This led to scuffle as police tried to clear off the protesters.

However, the prime minister refuted all such claims.

President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday proposed a compromise but it was promptly rejected by the cabinet.&nbsp;

As per Herzog's outline, new Basic Laws, Israel's quasi-constitutional laws, are to be put on hold until the whole outline is put into effect. The plan also calls for no alteration in the roles between the branches, the Attorney-General and legal adviser, and the judiciary.

In a joint press conference on Thursday, the leaders of the opposition parties displayed their support for Herzog's plan. "The offer is not perfect," said former premier Yair Lapid. "It is not what we wanted, but it is a fair compromise that allows us to live together."

"We won't give up," one demonstrator told AFP news agency. "There's still hope that the reform can be revoked."

Another protester told Reuters that pushing the legislation through without a vote was "a denial of democracy... a total denial of what has been happening in the streets for several weeks".

Special constitutional powers were used by the French government to force through the pension reforms bill amid chaos in parliament as radical left MPs started singing La Marseillaise loudly to stop French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne from speaking.

A last-minute decision was taken by French President Emmanuel Macron to avoid a parliamentary vote and pass the legislation to increase the pension age from 62 to 64.

Minutes before the country's MPs were to cast vote in the lower house, Macron was busy conducting frantic meetings with senior political figures, and in minutes, he decided to use special powers and not take the risk of voting, in which he had chances of losing.&nbsp;

Resign!” at Borne, and radical left party France Unbowed's members sang the national anthem loudly so that Borne is not able to speak and the session gets suspended.

Speaking at the parliament, Borne said that they will push the bill through because the government cannot afford to “gamble the future of our pensions”.

The bill was earlier adopted by the Senate on Thursday. However, since the right-wing opposition MPs present in the National Assembly were reluctant to support Macron, the government had a fair chance of facing defeat in the lower house.

"We can't take the risk of seeing 175 hours of parliamentary debate come to nothing," Borne said while announcing the move.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen said, "It's a total failure for the government. From the beginning the government fooled itself into thinking it had a majority."

As per the polls, around two-thirds of citizens in France oppose the pension overhaul.

An old black Mercedes led the convoy. It was a reference to the then-Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s official car, a replica of which the Israeli commandos used to reach the hijacked plane.

Operation Entebbe was initiated after German and Palestinian hijackers took control of an Air France jet from Tel Aviv for Paris. The hijackers diverted the plane to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda.

They&nbsp;presented their demands to Israel for&nbsp;the release of a sizable number of Palestinian detainees in exchange for the release of the 247 hostages.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to Germany Wednesday as anti-government protesters plan to block traffic around Ben-Gurion International Airport in an effort to disrupt the trip.

According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, over 20,000 people who participated in widespread anti-government protests have been pardoned. This comes months after tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country in protest following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who passed away after she was detained by authorities for her alleged breach of the dress code.

The announcement was made by Iran’s judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, on Monday (March 13) during which he said, “So far 82,000 people have been pardoned, including 22,000 people who participated in (the) protests”, reported Reuters, citing IRNA news agency. However, no further details regarding the pardons like the period for which they have been granted to the protesters or whether or not they had actually been charged with an offence were mentioned.&nbsp;

This also comes ahead of the celebrations of Nowruz or Persian New Year in Iran which will be held next week. Additionally, the state media had also earlier hinted at the possibility of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pardoning protesters ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.&nbsp;

There has been a conflicting number regarding the number of people detained by the regime during the protests that began last September. However, the Iranian authorities had admitted that they arrested “tens of thousands” for participating in the countrywide demonstrations, earlier this year. On Monday, Ejehi said a total of 82,656 prisoners and those facing charges had been pardoned which included 22,628 who had been arrested during&nbsp;the demonstrations, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The judicial chief also reportedly said that those pardoned had not committed theft or violent crimes. Notably, the figures released during Monday’s announcement are more than what some rights groups and media reports had estimated. According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, over 20,000 people who participated in widespread anti-government protests have been pardoned. This comes months after tens of thousands of people took to the streets across the country in protest following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who passed away after she was detained by authorities for her alleged breach of the dress code.

