After a vacation in the Caribbean, former prime minister Boris Johnson flew back to the UK on Saturday with the intention of making a bold political comeback, while Conservative competitor Rishi Sunak passed the electoral threshold to run for the position of UK prime minister.

Allies told British media that Johnson was "up for it" and that he had cut short a luxurious vacation in the Dominican Republic to enter the contest to succeed departing leader Liz Truss, which appeared to be between three candidates.

The divisive 58-year-old architect of Brexit only stepped down from office in early September, two months after declaring it in the wake of a Tory uprising over a number of scandals.

Opposition politicians and even some members of his own split ruling party have already criticised his apparent attempt to run for office again just a few weeks later. They are calling for stability and togetherness.

"It is simply not right to risk repeating the chaos (and) confusion of the last year," said David Frost, a right-wing formerly loyal minister appointed to the House of Lords by Johnson.

"We must move on," he urged the Tories, adding they "must get behind a capable leader who can deliver a Conservative programme" who he identified as ex-finance minister Sunak.

Frost's remarks are reminiscent to those made by Johnson's deputy prime minister, Dominic Raab, who told Sky News that an upcoming parliamentary investigation into the "Partygate" affair that hounded his former boss would prove to be too distracting.

Sunak's parliamentary friends disclosed late Friday that he has obtained the 100 Conservative MP nominations required to run for office.

Despite rumours that Sunak was about to declare his candidacy, Johnson has also yet to confirm his candidacy.

Johnson back in UK as Sunak qualifies for PM race

Liz Truss has just become UK's shortest-serving Prime Minister ever. But before her, there were several gentlemen who shared that title. Priyanka Sharma takes you through their names & credentials.

Gravitas: UK's Shortest-serving Prime Ministers

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss on Monday (October 17) apologised in no uncertain terms for her economic reforms that triggered turmoil in UK. However, she vowed to remain prime minister in spite of humiliating climbdowns which have seen her struggling for political survival.

"I do want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made... we went too far and too fast," she told the BBC.

However, she said that she was "completely committed to delivering for this country" despite questions over who was now in control of government policy.
Her government on Monday axed almost all of its debt-fuelled tax cuts unveiled last month to avert fresh market chaos.

The shock move by new finance minister Jeremy Hunt who succeeded sacked Kwasi Kwarteng, has left Truss in precarious position politically and voices from Truss' own Conservative Party said that Hunt was a "de facto prime minister"

Hunt estimated the tax changes would raise about £32 billion ($36 billion) per year, after economists estimated the government faced a £60-billion black hole. He also warned of tough spending cuts.

"The prime minister and I agreed yesterday to reverse almost all the tax measures announced in the growth plan three weeks ago," Hunt told parliament, flanked by a grim-faced Truss.

He also announced the formation of an economic advisory council, featuring four experts outside of government.

Hunt scrapped plans to axe the lowest rate of income tax, and curbed the government's flagship energy price freeze -- pulling the plug in April instead of late 2024.

After April, his department will "review" its energy support package, he said.

A proposed reduction in shareholder dividend tax was also binned, along with planned tax-free shopping for tourists and a freeze on alcohol duty.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, power centre in the country's politics, has been named the prime minister. The passing on of the prime ministerial post is significant as it's traditionally held by the king. The government shuffle took place on Tuesday night (September 27) by decree.

Mohammed bin Salman, or MBS as he is often called in media, has been Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler for several years. The heir apparent to the desert kingdom has previously served as deputy prime minister under King Salman as well as defence minister.

He is being replaced as defence minister by his younger brother, Khalid bin Salman, who was previously deputy defence minister.

According to the royal decree from King Salman published by the official Saudi Press Agency, the heads of other critical ministries including interior, foreign and energy, remained in place

Prince Mohammed bin Salman turned 37 last month. Since 2017, he has been first in line to succeed his father as king.

He became defence minister in 2015, a key step in a swift consolidation of power that saw him take the lead on major portfolios.

Saudi Arabia has for years sought to quell speculation over the health of 86-year-old King Salman, who has ruled the world's top oil exporter since 2015.

