Peruvian President Dina Boluarte refused to step down amid increasing protests across the country as protesters demanded her resignation and a trade union leader was arrested for his alleged ties with the Maoist rebels.&nbsp;The country's ousted president Pedro Castillo's supporters have been marching across the streets and barricading roads in the entire country since December, raising their demands for Boluarte's resignation and fresh elections.&nbsp;

In a speech aired on state TV on Friday night, President Boluarte said, "Some voices that have come from the violent and radical factions are asking for my resignation, provoking the population into chaos, disorder and destruction.”&nbsp;

"I will not resign. My commitment is with Peru,” she added.&nbsp;

The president said that the protests have turned violent multiple times which have led to the killing of 42 people amid clashes with security personnel, as one police officer lost his life after he was burned alive along with a vehicle. So far, hundreds of people have been injured.&nbsp;

"I cannot stop reiterating my regret for the deaths of Peruvians in these protests. I apologise for this situation,” she stated.&nbsp;

However, the president said that the constitutional assembly won't be called as protesters have been demanding, as she emphasised the difficulties faced by Chile in drafting and approving the new Constitution.&nbsp;

"That cannot happen overnight," said Boluarte. On Friday, which was the unrest's tenth consecutive day, Rocio Leandro, the Ayacucho region's union leader, was arrested by the police.&nbsp;

Demonstrators marched with Peru’s national red-and-white flag in Lima and Arequipa to show solidarity with Castillo, demanding his release and the current President Dina Boluarte’s resignation. They also protested against Congress’ closure and changes to the constitution.

Early in the evening, there were still 35 blockage points across the nation, but there had been no reports of altercations with the police who had barred entry to Congress, Reuters reported.

Amid the escalating tensions in Peru over the political turmoil, authorities announced that trains to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu had been suspended, a day after 2,062 visitors were evacuated.

As per local reports, Prime Minister Alberto Otarola had earlier urged&nbsp;for peaceful protests. Defence Minister Jorge Chavez claimed that authorities “scrupulously compiled” with Boluarte's directives to use force, local news outlet RPP reported.

Peru has been going through a political crisis for years now. Castilo was elected in July 2021 but the chaos began&nbsp;when in December he announced he was dissolving Congress and replacing it with an “exceptional emergency government.” The announcement was widely condemned by many, dubbing it a coup attempt.

After attempting to illegally dissolve Congress and restructure the judiciary, Castilo was removed from office. He was impeached the same day and his then-vice president Bolurate was sworn in as the new president later that day.

Peru police use tear gas to disperse protesters; political turmoil continues

Thousands of Israeli people took to the streets in Tel Aviv, late Saturday, in protest against the new government’s policies which is now led&nbsp;by the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This comes days&nbsp;after his administration’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin unveiled his plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system, which opponents and critics say threaten democracy and freedom.&nbsp;

What is the legal reform plan about?

On Wednesday, the country’s justice minister announced the new government’s long-promised overhaul of the judicial system which is also supposedly directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme court. Additionally, critics have said that it will affect the checks and balances as well as undermine democratic institutions by giving absolute power to the ruling party coalition, reported Associated Press.&nbsp;

The legal reforms would also limit the power and authority of the High Court of Justice to block legislation or government decisions which would otherwise be deemed discriminatory or undemocratic. However, it is the feature of the plan which has garnered controversy and it is the Override Clause which would simply allow a majority of the Members of Knesset (MK) to overrule decisions by the High Court.&nbsp;

Additionally, the government will also gain control over the selection process of judges and reportedly eliminate ministry legal advisers who are appointed by and report to the attorney general into political appointments controlled entirely by the government. Currently, the Judicial Appointments Committee includes lawmakers, from both the government and the opposition, and judges and representatives from the Israel Bar Association.

Furthermore, given that Israel does not have a written constitution, the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government remain&nbsp;weak since the ruling government typically holds a majority in the Parliament.&nbsp;

This makes the Supreme Court the only institution to limit the government’s power and by challenging legislation passed by a parliamentary majority, the proposed reform would remove this roadblock for the Netanyahu government. Notably, the court cannot arbitrarily dismiss legislation passed by the parliament unless they hinder one of the Basic Laws of Israel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Netanyahu government is said to be the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israel’s over seven-decade history. It recently came under fire after its National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the disputed holy site in Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa mosque which drew widespread condemnation.&nbsp;

Additionally, prior to the government’s swearing-in, the coalition agreements called for legislation that would allow service providers to refuse service on the grounds of religious beliefs which many say would be legalising discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and other targeted sections in Israel.&nbsp;

This comes after the incumbent PM Netanyahu won the elections in November and took office last month with his right-wing allies who now hold key ministerial positions in the Israeli government.&nbsp;

What happened at the protests?