The announcement was made by Iran’s judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, on Monday (March 13) during which he said, “So far 82,000 people have been pardoned, including 22,000 people who participated in (the) protests”, reported Reuters, citing IRNA news agency. However, no further details regarding the pardons like the period for which they have been granted to the protesters or whether or not they had actually been charged with an offence were mentioned. This also comes ahead of the celebrations of Nowruz or Persian New Year in Iran which will be held next week. Additionally, the state media had also earlier hinted at the possibility of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pardoning protesters ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. There has been a conflicting number regarding the number of people detained by the regime during the protests that began last September. However, the Iranian authorities had admitted that they arrested “tens of thousands” for participating in the countrywide demonstrations, earlier this year. On Monday, Ejehi said a total of 82,656 prisoners and those facing charges had been pardoned which included 22,628 who had been arrested during the demonstrations, reported the Associated Press. The judicial chief also reportedly said that those pardoned had not committed theft or violent crimes. Notably, the figures released during Monday’s announcement are more than what some rights groups and media reports had estimated. Since the first Aurat March in Pakistan, which was taken out in 2018 in Karachi, the women of the country have been holding the march annually in various cities to mark the International Women’s Day on March 8 every year.&nbsp;

As the world marks this special day to voice support for women in their&nbsp;fight for their rights, Wednesday in Pakistan, started with videos surfacing online wherein the police were seen using water canons on women and obstructing the Aurat March.&nbsp;

While posting one such video where a police officer was pushing a female participant back, Pakistan Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman wrote, “The Islamabad police had no business baton-charging a small peaceful procession."&nbsp;

“It is the women holding laathis that need to be pushed back, not progressive women. Sad to see this happening. I will seek an inquiry,” she added.

The Punjab home department has already imposed Section 144, barring public demonstrations and gatherings. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also rebuked the alleged use of force by the Islamabad Police. “Women have as much right to peaceful assembly as any citizen. The police are supposed to provide security to the marchers, not to resort to violence against peaceful demonstrators,” the commission said.

Pakistan’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah tweeted on Wednesday after the ruckus that Islamabad Police have been summoned and strict legal action will be taken.&nbsp;

After the social media was flooded with visual reports coming out of Pakistan, Islamabad Police said Inspector General Islamabad Dr Akbar Nasir Khan had taken notice of the incident. The police also sought a report from the DIG operations.

He further said that all roads leading to PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence had been cordoned off. Thousands took to the streets of Greece’s capital city Athens on Sunday (March 5),&nbsp; which also led to brief clashes between police and a group of protesters after they gathered in front of the Greek parliament on Syntagma Square. The demonstration was held over the deadliest train crash in the country following a call by the students, rail workers, and public sector employees. Meanwhile, Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued an apology for the accident which killed nearly 60 people.&nbsp;The station master at Greece's Larissa railway station was detained pending trial on Sunday. He&nbsp;faces multiple charges of disrupting transport and putting lives at risk.

What happened at the protests?

A small group of protesters on Sunday threw petrol bombs at police who responded with tear gas and hand grenades to disperse the crowd, reported Reuters. The crash took place between passenger and freight trains near the city of Larissa on Tuesday which killed at least 57 people out of the 350 passengers on board.&nbsp;

The incident has since sparked outrage across Greece and led to multiple protests calling for better safety regulations for the country’s rail network. Additionally, candlelight marches were also held over the week in memory of the victims, many of whom were students returning from a weekend break. At least nine of those killed in the passenger train were students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.&nbsp;

According to the police, around 12,000 people were present for the demonstration on Sunday. Demonstrators also released black balloons in the sky in memory of those who lost their lives due to the accident and some even carried signs like “Down with killer governments”. The family members and relatives of those killed were also expected to gather outside Larissa station for a memorial.&nbsp;

Railway workers denounce cost-cutting, under-investment in rail infra

Since the accident, railway workers who lost their colleagues have been staging rotating walkouts from Wednesday. This has paralysed the country’s train and metro services. The workers have denounced the government’s cost-cutting and under-investment in rail infrastructure.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the rail company Hellenic Train, which has become a focal point of public anger since the incident, released a statement late Saturday defending its actions. Hundreds of people also protested outside the company headquarters in Athens while a legal source told AFP that they are looking at the possibility of pressing charges against some of the senior members of Hellenic Train.

PM Mitsotakis issues an apology

The Greek PM took to Facebook on Sunday and wrote: “As prime minister, I owe everyone, but above all to the relatives of the victims, a big apology. Both personally, but also in the name of all those who have governed the country for years”. 
He added, “Indeed, it cannot be that in Greece in 2023, two trains can run on the same line in different directions and nobody notices.”&nbsp;

He also spoke about how the investigation into the accident is underway and justice for those responsible will be delivered soon. Notably, Mitsotakis also acknowledged the lack of remote surveillance and signalling system which the railway workers’ unions said has led to deficient safety systems throughout the rail network.&nbsp;

He said that if the remote system had been in place “it would have been, in practice, impossible for the accident to happen”. The Greek PM also announced that the country will seek inputs from European Commission and friendly countries&nbsp;on improving rail safety.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, on Friday (March 3) announced that he and his ministers have negotiated the release of the 88 people taken hostage by the indigenous and rural demonstrators of the country’s southern Caqueta province. This comes a day after violent protests erupted against the Chinese-state-owned company subsidiary, Emerald Energy where around 79 officers and nine workers at the oilfield were taken hostage and two people were killed.&nbsp;

“Thanks to the efforts of the Minister of Defence and the Interior, all members of the police and oil company officials held in San Vicente del Caguan, Caqueta, have been released,” said Petro on Twitter. Following the announcement, Petro also released a video, promising to hold a “dialogue” with the community “about their needs, their complaints.”

