James Tarkowski struck in the 98th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw for Everton against Liverpool as four red cards were issued after full-time on a dramatic final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Liverpool edge seven points clear at the top of the Premier League but were denied a vital win by Tarkowski's blistering strike after Mohamed Salah put Arne Slot's men in front.
Everton's Abdoulaye Doucoure, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were then sent off as tempers flared at the final whistle on a night Liverpool will come to regret if they do not go on to lift a record-equalling 20th English top flight title.
"Very tough," said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. "We saw the celebrations they had in the end so we know how much it meant for them but the fact is it was disappointing for us."
Everton are set to move to a new 53,000 capacity stadium in Liverpool's Bramley Moore Dock next season and gave their home since 1892 a night to remember against their local rivals.
"Mental probably sums it up," said Everton boss David Moyes. "A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside derby and score in the last minute is in a way fitting."
Liverpool's quest for a quadruple came unstuck with a shock FA Cup exit to second-tier strugglers Plymouth on Sunday.
Slot made 10 changes as he resorted to his strongest available side with Salah and Van Dijk among those who had been afforded the weekend off.
Everton's own FA Cup exit to Bournemouth on Saturday had punctured some of their momentum since Moyes' return for a second spell in charge.
The Toffees had won their previous three Premier League games to pull nine points clear of the relegation zone and got off to a flying start.
Liverpool were caught napping on 11 minutes by a quick free-kick by Jarrad Branthwaite to free Beto, who beat Alisson Becker for his third goal in two league games.
The visitors could have been swept away in the feverish atmosphere early on but the Reds immediate response was the making of champions.
Alexis Mac Allister started and finished the move as the diminutive Argentine midfielder ghosted into the penalty area to head in Salah's teasing cross.

<h2>Salah strikes</h2>
Everton then suffered a huge blow as their creative hub Iliman Ndiaye limped off in tears after a long stoppage.
The first half never recovered its flow amid a flurry of fouls and yellow cards as the Premier League fixture with the most red cards in history threatened to boil over once more.
The home crowd briefly erupted once more when Branthwaite fired home only for the celebrations to be cut short by the offside flag.
Slot was growing visibly frustrated with his side's lack of penetration going forward and turned to his bench for an impact with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jones and Darwin Nunez sent on to find a winner.
The changes worked as Salah delivered what looked like a potential title-clinching moment.
Jones and Nunez exchanged a one-two and when the former's shot was blocked by Branthwaite, it fell kindly for Salah to prod in his 27th goal of the season.
Only a brilliant save by Jordan Pickford crucially denied Salah a second late on.
And Everton rallied when Liverpool failed to deal with a hopeful ball into the box and it fell to centre-back Tarkowski to fire into the top corner.
A lengthy VAR check followed for offside and Everton fans had to be cleared off the pitch before the game could restart.
When it did there was more fireworks as Doucoure and Jones were both shown sent off clashing after the Everton midfielder celebrated in front of the travelling Liverpool support.
Slot and Hulshoff also saw reds for taking their protests towards referee Michael Oliver too far after the game.

Premier League: Liverpool held by Everton, four red cards in fiery last Goodison Park derby

Manchester United on Thursday confirmed defender Lisandro Martinez sustained cruciate ligament damage in his left knee during the side's Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.
The Argentina international, 27, was carried off on a stretcher late in the game at Old Trafford after his knee buckled.
<h2>Martinez suffers cruciate ligament damage</h2>
"Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martinez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday's game against Crystal Palace," the club said in a statement.
"Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation.
"Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martinez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."
United boss Ruben Amorim said after the match that he thought it was a "serious situation", adding: "Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player but the character he has, especially in this hard moment."
The result left Amorim's side, who host Leicester in the FA Cup on Friday, 13th in the Premier League.
United signed left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in the January transfer window but there are fresh doubts over the fitness of defender Luke Shaw, who has not started a game for United in almost 12 months.

Premier League: Manchester United confirm Lisandro Martinez cruciate ligament injury

Enzo Maresca hailed Chelsea's mental strength as they came from behind to beat West Ham 2-1 and move into fourth place in the Premier League on Monday.
Maresca's side trailed to Jarrod Bowen's strike late in the first half at Stamford Bridge, sparking jeers from frustrated fans after a lethargic start.
But Maresca's decision to send on Pedro Neto in the second half proved decisive as the Portugal forward bagged Chelsea's equaliser.
As he has been so often over the last two seasons, Cole Palmer was the catalyst for the Blues' 74th-minute winner when his cross deflected in off West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
After a disappointing run of one win in seven league games, Maresca was relieved to see Chelsea get back on track in spirited fashion.
"It is huge. Today was a tough game, especially mentally. When West Ham come here and sit back with 10 players behind the ball, it's not easy. You have to be mentally strong and you need to be patient," he said.
"We had more than 10 shots in the first half. We had clear chances in the first half but unfortunately, we missed the target.
"With some changes the game changed. Overall we completely deserved to win."
Maresca has been concerned that his players were distracted by speculation over potential transfers in and out of Stamford Bridge leading up to Monday's deadline day.
Relieved that the window would be closed after 2300 GMT, the Italian can focus on leading Chelsea's fight to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish.
"It was a good weekend for us in terms of results and we knew today was even better," he said.
"We are there and hopefully we can be there until the end. Playing this kind of game in February, where we are still there, is an important statement."

<h2>Turning point</h2>
Maresca had dropped Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez after his latest costly error in the defeat at Manchester City.
Sanchez's replacement Filip Jorgensen delivered a solid display and Maresca said: "In this moment, Robert needs rest and Filip was very good."
It was a frustrating return to the Bridge for West Ham manager Graham Potter, who was sacked in 2023 after less than seven months in charge of the Blues.
Almost two years after his ruthless dismissal, Potter returned to management with the Hammers last month, but he has mustered just one win from his first five games in all competitions.
"We gave everything. It was relatively even in terms of chances. We come away with nothing in terms of the result but there was lots to be positive about," Potter said.
"You look at the second half. The first goal was a bit of a turning point and we felt it was a foul, you need those things to go your way. We were doing well but we couldn't quite hang on."
Potter was frustrated that a potential Levi Colwill foul on Bowen was not given in the build-up to Chelsea's equaliser.
But with West Ham sitting 10 points clear of the relegation zone, the former Brighton boss has breathing space to reshape the team in his style.
"The shape of the team was really good. You need a bit of luck. We felt unfortunate with the lead-up to the first goal but it wasn't to be," he said.
"The understanding of what we want to do is there, so we have to build on that."

