<p>India made their presence felt in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics as the contingent led by PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal was given a warm reception on Friday (July 26). The Indian contingent which arrived in the traditional wears of saree for women athletes and salvar kurta for men athletes arrived 84th in the alphabetical order in the opening ceremony. Unlike other Summer Olympic Games, this year’s Summer Games saw the contingent arrive in boats on the River Seine.</p>

<h2><strong>Sindhu, Kamal lead India’s contingent</strong></h2>

<p>Having arrived with a 117-member contingent at the Paris Olympics, India were given the warmest of welcomes in the French capital despite rain playing its part. The Indian contingent was joined by 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang who was the chef-de-mission for India. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief PT Usha was also in the town but was not on the ship that carried the Indian contingent.</p>

<p>This year at the Olympics, a total of 117 athletes will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics from India. The Indian squad is made of 70 male and 47 women athletes across 16 sports disciplines. The contingent also includes 140 support staff and officials.</p>

<p>Athletics has the largest representation from India with 29 athletes followed by shooting at 21 and hockey at 19 at the 2024 Paris Olympics.</p>

<p>India has won 35 medals at the Olympics and they found most success in hockey where they won 12 medals, mostly due to the men's team efforts from 1928-1936 and 1948-64.</p>

In a first-of-a-kind event, over 10,000 Olympic athletes will travel on around 100 boats, cruise&nbsp;on&nbsp;the river Seine and pass through some iconic destinations, including the Notre Dame, Pont des Arts, Pont Neuf and more.</p>

<p>The historic opening ceremony might last over three hours, beginning from the Austerlitz Bridge beside the Jardin des Plantes and ending at the Trocadéro, where the final shows get underway.</p>

<p>After a change in Olympics protocol in 2020 (held in 2021), every country participating in the Olympics must name a male and a female flag bearer. In the Tokyo Olympics, Mary Kom (boxing) and former hockey captain Manpreet Singh were named as flag bearers. This year Sharath Kamal was named the flag bearer in the male contingent back in March, but the announcement of the female bearer was delayed.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Mary Kom’s refusal to take the honour of Chef-de-Mission meant, the deputy in charge Gagan Narang would now take charge during the Paris Olympics. Like Mary Kom, Narang also won an Olympic medal when he shot bronze in the London Games in 2012 in a 10m pistol.</p>

<p>"I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," Usha added.</p>

<p>India will be sending close to 120 athletes to Paris and will expect to break their previous record for most medals and strike gold in multiple events.</p>

<p>Ever since returning from a five-month long injury layoff, Sindhu has struggled to string together a series of wins in a week, resulting in a title-less streak this season.</p>

<p>A former world number 2 Sindhu, who had suffered a stress fracture on her ankle during her title-winning run at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, currently has 49,480 points from 14 tournaments.</p>

<p>This is her lowest ranking in over a decade. The last time she was ranked 17th was in January, 2013. She has been inside the top 10 since 2016, having reached a career-best world number 2 in April, 2016.</p>

<p>Sindhu will hope she finds her footing quickly in the Olympic qualification period which ends in April next year, especially after getting the services of Indonesian coach Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, a former All England champion.</p>

<p>The 2019 World Champion, Sindhu had reached the final of the Madrid Spain Masters, her best finish this season. She registered a semifinal finish at Malaysia Masters and Canada Open but made a quarterfinal exit in the next event at the US Open. She is now in Korea for a super 500 tournament.</p>

<p>Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu defeated her American opponent of Indian origin Disha Gupta while Lakshya Sen began his men's singles campaign with a convincing win over Finland's Kalle Koljonen at the US Open Super 300 badminton tournament here. In another men's singles match, S Sankar Subramanian, who had entered the main draw of the tournament after two tough qualifying matches, defeated his tricky Irish opponent Nhat Nguyen 21-11, 21-16 in the first round.</p>

<p>However, B Sai Praneeth lost to 23-year-old world No. 7 Chinese player Li Shi Feng after a gruelling match that lasted three games. Sindhu defeated Diksha 21-15, 21-12 in just 27 minutes to enter the second round, while Lakshya beat his Finnish opponent 21-8, 21-16 in less than 30 minutes.</p>

<p>India's star badminton player PV Sindhu has brought many laurels to the country. From winning two Olympic medals to topping the rankings, Sindhu has added lots of feathers to her cap. But the past few years have not been special for India's star badminton star. The Two-time Olympic medalist has consistently failed to win big tournaments and this has impacted her ranking as well. The latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings were released recently and Sindhu has suffered a major setback in her career ranking. Sindhu has slipped three places to be at the 15th position in the rankings.</p>

<p>PV Sindhu, who dropped out of the top 10 in April this year, has 51,070 points from 13 tournaments. She will next participate in the Canadian Open Super 500 tournament this week.</p>

