<h2><strong>What happened in Tel Aviv?</strong></h2>

<p>According to Reuters, Israeli police fired stun grenades to break up the clashes, while some protesters hurled stones at police and set trash bins on fire. This was after hundreds of anti-government Eritreans stormed the venue to prevent the event from taking place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Israeli police also declared the gathering an illegal demonstration and ordered the street to be emptied. However, protesters “hurled rocks and wooden planks” at officers, who used riot dispersal means to clear Eritreans, some of whom vandalised shops in the area, said the police, as per AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Injuries and arrests</strong></h2>

<p>“Officers who feared for their lives used live fire against rioters,” said the Israeli police, in a statement, adding that some 27 officers were wounded during the altercation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police have also arrested 39 suspects “who assaulted police and threw stones” at officers, with some of them carrying “weapons, tear gas, and an electrical stun gun”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Israeli police have since ramped up security in the area amid reports of clashes between Eritreans and police, as well as between supporters and opponents of the Eritrean regime. “At this time, large police and Border Police forces continue to operate against lawbreakers in the Tel Aviv area,” said the officials, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AFP citing Israeli emergency service, Magen David Adom, said more than 114 people had been treated for injuries out of which eight were said to be in serious condition.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Danish government, on Friday (August 25) said that they are preparing to propose bills that would make it illegal to burn copies of the Quran in public places after a string of desecrations of the holy book in the Scandinavian nation which has sparked outrage in Muslim countries.</p>

<h2><strong>What does the Danish government plan to do?</strong></h2>

<p>In a press conference, Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said that the government will propose legislation that will prohibit the “inappropriate handling of objects with essential religious significance for a religious community.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The proposal will thus make it punishable to, for example, in public burn a Quran, Bible or Torah.” This also comes after Denmark recently ramped up security following backlash over a spate of Quran burnings in recent months.</p>

<p>Hummelgaard also called Quran burnings a “fundamentally contemptuous and unsympathetic act” that “harms Denmark and its interests”. In line with this, the proposed legislation will be included in chapter 12 of Denmark’s penal code, which covers national security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We can’t continue to stand by with our arms crossed while several individuals do everything they can to provoke violent reactions,” said Hummelgaard. The Danish government has also&nbsp;rejected protests by the opposition parties which said that the proposed legislation would infringe on free speech.</p>

<p>“I fundamentally believe there are more civilised ways to express one’s views than burning things,” said the Danish justice minister. Once passed, the violation of the law would be punishable by fines or up to two years in prison, Hummelgaard said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What prompted this?</strong></h2>

<p>Both Sweden and Denmark have ramped up border security after a series of Quran-burning protests and the backlash in early August and while Copenhagen ended the measure, on August 22, Stockholm continues to enforce it.</p>

In a press conference, Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said that the government will propose legislation that will prohibit the “inappropriate handling of objects with essential religious significance for a religious community.” He added, “The proposal will thus make it punishable to, for example, in public burn a Quran, Bible or Torah.” This also comes after Denmark recently ramped up security following backlash over a spate of Quran burnings in recent months. Hummelgaard also called Quran burnings a “fundamentally contemptuous and unsympathetic act” that “harms Denmark and its interests”. In line with this, the proposed legislation will be included in chapter 12 of Denmark’s penal code, which covers national security. The Danish government has also rejected protests by the opposition parties which said that the proposed legislation would infringe on free speech. “I fundamentally believe there are more civilised ways to express one’s views than burning things,” said the Danish justice minister. Once passed, the violation of the law would be punishable by fines or up to two years in prison, Hummelgaard said. What prompted this? Both Sweden and Denmark have ramped up border security after a series of Quran-burning protests and the backlash in early August and while Copenhagen ended the measure, on August 22, Stockholm continues to enforce it. In turn, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. “At least five police personnel were injured when the crowd attacked the CM’s secretariat at Tura in the evening today,” the CM secretariat told news agency PTI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The situation is under control but tense, said the CM’s office. Section 144 was imposed in Tura town with immediate effect. The Meghalaya CM also announced Rs 50,000 ($611) as ex-gratia payment for injured personnel and said that their medical expenses will be borne by the state government.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What preceded the protest?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the police, protesters were ostensibly seeking winter capital before a large number of outsiders entered the crowd gathered and began throwing stones at the office. There were also reports of tyres being burnt in several places across the town.</p>

<p>Prior to the violence, the Meghalaya CM was in the midst of holding a key meeting with the representatives of protesting civil bodies – Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) and the Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The groups, which were invited by Sangma for talks, had been on a hunger strike and had demanded that Tura be declared the winter capital of the state. According to officials, CM had engaged in “peaceful discussion with agitating organisations for over 3 hours at Tura” during the day, reported PTI.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>CM addresses the incident</strong></h2>

<p>The Meghalaya CM called the incident “very unfortunate,” in a video statement after the violence and said that the discussions with the protest leaders were almost over when they “heard some agitation from outside,” adding that “it seems that the pelting of stones was initiated by people who were not part of the agitating groups.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I asked them not to create any scene out here. Their leaders (of the protesting NGOs) went outside to speak to the people. They came back and said they did not know who these people were, never seen them before during the fasting protest,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sangma also said that the leaders themselves were taking shelter inside when the violence began, as they were not able to leave. Another meeting on the issue will be held in the presence of all stakeholders, said the CM, which has been tentatively scheduled in the state capital Shillong next month.</p>