Premier League: Chelsea impress in comeback win over London rivals West Ham

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/arsenal">Arsenal</a> beat <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-city">Manchester City</a> 5-1 to keep their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league">Premier League</a> title hopes alive on Sunday, while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-united">Manchester United</a> slumped to another meek 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace.
In the battle between the top two for the past two seasons, the Gunners prevailed to move within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
"It is a great day for us, especially with the necessity that we had to win the game," said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal were gifted the perfect start inside two minutes as Manuel Akanji lost possession and Kai Havertz squared for Martin Odegaard to open the scoring.
Erling Haaland headed in his 250th career club goal early in the second half to bring City level.&nbsp; But the defending champions are a pale shadow of their former selves this season and conceded within 105 seconds of the restart when Thomas Partey's shot deflected in off John Stones.
"It's happened all season, we are giving away too many things," said City manager Pep Guardiola.
"You cannot lose the control, it's 95 minutes. You cannot finish in the way we played."
Myles Lewis-Skelly would have been suspended if his controversial red card in a 1-0 win at Wolves last weekend had not been overturned.&nbsp; The 18-year-old made the most of that reprieve by curling in Arsenal's third for his first goal for the club.
Havertz fired low and hard into the far corner with City cut open at will by the Arsenal counter-attack on 76 minutes.&nbsp; And another Arsenal teenager rounded off the rout when Ethan Nwaneri curled home in stoppage time.
Defeat leaves City still in fourth but now 15 points off the top and realistically dethroned after four consecutive seasons as champions.
<h2>Meek Manchester United</h2>
Jean Philippe-Mateta was Palace's hero with both goals in the second half as United suffered a fifth defeat in their last six home league games.
Victory takes the Eagles above the Red Devils in the table as Oliver Glasner's side climb to 12th.
Three consecutive wins for United had lifted the mood around Old Trafford but it was back to square one for Ruben Amorim after another home display lacking in creativity and riddled with defensive lapses.
Kobbie Mainoo, who started as a makeshift centre-forward, hit the post with United's best effort of a bright opening before their attacking threat fizzled out.
Mateta opened the scoring on 64 minutes after Maxence Lacroix's header came back off the bar.&nbsp;Worse was to follow for United as Lisandro Martinez had to be stretchered off with what appeared a serious knee injury.
"I think it's a serious situation," said Amorim. "Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player but the character he has, especially in this hard moment."
Palace showed no mercy to secure the three points when Daniel Munoz charged through the middle of the home side's defence and unselfishly squared for Mateta to knock in his sixth goal in five games.
<h2>Spurs ease relegation fears</h2>
Tottenham eased the pressure on under-fire manager Ange Postecoglou and fears they could be dragged into a relegation battle with a 2-0 win at Brentford.
The Bees were left to rue a number of missed chances against an injury-ravaged Tottenham defence.&nbsp;Brentford also lent the visitors a helping hand with the opening goal as Vitaly Janelt headed Son Heung-min's corner into his own net on 29 minutes.
Yoane Wissa's header came off the bar as Brentford pushed for an equaliser.&nbsp; But Spurs picked them off on the counter-attack when Pape Sarr prodded through Valdimarsson's legs from Son's pass.
Victory lifts Tottenham to 14th and 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

PL: Manchester United lose at Palace; Spurs ease relegation fears with win against Brentford

Mohamed Salah's controversial penalty put Liverpool on course for a 2-0 win at Bournemouth as the Premier League leaders moved nine points clear on Saturday.
Arne Slot's side took the lead in the first half when Salah netted with a penalty awarded after Cody Gakpo appeared to trip over his own feet rather than go down from Lewis Cook's challenge.
Bournemouth were left outraged after referee Darren England's on-field decision was upheld by VAR.
"The referee's call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR &ndash; with the challenge deemed to have been a trip by Cook on Gakpo. The VAR also confirmed Gakpo was onside in the build-up," the Premier League said in a statement.
Salah added insult to injury for Bournemouth when he struck again late in the second half to extend Liverpool's lead over second-placed Arsenal.
The Egypt forward has 21 goals from 23 league games this season, reaching the 20-mark for the fifth time in his English top-flight career.
Salah has 178 career Premier League goals, moving him one ahead of Frank Lampard into sixth place in the competition's all-time scoring chart.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 league games, winning 17 of their 23 top-flight matches in a remarkable run since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in the close-season.
Persuing an English record-equalling 20th title and their first in the competition since 2020, Liverpool can sit back and wait to see if old rivals Manchester City can do them a favour when they face Arsenal on Sunday.
On Thursday, quadruple-chasing Liverpool will try to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final at Anfield.
Slot's only concern was an injury that forced off England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second half.
Bournemouth had enjoyed home wins over Manchester City and Arsenal this season, while third-placed Nottingham Forest were thrashed 5-0 on the south-coast last week.
But their 11-match unbeaten run in the league came to an end against a relentless Liverpool side that look destined to end the season with the Premier League crown in the Anfield trophy cabinet.
<h2>Dubious opener</h2>
Bournemouth nearly made the perfect start after just 12 seconds when Trent Alexander-Arnold lost possession to Antoine Semenyo, whose strike forced a good save from Alisson Becker.
Not for the first time in his career, Alexander-Arnold's defensive deficiencies were on display as his poor clearance let in Justin Kluivert before Alisson's save spared his team-mate's blushes.
Semenyo turned away from two Liverpool defender before rattling the woodwork with a stinging drive.
But Liverpool were capable of carving through the Bournemouth defence at will, with Kepa Arrizabalaga keeping out Dominik Szoboszlai's effort.
The Reds were too precise and electric in attack for Bournemouth to hold them at bay and the opener finally arrived in dubious fashion in the 30th minute.
Cook was trailing behind Gakpo as the Dutchman ran through on goal, but he made no contact before the penalty was awarded.
Salah ignored the fuss as he stepped up to smash the spot-kick into the corner.
Rubbing salt into Bournemouth's wounds, David Brooks had an instant equaliser ruled out for offside by VAR.
Liverpool had to ride their luck at times and Alisson denied Semenyo, alertly racing off his line to save at the Ghana winger's feet.
Alexander-Arnold escaped a VAR check for handball, while Alexis Mac Allister avoided a second yellow card following his foul on Brooks.
When Marcus Tavernier's long-range curler cannoned back off the post, Kluivert looked certain to score but he blazed the rebound wide.
Salah made Bournemouth pay for their profligacy in the 75th minute.
Curtis Jones' pass sent Salah racing the area and he guided a fine finish past Kepa in typically predatory style.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah's controversial penalty fires Liverpool nine points clear

Arsenal have successfully appealed against the red card shown to Myles Lewis-Skelly in Saturday's 1-0 win at Wolves, meaning the 18-year-old escapes a three-match ban.
The left-back was sent off in the first half at Molineux for tripping Matt Doherty as Wolves broke clear from an Arsenal corner.
Referee Michael Oliver was not asked to review the incident by the VAR much to the dismay of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
<h2>Arteta delighted with Premier League decision</h2>
"Obviously (I'm) really happy that the decision has been made and Myles is going to be available for us," Arteta told a news conference on Tuesday ahead of Arsenal's Champions League clash with Girona.
Former England captain Alan Shearer was one of a number of outspoken critics of the red card, describing it as "one of the worst decisions that I've seen in a long time".
The Football Association said in a statement: "An independent regulatory commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension."
Lewis-Skelly, who has impressed in his breakthrough season with the Gunners' first team, is now free to face Manchester City and Leicester in the Premier League, either side of the second leg of Arsenal's League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.
Despite playing for nearly half an hour a man down before Wolves' Joao Gomes was also sent off, Arsenal struck late through Riccardo Calafiori to remain six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
After the match, Oliver faced threats and abuse on social media, which were investigated by police.
"We have to try hard to eradicate (abuse) from the game," said Arteta.
"It certainly damages our sport, so let's get it out."

Arsenal are aiming to seal direct qualification to the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday at already-eliminated Girona.
Third in the table, Arteta's side are highly unlikely to miss out on a top eight spot.
Arsenal have never won the Champions League and last lifted a major trophy in 2020 when they won the FA Cup.
"We have been very close to big titles in the last few years but that's very difficult in football," added Arteta.
"Tomorrow we must earn our qualification."

Premier League: Mikel Arteta delighted as Arsenal win appeal over Myles Lewis-Skelly red card

Disgraced former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Premier League</a> referee <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/david-coote" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">David Coote</a> says he hid his sexuality over fears of the abuse he would receive for being gay, apologising for the actions that led to his sacking.
Coote, 42, was suspended in November after footage emerged of him making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in a video that was widely shared on social media.

