In their largest rally to date, supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hard-right government crammed the streets around the Knesset in Jerusalem on Thursday.

National Unity head Benny Gantz from opposition, said it was “unacceptable” that a justice minister “who is supposed to develop and strengthen the [judicial] system, attacks and incites against it.” “The fight is about the image of the country and not just about the legal reform. We will not let extremists from either side take control of the country,” Gants added in a speech during which members of the crowd shouted “no to talks.”

Masses swell on streets in Israel over judicial reforms as Knesset reconvenes

Three people were arrested after supporters of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of Spain’s fascist, Falange movement, clashed with the police on Monday (April 24). This comes as Primo de Rivera was to be re-buried in a simple grave after&nbsp;Spain recently passed a new law to deal with its authoritarian past. The body was exhumed from a mausoleum near Madrid and follows the &nbsp;2019 removal of the remains of dictator Francisco Franco.&nbsp;

The exhumation of Primo de Rivera’s body came six months after Spain passed its so-called democratic memory law which aimed to tackle the country’s legacy of the 1936-39 civil war and the decades of dictatorship that followed.&nbsp;

After the civil war, during his regime, Franco built a vast hillside mausoleum, where Primo de Rivera’s remains lay for over six decades after his execution by a firing squad in November 1936 for conspiring against the elected Republican government. In 1956, his remains were buried under the altar of the basilica in Valley of the Fallen.&nbsp;

When Franco died, in 1975, he was also buried there. However, under the newly passed law in Spain, no figure linked to the 1936 military coup which triggered the civil war should have a grave in “a prominent public place” as it could encourage acts of homage or exultation, as per AFP. Notably, it is the fourth time his remains have been exhumed.

Primo de Rivera’s family agreed to the exhumation and selected April 24 as the date because it marks 120 years since his birth. The complex built by Franco is also home to 34,000 people from both sides of the civil war, many of whom were also victims of Franco's regime, are also buried in unmarked graves in the mausoleum.

The complex was also reportedly, in part, built by 20,000 political prisoners. The basilica&nbsp;built on a mountain near the capital, topped by a 150-metre stone cross will be turned into a memorial to the 500,000 people killed during the Spanish&nbsp;civil war and is now called the Valley of Cuelgamuros. Notably, Primo de Rivera’s Falange party continues to exist but does not have any seats in the&nbsp;parliament.&nbsp;

Protests on Monday&nbsp;

According to reports nearly 200 sympathisers of Primo de Rivera gathered outside the San Isidro cemetery in southern Madrid, where he was taken to be reburied. Subsequently, police struggled to control the crowd which was chanting and making fascist salutes, as per media reports. 
 
This comes after the police had previously blocked access to the cemetery, however, Falange supporters gathered and also, as per reports,&nbsp;sang the Falangist hymn “Facing the sun”. Three people were arrested for public disorder, reported Reuters, citing a police source.&nbsp;

Kenyans were preparing for a fresh round of anti-government protests over the increasing cost of living on Monday after the opposition promised to take action even after a police ban.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga appealed to citizens to take to the streets every Thursday and Monday, a week after the protests had turned violent and various parts of Nairobi were paralysed.

However, on Sunday, the police announced a ban on the rallies. "We will not allow violent demonstrations," said Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

"The demonstrations they plan tomorrow (Monday) are illegal and will not be allowed,” he added.

Police arrested around 200 people which included various senior opposition politicians while protesters, including their own convoy of Odinga, were hit with water cannons and tear gas.

This was the first major political unrest since incumbent President William Ruto came to power around six months ago after Odinga was defeated in an election that his rivals alleged was "stolen".

Even after the police ban, Odinga appealed to the Kenyans on Sunday to take part in what he called “the mother of all demonstrations".

"I want to tell Ruto and the IG Koome that we are not going to be intimidated. We are not going to fear tear gas and police,” he added. President Ruto appealed to his rival to stop the action.

"I am telling Raila Odinga that if he has a problem with me, he should face me and stop terrorising the country," he stated on Thursday.

