Lubomir Strougal, who served as the prime minister of communist-ruled Czechoslovakia in 1970-1988, has died aged 98, the Czech news site Seznam Zpravy said on Monday.

Strougal became a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party's Central Committee, its top body, at age 34 in 1958 and stayed until the regime was toppled in the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

He became agriculture minister in 1959 and interior minister in 1961.

Strougal condemned the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, which crushed the short-lived period of greater freedom known as the Prague Spring.

But he was quick to change sides and became Czechoslovakia's premier two years later, despite criticism from then-Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that the government has no choice but to agree to bailout conditions of IMF that are "beyond imagination". A delegation from International Monetary Fund (IMF) landed on Tuesday in Pakistan for the last talks to revive the months-stalled financial aid.

The government has opposed the demands of the IMF related to tax rise and subsidiary slashing, as it fears backlash before the elections which are scheduled in October.

"I will not go into the details but will only say that our economic challenge is unimaginable. The conditions we will have to agree to with the IMF are beyond imagination. But we will have to agree with the conditions," said Sharif, in televised comments.

The economy of Pakistan is in dire conditions, hit by the balance of payments crisis as the government is trying to manage high levels of external debt, amid deteriorating security and political chaos.

The central bank of the country on Thursday announced a drop in foreign exchange reserves to $3.1 billion, which analysts stated is sufficient for less than three weeks of imports.

On Wednesday, the data showed the year-on-year inflation at a 48-year high due to which Pakistanis have been struggling to purchase basic food items.

Pakistan ‘will have to agree’ to IMF’s bailout conditions though it will trigger price rise: PM Sharif

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern shock move to step down as the New Zealand Prime Minister on 7 February made headlines on Thursday as she made the announcement. What just happened? Prime Minister Ardern turned heads and grabbed eyeballs for her efficient management through the COVID-19 pandemic and her leadership at times of crisis. She became the world's youngest female head of government at age 37. The leadership change comes ahead of the October elections. With this, Labour Party will now have to come up with a new face for the general election scheduled for 14 October 2023. So, what is the possible reason for Jacinda to take the decision to step down as New Zealand PM?

Burnout and other possible reasons

During her announcement to step down as New Zealand PM, Ardern said that she no longer has enough in the tank to do [the role] justice and that there are others around her who do. ‘This summer, I had hoped to find a way to prepare for not just another year, but another term – because that is what this year requires. I have not been able to do that," she said. The speech can possibly indicate that the PM had burnout. WHO defines burn-out as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. According to the global health organization, it is characterized by feelings of exhaustion, increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job and reduced professional efficacy.

Though Jacinda was praised for her leadership during the COVID pandemic, there were some pressure points from the business community. Following lockdowns brought on by COVID, New Zealand's corporate community was under stress and agitation. According to reports, the extended lockdown resulted in poor revenues and worry over jobs at the enterprises.

During parliamentary debate earlier, the prime minister’s muttered remark was caught on a hot mic after a series of questions from David Seymour, leader of New Zealand’s libertarian right Act party. “He’s such an arrogant prick," she said as she took her seat next to deputy prime minister and close political ally Grant Robertson. After Seymour demanded an apology, her microphone picked up the remark and recorded it in the official parliamentary record, Hansard.

What's next for New Zealand leadership?

Now, to elect the next leader for the next ten months, Labour party members will vote on 22 January. There are now no obvious frontrunners, but it won't be long until Labour MPs enter the race. Grant Robertson, the deputy prime minister and minister of finance, has already ruled him out from the campaign despite having competed for office in 2014.

What just happened? Reason for Jacinda Ardern's shocking resignation as New Zealand Prime Minister

Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, has shocked the nation by announcing that she will be stepping down from the position as early as February. In a televised statement, she said she will not run for re-election in 2023. Ardern stated that she was confident New Zealand Labor will win in the forthcoming election.

Holding back tears, Ardern said it had been a tough five and a half years as prime minister and that she was only human and needed to step aside.

"This summer, I had hoped to find a way to prepare for not just another year, but another term - because that is what this year requires. I have not been able to do that," Ardern, 42, told a news conference.

"I know there will be much discussion in the aftermath of this decision as to what the so called 'real' reason was... The only interesting angle you will find is that after going on six years of some big challenges, that I am human," she continued. "Politicians are human. We give all that we can, for as long as we can, and then it’s time. And for me, it’s time."

She told her daughter Neve that she was looking forward to being there when she started school this year. She also intends to marry her longtime partner Clarke Gayford soon.

After serving as prime minister for five years, Ardern would have run in a tough 2023 election. Despite winning re-election two years ago with historic proportions, Arden's liberal Labour Party is now behind its conservative opponents as per recent surveys.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ sworn in as new prime minister of Nepal

Ending the dramatic political chaos in Nepal, CPN-Maoist Centre chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal "Prachanda" was on Sunday appointed as the prime minister for the third time after receiving support from opposition CPN-UML and other smaller parties.

In a meeting, CPN-UML led by K P Sharma Oli along with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), CPN-Maoist Centre and other smaller parties decided to form the country's new government under Prachanda's leadership.