Further photographs shared by the Sun newspaper in November, which the newspaper said were taken during Euro 2024, appeared to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled-up bank note.
He was dismissed by referees body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last month.
In an interview with the Sun published on Tuesday, Coote revealed he is gay.
"I have received deeply unpleasant abuse during my career as a ref and to add my sexuality to that would have been really difficult," he said.
He added: "I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well -- a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that's led me to a whole course of behaviours."
Coote said he and his late mother had received death threats following decisions he had made on the pitch and cited his own example to show how relentless abuse from the stands and on social media could impact the mental health of officials.
<h2>Escape route</h2>
Coote told the Sun he had used cocaine as an "escape route".
"I've had long periods where I've not used it -&mdash; but it was one of the escape routes I had," he said.
"Just getting away from the stresses, the relentlessness of the job. It fills me with a huge sense of shame to say that I took that route."
In a separate statement released late on Monday, Coote said he had been through one of the most difficult periods of his life.
"I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell way below what was expected of me," he said.
"I am truly sorry for any offence caused by my actions and for the negative spotlight it put on the game that I love. I hope people will understand that they were private moments taken during very low times in my life. They do not reflect who I am today or what I think."
Coote's contract was terminated by the PGMOL in December following its investigation into the initial video, in which he used offensive language about Klopp.
His behaviour is under investigation by the Football Association and European governing body UEFA.
Former Aston Villa and Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger came out in 2014 after his career ended but there has not been an active out gay footballer playing in the Premier League.
Former international rugby referee Nigel Owens, who came out as gay in 2007, said he understands why Coote hid his sexuality.
"People wonder why we are still talking about this, why people are still needing to live the lie," he told the BBC. "You just need to look at some of the comments on there (social media) which are totally unbelievable."

Premier League: Ex-referee David Coote says ‘hid my sexuality over abuse fears’

Leicester pushed Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou closer to the sack with a 2-1 win that extended the north London side's dismal run and lifted the Foxes out of the Premier League relegation zone on Sunday.
Postecoglou's troubled team blew the lead on home turf as they crumbled to a sixth defeat in their last seven league games.

With only one win in their last 11 top-flight matches, Tottenham are languishing in 15th place, just eight points above the bottom three.
It was another woeful result for the beleaguered Postecoglou, who has faced mounting calls for his dismissal throughout a turbulent second season in charge.
Tottenham are dangerously close to being sucked into the relegation battle and trips to Brentford and Aston Villa in their next two league games -- either side of a League Cup semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool -- could decide the Australian's fate.
"It is a disappointing result, but at the same time I can't ask anymore from this group of players. Some of them aren't 100 percent but they are trying their hardest," Postecoglou said.
"Things just aren't falling for us. It is not an atmosphere where it is easy at the moment. We've got to get through this as united as possible."
Tottenham hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg against Liverpool and a Wembley appearance could buy Postecoglou time to get his team back on track.
With 14 players absent for Thursday's Europa League win at Hoffenheim, Tottenham's injury crisis has led to criticism of Postecoglou's tactics and the level of intensity in training.
The former Celtic boss accepts the blame for the rash of injuries, but his claims that Tottenham remain on the right path under his leadership look more questionable with each woeful result that edges him closer to the axe.
While Postecoglou fights to save his job, Leicester manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy can breathe a little easier over his own future.
Van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper in December, had presided over seven successive league defeats before their much-needed success against Tottenham.
Leicester are now one place and one point above the relegation zone and Van Nistelrooy said: "It's a massive win. The players are buying into it. I can only be very proud of this team."
On a filthy, rain-lashed afternoon, a protest banner against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was unveiled by fans before kick-off with the slogan "24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy - time for change".
<h2>'Levy out' chants</h2>
In the 33rd minute, Pedro Porro whipped a pin-point cross into the Leicester area and Richarlison rose to head home from close-range for just his third goal this season.
But Leicester equalised less than 60 seconds after half-time when Bobby De Cordova-Reid's cross was mishandled by Antonin Kinsky, ricocheting off Jamie Vardy's shin as it trickled into the net.
Just four minutes later, Morocco forward Bilal El Khannouss took possession in the Tottenham half and advanced unchecked by Postecoglou's sloppy defence before curling a fine finish past Kinsky.
With chants of "we want Levy out" growing more audible by the second, Postecoglou's furious expression told the story of Tottenham's plight.
Postecoglou's decision to take off Richarlison was jeered by Tottenham fans, whose patience is wearing thin.
Brentford benefitted from penalty controversy to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.&nbsp;
Thomas Frank's team earned a 66th minute penalty when Marc Guehi made a hash of clearing and the panicked Maxence Lacroix fouled Nathan Collins.
Bryan Mbeumo's spot-kick hit the post, but Palace's reprieve was short-lived as VAR ruled Guehi had encroached before the shot.
The Brentford forward gratefully accepted his second chance by sending Palace keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way for his 14th goal this season.
Kevin Schade netted in the 80th minute for Brentford and Palace winger Romain Esse came off the bench to score with his first touch on his debut five minutes later.
Later on Sunday, troubled Manchester United travel to Fulham, while Aston Villa host West Ham.

Premier League: Pressure mounts on Ange Postecoglou after Leicester stun Tottenham Hotpsur

Erling Haaland inspired a Manchester City fightback from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 3-1 and move into the Premier League top four at the Blues' expense on Saturday.<o:p></o:p>
City recovered from a nightmare start to Abdukodir Khusanov's debut as he gifted the visitors the opening goal, scored by Noni Madueke.<o:p></o:p>
Josko Gvardiol levelled for Pep Guardiola's men before Haaland showed his blend of strength and skill to chip in 22 minutes from time.<o:p></o:p>
The Norwegian then turned provider for the in-form Phil Foden to secure City's fourth win in five league games after just one in their previous nine.<o:p></o:p>
Chelsea have won just once in their last seven Premier League games to fall to sixth and will once again reflect on the need to upgrade on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his positioning led to Haaland's crucial goal.<o:p></o:p>
City's victory puts them back in pole position to qualify for next season's Champions League, just days before they try to save themselves in this season's competition.<o:p></o:p>
The English champions must beat Club Brugge on Wednesday to reach the playoff round after collapsing from 2-0 up to lose 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.<o:p></o:p>

"After (conceding the goal), emotionally, we came back," said Guardiola. "It's really, really important for our final Wednesday and for the next games."<o:p></o:p>
Guardiola threw in new signings Khusanov and Omar Marmoush for their debuts.<o:p></o:p>
But that decision backfired spectacularly in the case of Khusanov inside three minutes.<o:p></o:p>
The first ever Uzbek to play in the Premier League did not properly connect with an attempted header back towards his own goal and Nicolas Jackson pounced to tee up Madueke for a tap in.<o:p></o:p>
Moments later Khusanov was fortunate to get away with only a yellow card for chopping down Cole Palmer.<o:p></o:p>
By contrast, Marmoush was showing why only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane had scored more Bundesliga goals than him this season prior to a &pound;59 million ($72.6 million) move from Eintracht Frankfurt.<o:p></o:p>
The Egyptian thought he had equalised when he pounced to fire home the rebound after Sanchez parried Ilkay Gundogan's effort, but was flagged offside.<o:p></o:p>
"I think in the first half you could see he has something special. That is obviously the reason Manchester City bought him," said Haaland of his new strike partner.<o:p></o:p>
<h2>City go direct<o:p></o:p></h2>
Gvardiol's marauding runs from left-back were causing City's biggest threat.<o:p></o:p>
Chelsea did not heed a warning as the Croatian prodded inches wide with his left foot after storming into the box.<o:p></o:p>
Just before half-time, Gvardiol had a simple task for his fifth Premier League goal of the season.<o:p></o:p>
Matheus Nunes this time made the break from full-back and after he was denied by Sanchez, the ball fell for Gvardiol to roll into an empty net.<o:p></o:p>
Guardiola cut his losses with Khusanov at the start of the second period. He was replaced by John Stones and City were rarely troubled thereafter at the back.<o:p></o:p>
Marmoush was close to a perfect start to his City career when he blasted wide from Haaland's pass after the Norwegian was picked out by a long ball from Ederson.<o:p></o:p>
But again, Chelsea did not learn their lesson. Moments later from another Ederson clearance, Haaland outmuscled Trevoh Chalobah and then chipped Sanchez, who had charged out of his goal and ended up in no man's land.<o:p></o:p>
"I think the second goal changed the mood," said Maresca. "We trust Robert for sure but in the same moment he is aware that he is making mistakes."<o:p></o:p>
Despite City's struggles, Haaland has remained a reliable source of goals as he took his tally for the season to 24, six of which have come in the last six games.<o:p></o:p>

Sports, Football: City's victory puts them back in pole position to qualify for next season's UCL, just days before they try to save themselves in this season's competition.

