Military officers in Mali detained the president, prime minister and defence minister of the interim government on Monday, deepening political chaos just months after a military coup ousted the previous president, multiple sources said.

President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and Defence Minister Souleymane Doucoure were all taken to a military base in Kati outside the capital Bamako, hours after two members of the military lost their positions in a government reshuffle, the diplomatic and government sources said.

Their detentions followed the military ouster in August of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The development could exacerbate instability in the West African country where violent Islamist groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State control large areas of the desert north.

Political instability and military infighting have complicated efforts by Western powers and neighbouring countries to prop up to the impoverished nation, contributing to regional insecurity.

The United Nations' mission in Mali called for the group's 'immediate and unconditional' release and said those who hold the leaders, would have to answer for their actions.

A delegation from the top regional decision-making body ECOWAS will visit Bamako on Tuesday to help resolve the 'attempted coup', ECOWAS, the UN, African Union, European Union and several European countries said in a joint statement.

"The international community rejects in advance any act imposed by coercion, including forced resignations," the group said.

The US State Department called in a statement for the 'unconditional release of those currently being held'.

Ndaw and Ouane had been tasked with overseeing an 18-month transition back to civilian rule after the August takeover, but they appear to have moved against the military's control over a number of key positions.

"The sacking of the pillars of the coup was an enormous misjudgement," a senior former Malian government official said. "The actions are probably aimed at getting them back in their jobs."

The military's ultimate goal was not immediately clear. One military official in Kati said this was not an arrest. "What they have done is not good," the source said, referring to the cabinet reshuffle. "We are letting them know, decisions will be made."

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he will sign a decree allowing the transfer of presidential power to the security council if he were to become unable to perform his duties, the state Belta news agency reported on Saturday.

"Tell me, if there is no president tomorrow, would you guarantee everything is going to be fine? No," he told reporters during a visit to areas affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986, according to Belta.

"I will sign a decree about how the power in Belarus will be set up. If the president is shot, the next day the security council will get the power," Lukashenko said.

According to the current procedure, if the president's position becomes vacant, or he is unable to fulfill his duties, his power is transferred to the prime minister until a new president takes oath.

The prime minister would head the security council if the president is absent, Lukashenko added.

Lukashenko, 66, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, has faced street protests following a presidential election in August 2020. He said he would only step down if there was no protests or revolutionary activities in the country.

Lukashenko to amend emergency transfer of presidential power: Report

Amid the growing atrocities against the minority communities of Pakistan, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz has asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to speak to the relatives of the Baloch missing persons, who are protesting in Islamabad against the various human rights violations, including the issue of enforced disappearances.

"You are placed in the corridors of power," Maryam said on Wednesday, in a message to the Pakistan’s prime minister as she visited the protest site in the D-Chowk area, Geo News reported.

"It is your duty to listen to these people," Maryam added. This comes as protests are being held in Islamabad against forced abduction, torture, and harassment by the Pakistani agencies.

The protest is being held in a bid to highlight the plight of minority communities in the different regions of Pakistan. There is a long history of enforced disappearances in Balochistan. While thousands of Balochs have been abducted and disappeared since its illegal occupation, hundreds of others have been eliminated in the line with Pakistan's 'kill and dump' policy. Thousands still remain unaccounted for. Enforced disappearance has been used as a tool by the Pakistani state to silence the oppressed people of Balochistan since the very first day of its occupation.

While countless abductees have been killed, many of them are still facing inhumane torture in army secrets cells. Enforced disappearances have been an old stain on Pakistan's human rights record.

Despite the pledges of successive governments to criminalise the practice, there has been a very slow movement on legislation, which is equal to nothing, while people continue to be forcibly disappeared with impunity.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia resigned on Thursday. He stepped down over plans to arrest a top opposition leader. He said it risked escalating a political crisis.

Gakharia said he was resigning because of disagreement in the government over enforcing a court order to arrest Nika Melia. He said that to do so would "pose a risk to the health and lives of our citizens and increase political polarisation in the country."

"It is inadmissible to enforce a judiciary decision... if that poses a risk to the health and lives of our citizens or creates the possibility of a political escalation in the country."

A court in Georgia on Wednesday ruled to place Melia in pre-trial detention.

Melia, who faces up to nine years behind bars if found guilty of "organising mass violence" during anti-government protests in 2019, has rejected the charges as politically motivated.

The move to arrest Melia -- chairman of the country's main opposition force, the United National Movement (UNM) -- raised the stakes in a political crisis that has gripped Georgia since parliamentary elections in October.