In 2017, it dismissed reports and mounting speculation that the king was planning to abdicate in favour of Prince Mohammed.

King Salman has been hospitalised twice so far this year, most recently a one-week stay in May that involved tests including a colonoscopy, according to state media reports.

Liz Truss vows to go ahead with tax cuts after winning UK Prime Minister election

The United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has created a following for herself thanks to her alleged resemblance to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during her first leadership battle. Dubbed “the new Iron Lady”, the 46-year-old has replaced Boris Johnson as the Prime Minister of the UK after emerging victorious over Rishi Sunak.

Both of Truss’ parents came from academic backgrounds with father John Kenneth Truss teaching mathematics at the University of Leeds and mother Priscilla Mary being a teacher as well as a member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

She studied economics, politics and philosophy at Merton College, Oxford before joining the Conservative Party in 1996. In her first ever election in 2010, she represented the party in South West Norfolk and since then, she has never lost that seat.

Over the course of her career, Truss has held cabinet positions under the leadership of David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. In 2014, she was appointed Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and in 2016, she became the first female Lord Chancellor in the history of the office. Liz Truss: Main contender against Rishi Sunak becomes the new UK PM

Britain's Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) said on Thursday that staff working at Britain's business and energy department building will begin a strike on the same day as UK's new prime minister is named next week. Cleaners, security guards, reception workers, mail room staff and others at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) will walk out on Sept. 5 and 6 over health, safety and other entitlements

The union said that the action was "a sign of things to come" for the next prime minister. UK's new prime minister is expected to be named on September 5. He or she will formally begin work on September 6.

"Our members all across the civil service are increasingly angry and desperate as the government does nothing to ease the cost-of-living crisis," PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said. The striking staff are on outsourced contracts, not direct government employees.

A new leader will be at the helm of the country at a time of industrial unrest. Union workers are striking across wide range of industries. Surging inflation has fuelled demands for higher pay and better working conditions.

Liz Truss, the frontrunner to replace Boris Johnson as Britain's prime minister, said she would bring in "tough and decisive action" to limit strike action by trade unions if she becomes leader.

The union said the strike was due to the failure of ISS, the firm which employs the outsourced workers, to implement health and safety protocols and "putting PCS members at unacceptable risk".

After his five secret ministry self-appointments were made public, the former Australian leader, Scott Morrison, refused to resign from the federal parliament. During a press conference on Wednesday (August 17), Morrison used a tough tone and declared that he would continue to represent Cook, despite rising demands for him to resign, including from people from his own party.

Morrison defended his choice to conceal the ministries by claiming that he had never used the authority he possessed. The leader then explained why he chose himself for the most powerful position in the government.

Earlier, Morrison was remarked as dictatorial. The former leader disagreed, claiming that the emergency powers were implemented in accordance with the law and by a democratically elected prime minister.

On Monday, Albanese will receive guidance on the subject from the attorney general. The leader on Wednesday declared that "This is fundamentally a trashing of our democratic system," Reuters reported.

Lal Bahadur Shastri had travelled to Taskent, then part of Soviet Russia in 1965. However, a day after signing Tashkent peace treaty to end 1965 Indo-Pakistan war he passed away. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding his death.

The matter came into light again after Robert Crowley, second-in-command of CIA's Directorate of Operations (in-charge of covert operations) said that Shastri was murdered by the agency. His statment has been mentioned in a book titled 'Conversation With the Crow' by Gregory Douglas.

Crowley also said that Indian nuclear scientist Dr Homi Bhabha was also killed by the intelligence agency. Bhabha died in a plane crash in the Alps in the year 1966.

The world is now focused on Rishi Sunak, a 42-year-old man of Indian descent who is currently a leading candidate for the position of UK prime minister. His ancestry, political ascent, and fortune have piqued interest among Indians as well as British people.Rishi Sunak has gained further attention as a result of claims that Boris Johnson's downfall was caused by his departure as British Chancellor of the Exchequer.

After his Conservative Party colleagues strongly supported him with 137 votes in the final round on Wednesday, he is now the closest anybody of Indian heritage has ever come to taking office as British Prime Minister. The former Chancellor is not guaranteed a similarly smooth ride because he must compete with a considerably more difficult electorate of the Tory membership base that has recently shown favouritism for his competitor, Liz Truss, in polls.