Erling Haaland inspired a Manchester City fightback from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 3-1 and move into the Premier League top four at the Blues' expense on Saturday. City recovered from a nightmare start to Abdukodir Khusanov's debut as he gifted the visitors the opening goal, scored by Noni Madueke. Josko Gvardiol levelled for Pep Guardiola's men before Haaland showed his blend of strength and skill to chip in 22 minutes from time. The Norwegian then turned provider for the in-form Phil Foden to secure City's fourth win in five league games after just one in their previous nine. Chelsea have won just once in their last seven Premier League games to fall to sixth and will once again reflect on the need to upgrade on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his positioning led to Haaland's crucial goal. City's victory puts them back in pole position to qualify for next season's Champions League, just days before they try to save themselves in this season's competition. The English champions must beat Club Brugge on Wednesday to reach the playoff round after collapsing from 2-0 up to lose 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in midweek. Also read | Mbappe's hat trick against Valladolid steers Madrid to four-point lead at top "After (conceding the goal), emotionally, we came back," said Guardiola. "It's really, really important for our final Wednesday and for the next games." Guardiola threw in new signings Khusanov and Omar Marmoush for their debuts. But that decision backfired spectacularly in the case of Khusanov inside three minutes. The first ever Uzbek to play in the Premier League did not properly connect with an attempted header back towards his own goal and Nicolas Jackson pounced to tee up Madueke for a tap in. Moments later Khusanov was fortunate to get away with only a yellow card for chopping down Cole Palmer. By contrast, Marmoush was showing why only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane had scored more Bundesliga goals than him this season prior to a £59 million ($72.6 million) move from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Egyptian thought he had equalised when he pounced to fire home the rebound after Sanchez parried Ilkay Gundogan's effort, but was flagged offside. "I think in the first half you could see he has something special. That is obviously the reason Manchester City bought him," said Haaland of his new strike partner. City go direct Gvardiol's marauding runs from left-back were causing City's biggest threat. Chelsea did not heed a warning as the Croatian prodded inches wide with his left foot after storming into the box. Just before half-time, Gvardiol had a simple task for his fifth Premier League goal of the season. Matheus Nunes this time made the break from full-back and after he was denied by Sanchez, the ball fell for Gvardiol to roll into an empty net. Guardiola cut his losses with Khusanov at the start of the second period. He was replaced by John Stones and City were rarely troubled thereafter at the back. Marmoush was close to a perfect start to his City career when he blasted wide from Haaland's pass after the Norwegian was picked out by a long ball from Ederson. But again, Chelsea did not learn their lesson. Moments later from another Ederson clearance, Haaland outmuscled Trevoh Chalobah and then chipped Sanchez, who had charged out of his goal and ended up in no man's land. "I think the second goal changed the mood," said Maresca. "We trust Robert for sure but in the same moment he is aware that he is making mistakes." Despite City's struggles, Haaland has remained a reliable source of goals as he took his tally for the season to 24, six of which have come in the last six games. And he created he third goal as his layoff sent Foden clear to slot home his sixth goal in his last four league games. PL: Erling Haaland leads Manchester City revival to beat Chelsea

Cody Gakpo struck twice as Premier League leaders Liverpool thrashed Ipswich 4-1 to maintain their six-point lead over Arsenal, who survived Myles Lewis-Skelly's controversial red card to snatch a 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday.
Arne Slot's side cruised to their second successive league victory thanks to a first half goal-spree at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai's 11th-minute opener fizzed past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton from Ibrahima Konate's assist.
Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool's advantage in the 35th minute with a fierce strike for his 23rd goal in all competitions this term.
It was also the Egypt forward's 100th Premier League goal at Anfield.
Gakpo killed off Ipswich before half-time when he bundled home after Walton parried Szoboszlai's shot in the 44th minute.
The Dutch forward netted again in the 66th minute, heading past Walton from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.
Jacob Greaves' stoppage-time diving header was little consolation for third-bottom Ipswich, who have conceded 10 goals in their last two league games.
Liverpool's 16th win from 22 league games this season keeps them on course for a first English title since 2020.
The quadruple-chasing Reds have a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal, who left it late before keeping the pressure on the leaders.
Arsenal, without ill captain Martin Odegaard, had Lewis-Skelly contentiously sent off for tripping Matt Doherty to stop a Wolves counter-attack in the 43rd minute.
It was a cynical challenge but Arsenal were furious, protesting that the tackle was too far from goal to warrant a red card.
The Premier League Match Centre confirmed on social media that the 18-year-old defender was sent off for "serious foul play".
But Wolves were also reduced t0 10 men in the 70th minute when Joao Gomes earned a second booking for a foul on Jurrien Timber.
And Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori won it for Arsenal in the 74th minute with a half-volley that went in off the far post.

Manchester City sign Egyptian forward Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt

Ruben Amorim on Wednesday (Jan 21) sought to clarify his bombshell statement that his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-united">Manchester United</a> side are "the worst team" in the club's history, with the manager accepting a share of responsibility for the crisis at Old Trafford.
United's 3-1 defeat against Brighton on Sunday was their sixth loss in their past nine Premier League games under&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruben-amorim">Amorim</a>, who arrived in November to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.

The club, languishing in 13th place in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league">Premier League</a> table, face Scottish giants Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, a competition in which they are well-positioned to qualify for the knockout stages.
Former Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim, 39, addressed his post-Brighton comments during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.
"I was talking more about me than the players," he said. "I also talked in the same response (that) I was not helping my players and if you look around, every time I speak, and I speak a lot, every time you push that the players are not good enough I never put the spot(light) on my players."
He added, "I'm frustrated sometimes and sometimes I should not say it in those terms but it is what it is and sometimes it's really hard to hide the frustration in some moments. But the good thing is that I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room five minutes before.
"The response was quite normal because I'm really blunt with my players".
<h2>'Nervous' United</h2>
Amorim said his underperforming side were "too nervous, really anxious" and games at Old Trafford were even tougher.
"We are more nervous playing at home than away because we lost a lot of games, like four games in five. So it's getting harder," he said.
"But we can improve. I think if we don't suffer the first goal, like in the fourth minute, and I remember like it's fourth minute, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and then it's really hard to calm down the team.
"The first thing in my mind is they (the opposition) cannot score. We need to score the first one. If we score the first one, I think that will change and we'll play better at home in the beginning."
Former United captain Harry Maguire, speaking at the same press conference, said the players have "got to look at ourselves".
"We've got to take responsibility on ourselves and as an individual that's what I do. I go home and think about how I can help this team improve and get back to where we want to get back to and that's challenging," he said.
Amorim shut down a question over the potential sale of Alejandro Garnacho -- the Argentine winger has been linked with moves to Napoli and Chelsea during the January transfer window.
"I understand the question but let's focus on the game," he said. "I don't want to talk about that, especially before a game. Our focus is that our players are here to play. We need to improve and we need to win games to have that feeling of winning. Let's focus on that."