The opposition denounced the polls as rigged after the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory.

Leaders of nearly all of the country's opposition parties gathered Wednesday at the UNM party headquarters in the capital Tbilisi ahead of the trial, vowing to obstruct police if they moved to arrest Melia.

Georgian television stations on Wednesday night aired footage of riot police mobilising close to the UNM headquarters.

In a statement ahead of the trial, the European Union envoy to Georgia described the circumstances surrounding Melia's prosecution as a "dangerous trajectory for Georgia and for Georgian democracy."

The US embassy in Tbilisi said on Twitter that the crisis "must be resolved peacefully", urging both the government and the opposition to show restraint.

Canadian conservatives will reveal Sunday their pick for a new leader and main contender to challenge liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in possible snap elections.

Four candidates vied to replace outgoing Andrew Scheer, including two former ministers, the first Seventh-day Adventist ever to be elected to parliament, and an outsider seeking to become the first black woman to lead a major federal political party in Canada.

Frontrunner Peter MacKay, 54, was looking to mark his triumphant return to politics following a five-year hiatus.

After leading Canada's foreign, defense and justice departments in the last Tory administration from 2006 to 2015, he ducked the limelight.

He has faced a strong challenge for the party leadership from former air-force navigator and former veterans affairs minister Erin O'Toole, 47, who ran twice previously for the job.

Also watch| Canada's economic growth to outpace US: Recovery twice as fast as in US

Both have touted a need for the party to broaden its appeal to progressive voters, with a focus on jobs and the economy, but also to pitch a clear climate plan, which has been lacking from the Tories.

"I will be Canada's jobs prime minister," MacKay told public broadcaster CBC, promising "a real environmental plan."

He also pledged if he becomes prime minister to ban China's Huawei from Canada's 5G networks, and a tax overhaul.

Toppling Trudeau
The coronavirus pandemic made campaigning for the Tory leadership a challenge, preventing the usual gladhanding and engaging with stakeholders.

Balloting by mail replaced the spectacle of a leadership convention with balloons and streamers, and Canadians have shown little interest as they contended with the virus.

Forcing snap elections to challenge the Liberals would be an equally hard sell in the midst of the worst economic crisis since World War II.

The next opportunity will be at the end of September when Trudeau seeks parliament's support for massive new social and environmental spending to steer Canada out of its economic slump.

The Tories, however, would need the backing of at least two other parties to topple the minority government.

Married to an Iranian-born former beauty queen, with whom he has three children, MacKay was first elected to Parliament in 1997 representing his father's old Nova Scotia electoral district.

As leader of the Progressive Conservatives, he made a deal with Stephen Harper and his Canadian Alliance to merge the two parties and unite the right.

But its loss to Trudeau in 2015 underscored a need to expand its base in rural and western Canada.

"We need more urban and suburban Canadians to see that their values of liberty, family and equality have always been at the core of the Conservative Party," O'Toole said.

Dark horse
Pundits suggested Leslyn Lewis as leader could reinvigorate the party.

The Jamaican-born lawyer does not speak French, does not have a seat in parliament, and is not well known, having only once ran for public office.

In the 2015 election, she was parachuted in to replace an appliance repairman bounced from the Tory slate mid-campaign after he was caught on an investigative television show urinating into a homeowner's coffee mug while on a service call.

Lewis scored relatively well in that ballot, but lost to the Liberal candidate.

She represents a resurging social conservative wing of the party, having voiced opposition to gay marriage and abortion, and saying she would seek to restrict access to recreational cannabis, which was legalized by the Trudeau administration in 2018.

She also reportedly believes climate change is overblown.

Social conservatism, also espoused by Adventist candidate Derek Sloan, is a tough sell to Canadians, with two-thirds of voters having supported progressive parties in the last ballot.

Sloan, 35, has courted controversy, suggesting that homosexuality is a choice, while opposing mask-wearing and mandatory vaccinations.

"Many Canadians don't share and are even afraid of social conservative views," commented Carleton University professor Jonathan Malloy.

The king of Lesotho, Letsie III, has assented to legislation that prevents Prime Minister Thomas Thabane from dissolving parliament and calling an election in the event of a vote of no confidence against him, the attorney general said on Thursday.

Thabane, 80, has been under pressure to resign over a murder case in which he and his wife are suspected of killing his previous wife. They both deny the charges.