One police officer and a civilian were killed during the protests while 79 officers and nine Emerald Energy workers were taken hostage by the rural communities who demanded that the company help fix roads in the region as well as provide compensation for environmental damage caused to the surrounding area. Subsequently, during the negotiations, Prada said that government dialogue would only take place after the release of all the hostages by Friday morning.&nbsp;

Around 4,000 people took part in the protests on Thursday, said a spokesperson from the community to Al Jazeera. The spokesperson, who was not identified in the media report, also denied claims of the presence of armed groups calling it an attempt to delegitimise the protesters’ demands.&nbsp;

The Moldovan intelligence agency, on Monday (February 27) said that it expelled two foreign nationals who were staying in the country as tourists, reported the Associated Press. This comes weeks after President Maia Sandu accused Russia of planning to use foreign saboteurs to overthrow her government, a claim which Moscow has since vehemently denied and went on to accuse Moldova of “anti-Russian hysteria.”&nbsp;

In a statement, Moldova’s Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) alleged that the duo in question were going to implement plans to “destabilise the internal situation in the country,” and were trained in data and information gathering to provoke what they have described as “violent change” to the country’s constitutional order.&nbsp;

According to SIS, the two people who have been expelled and banned from returning to the country for 10 years were caught carrying out “subversive actions” to destabilise Moldova which included investigations on multiple locations near government offices and critical infrastructure. However, the intelligence agency did not mention the individuals’ names or their nationalities.&nbsp;

The SIS also alleged that the pair was in coordination with a “group of individuals affiliated with a conspiratorial network of overseas political technology and social engineering experts,” reported AP. The intelligence agency also claimed that they&nbsp;was monitoring and documenting the social and political processes which included the recent protests.&nbsp;

The country of about 2.6 million people has been facing anti-government protests where thousands have taken to the streets in the capital city of Chisinau and demanded that pro-Western president Sandu quit. Furthermore, they have also called for the government to fully cover citizens’ winter heating bills amid a cost-of-living crisis and Moldova’s soaring inflation.&nbsp;

Notably, the protest was organised by the recently formed group, Movement for the People which is also supposedly&nbsp;pro-Russia and is&nbsp;supported by&nbsp;members of the Russia-friendly Shor Party which also holds six seats in the Soviet republic’s 101-seat legislature.&nbsp;

The party’s leader Ilan Shor is a Moldovan oligarch is reportedly currently living in exile in Israel. Shor has been accused of $1 billion bank theft and was recently described&nbsp;in the US State Department sanctions list as working for Russian interests.

The Moldovan oligarch is accused of working&nbsp;with “corrupt oligarchs and Moscow-based entities to create political unrest” in the country, as per media reports. He allegedly also undermined the&nbsp;Soviet republic’s bid to join the European Union (EU).&nbsp;

The legislative initiative, known as “Plan B” was proposed by the president in December, last year however, was unable to garner enough votes.&nbsp;

Lopez Obrador has argued that this reorganisation will save $150 million per year as well as reduce the impact of economic interests in politics. Mexican presidents are only allowed to serve a single six-year term. Furthermore, the 69-year-old incumbent president has also alleged that the INE is too expensive and accused them of being biased in favour of his opposition.&nbsp;

The reform was approved in Mexico’s senate, on Friday with a 72 to 50 vote from lawmakers. Notably, the INE and its predecessor played an important role when the country moved from a one-party system to a multi-party democracy over two decades ago.&nbsp;

After the vote, on Friday, the current president’s opponents vowed to challenge this decision in the supreme court, while protests took place in multiple cities across the country. Some Mexicans have also noted similarities to the kind of rhetoric used by former United States President Donald Trump and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of elections which seems to aim at delegitimising the election process, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The agency which employs thousands of people will also witness the closure of offices and layoffs due to this legislation.&nbsp;

“Normally presidents try to have governability and stability for their succession, but the president is creating uncertainty”, said opposition politician, Fernando Belaunzaran. He has also warned how these changes could create disputes in the 2024 elections when the next president will be chosen. “He’s playing with fire,” said the opposition politician.&nbsp;

A Reuters report, citing polls, also said the incumbent president’s party National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) has a strong chance of winning in the upcoming elections. The “Plan B” comes ahead of the elections in two states of Mexico, which will take place in June and the general elections next year where voting is held for the president as well as lawmakers from 30 states.&nbsp;
