While observing Garib Adhikaar Diwas in protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's virtual rally, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday said that the double engine government has tortured poor people and the state government is only focused towards satisfying its hunger for power.

Earlier today, RJD leaders Rabri Devi, Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav clanged utensils to protest against Amit Shah's virtual rally to be held today and over the situation of migrant workers.

"Not only RJD but Bihar's labourers, farmers, unemployed people and others are clanging utensils in protest. The double engine government has tortured them mentally, physically and financially. We believe that poor people are an empty stomach, people are dying of hunger because of the governments," said Yadav.

He further asserted that the current government is only focused on satisfying their hunger for power. "Around 12 crore people across the country are unemployed. This government wants to satisfy their hunger for power rather than helping the poor.

RJD believes that BJP is the country's first such party who will celebrate the death of the poor. Seven crore youth in Bihar are unemployed," said Yadav.

"I want to ask Amit Shah and Nitish Kumar, are Bihar's migrants and poor being treated as thieves if they want to return to their homes. They are facing physical torture and financial constrain. Who is responsible for this situation? Nitish Kumar should at least apologise to Bihar's labourers and poor people. If he can't respect poor people, he should not disrespect them either," he added.

The 2014 disappearance of 43 student teachers who were apparently massacred after being abducted by corrupt police in southwest Mexico sparked international outrage and did lasting damage to the reputation of then-president Enrique Pena Nieto.

Inspired by the case of George Floyd, a black American man killed in Minneapolis last month after a white police officer knelt on his neck during an arrest, protests over police abuses have flared up in other parts of the world.

Floyd's death helped drive demonstrations over the fate of Lopez, who died in police custody in Jalisco last month after reportedly being detained by municipal officers for not wearing a face mask to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

A resulting demonstration triggered clashes and the arrest of protesters in Guadalajara on Thursday. Alfaro said he had decided to release the detainees without charges.

As hundred of thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest against the unlawful death of George Floyd, caused by police brutality, some Americans have made it clear that they do not agree with the protesters.

However, one man took it to another level to express his displeasure as drove his tanker truck on the westbound lanes of Interstate 35, honking, while the protesters were present on the road. The freeway was closed to traffic at the time.

“Very disturbing actions by a truck driver on I-35W, inciting a crowd of peaceful demonstrators,” the Minneapolis Department of Public Safety said on Twitter. “The truck driver was injured & taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is under arrest. It doesn’t appear any protesters were hit by the truck.”

Also read: Hong Kong security law undermines one country, two systems framework, say US, UK Now in 2020, China doesn't have to roll out tanks anymore. It can kill democracy with a law. Hong Kong, as we know, may soon be history. China is taking control of ending Hong Kong's autonomy. Despite protests, both on the streets of Hong Kong and in international political circles. Beijing is imposing the controversial national security law. It was proposed almost a week back. Today it was passed by China's parliament, the National People’s Congress. Also read: Mandatory divorce 'cooling-off' period meets with outrage in China And it doesn’t come as a surprise because the Chinese parliament - the NPC, is essentially a rubber-stamp parliament. In the final vote count there were 2,878 votes in favour and one against. Just one delegate was against it. Six chose to abstain and when the bill was passed, there was applause. This is in stark contrast to what happened in Hong Kong. Some very different scenes were playing out. There were clashes even as the legislative council was debating a different bill. However, the anger against Beijing was quite apparent. The law makes disrespecting China’s national anthem a criminal offence. An opposition lawmaker got so angry that he got up, spoke against the bill and threw rotten plants at the president’s seat. The lawmaker said that the rotten plants symbolised the decay of Hong kong’s political system. Two pro-democracy lawmakers were made to leave and emergency services were called in. Security guards were seen covering the container. One official was seen spraying air purifier around the chamber. All this is a signal of things to come as pro-democracy protesters gear up to fight Beijing on the streets again. China’s move to impose the national security law on Hong Kong will lead to an angry backlash. Beijing's new law is being described as a death knell for Hong Kong. It allows China to install its own security agencies in the region. It also gives China the power to quash any protest in Hong Kong. The devil, they say, is in the detail but there are no details. The final law hasn’t even been drafted yet. The top leadership of China under Xi Jinping and six others get to decide what the final law will look like and Hong Kong most likely, won't have a say in the process. Once the law is written, the leadership of Hong Kong, that is appointed by Beijing will be required to enforce it immediately. Hong Kong will lose its autonomy, independence and freedom. Its judicial system will look more like China’s. Activist groups could face bans and pro-democracy campaigners could be thrown in jail for a long period. This is what China has done in the face of rising protests and in the full glare of the global community, it has killed democracy in Hong Kong. However, this time world powers are not mute spectators. They are hitting back at Beijing with a series of retaliatory moves.