Premier League: Manchester City sign Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens

Chelsea overcame a howler from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to beat relegation-threatened Wolves 3-1 on Monday, ending a five-game winless run to climb back into the Premier League's top four.
Enzo Maresca's team were just two points behind leaders Liverpool in mid-December, raising hopes of an unlikely title challenge before losing their way.
Now they are back on track to qualify for next season's Champions League after second-half goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke spared Sanchez's blushes.
The Spanish goalkeeper had dropped the ball moments before half-time, allowing Matt Doherty to cancel out Tosin Adarabioyo's opener.
Maresca said Chelsea had dominated the first 40 minutes before problems that have haunted them in recent weeks returned.
"We lost a little bit of confidence, we conceded a goal and we started to struggle a little bit and then the second half I think we started quite well and then after the second and third goals the game was in control," he told Sky Sports.
He added: "In the past five games we didn't win but I said many times that the performance was there. We created many chances, we didn't score and tonight finally we scored three goals."
Chelsea's top-scorer Cole Palmer, a doubt before the game, was fit to start as Maresca made five changes from last week's draw against Bournemouth including bringing in centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, recalled from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
The home side dominated possession in the early stages and Palmer had a couple of early efforts, curling one wide and forcing Jose Sa into a diving save.
The home side were rewarded for their dominance midway through the first half when Adarabioyo fired home for his first Premier League goal for the club.
The defender controlled the ball well after it was deflected into his path from Reece James's shot from the edge of the box.
A number of Chelsea players were in offside positions in a crowded penalty area and the flag was raised but the on-field decision was overturned after a VAR check.

<h2>Sanchez blunder</h2>
Wolves, anaemic in attack for most of the first half, came back into the game as half-time approached, scoring with their first shot on target thanks to Sanchez's error.
The visitors won a corner and the goalkeeper dropped the inswinging delivery from Matheus Cunha under intense pressure when he could have punched clear, with Doherty poking home.
The home side started the second half brightly and were back in front on the hour mark when Cucurella hooked home on the stretch after Madueke's cross was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Five minutes later Chelsea had a two-goal cushion when Madueke scored his fourth goal of the season against Wolves, heading home Chalobah's goal-bound effort.
Sanchez palmed a Cunha shot behind with 10 minutes to go but Chelsea were largely comfortable despite the occasional minor scare and leapfrogged Newcastle and Manchester City, whom they face next.
Former Leicester boss Maresca, in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, stubbornly insisted his team were not in the title race even when they were flying high after five straight wins from late November.
Starting with a 0-0 draw at Everton just before Christmas, they took just three points from five games before returning to winning ways on Monday.
Wolves, who have conceded a league-high 51 goals, are outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone after three straight defeats following a bright start for new manager Vitor Pereira.

"We lost a little bit of confidence, we conceded a goal and we started to struggle a little bit and then the second half I think we started quite well and then after the second and third goals the game was in control," he told Sky Sports. He added: "In the past five games we didn't win but I said many times that the performance was there. We created many chances, we didn't score and tonight finally we scored three goals." Chelsea's top-scorer Cole Palmer, a doubt before the game, was fit to start as Maresca made five changes from last week's draw against Bournemouth including bringing in centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, recalled from his loan spell at Crystal Palace. READ MORE | Virat Kohli to play in Delhi's Ranji Trophy match vs Railways Sanchez blunder Wolves, anaemic in attack for most of the first half, came back into the game as half-time approached, scoring with their first shot on target thanks to Sanchez's error. ‘We are the worst team in Manchester United history,’ Ruben Amorim

Darwin Nunez struck twice in the final minutes as Liverpool got their Premier League title charge back on track with a dramatic 2-0 win against Brentford on Saturday.
Arne Slot's side were in danger of enduring a third successive league draw after wasting a host of chances at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Of all the candidates to end Liverpool's wobble, Uruguay striker Nunez would have been low down the list given his struggles over the last two seasons.
But he rode to Liverpool's rescue with a stoppage-time brace that lifted the Reds' seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal.
The Gunners can close the gap back to four points with a win against Aston Villa in Saturday's late game.
But Liverpool will hold a game in hand on Arsenal and have the destiny of the title still firmly in their grasp thanks to the much-maligned Nunez.
Slot had admitted he couldn't find a way to get the best out of the former Benfica star earlier this week.
The 25-year-old had scored just four goals in 26 games in all competitions prior to his unexpected double in west London.
Slot will gratefully take Nunez's contribution as Liverpool's first win in three league games kept them on course for a first title since 2020.
Since the turn of the year, Liverpool had only won one game in four in all competitions, beating minnows Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round.
They had drawn their previous two league games against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, while also losing 1-0 at Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg, making this victory essential to steady their nerves.
Brentford kicked off with the joint-best home record in the Premier League, an impressive statistic they underlined by scoring twice in the closing stages to draw 2-2 with Manchester City on Tuesday.
<h2>Nunez late show</h2>
Thomas Frank's side should have had Liverpool on the ropes when Mikkel Damsgaard failed to convert Mads Roerslev's ball across the six-yard box.
Brentford threatened again as Bryan Mbeumo forced Alisson Becker into action with a drive from the edge of the area.
Luis Diaz glanced wide from Ibrahima Konate's pass before Ryan Gravenberch's long-range blast was tipped away by Mark Flekken.
Konate shot wastefully wide and Brentford captain Christian Norgaard headed over as chances kept coming at both ends.
Liverpool had been denied three points at Forest by Matz Sels' superb saves and they were being frustrated by another in-form 'keeper, with Flekken saving well from Dominik Szoboszlai's low shot.
Szoboszlai was inches away from breaking the deadlock when the Liverpool midfielder slammed a 25-yard strike against the bar.
Cody Gakpo should have done better than poke narrowly wide from Salah's pass after Liverpool carved open the Brentford rearguard.
Early in the second half, Salah's shot deflected off Keane Lewis-Potter and was heading towards goal until Nathan Collins made a last-ditch clearance off the line.
Slot sent on Andrew Robertson and Nunez, who immediately headed wide from the Scot's cross to the visible dismay of his manager.
Alisson saved twice in quick succession from Mbeumo's free-kick and the Brentford forward's follow-up effort.

Liverpool's shot tally had reached 34 without a goal and they were nearly punished for their profligacy when Mbeumo's header was saved by Alisson.
As the seconds ticked away, Liverpool grew more desperate and Trent Alexander-Arnold's 30-yard rocket did nothing to ease their angst as it fizzed just wide.
But their pressure was finally rewarded in stoppage-time as Alexander-Arnold's cross picked out Nunez and he kept his cool to slot home from close range.
Slot danced a jubilant jig on the touchline and the Dutchman was celebrating again moments later as Harvey Elliott's pass found Nunez inside the area and he lashed a blistering finish past Flekken.