Zhang took a 5-0 lead in the first game before allowing Sindhu to make a combeack. After a&nbsp;11-10 lead, Sindhu eventually won the first game but went down in the second one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the deciding game, it was evenly poised at 12-12 before Sindhu prevailed on top in the match which went down to the wire. She ultimately claimed the third game 22-20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lastly, Prannoy beat Kenta Nishimoto after he was made to work hard in the entire game. In the first game, the Japanese gave a tough fight before losing 23-25. He came back in the second game, winning 21-18 but Prannoy had the last laugh; clinching the decider 21-13.</p>

<p>Towards the end, Nishimoto lost the momentum and Prannoy was in no mood to give away any&nbsp;freebies.</p>

Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikanth, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters 2023 badminton championships with contrasting wins in their respective Round of 16 encounters in women`s and men`s singles respectively, here on Thursday.<br />

Prannoy, ranked 9th in the latest BWF Rankings, continued his brilliant run in the BWF World Tour Super 500 event in the Malaysian capital, stunning All England champion Li Shifeng of China with a superb come-from-behind victory in three games on Court 1 at Axiata Arena here.<br />

Prannoy, who had started his campaign here with a hard-fought 16-21, 21-14, 21-13 win against sixth-seeded Hou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei on Wednesday, defeated his Chinese opponent 13-21, 21-16, 21-11 in Round of 16. He will face Japan`s Kenta Nishimoto in a last-8 encounter on Friday.<br />

In the same men`s singles, Kidambi Srikanth, who won the silver medal in the 2021 World Championship, stunned Thailand`s eighth seed, Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-19, 21-19 in a 45-minute clash in the men`s singles Round of 16.<br />

Double Olympic medallist Sindhu, the sixth seed here, had it a bit easy in the women`s singles pre-quarterfinals clash as she comfortably got the better of Aya Ohori of Japan 21-16, 21-11 in 40 minutes.<br />

Sindhu, who won a silver at Rio Olympics in 2016 and followed that up with a bronze in Tokyo 2020, will lock horns with China`s Zhang Yi Man to book a spot in the semifinals.<br />

However, former World Championship bronze medallist Lakshya Sen was sent packing in the pre-quarterfinals by Hong Kong`s Ng Ka Long Angus, the 28-year-old ranked 14th in the BWF Rankings. Lakhsya, who is ranked 22 in the latest singles rankings, went down 21-14, 21-19.</p>

<p>The day belonged to Prannoy, who caused a major upset by getting the better of the reigning All-England champion. Prannoy, who helped India win the Thomas Cup title last year, lost the first game to the in-from Chinese star, who surged ahead from an early 4-2 lead to open a 9-2 gap. The Chinese player maintained a 4-5 points advantage as he went on to win the first game 21-13.<br />

The second game was closely fought and after Prannoy and Li Shifeng exchanged the lead twice, the Indian opened up a 6-3 lead. The Chinese shuttler narrowed the gap to one point before Prannoy won a few points in succession to make it 11-7. But Shifeng tied the scores at 11-all before Prannoy grabbed the lead again at 14-13 before making it 18-13 and went on to win the game and take the match into the decider.<br />

In the third game, after the initial skirmishes, the 30-year-old Indian right-hander opened a gap from 4-4 to 8-5 before winning eight consecutive points to make it 16-5. Shifeng could not recover from that and he narrowed the gap to 16-9, Prannoy went on to win the game 21-11 and sealed a memorable win in the 70 minutes encounter.<br />
<br />
The two players engaged in 103 rallies in the match of which Prannoy won 55 and the 23-year-old Chinese won 48.</p>

Badminton Asia Championships: PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy advance to QFs

<p>Indian shuttler and Olympic medalist PV Sindhu dropped out of the top 10 of the women's singles Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings for the first time since November 2016.</p>

<p>The two-time Olympic medalist, who had won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics and Bronze in Tokyo 2020 Olympics, fell down two places to the 11th spot on Tuesday, as per Olympics.com. Sindhu made it to the top ten for the first time in August 2013 and has been amongst the elite shuttlers worldwide since November 2016. The former world champion's best ranking is world number 2 on April 2017.</p>

<p>The 27-year-old has struggled for form this season since her comeback from an injury following her gold medal triumph in women's singles competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.</p>

<p>She recently parted ways with her South Korean coach Park Tae-sang and made her return to the court at the Malaysian Open and Indian Open this year. However, these two outings were extremely forgettable as she bowed out of both competitions in the first round itself.</p>

<p>She was a part of the bronze medal-winning Indian team at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship 2023 back in February at Doha. Later, she skipped Thailand Masters, Indonesia Masters and German Open as well.</p>

<p>She will be seen in action at Madrid Masters 2023 on Wednesday, facing Switzerland's Jenjira Stadelmann in the round of 32. She had beat her Stadelmann at the Swiss Open 2023.</p>

<p>In the men's singles player, HS Prannoy retained his status as the top-ranked player in the country, positioned at number eight in the men's singles competition while Kidambi Srikanth slipped to 21st place. Commonwealth Games champion in men's singles, Lakshya Sen is at number 25.</p>