Spain, one of the worst hit countries by coronavirus, saw one of the strictest lockdowns. However, now Spain is easing the lockdown now.

Considering the same, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, on Saturday announced that Spain will be resuming tourism from July.

"From July, foreign tourism will resume in safe conditions. We will guarantee tourists will not take any risks and will not bring us any risks," Sanchez said in a video news conference. He did not provide any further details on this, though.

So, they are marching. They are marching in Lahore and in many other Pakistani cities despite being threatened, abused and harassed on social media and otherwise.

They are marching in Lahore holding placards with the picture of the late Asma Jehangir, an icon and the symbol of the fight against human rights abuses in Pakistan.

And they are marching shouting the slogan which with any evidence touched a raw nerve for a still patriarchal society: "Mera Jism, Meri Marzi", (my body my choice).

That reminds me of what we were shouting during the seventies in the streets of Italy: "Il corpo e mio e lo gestisco io" (The body is mine, and I`ll do what I want with it). Our other slogan was: "Tremble, Tremble, Witches are back". Because, for a patriarchal society, and unfortunately not only for that, an assertive woman is, of course, a witch, a prostitute, a danger for society and for the holy institution of the family.

An assertive, strong, independent woman is a threat for both patriarchal and religious institutions because she does not allow her life and her consciousness to be ruled by priests or mullahs or men.

But, unlike us during the seventies, women, and girls of Pakistan, the ones marching and the ones still without a voice, are facing more, much more than being insulted or undermined and that`s why they are marching.

Reports, in fact, both national and international, more than reports look like war news. In the 2019 Women, Peace and Security Index, Pakistan ranked 164 out of 167 countries, only above Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen, and worst among nine South Asian countries on access to mobile phones, financial inclusion, and discriminatory norms for women.

According to Amnesty International, who released a statement supporting the Aurat March: "Women in Pakistan are consistently deprived of education, justice, health care, political representation, and economic opportunities. They live under the constant threat of violence". And "the threats of violence, intimidation, and harassment being hurled at marchers who are merely demanding their due rights underscores the necessity of the Aurat March".

According to the same Amnesty statement: "In the World Economic Forum`s Global Gender Gap Index Report 2020, Pakistan ranked 151 out of 153 countries, indicating a dismal record on human rights for women. It charts at the very bottom of the seven South Asian countries included in the Index".

Around 12.2 million girls, compared with 10.6 million boys, remain out of school in the country because of poverty compounding challenges related to girls` educational opportunities.

Less-educated girls marry young, become mothers at an early age, and often face health challenges throughout their lives.

Women around the country have to face domestic violence, rape, honour killings, being thrown acid at, kidnapping and enforced disappearances. Especially in regions like KPK or Balochistan.

"The Baloch women not only have to deal with a regressive society and a regressive state but also with a brutal, repressive state which denies them and the men of their nation of rights which are thought acceptable for others. Navratilova, McEnroe row with Margaret Court heats up at Australian Open

Protesters from UK-based separatist and pro-Pakistani outfits assembled near the Indian High Commission in London on Sunday to observe a so-called ?Black Day? on India's Republic Day.

The protesters were kept away from getting too close to the High Commission building by a strong police presence, including mounted officers on patrol.

Hundreds waved flags and placards calling for "Khalistan 2020 Referendum" and "Free Kashmir" as they chanted slogans against the Indian government and the Indian Army.

The organisers, including Tehreek-e-Kashmir UK and Kashmir Solidarity Movement joined by some Sikh separatist outfits, gathered behind barricades set up opposite India House in Aldwych.