Premier League: Diallo’s hat trick rescues United against Southampton

Arsenal came from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1 and reignite their Premier League title challenge on Wednesday as Alexander Isak fired Newcastle into the top four.
Elsewhere, David Moyes endured a miserable return to the Everton dugout, watching his toothless side lose 1-0 to Aston Villa at Goodison Park.
Arsenal's victory at the Emirates lifts them four points behind Liverpool, who drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, and ends a winless run of three matches in all competitions.
Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead in the 25th minute but the home side were level 15 minutes later when Gabriel's header from a corner rebounded off Dominic Solanke for an own goal.
The turnaround was complete just before half-time when Leandro Trossard blasted home across new Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Arsenal squandered a series of chances to increase their lead and breathed a sigh of relief when Pedro Porro hit the post deep into stoppage time.
Mikel Arteta's team are now on 43 points after 21 matches, four points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
The Arsenal boss his team were "outstanding".
"We had some big chances and big situations. At the end we had to suffer more than we wanted," he told the BBC.
"When you have opportunities (to close the gap) you have to take them. We are on a really consistent run in the Premier League. It's about recovery tomorrow and Aston Villa on Saturday, going and going."
But defeat is another bitter blow for injury-ravaged Tottenham, who have now taken just five points from a possible 27 over their past nine Premier League games and have slumped to 13th in the table.
"Nowhere near good enough, especially in the first half. We were too passive," said Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

<h2>Record-chasing Isak</h2>
Red-hot Isak found the net for the eighth league match in a row in a 3-0 win over Wolves as Newcastle leapfrogged faltering Chelsea into fourth spot in the table.
The Swedish international put the home side ahead in the 34th minute when his shot took a huge deflection off Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, leaving Jose Sa wrong-footed.
Isak doubled Newcastle's lead shortly before the hour mark, controlling Bruno Guimaraes' pass before firing home for his 15th league goal of the season and Anthony Gordon added a third.
"I feel amazing," said Isak, who has Jamie Vardy's record of scoring in 11 straight Premier League games in his sights.
"Individually I feel free and confident but looking at the team we are doing so well as well, defending and with threats going forward. It is a team and I have to keep contributing with goals."
Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins broke the deadlock at Goodison Park in the 51st minute, slotting past England teammate Jordan Pickford after he was sent clear by Morgan Rogers.
Everton huffed and puffed but showed a lack of creativity -- unsurprising for a team who have scored just 15 league goals in their 20 matches this season.
The result lifts Unai Emery's Villa to seventh in the table but Everton remain in deep trouble, just one point above the relegation zone in 16th spot.
The Liverpool club's new owners, the American-based Friedkin Group, sacked Sean Dyche last week and brought back 61-year-old Moyes, who enjoyed success during an 11-year stint at Goodison Park from 2002 to 2013.
But the Toffees, ever-present in the top flight since 1954, have battled relegation for the past three seasons and are once again in deep trouble.
"Obviously it's been a bit of a whirlwind," Moyes said. "Sean Dyche left a group of players that have great character and a great attitude.
"I'm really pleased to take over that. What I need to do is add quality and find a way of getting results but you can't change the whole thing around straight away."
Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester suffered their sixth straight league defeat, losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace to leave the Foxes second from bottom.&nbsp;
Jean-Philippe Mateta put the visitors ahead early in the second half and Marc Guehi made the points safe with a late second.

Sports, Football: Arsenal's victory at the Emirates lifts them four points behind Liverpool, who drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest and ends a winless run of three matches.

Premier League: Arsenal reignite title charge with Spurs win; Isak stars again

Phil Foden admitted <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/manchester-city" rel="dofollow">Manchester City</a>'s bid to win a fifth successive <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/premier-league" rel="dofollow">Premier League</a> title is over after the troubled champions drew 2-2 at Brentford.
Foden netted twice to put City in control against the Bees on Tuesday, but they collapsed late in the game, with Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard earning a point for the home side.
Sixth-placed City are languishing 12 points behind leaders <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/liverpool" rel="dofollow">Liverpool</a> and Foden conceded they will have to focus on finishing in the top four rather than winning another title.

"The title? Yeah, yeah, it's done for sure, it's done," the England forward said.
"We know. We're not stupid. So we've got to aim for top four, that's the next target now and then obviously Champions League as well. So it's not as if the season has gone.
"But we've got to be realistic, haven't we? The performances have not been good enough to get up there.
"The top four is our aim now and then see where we can be in the other trophies. We can't dwell on it. We've got to try and aim for the top four now and make things right."
City are two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the battle to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Foden said City are trying to learn the lessons of their dismal decline, which has come as a huge shock to Pep Guardiola's team after a dynastic run of six titles in seven seasons.
"Like you said, I've not been in this situation before where I've lost this many games and been in this situation," said Foden, whose side return to action at struggling Ipswich on Sunday.
The 2023 winners also face a vital Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on January 22, with their place in the last 16 far from assured.
"It's a learning curve and it's just about how you get back to your best, not just me, but the team as well. And how we come back from this," Foden said.

Chris Wood fired Forest in front early on at a raucous City Ground, but Liverpool dominated almost the entire 97 minutes and got back on level terms thanks to substitute Diogo Jota's goal with his first touch.
Only a brilliant goalkeeping performance from Matz Sels denied the leaders victory, but the point maintained a six-point cushion over Forest for Arne Slot's men, who also have a game in hand.
Forest had won their last seven games in all competitions to raise the possibility of matching Leicester's incredible title win of 2015/16.
The in-form Wood had the home fans believing after just eight minutes when he slotted in Anthony Elanga's pass.
Liverpool enjoyed over 70 percent possession and had 23 shots on goal but only posed a serious threat in front of goal after the break.
Jota had only been on the field a matter of seconds when he nodded in Kostas Tsimikas' corner.
Sels then made incredible saves to deny Jota, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo a winner, while Salah also had a goalbound effort cleared off the line.
"I could not have asked for more," said Slot. "Second half was outstanding.
"There are not many teams that can create so many chances against an opponent so defensively strong. Unfortunately we couldn't get a second."
Liverpool's second consecutive league draw opens the door for Arsenal to cut the gap at the top to four points when they host Tottenham in the north London derby on Wednesday.

<h2>Man City, Chelsea stumble</h2>
Any suggestion City could get themselves back in the title race was ended in a late collapse in west London as Brentford struck twice in the final 10 minutes for a deserved point.
Phil Foden's double had City on course for a fourth consecutive win after a run of just one victory in 13 games.
However, the English champions' defending was not convincing all night and they were punished as Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard netted for the Bees.
Foden's return to the form that saw him crowned Premier League player of the year last season was the one positive for City.
But Pep Guardiola will reflect on a missed opportunity to make up ground on the top four as City remain down in sixth, 12 points off the top.
Foden produced a brilliant deft touch from Kevin De Bruyne's inviting delivery and then smashed in a rebound for his fourth goal in five league games.
Brentford wasted a host of chances before conceding but finally got some reward for their attacking endeavour when Wissa slotted in from Mads Roerslev's cross to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.
They completed the comeback in stoppage time when Norgaard's header had too much power for Stefan Ortega.
"We are not (at our best) and we didn't take the right decisions," said Guardiola. "It's fine, it's not a good place to come. Unfortunately, we couldn't win."
Fourth-placed Chelsea's miserable run extended to five league games without a win but they were grateful for captain Reece James' stoppage-time equaliser salvaging a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth.
Cole Palmer's cool finish from Nicolas Jackson's through ball had given Chelsea the perfect start.
But Bournemouth hit back through Justin Kluivert's penalty, before Antoine Semenyo's blistering near-post effort put the visitors in front.
James has endured another injury-hit season but showed his quality by curling home a free-kick at the death.
West Ham boss Graham Potter enjoyed a winning home debut as Fulham were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium.
Carlos Soler, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta were on target for the Hammers to take Potter's men above Manchester United and Tottenham into 12th.