There is still time for the MPs' favourite to attempt to duplicate that outcome at the conclusion of postal voting on September 5, though, as another head-to-head televised debate between the final two candidates is set on the BBC for Monday and a series of hustings will be held around the UK.

Rishi Sunak: The Indian-origin leader who could become the next prime minister of UK

UK PM Boris Johnson resigns from Conservative Party leadership. Johnson, 58, announced that he would step down after a slew of resignations this week from his top team in protest at his leadership but would stay on as prime minister until a replacement is found. Boris Johnson took power three years ago but his tenure was marked by scandals within his own party. Recently, he survived a no-confidence motion from his own party colleagues. The 'partygate' or the alcohol-fuelled parties at his official residence when most of Britain was in strict lockdown hounded his government. Johnson had to repeatedly apologise in the parliament when the news hit headlines. Just a few days ago the image of his government took more beating as Conservative Party deputy chief whip Chris Pincher was accused of groping men. An exodus from his ministers followed.

Timetable to select the new leader of the Tory party will be announced next week, said Johnson during his press address.

As per reports by the BBC and other media outlets, Conservative Party leadership election will take place over the summer. Successor to Boris Johnson is likely to be announced in the party's annual conference due to take place in early October

Johnson said he was "sad... to be giving up the best job in the world" and justified fighting on in the final hours to deliver the mandate he won in a general election in December 2019.

In the frenzied hours building up to Johnson's announcement, opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer had welcomed his impending departure.

UK PM Boris Johnson resigns, hunt on for successor from Conservative Party

Despite the humiliating double by-election defeats suffered by the Conservative party in Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield, British PM Boris Johnson has vowed to "keep going" at No. 10. The devastating losses for his Conservative Party also led to the resignation of the party chairman and one of his close supporters, Johnson suffered a triple blow, posing yet another serious threat to his leadership.

The Liberal Democrats won Tiverton and Honiton in the south of England and the opposition Labour Party won Wakefield in the north of England. Both polls were interpreted as a de facto vote on Johnson's 58-year-old leadership of the party and as UK prime minister.

Boris Johnson has said he will "listen" to voters but will "keep going" after the Tories suffered a double by-election defeat.

"I think that what governments also have to recognise is that I don’t want to minimise the importance of what voters are saying, but it is also true that in mid-term, governments post-war, lose by-elections.I think if you look back to last May the truly astonishing thing was we managed to win Hartlepool in very different circumstances," he said.

With 13,166 votes against the Conservatives' 8,231 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Simon Lightwood was able to defeat them and win for Labour. Meanwhile, Richard Foord of the Liberal Democrats won decisively in Devon, defeating a 24,000-vote Tory majority with 22,537 votes.

Watch | How will Boris Johnson tackles UK's cost-of-living? Important points of recent development Oliver Dowden, the head of the Tory party, leaves after two losses in by-elections. UK by-election: Tory chief quits after defeat, dealing a blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the only way to remain in power is to have your own media outlet and to tackle the “insanity of the progressive left.” His comments came during a special conference of the US Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Budapest’s Balnaconference centre.

Orbán, who was recently elected to a fourth term, laid out a 12-point blueprint to achieving and consolidating power under the slogan “God, Homeland, Family”.

He claimed that the US media— CNN, the New York Times and others—is largely dominated by “Leftist” Democrats and called for shows like right-wing aligned Fox News Tucker Carlson’s to be broadcast “24/7”.

“We have to take back the institutions in Washington and Brussels. We must find allies in one another and coordinate the movements of our troops,” Orbán said, suggesting that it was time for the right to join forces.

He told Republicans that media influence was one of the keys to success.

In Hungary, the prime minister and his allies have effective control of most media outlets in Hungary, including state TV, reported The Guardian.

“Have your own media. It’s the only way to point out the insanity of the progressive left,” he was quoted as saying.

“The problem is that the western media is adjusted to the leftist viewpoint. Those who taught reporters in universities already had progressive leftist principles.”