As a result of safety concerns raised by Indian High Commissioner Ruchi Ghanashyam with UK Home Secretary Priti Patel and London Mayor Sadiq Khan's pledge to provide a ?robust? policing plan, a large number of Metropolitan Police officers were on the scene to secure a parameter away from India House and prevent any violence.

"A proportionate policing plan is in place," Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

A similar so-called ?Free Kashmir? march was banned from assembly outside the High Commission building on Diwali last October following an intervention from the UK Home Office, in the wake of violent clashes during protests to coincide with Indian Independence Day on August 15 last year.

Diaspora groups had been lobbying with the Met Police and London Mayor Sadiq Khan to avert a repeat of similar violent scenes.

"I understand why many British Indians are so deeply concerned about a repeat of those awful scenes. Many have felt deeply threatened and worried, and I would like to assure all Londoners that anyone who acts unlawfully on Sunday will be held fully accountable by the police," said Sadiq Khan.

"The right to protest is an important and valued part of our democracy, but it must always be done peacefully and within the boundaries of the law," he said.

Later on Sunday evening, the Indian Workers' Association Great Britain (IWA-GB), an 80-year-old diaspora group, has called a "Defend the Constitution" Republic Day meeting at Southall in west London to hold a discussion on the implications of CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Pro-Pakistan, separatist groups stage anti-India protest in UK on Republic Day

Riot police firing tear gas and stun grenades clashed with rock-throwing demonstrators in Bogota Tuesday as anti-government protests resumed across Colombia, leaving 11 people injured and nearly 100 arrested.

Protests also took place in other major cities including Cali and Medellin, and nationwide the authorities recorded 165 marches, rallies or road blockages, police chief Oscar Atehortua said. Most of the arrests were in Bogota and 10 of the 11 injured were police, he said.

The Bogota events started in the late afternoon as a traditional pot-banging demonstration of the kind common in Latin America and late last year when protests first erupted against conservative President Ivan Duque's 17-month-old government.

What began as a general strike has morphed into a wider display of discontent over his economic policies, unemployment, political corruption and drug-financed violence.

Security forces were still deployed in the old quarter of Bogota as night fell Tuesday. Mayor Claudia Lopez said the day had been mostly peaceful, although in some neighbourhoods small groups turned violent.

In the city centre, a 60-year-old woman named Flor Calderon stood between protesters and riot police, asking officers to let the procession move forward.

"This is a fight for you and your children's children because this country is a mess," she said to police, waving a white flag.

Lopez, who took office on January 1, has set up procedures to try to prevent violence at demonstrations, which have left four people dead since they began on November 21.

About 500 people have been injured and around 200 arrested. Many protesters feel that efforts to end the decades-long armed conflict with the country's FARC rebels have detracted from progress in other areas of society.

They also want Duque to dismantle the feared ESMAD riot police, widely criticized for its heavy-handed response to demonstrations. Duque has yielded to some of the other demands on tax reform, announcing the refund of Value Added Tax to the poorest 20 per cent of the population and benefits for companies that hire young people.

The president defended what he called "a national conversation" with various sectors of society to try to find a way out of the stand-off.

The president of Tehreek-e-Kashmir in the UK denied that the protesters were paid or that Pakistan had any involvement.

He rather said that this is a protest by British Kashmiris and Sikhs without the involvement of any political parties, adding that there will not be any violence and that they were expecting around 2,000 to 3,000 people.

British Indians concerned about the security of the officials and the mission's building have requested the UK authorities to change the venue of these protests.

It is important to note here that it's not for the first time when protests are taking place at the Indian Embassy in London, UK.

Protests against the abrogation of Article 370 rocked the Embassy last year as well. The violent protests took an ugly turn when the embassy building was vandalised.

Fears of protests loom in London on India's Republic Day

It has been reported that in London, thousands of people may protest outside India's High Commission on the Republic day of India which may lead to vandalism to Indian High Commission building in London.

In 2017 the European Parliament invoked Article 7 of its governing treaty against Poland for persistently flouting democratic rules, the first time it had used the procedure.

The latest legislation was drawn up after some judges questioned the independence of peers nominated by a panel set up by the PiS-dominated parliament after nationalists won the 2015 elections.

