. They are the artistes who speak about their socio-economic space, about the system and how it treats them," Zoya told PTI in an interview.<br />

The 46-year-old says she grew up listening to classic hip-hop artistes such as Tupac Shakur, 50 Cent and Eminem but the mainstream Indian hip-hop scene never attracted her until she chanced upon a track by Divine and Naezy.<br />

The story of the two rappers from the chawls of Kurla in Mumbai serves as the inspiration for 'Gully Boy', played by Ranveer Singh.<br />

Zoya says she realised she could use hip-hop to tell a larger story about urban youth and their frustrations.<br />

Zoya says she does not concern herself with how people bracket her as a filmmaker. As a filmmaker, she is drawn to conflicts.<br />

"At the end of my life, I want to have a body of work that has everything. My next job is for Amazon and again it is about rich people, wedding planning. I want to do all kind of films. I don't want to be bracketed into one kind of cinema and if somebody does that, then it is on them," she said.&nbsp;<br />

According to Zoya, if you are good at your job and resonate emotionally with people and there are conflicts that you can connect to, your work will find its audience. "Ultimately, we are all human beings and the rest is just the backdrop,"&nbsp;she said.<br />

<p>"Gully Boy", directed by India's Zoya Akhtar, tells the fictional tale of Murad (Singh), a student who lives in a slum and ends up temporarily substituting for his injured father as chauffeur for a wealthy family.</p>

<p>He discovers a talent for rapping and uses it to vent his anger about poverty and the chasm between rich and poor, writing lines about babies cowering next to skyscrapers and wealthy people's cars being big as poor people's homes.</p>

<p>"This film is something that takes a genre of music that has essentially been underground in India so far and brings it to the mainstream," Singh said.</p>

<p>"I want this to be the beginning of something because I really think Hindustani hip-hop is a revolution. It's more than just music. It's a musical and social revolution," he said.</p>

<p>Singh said he grew up listening to rap music and it "feels amazing" to have recorded five songs for the film's soundtrack.</p>

<p>The coming-of-age film depicts a young man who refuses to accept what his father has taught him - that he cannot afford big dreams and should get a stable office job - and who defies class conventions by secretly dating Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a doctor's daughter.</p>

<p>Safeena is confident and violently attacks potential love rivals while Murad is a more sensitive and reserved character.</p>

<p>"Traditionally our films and gender dynamics are structured very differently," Singh said. "So that's an aspect of our film that we're very proud of."</p>

<p>He said he initially wanted to become an actor to be a virtuous hero with big muscles who beats other men up and stands up for what is right, but Akhtar had brought out a part of him on screen that was usually reserved for his friends and family.</p>

<p>"Zoya kind of very literally and metaphorically peels away all of those layers to kind of tap into a very real, very authentic side of me ... a little bit more quiet, more reserved, more introverted and more internally feeling sensitive, vulnerable," he said.</p>

<p>The movie - shot in Mumbai - features slum dwellers picking through rubbish, abandoned children preparing drugs to earn their keep and homes made from corrugated iron alongside wealthy Indians attending posh parties, modern skyscrapers and a group of camera-wielding British tourists visiting a slum.</p>