Premier League: Liverpool frustrated by Forest, Man City blow late lead at Brentford

Graham Potter suffered a painful start to his West Ham reign as Aston Villa's late surge sealed a 2-1 win in the FA Cup third round on Friday.
Potter was hired by the Hammers on Thursday to replace Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked earlier this week after just six months in charge.
But the former Chelsea manager was unable to make a winning return to the dug-out as West Ham squandered the first half lead given to them by Lucas Paqueta.

On a freezing evening at Villa Park, Unai Emery's men emphasised the size of the task facing Potter with a second half fightback that exposed West Ham's defensive flaws.
Amadou Onana equalised before Morgan Rogers bagged the winner to leave Potter holding his head in frustration.
The former Brighton boss is back in management for the first time since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023.
Potter lasted less than seven months at Chelsea, losing 11 times in his 31 games in charge and slumping to 11th place in the top-flight despite a &pound;288 million ($351 million) spending spree in his one transfer window.
Potter has tried to learn from the "pain" of that failure, vowing to "come back stronger" after an experience that may have cost him a chance at the England job when Thomas Tuchel was hired last year.
Potter had just one training session with his players before the trip to Villa and was without key forwards Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.
Under the circumstances, he can be encouraged by West Ham's attacking play but fixing their issues at the back must be top of his to-do list.
"Overall, disappointed to go out, but lots of positives in the game," Potter said.
"The start was really good but in the second half Aston Villa stepped-up and pushed us back a bit too much. That's something we will have to improve."
Lopetegui was unable to build on the solid foundations left by David Moyes, who won the Europa Conference League in 2023 before stepping down at the end of last season amid fan complaints about his dour style of play.
Potter certainly looks capable of banishing those concerns as West Ham attacked Villa with verve in the first half.
Paqueta was close to giving Potter a dream start when the Brazilian's strike from the edge of the area flashed just wide.
It was a warning Villa failed to heed as Paqueta opened the scoring in the ninth minute.
Crysencio Summerville teased Villa's Ian Maatsen with an incisive run into the area before slipping a pass to Paqueta, who planted a clinical finish past Robin Olsen.
Potter celebrated in fist-pumping style but there was a setback for the new manager when Germany striker Niclas Fullkrug limped off soon after the goal.
Paqueta was a constant threat and he forced Olsen to save after another menacing raid.
But Villa's second half surge was rewarded in the 71st minute.
Tyrone Mings flicked on a corner to Maatsen and Fabianski could only push his shot to Amadou Onana, who reacted quickest to poke home from close-range.
West Ham were furious, claiming the corner should not have been awarded because Boubacar Kamara's shot was not deflected.
But Villa scented blood and went for the kill in the 76th minute.
Ollie Watkins burst into the West Ham area and pulled his pass back to Rogers for a clinical strike into the bottom corner.
Third tier Wycombe enjoyed a surprise 2-0 win over Championship side Portsmouth in Friday's other third round tie.

FA Cup: Graham Potter starts West Ham reign with loss

West Ham sacked manager Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday after just 22 games in charge, with former Chelsea boss Graham Potter expected to replace him at the London Stadium.
The Hammers are 14th in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone, after just six wins in 20 league matches during the Spaniard's tenure.
A 4-1 hammering at champions Manchester City on Saturday was the final straw for club chiefs.

Lopetegui, 58, took training as usual on Tuesday and reported for work on Wednesday to be officially told his spell in charge was over.
"West Ham United can confirm that head coach Julen Lopetegui&nbsp;has today (Wednesday) left the club," the Hammers said in a statement.
"The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the club's ambitions and the club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives."
West Ham were among the biggest spenders in the Premier League in the summer transfer window, splashing out around &pound;125 million ($155 million) on players including Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug.
But Lopetegui won just one of his first six league games and oversaw several heavy defeats, including a 5-2 loss to Arsenal and a 5-0 drubbing by Liverpool, both at home.
The former Real Madrid and Spain boss was appointed in May last year to replace David Moyes, who left at the end of last season after a second spell at the London club.
Under the Scot, West Ham qualified for European competition for three consecutive seasons, winning the Europa Conference League in 2023 to secure the club's first major trophy in 43 years.
Lopetegui, who had previously managed Wolves in the Premier League, said at the time of his appointment he had other opportunities but he was "very happy that West Ham chose me because I chose West Ham too".
In their search for a replacement for Lopetegui, the club reportedly spoke to former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca and ex-Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier.
But Potter is the hot favourite to replace Lopetegui, with the club understood to have held talks with the former Chelsea and Brighton manager about becoming their new manager, initially on a short-term deal.
Potter, 49, has been out of management since he was sacked by Chelsea in April 2023, just seven months into a five-year contract. He won a mere 12 of his 31 matches in charge.
The Englishman began his managerial career at Swedish club Ostersund and had successful spells with Swansea and Brighton before taking over at Stamford Bridge.
West Ham face Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Friday prior to Premier League matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace.
Lopetegui is the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season, following the sackings of Erik ten Hag (Manchester United), Steve Cooper (Leicester), Gary O'Neil (Wolves) and Russell Martin (Southampton).

"West Ham United can confirm that head coach Julen Lopetegui has today (Wednesday) left the club," the Hammers said in a statement. "The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the club's ambitions and the club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives." West Ham were among the biggest spenders in the Premier League in the summer transfer window, splashing out around £125 million ($155 million) on players including Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Niclas Fullkrug. Nottingham Forest's stunning season continued with a 3-0 victory at Wolves on Monday to give manager Nuno Espirito Santo a winning return to Molineux.
England international Morgan Gibbs-White and the in-form Chris Wood struck before half-time to take Forest to within six points of leaders Liverpool, who they host in their next Premier League game.
Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi rounded off the scoring and a sixth consecutive win for Forest in stoppage time.
<h2>Wolves hang in relegation battle</h2>
Defeat leaves Wolves outside the relegation zone only thanks to goal difference as they suffered a first defeat under new boss Vitor Pereira.
Forest remain third in the table but move level on points with Arsenal.
Even if a shock title challenge proves beyond Espirito Santo's men, they are building up an impressive cushion in the race for Champions League football next season.
They are five points clear of fifth-placed Newcastle and six in front of struggling champions Manchester City in sixth.
A top-four finish would guarantee a return to the continent's elite competition for the first time in 45 years for the two-time European champions.
However, fifth could also be good enough depending on how English club fare in European competition this season.
"We need to stay humble. We haven't achieved anything yet, we need to work until the end and this can lead us to good moments," said Espirito Santo.
Gibbs-White savoured his return to the club where he spent the early part of his career.
In front of the watching new England manager Thomas Tuchel, the midfielder did his case for further international recognition no harm with a cool finish from Antony Elanga's pass.
Forest's unexpected rise from battling relegation until the final day of last season into Champions League contenders has been build on a solid defence and Wood's purple patch.
The New Zealand international turned in Callum Hudson-Odoi's low cross for his 12th goal of the season to double the visitors' lead just before half-time.
Wolves pressed and probed for a way back into the game after the break but were toothless in the absence of talisman Matheus Cunha through suspension.
Mats Sels was forced into one brilliant save to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen to preserve a ninth clean sheet of the season and fourth in a row.
That solidity is familiar to Wolves fans from Espirito Santo's time in charge of their club between 2017 and 2021.

The Portuguese coach led Wanderers from the Championship into Europe for the first time in 39 years.

Sports, Football: England international Morgan Gibbs-White and the in-form Chris Wood struck before half-time to take Forest to within six points of leaders Liverpool.