PiS says the new law is necessary to make the judiciary more efficient.

"We are doing this for the citizens."

Judges from 22 European countries, including Germany, France, and Spain, participated in the protest, Iustitia said.

The march started in front of the Supreme Court, passed the president's office and ended at the parliament building to symbolise the principle of separation of powers, which the organisers say is now under threat.

"The situation is very serious, at least in our judgment, and that's why we are here," Jose Igreja Matos, President of the European Association of Judges, told Reuters.

A government spokesman told Reuters: "We believe that the bills that are being adopted in Poland regulate the stability of the legal system."

Ahead of the march, a PiS spokesman was quoted by private broadcaster TVN24 as saying that judges should not get involved in politics.

"We've come here to support Polish judges. We are here for the rule of law, not for politics," John MacMenamin, a judge of the Supreme Court of Ireland, told a press conference ahead of the protest.

The upper house of parliament where the opposition has a slim majority could reject the draft legislation, but the PiS-controlled lower house would still have the power to overturn any changes.

WION Dispatch: Hindu refugee family from Pak named their daughter as 'Nagarikta'

Iraqi protesters stepped up their demonstrations Tuesday with the authorities in Baghdad increasingly paralysed as they seek a way out of a political impasse.

Once again the capital's iconic Tahrir Square began filling early in the day, with protesters making clear their opposition to names touted by the establishment to fill the post of prime minister.

Portrait pictures of these candidates marked by a huge red cross increasingly adorn facades of buildings and tents in the protest area.

And once again the main avenues and roads in cities in the south of the country were blocked, as well as entrances to schools, universities and government buildings.

After dwindling in recent weeks, the civil disobedience campaign has rediscovered its vigour, as the protesters seek to uproot a political system condemned as deeply corrupt.

Negotiations over a candidate to replace premier Adel Abdel Mahdi, who quit in November in the face of protests against corruption and unemployment, have remained deadlocked since the latest in a series of deadlines expired at midnight on Sunday.

While a pro-Iran camp has tried to impose a candidate, Iraqi President Barham Saleh has reportedly put up resistance.

For Iraqis protesting since October 1, the system installed by the United States after it led a military coalition to overthrow dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003 has become overly beholden to Iran and is beyond reform.

Rallies have continued despite a campaign of intimidation that has included targeted killings and abductions of activists, which the United Nations blames on militias.

Politicians have been desperately trying to agree on who will be the next prime minister. But unable to find a parliamentary majority, time is running out.

The timetable set out in the constitution has already been overshot, with new negotiations due on Tuesday in the face of intransigence by pro-Iranian parties.

Parliament failed to meet as planned on Monday as there was no quorum.

"Every hour they come up with a new candidate, but we want someone who is independent," said one young demonstrator, standing in front of burning tyres on a road into southern Basra.

"We're ready to continue the general strike, a day, two days, three days even a hundred years if that's what it takes," he added, his face covered by a scarf to keep out the acrid smoke.

Officials say Iran wants to install Qusay al-Suhail, who served as higher education minister in the government of Abdel Mahdi.

Parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi, a Sunni, has announced he has dropped his support for Suhail, after a source in the presidency said Saleh had vetoed the proposed appointment.

Instead, Halbusi has urged his pro-Iran allies to come forward with another name.

As soon as the name of Assaad al-Aidani, the governor of Basra, began circulating, however, protests erupted in his oil-rich southern province, with demonstrators blocking roads to the ports, an AFP correspondent said.

Roads to Nasiriyah, Diwaniyah and Hilla in the south were also cut as well as in Kut and the holy Shiite shrine city of Najaf, as strikers stopped government officials from reaching work and closed the doors to schools.

After "all the sacrifices" with close to 460 dead since the start of the demonstrations in early October and 25,000 wounded, the protesters say they will not return home "until all their goals are met".

They are demanding a new constitution, a new electoral law and a complete overhaul of the political system, in a country with crippling unemployment, especially among the young people who make up more than half the population.

A long-promised economic revival in OPEC's number two oil producer never came, protesters say, with more than half of all oil revenues syphoned off by crooked politicians and their cronies.