The Guardian claimed that journalists from reputed media outlets like the New Yorker, Vox Media, Vice News, Rolling Stone, and the Associated Press, were denied access to the event despite months of requests.

It is being claimed that the organisers either ignored their requests for accreditation or told them to “watch the event online”.

Orbán’s 12-point action plan also included points on faith, “because the absence of faith is dangerous” and the importance in countering “LGBT propaganda” which was “still new in our country but we have already destroyed it”.

In Budapest, Hungary’s Viktor Orban tells CPAC conservatives to have own media to retain power

On Monday(May 16), French President Emmanuel Macron named Elisabeth Borne as the country's new prime minister. She is the first woman to lead the French government since 1992 and only the second woman to hold the office.

Following Macron's re-election last month, Borne succeeds Jean Castex, whose resignation paved the path for a cabinet reshuffle.

She will want to have a bigger impression than France's first female prime minister, Edith Cresson, who served under President Francois Mitterrand for less than a year before resigning amid a corruption scandal.

At the transition of power ceremony, Castex called Borne "Madame la Premiere Ministre" with a broad smile, before warning:

"The role [of prime minister] is not exempted from public exposure and criticism, dear Elisabeth, people even say that's what it had been created for," Castex said of what the French often refer to as the "job from hell," working to implement plans on behalf of an ever-present president.

Borne's profile is likely to help Macron appeal to radical-left voters who supported Jean-Luc Melenchon in the first round of the presidential election in April, while avoiding upsetting followers of Marine Le Pen on the right.

Her first responsibility would be to guide Macron's centrist coalition through the 2018 parliamentary election.

Despite her previous ties to the Socialist Party, Borne demonstrated her commitment to the president by serving as transport, environment, and eventually labour minister during his first term.

Unemployment dropped to its lowest level in 15 years under her control, and young unemployment dropped to its lowest level in 40 years.

Macron's choice of Borne was criticized by some left-wing politicians and their supporters. Firebrand far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon said her appointment marks "a new season of social and ecological mistreatment," claiming on Twitter that her legacy amounted to "a reduction in the allowances of 1 million unemployed people."

Borne's first mission will be to make sure that Macron's centrist party and its allies do well in France's parliamentary election in June. The vote, scheduled for two rounds, will determine which group holds the majority of seats at the National Assembly, which has the final say over the Senate in France's law-making process.

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson will begin his India visit next week from the western state of Gujarat. The UK PM will be on a two-day India visit, from April 21 to 22.

On Thursday (April 21), Johnson lands in Gujarat where he is expected to announce a major investment in key industries. On Friday, he will hold talks with Indian PM Narendra Modi in Delhi.

Gujarat is the home state of PM Modi and with key diaspora connections, the state is the ancestral home of around half of the British-Indian population in the UK.

It is rare for any visiting head of government or state to begin a visit from outside of New Delhi and shows an outreach to London at a provincial level.

Ahead of his visit, UK PM said, "India, as a major economic power and the world's largest democracy, is a highly valued strategic partner for the UK in these uncertain times."

He is the first European head of government to visit India since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, something that will dominate the agenda. Johnson was on a secret visit to Ukraine during which he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirmed strong support.

Johnson in his remarks on the visit to India said, "As we face threats to our peace and prosperity from autocratic states, it is vital that democracies and friends stick together".

Just last month, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was in Delhi as part of a "wider diplomatic push" amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Trade, UK's Indo Pacific tilt are other key focus areas during the visit. India and UK have had two rounds of talks on the free trade agreement, the third will start later this month.

The UK PM pointed out, "My visit to India will deliver on the things that really matter to the people of both our nations – from job creation and economic growth to energy security and defence."

India has been identified as a priority relationship for the UK in the 2021 Integrated Review and was invited as a guest to last year's G7 in Carbis Bay.

This is the first visit by Johnson to India as the PM of the UK. Both Indian PM Modi and British PM Johnson met last year in November on the sidelines of the Glasgow climate summit.

Last year, twice the UK PM's India visit was cancelled. First in January, when he was the chief guest at India's Republic Day, but due to the COVID-19 crisis in his country, it could not materialise, and then in April, when India was in the midst of a pandemic wave.