Wolves hang in relegation battle Defeat leaves Wolves outside the relegation zone only thanks to goal difference as they suffered a first defeat under new boss Vitor Pereira. Premier League: Nottingham Forest tame Wolves to maintain unlikely title challenge

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City pummelled West Ham 4-1 in the Premier League on Saturday while in-form Newcastle inflicted another painful defeat on Ange Postecoglou's struggling Tottenham.
Chelsea's recent woes continued with a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace, meaning they have taken just two points from four games over the festive period.
Defending champions City&nbsp;returned to winning ways at Leicester last week after a long lean spell and picked up three more points against Julen Lopetegui's West Ham at the Etihad.
Pep Guardiola's men took the lead in the 10th minute when Vladimir Coufal deflected Savinho's cross past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.&nbsp;
Savinho also had a hand in the second goal, shortly before half-time, beating his man twice before crossing to Haaland, who lost Max Kilman and headed home.
The same players combined for City's third in the 55th minute, before Phil Foden joined the party for their fourth. The home side were denied a clean sheet by Niclas Fuellkrug.
West Ham appeared to have turned the corner last month but they have now conceded nine goals in two games following a 5-0 mauling at home by Premier League leaders Liverpool.

<h2>Angriest in career</h2>
In the early kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Newcastle came from behind to clinch a fifth straight Premier League win and heap more misery on injury-hit Spurs.
The home side went ahead in the fourth minute through Dominic Solanke.
Newcastle levelled two minutes later when Antony Gordon arrowed an effort into the bottom corner but Postecoglou stood in disbelief on the touchline looking at referee Andrew Madley after Joelinton intercepted Lucas Bergvall's pass with his hand in the build-up.
VAR deemed Joelinton's arm to be in a natural position and the contact to be accidental, which provoked a furious reaction from Tottenham's bench and they were up in arms midway through the first half when the already-booked Dan Burn avoided a second yellow card for handball by the centre circle.
In-form Alexander Isak scored what turned out to be the winner towards the end of the first half.
The victory leaves Newcastle in fifth spot, which may yet prove enough to secure a place in the Champions League next season, but Spurs have slumped to 12th in the table after five defeats in seven matches.
Postecoglou said he was proud of his players but was the "angriest I think I have ever been in my career".
"I think it's clear," said the Australian. "Now whether people agree with me or not whether it wasn't handball or it was accidental, I'm just not interested in any of that discussion.
"I know what everyone wants me to say, but all I'll say is that on any other day, on a fair and even playing ground, we would have won that game. Simple as that."
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted the ball hit Joelinton's arm but said he was not in control of the referee's decision.
"I believe his arm is down in a natural position and the referee and VAR have followed the rules and protocols that are in place," he said. "That's why it is given."
Enzo Maresca's Chelsea were closing in on Liverpool just two weeks ago but are now nine points behind the Reds, having played two games more.
The Italian made six changes for the match at Selhurst Park and his side took the lead when Jadon Sancho drove down the left and found Cole Palmer, who sliced a low shot into the bottom right corner.
The visitors enjoyed the bulk of possession but they could not capitalise and Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled in the 82nd minute.
Aston Villa beat relegation-threatened Leicester 2-1 at home with goals from Ross Barkley and Leon Bailey.
Brentford recorded a rare win on the road, smashing bottom side Southampton 5-0, and Bournemouth beat Everton 1-0.
Second-placed Arsenal are in action at Brighton in the 1730 GMT kick-off while Premier League leaders Liverpool host crisis-hit Manchester United on Sunday.

"It's my last year in the club so you want to do something special for the city," Salah told Sky Sports in an interview released on Friday.<o:p></o:p>
"We waited for that title for 30 years or so. So, to win it and it was the pandemic at that time, we didn't really have time to celebrate it in the right way. It's not a nice thing to do, so hopefully we can do it this year."<o:p></o:p>
The Egyptian has been in red-hot form this season and has scored 17 goals and registered 13 assists for Liverpool. He has also played a key role in Liverpool&rsquo;s rise in the Champions League where they sit top of the table and also lead in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah hints at Liverpool exit, says 'my last year at the club'

Arne Slot says crisis-hit Manchester United are "much, much better" than their shocking position in the Premier League suggests as he prepares his Liverpool team for a clash against their fierce rivals on Sunday.<o:p></o:p>

United, by contrast, are 14th in the table after five defeats in their past six league games under new manager Ruben Amorim.<o:p></o:p>
But Slot, also in his first campaign in England, is adamant he will not take his opponents lightly at Anfield, when asked if he might rest players at Friday's pre-match press conference.<o:p></o:p>
"No, of course I'm not going to plan to rest any player because it's a big game and I think it's for me I said it before the first fixture (a 3-0 win at Old Trafford) and I can say it one more time, that they have much better players in my opinion than maybe the league table shows at the moment.<o:p></o:p>
"I think it's going to take a while maybe for Ruben Amorim to bring this out of the players... but they will definitely go up and they are much, much, much better than the league table shows at the moment."<o:p></o:p>

"I think every manager sympathises with every other manager, because we all know how much pressure this job brings," said Slot. "That's not different for him than for me, or for any other manager that works in the Premier League, or somewhere else around the world."<o:p></o:p>
Slot was asked whether he could categorically state that Liverpool would not let Trent Alexander-Arnold leave in the January transfer window, with the defender heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.<o:p></o:p>

Slot said Alexander-Arnold was "fully committed" to Liverpool and would be playing on Sunday. "Hopefully he brings the same performances as he brought in for the last half-year, because I think everybody saw how great a first half of the season he had, how much he is here, how much he wants to win here," said Slot."

Manchester United ‘much better’ than Premier League standing: Slot

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters fears this year's Club World Cup could create "great difficulty" for Manchester City and Chelsea ahead of next season's English top-flight campaign.
The two clubs will be England's representatives in FIFA's expanded 32-team event in the United States, with players' unions threatening legal action on welfare grounds and national leagues unhappy about the potential knock-on effects on their own competitions.
The Club World Cup final is due to be played on July 13, with the 2025/26 Premier League season starting on August 16.
"The leagues and the players' unions are not happy with the decisions that are being taken at a global level," Masters told Sky Sports.
"We've seen the Club World Cup come in, and obviously that is going to have an impact on the Premier League.&nbsp;
"If either Manchester City or Chelsea get to the final of that competition, the Premier League starts four weeks later, and all players are supposed to have three weeks off as part of the contractual commitment.
"So how does that work? With great difficulty I would say."

<h2>Premier League is not a pension fund</h2>
Masters, meanwhile, insisted English football is "not on a financial precipice" as he reiterated the Premier League's concerns about the potential impact of an independent regulator on the game.
The Premier League spent more than &pound;45 million ($56 million) in legal costs during the 2023/24 season as it attempted to uphold its rules amid challenges from clubs.
And there will have been additional and significant legal fees this season for the Premier League given their major disciplinary case against Manchester City is still ongoing.&nbsp;
The reigning champions were charged in 2023 with more than 100 alleged breaches of the financial rules.
An independent commission heard the case between September and December, with an outcome now pending.
City have also challenged the legality of the league's associated party transaction (APT) regulations, which seek to ensure deals done with organisations linked to a club's ownership are at a fair market value.
Both the current and former British government's aim in supporting an independent regulator is to safeguard the financial sustainability of clubs in the top five tiers of English football.
Masters, however, insisted too many regulations could damage the excitement on which the it thrives.&nbsp;
"We have that jeopardy, we have that constant fizz of compelling entertainment," he said.
"There are many different reasons (for the Premier League's global popularity) but that, I think, is what separates us from others."
He added: "We have always been pro investment within measured risks. The Premier League is not a pension fund, it is a place where capital is put at risk. There is no certainty of outcome -- that is one of the things that makes it interesting.
"We do worry that a new regulatory function might be risk-averse and might inhibit clubs' ability to invest. And the ability to invest is key to competitive balance, and that jeopardy that I'm talking about."
