The independence square at the centre of the city was packed to the brim. Never before has Belarus seen such a massive campaign. It was a&nbsp;freedom march and a&nbsp;campaign to oust the president who has ruled over Belarus since&nbsp;independence.

The protesters were dressed in red and white -&nbsp;&nbsp;the colours of the Opposition. They were&nbsp;also waving the flag of the Opposition. According to a report,&nbsp;at least 200,000 people took to the streets.

A week back, Belarus had its presidential election. The results were announced and Alexander Lukashenko staked claim to a sixth term as the president of Belarus even as several people disputed the&nbsp;re-election which&nbsp;includes the Opposition in Belarus.

Opposition candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanoskaya had to run for her life. She had taken over as a candidate from her imprisoned husband. After the result, she has been living in exile in Lithuania.&nbsp;As Belarus protested, she sent a&nbsp;message to the people asserting&nbsp;that she is ready to lead.

Europe at large is standing up for Belarusians and against Alexander Lukashenko.&nbsp;Over the weekend&nbsp;several prominent cities in Europe joined the freedom campaign from a distance. There were protests in five European cities, alongside Minsk.

With European leaders greenlighting major sanctions, the situation has been&nbsp;getting out of hand for Alexander Lukashenko who has ruled over Belarus for 26 years. But the man&nbsp;who is known as the last dictator of Europe is adamant.

His supporters held a counter-protest. It was overshadowed by the freedom march. Lukashenko made a speech&nbsp;rejecting the demand for a new election.

On Monday, he took a helicopter to a factory in Minsk where&nbsp;more than five thousand workers were marching in protest&nbsp;but Lukashenko remained defiant.

Lukashenko has turned to Russia for help. He reportedly over the weekend spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin twice. He is already blaming a foreign hand for the protests against him and Russia is happy to help Lukashenko keep power.

The Kremlin has said that it is ready to send military help for “comprehensive military assistance” which&nbsp;means deployment of Russian soldiers and military assets.&nbsp;

The Kremlin reportedly is not to keen on getting its skin in the game just yet. Moscow has adopted a “wait and watch attitude” for now.&nbsp;

Last month, 33 men were arrested in Belarus as&nbsp;Lukashenko alleged they were Russian mercenaries trying to stir up trouble ahead of the elections.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the failure of the US&nbsp;resolution "again showed that unilateralism has no popular support, and hegemonistic behaviour will not succeed".

The United States needed to end its unilateral sanctions and adopt a rational attitude, returning to the "correct path" of respecting the Iran nuclear agreement and Security Council decisions, Zhao added.

"As for the Russian proposal for a teleconference summit on the Iran nuclear issue, China expresses its welcome and appreciation," he said.

City authorities estimated around 6,500 people had taken part. One local media outlet put the number at up to 20,000, while other outlets and opposition activists said upwards of 50,000 had attended and that it was the biggest protest of its kind so far.

"Give us our Furgal back," said a local businesswoman called Viktoria. "This is our choice."

The protests have highlighted anger among some over what they see as policies emanating from detached Moscow-based authorities.

President Vladimir Putin named a new acting governor to head Russia`s Far Eastern region of Khabarovsk on Monday after the previous regional head was arrested on murder charges, sparking a wave of protests.

At least 10,000 people demonstrated in Khabarovsk on Saturday to demand Moscow release Sergei Furgal, a member of the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) who won election in 2018 after beating a rival from the ruling pro-Putin party.

Furgal, born in Russia`s Far East, was detained on July 9 and flown to Moscow to face charges over the murder and attempted murder of multiple businessmen 15 years ago. He denies wrongdoing.

Protests broke out soon afterwards and have continued for over a week. Their size is unusual for Russia`s regions, as is the fact that the authorities have not yet moved to break them up.

Putin on Monday formally removed Furgal from his post and appointed Mikhail Degtyaryov, 39, a lawmaker and also an LDPR member, to take over as the acting head of the region, according to a decree published on the Kremlin website.

The Kremlin has so far publicly played down the protests which have highlighted anger among some in the Far East over what they see as policies emanating from detached federal authorities located in Moscow seven time zones to the west.