In fact, he could not escape demonstrators even after flying across the sea, as hundreds gathered outside 10 Downing Street prior to his meeting with Sunak.&nbsp;

During the meeting, Sunak stressed the importance of “upholding democratic values”, said the UK PM’s spokesperson after the talks. This comes as Israel is witnessing widespread protests over the proposed judicial overhaul by Netanyahu’s government which would supposedly be directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme Court and giving more power to the ruling party, which typically holds a majority in the Knesset (Israeli parliament).&nbsp;

Prior to Netanyahu’s meeting with Sunak, he was greeted by hundreds of protesters outside No 10 Downing Street who held Israeli flags and shouted various chants including “Boosha!” which means “for shame” in Hebrew and “Netanyahu go to jail, you can't speak for Israel!”, reported Reuters. 
 
Similar scenes were witnessed in Germany, last week, when hundreds gathered at the Brandenburg Gate to protest the proposed bills.&nbsp;

The readouts issued by both countries said how the leaders spoke about “strengthening the close partnership between the UK and Israel and challenges they share, including the threat posed by Iran and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

However, the Israeli readout of the meeting did not mention anything about the judicial overhaul, as per Israeli media reports. The statement by the UK government said, “The prime minister stressed the importance of upholding the democratic values that underpin our relationship, including in the proposed judicial reforms in Israel.”&nbsp;

Furthermore, Sunak also expressed his solidarity with Israel “in the face of terrorist attacks in recent months. The UK would always stand with Israel and its ability to defend itself,” said the statement by the British government. Netanyahu also said that he invited Sunak to visit Israel in the near future, while the British readout said that the UK PM “looked forward to visiting Israel at the earliest opportunity.”&nbsp;

According to reports, the Israeli PM left Downing Street less than an hour after he arrived. The leaders in the meeting also discussed Iran's “destabilising activity” and that their governments “would continue to work closely together to push back against aggression and manage the risk of nuclear proliferation”, said the UK. While a statement by Netanyahu’s office about the topic said that the conversation centred around the Iranian nuclear threat and the Israeli PM thanked his British counterpart for his position on the issue but called for more pressure on Tehran.&nbsp;

The statement by the UK government said, “The prime minister stressed the importance of upholding the democratic values that underpin our relationship, including in the proposed judicial reforms in Israel.” Furthermore, Sunak also expressed his solidarity with Israel “in the face of terrorist attacks in recent months. The UK would always stand with Israel and its ability to defend itself,” said the statement by the British government. While a statement by Netanyahu’s office about the topic said that the conversation centred around the Iranian nuclear threat and the Israeli PM thanked his British counterpart for his position on the issue but called for more pressure on Tehran. Protests in France don't seem to end while the country is witnessing weeks of demonstrations against a pension reform bill. In a first, protesters, including eco-activists have now started protesting in western france against the construction of a large water reservoir for agricultural irrigation.

French Pension Reforms: Violent protests break out at reservoir in Sainte-Soline

Protesters clashed with the French police on Saturday (March 25) as they opposed creation of a large water reservoir for farm irrigation resulting in several injuries. The incident took place in western rural district of Sainte-Soline. Police used tear gas to try to disperse the people who had come together despite a ban on gatherings in the area.

Some protesters threw fireworks and other projectiles as they approached the construction area. Television footage showed that at least three police vehicles were set alight.

Two protesters were seriously hurt, including one who is in a critical condition after suffering a head injury, as well as 16 police officers, the local prefecture said. One officer was evacuated by helicopter.

Thousands of protesters had converged on the site of the planned reservoir, where a similar protest last October also turned violent.

Emmanuelle Dubee, the prefect of the surrounding region, said around 1,000 radical individuals were expected among an estimated 6,000 protesters.

In light of the possible protests, around 3200 police personnel were deployed, said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

He blamed far left groups for the violence.

The heavy police presence included helicopters and squads riding quads.

The protest over the irrigation project comes after weeks of demonstrations in France against a pension reform that have turned violent since the government pushed through the legislation without a final parliamentary vote.