"The ninth amendment (to the constitution) is now a law given that His Majesty has assented to it. It`s already effective, just awaiting printing," Attorney General Haae Phoofolo told Reuters.

The law means that in the event of a vote of no confidence against Thabane passing, he would have no choice but to leave office.

Thabane has previously said he will leave at the end of July, but his opponents say that is not soon enough.

In a statement on Thursday, Thabane reiterated that he had voluntarily decided to vacate office due to his age as he was no longer "energetic".

"I have always been consistent that it is my wish to retire from office by 31st of July, or earlier date of the 12th June 2020, if all necessary conditions of my retirement are put in place," he said.

Thabane said the amendment was a significant step leading up to his retirement.

"Government and the political party that I lead, will coordinate the process of my retirement maturely and to ensure the continued stability of Lesotho," he said.

"I hope that all the preparations will be finalised as soon as possible and ahead of the deadline that I have set for myself."

Thabane`s lawyers have previously argued that being prime minister should give him immunity from prosecution, but it is unclear whether or not that was part of negotiations for his departure from office.

Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, has experienced several coups since gaining independence from Britain in 1966.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has requested the Prime Minister to start special trains for the stranded migrant labours.

The request came after guidelines were issued in which the government stated that it will allow the stranded migrant labourers and students to go back to their hometown. the inter-state movement will be allowed only by buses which will ave to properly sanitised before use, and everyone will have to follow the protocols of social distancing.

"Estimates indicate that nearly one million workers will need transport to go back to their states. The only feasible option in the circumstances was to arrange special trains, which the Railways may run from point to point, keeping in view the number of persons to be transported to a given destination," Punjab CM wrote in a letter to Narendra Modi.

Talking specifically about the migrant labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and other states who are stranded in Punjab, he wrote, "These workers are engaged both in agriculture and industries. However most of them either lost their jobs or could not find employment/work due to curfew imposed in the state to contain coronavirus."

Singh conducted a video call with his state officials and informed everyone that he has requested the Prime Minister to ask the Railway Ministry to start special trains for such labourers and students.

He has asked the District Collectors (DCs) to prepare state-wise data of migrant labourers to coordinate their movement, and has assigned one officer for each state to coordinate the return of stranded migrants.

During the video call, he pointed out that Ludhiana alone had over seven lakh migrant labourers, with the whole of Punjab having over a million of them. He also added that 70 per cent labourers belong to bihar.

As the number of stranded labourers is huge, Singh feels transportation through trains will be easier and faster, when compared to buses.

Also, to make sure nobody in the state stays hungry, he has also ordered the Food Department to increase the quota of rations to be distributed to migrants and non-smart cardholders.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds announced on Saturday they are expecting their first child together and are engaged to be married.

The couple has been living together in Downing Street since Johnson became prime minister in July, with Symonds the first unmarried partner to live openly with a British leader in recent history.

"The prime minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer," the couple said in a statement.

The 55-year-old Johnson took office in July and led his Conservative Party to a decisive election victory in December.

The announcement means he will become the first British prime minister to marry in office for 250 years.

The couple’s relationship was the subject of scrutiny during his bid to take over from Theresa May as prime minister last summer after police were called to Symonds’ home by a neighbour who heard an apparent row between them.

Symonds, 31, said in a message posted on Instagram that she had kept news of her engagement secret until now.

"I wouldn't normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me," she said.

"Many of you already know but for my friends that still don't, we got engaged at the end of last year... and we've got a baby hatching early summer," Symonds said, adding: "Feel incredibly blessed".

Johnson was congratulated by members of parliament, including his former finance minister, Sajid Javid, who resigned after losing a power struggle over who should control Britain's economy.

"Wonderful news!," Javid said on Twitter.

Third marriage

Johnson, known for his rumpled appearance and flamboyant oratory, was previously married to Marina Wheeler, and they had four children together. They announced in September 2018 that they had separated and would divorce after 25 years of marriage.

The couple reached a financial settlement earlier this month, British media have reported.

Johnson has fathered one other child. He has always refused to say how many children he has. During the election campaign, Johnson said that he would not "put them on the pitch".

Johnson was married to Allegra Mostyn-Owen before Wheeler, so Symonds will be his third wife.

Johnson's most notable action so far in office has been to fulfil an election campaign pledge to "get Brexit done". Britain finally left the European Union at the end of January, more than three years after Britons voted in a referendum to leave the bloc.

Johnson will be the first British leader since Augustus Henry FitzRoy, who was prime minister between 1768 to 1770, to remarry in office.