The unrest also comes less than three weeks after Russians voted to back a set of sweeping reforms clearing the way for Putin to run for two more presidential terms, potentially remaining in the Kremlin until 2036 rather than stepping down in 2024.

Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose allies in the region have backed the demonstrations, cast Degtyaryov as a detached Kremlin appointee whose selection he predicted would fail to appease protesters.

The rally was unauthorised and reportedly was blocking Moscow traffic. In the videos shown on the local news channels, the riot police and protetsors were seen clashing and some images also showed the riot police dragging the protestors to the police vans, before detaining them.

The Kremlin has hailed the landslide victory as a triumph for Putin, but critics said the vote was illegal and illegitimate. An independent monitoring group said the vote was deeply flawed.

"People felt with their hearts that what was on offer (the amendments) ... was in demand and what the country needed," Putin said in his first public comments on the vote.

"In general, the results of the vote showed a high level of unity in society on key questions that are of national significance," Putin said.

Other changes in the reform package grant former presidents immunity from prosecution, enshrine a reference in the constitution to God and define marriage as a union of a man and a woman.

Putin also used a meeting with officials broadcast on state television to try to poke fun at the US embassy in Moscow for flying the rainbow flag as part of LGBT pride celebrations.

Earlier, the parade was scheduled on May 9, 2020. But it was delayed due to the outbreak. On May 8, 1945, Germany signed the instrument of surrender, signifying the end of the Second World War for Russia.

Over 40,000 Red Army soldiers and more than 1,800 military vehicles took part in the first ever Victory Parade. Troops returning from the frontline were greeted by joyous crowds showering flowers on them.

The Kremlin has used the auspicious day to push for Putin’s legitimacy as the Russian leader, many critics believe.

Many believe that the event was pushed back not because of the virus, but owing to the referendum on the&nbsp;Russian constitution. As part of this, over 200 provisions will be amended. However, the most controversial amendment would allow Putin to clench on to his presidency indefinitely.

Currently, the Russian president is limited by terms. During his first stint as president, Putin had two terms, for four years each, from 2000 to 2008.&nbsp;After this, he made way for his trusted deputy and became the prime minister.&nbsp;In 2012 he took office again, and this time his terms lasted for six years each, with his current term slated to end in 2024.

What many critics are calling a “constitutional coup” will enable him to stay in power at least until 2036, which would make him Russia’s longest-serving leader.&nbsp;Stalin currently holds the record, with a 29-year term.

The world’s longest serving leaders include Fidel Castro in Cuba with 49 years, followed by Chiang Kai Shek in Taiwan for 47 years, and Kim Il Sung of North Korea who held power for 46 years.

Many analysts have pointed out fears of the referendum being democratic only on paper. They believe this “symbolic referendum” is strategically designed to eliminate threats.

Russia will soon be in a position to counter hypersonic arms deployed by other countries, President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday, adding that Moscow was ahead of the United States in developing new types of weapons.

Hypersonic glide vehicles can steer an unpredictable course and manoeuvre sharply as they approach impact. They also follow a much flatter and lower trajectory than ballistic missiles.

Washington and Moscow have been expanding their defence capabilities as some Cold War-era arms control agreements collapsed during worsening of Russia`s ties with the West.

Last year Russia deployed its first hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles, while the Pentagon has a goal of fielding hypersonic capabilities in the early to mid-2020s.

"It's very likely that we will have means to combat hypersonic weapons by the time the world`s leading countries have such weapons," Putin was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency.

While Russia and the United States had broadly the same number of nuclear weapons, Putin said Moscow was ahead in advanced arms development.

Russia will soon be in a position to counter hypersonic arms deployed by other countries, President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday, adding that Moscow was ahead of the United States in developing new types of weapons. Hypersonic glide vehicles can steer an unpredictable course and manoeuvre sharply as they approach impact. They also follow a much flatter and lower trajectory than ballistic missiles. Last year Russia deployed its first hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles, while the Pentagon has a goal of fielding hypersonic capabilities in the early to mid-2020s. "It's very likely that we will have means to combat hypersonic weapons by the time the world`s leading countries have such weapons," Putin was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency. While Russia and the United States had broadly the same number of nuclear weapons, Putin said Moscow was ahead in advanced arms development.