CPN-MC General Secretary Dev Gurung said that the CPN-MC, CPN-UML, and other parties staked their claim on the premiership of Prachanda at the President's Office ‘Sheetalniwas’ by submitting 165 lawmakers' signatures under the Constitution's Article 76 (2).

"He has been appointed and commands the support of a big majority of parliament," said Tika Dhakal, an aide to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari. The oath taking ceremony is likely to be held on Monday at 4 pm.

Along with Prachanda, Rastriya Prajatantra Party president Rajendra Lingden, Rastriya Swatantra Party President Ravi Lamichhane and Janata Samajwadi Party president Upendra Yadav had reached the residence of Oli, where they decided to appoint Prachanda as the next prime minister.

In the meeting, Prachanda and Oli reached an understanding that they will lead the new government on a rotational basis and the latter then agreed to give Prachanda the first chance to become the prime minister as per his demand.

"This is the understanding. Remaining work of distribution of key other posts and ministries is still to be worked out," said Gurung after the meeting.

Ruling alliance breaks

On Sunday, Nepal's ruling alliance broke after Nepali Congress president and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba failed to finalise a power-sharing deal with CPN-Maoist Centre chairman Prachanda.

The talks held over the power-sharing deal failed at the prime minister's residence at Baluwatar after Prachanda's offer of becoming the country's next prime minister in the first two and half years of the five-year term was rejected by PM Deuba, said CPN-MC Secretary Ganesh Shah.

Earlier, Prachanda and Deuba had agreed to a tacit understanding that they would become the prime minister of the new government on a rotational basis.

In the talks held on Sunday morning with Prachanda, Nepali Congress had tried to claim the two key posts of the government – the prime minister and president, which Prachanda had refused, leading to the failure of the talks, stated Maoist sources.

The speaker's post was offered by the Nepali Congress to the Maoist Party, which Prachanda immediately rejected. “Now the alliance has broken as the last-minute talks between Deuba and Prachanda failed to strike a deal,” said Shah.

After failing to reach the power-sharing deal with PM Deuba, Prachanda visited CPN-UML chairman Oli at his residence to seek his support for becoming the country's next prime minister.

After the elections, Nepali Congress had emerged as the House of Representatives' largest party with 89 seats, while CPN-UML and CPN-MC were able to clinch 78 and 32 seats, respectively.

"I will make it clear today... that I have decided that I will join the role."

Prayut has been in the center of controversy in the past few years due to corruption charges and he has been the target of multiple trust votes in the parliament. The former army chief came into power in 2014 following a coup but since then, his popularity has taken a massive hit.

Both Prayut and Prawit were part of the Thai military and although they will be competing against each other, both have maintained that the split has not caused harm to their personal relationship.

Malaysia Prime Minister Ibrahim Anwar wins motion of confidence in parliament

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday won the confidence vote in parliament as he successfully cemented his mandate one month after the election’s inconclusive result forced him to join hands with his former political opponents’ corruption-tainted party.

Speaker of the parliament’s lower house Johari Abdul said that the support was affirmed via voice vote on Monday, with members favouring the leadership of Anwar drowning out the opposition.

Anwar said that, in the 222-seat legislature, he had 148 members’ support which gives him a majority of two-thirds required to pass reforms after the general elections that took place on November 19. Anwar’s close ally Johari received 148 votes as he got elected for the speaker’s post on Monday.

According to analysts, the government’s strong majority should help Malaysia gain political stability, after years of unstable governance and four changes in leadership.

In the elections, the Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) coalition of PM Anwar Ibrahim clinched victory over 82 seats, leading ahead of the rivals but fell short of the required majority for the formation of the government.

The results created a situation of political stalemate, as the rival party headed by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that they have received support from the majority, which led to the intervention of Malaysia's king.

Anwar, who had been an opposition leader for a long-time, took the oath as the 10th prime minister of the country on November 24, to lead a unity government.

However, this forced the reformist politician, to enter into an alliance with Barisan Nasional, ex-leader Najib Razak’s graft-tainted party. Currently, Najib is serving a prison term for abuse of power and money laundering related to the financial scandal at state fund 1MDB.

Australian government said that a parliamentary censure motion will be moved against former Liberal prime minister Scott Morrison this week. The move follows findings of an inquiry that Morrison's secret appointment to multiple ministries undermined trust in the government.

Morrison, who lost power in a general election in May, secretly accumulated five ministerial roles during the COVID-19 pandemic: health, finance, treasury, resources and home affairs.

Anthony Albanese, the current prime minister said that the censure motion against Morrison will be introduced in Labor Party-controlled House of Representatives this week. The motion will be moved either by the leader of the house or the attorney general.

"This wasn't about a relationship between the former prime minister and his ministers. It's not a personal relationship between two mates over what happened down the pub," Albanese said during a news conference.

"This is about accountability of our democratic system, and whether the parliament was functioning properly."

An inquiry led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell last week made six recommendations for reform after finding the appointments likely hurt public confidence in government.

Having committed to all six changes, Albanese said legislation to require public notification of ministerial appointments will be introduced this week.

Regulatory changes that don't require legislation have already been made, he added.