The protest was reportedly led by some lawmakers from Israeli parliament, the Knesset, where the local media report citing organisers said that over 10,000 protesters gathered for the rally in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. According to media reports, protesters waved Israel and LGBTQ+ pride flags and some were seen with a Palestinian flag with placards that read, “The settler government is against me” and “Democracy in danger” and even a banner that read “crime minister”.&nbsp;

The demonstrators affiliated with&nbsp;Standing Together group and other organisations marched toward the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and held a rally there where leaders gave speeches while others carried out a torchlight march through the city streets, reported the Times of Israel. Meanwhile, others also called for peace and co-existence between Jews and Arab residents of the country.&nbsp;

Several prominent activist groups in the country even warned the government that these reforms would not be passed without unprecedented civil resistance. “This evening, friends, we have built a new democratic camp,” said the CEOs of an NGO, Breaking the Silence, Yael Lotan and Avner Gvaryahu, addressing the protestors on Saturday.&nbsp;

They added, “One that includes Jews and Arabs, men and women, straight people and LGBTQ people, secular and religious, united against one evil government and for the sake of a better future in this place,” reported the local media.&nbsp;

Speaking about his time as a justice the 86-year-old said that he tried not to be overly activist nor overly conservative while delivering verdicts and took into account Israel’s history, Zionism and the country’s security needs and that he was sorry to be depicted as “the enemy of the people”, reported the Times of Israel.&nbsp;

The legal reforms would also limit the power and authority of the High Court of Justice to block legislation or government decisions which would otherwise be deemed discriminatory or undemocratic. However, it is the feature of the plan which has garnered controversy and it is the Override Clause which would simply allow a majority of the Members of Knesset (MK) to overrule decisions by the High Court. Prominent opposition leader and Bolivian city, Santa Cruz governor, Luis Fernando Camacho, was detained by the country’s police on Wednesday, after being charged with “terrorism”. The incident has since sparked protests and marked a major escalation between President Luis Arce’s government and Camacho’s supporters.&nbsp;

The former right-wing presidential candidate and 43-year-old, Camacho has reportedly been under investigation for a number of allegations including his potential involvement in the ouster of former president Evo Morales in 2019, which the South American nation’s government categorises as a “coup”, as well as inciting unrest in Santa Cruz last year.&nbsp;

The public prosecutor’s office without giving additional details on the arrest has said that Camacho has been detained and charged with “terrorism” for his alleged involvement in the ouster of Morales.&nbsp;

Camacho’s allies and lawmakers Paola Aguirre and Erwin Bazan alleged that firearms were used during the arrest, while the Santa Cruz government have reportedly described his arrest as “kidnapping” following a “completely irregular police operation.”&nbsp;

According to the city’s government, “The operation to kidnap the governor was carried out in the streets near his home, as he was returning from his duties”. Meanwhile, Camacho’s supporters have taken to the street, torched the regional prosecutor's office in Santa Cruz, and blocked roads with stones, trees, and cars demanding his release.&nbsp;

Additionally, the protestors had also blocked two airports in the city, in a bid to stop his transfer to La Paz but were ultimately unsuccessful, however, several flights at both airports had to be suspended. As protests erupted in Santa Cruz, yet again, long queues were witnessed as people rushed to stock up on food and gas fearing road blockages.&nbsp;

“We inform the Bolivian people that the Bolivian police executed an arrest warrant against Luis Fernando Camacho”, said the country’s interior minister Carlos Eduardo Del Castillo. Furthermore, the official also indicated that Camacho was taken to La Paz, the Bolivian administrative capital, for questioning in relation to the allegations.&nbsp;

Subsequently, he also took to Twitter, to assure people that the Santa Cruz governor’s health is “stable” and he is undergoing medical assessment rejecting the claims that he had been injured.

If convicted, Camacho could face at least 15 to 20 years in jail, said a report by Reuters, citing a constitutional lawyer Israel Quino on state media. The arrest follows weeks of unrest in the South American city of Santa Cruz, which has reportedly been led by Camacho against Arce’s administration.&nbsp;
