London,&nbsp;United Kingdom: Mikel Arteta has revealed Arsenal's preparations for their 3-1 win at Brentford were hampered by a virus that swept through his squad.&nbsp;Several of Arsenal's stars were struck down by the illness on the eve of the crucial Premier League clash on Wednesday.
German forward Kai Havertz was sent home with the bug, while England midfielder Declan Rice was only able to come off the bench in the second half.
Martin Odegaard reportedly struggled with the virus ahead of kick-off and although he was able to start, the Arsenal captain made a mistake that led to Bryan Mbeumo's opener and was replaced in the second half.
But the Gunners recovered impressively at the Gtech Community Stadium as they ignored the illness outbreak to climb back into the title race.
Goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli ensured Arsenal would not be derailed.
"It affected players on the pitch and off the pitch," Arteta said after second-placed Arsenal moved within six points of leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

"These things happen. In this period, there are always things thrown at you, infections, viruses, so I try to delay the line-up as late as possible because you can get up in the morning and unfortunately have a surprise like this."
Arteta is hopeful the virus will have abated for his side's trip to Brighton on Saturday.

Premier League: Mikel Arteta reveals Arsenal hit by virus before crucial win at Brentford

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was given a two-match ban on Tuesday after his clash with Ipswich backroom staff following his side's damaging Premier League defeat.
Cunha was seen confronting members of Ipswich's security team in ugly scenes after the final whistle of the Wolves' 2-1 loss to their relegation rivals at Molineux on December 14.
He was reported to have elbowed a member of the Ipswich staff before snatching the man's glasses from his face.
Cunha's teammate Rayan Ait-Nouri was sent off as tempers flared after Jack Taylor bagged Ipswich&rsquo;s winner deep into stoppage time.
Cunha was charged by the Football Association and subsequently admitted the charge.&nbsp;
An independent commission has suspended the Brazilian for Wolves' next two matches and handed out an &pound;80,000 ($100,000) fine.
The FA said written reasons for the commission's sanctioning decision would be published in due course.
The 25-year-old will miss Wolves' Premier League game with Nottingham Forest on Monday and the FA Cup third round trip to Bristol City.

Cunha has arguably been Wolves' standout player, with 10 goals in 19 league games this season.
His absence will be a big blow to Wolves, who are just one place and one point above the relegation zone.
The defeat to Ipswich marked the end of the road for boss Gary O'Neil, who was dismissed and replaced by Portuguese boss Vitor Pereira.

Premier League: Wolves forward Matheus Cunha given two-game ban after Ipswich row

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted his team is in a relegation battle after their third consecutive defeat in the Premier League on Monday (Dec 31). United lost 0-2 to Newcastle, meaning the Red Devils will end the year in the bottom half of the table for the first time since the 1988-89 season. After the defeat, the Portuguese gaffer spoke to the presser and admitted his team is in a relegation battle having lost four of the five matches.
<h2 class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Amorim admits relegation battle</h2>
"We have been speaking about Eriksen and Casemiro on this show 18 months ago. These players can't run. We know that. That is on the manager putting these two players in that position and in that system,&rdquo; Amorim said while speaking to the press in the aftermath of the Newcastle United match.
"But right now it is not just about tonight. United have lost five of their last six. That's relegation form."
Coming into the Newcastle contest, United had lost three of the four Premier League matches, with their only win being the Manchester Derby against City earlier in the month. Alexander Isak scored in the fourth minute before Joelinton added a second goal to his team tally in the 19th minute. Things could have been worse for the Red Devils after Sandro Tonali hit the post before halftime.

At the time of writing, United sit 14th in the Premier League standings and have 22 points from 19 matches, winning only six matches so far. The task will only get tougher for Amorim&rsquo;s side over the weekend as they take on Liverpool at Anfield, having earlier lost the same fixture 0-3 at Old Trafford.
The Reds are flying high at the moment and sit top of the Premier League table with 45 points in 18 matches. Arne Slot&rsquo;s side currently smells blood against United and will head into the contest as heavy favourites to win the match. United are winless in their last four matches against Liverpool and have deposited 12 goals, including a 0-7 defeat at Anfield two seasons ago.<o:p></o:p>

"Everyone involved with Ipswich can enjoy a glass of sparkly stuff tomorrow night and think about some of the moments we've had over the last couple of years."

Premier League: Chelsea's title hopes rocked by shock 2-0 defeat at Ipswich

London,&nbsp;United Kingdom: Rampant Liverpool smashed West Ham 5-0 on Sunday to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points as Manchester City returned to winning ways at troubled Leicester.
Nottingham Forest climbed to second in the table with a fifth straight win at Everton while Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham conceded late to draw 2-2 against Vitor Pereira's rejuvenated Wolves.
Arne Slot's Liverpool look unstoppable in their quest for a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, recording their 23rd win in 27 matches in all competitions this season.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring against Julen Lopetegui's hapless team on the half-hour, before Mohamed Salah set up Cody Gakpo for the second with some audacious footwork.
The Egypt international then scored his 20th goal of the season shortly before half-time to put the visitors in total control.
Trent Alexander-Arnold&nbsp;made it 4-0 with a deflected shot from distance in the 54th minute and Diogo Jota completed the rout, courtesy of another Salah assist following a surging run.
"I enjoyed it a lot because it doesn't happen many times that I could just sit back and enjoy," said Slot, flying in his first season in the Anfield hotseat after replacing Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool's striking success has come against the background of mounting speculation over the futures of Salah, Alexander-Arnold and captain Virgil van Dijk.
All three can discuss a move to a foreign club on a free transfer from January 1 but remain focused on winning a second Premier League title together.
"The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of that," Salah told Sky Sports.
"I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us and we need to stay focused and humble."

"Our mood is in a better position. It was tight in the second half, they were much better.&nbsp;
"We don't have energy to sustain 90 minutes. Hopefully the new year can help us bounce back."
Nuno Espirito Santo's Forest beat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park, leapfrogging Chelsea and Arsenal.
Chris Wood&nbsp;chipped over Jordan Pickford for the opening goal in the 15th minute after being set up by Anthony Elanga.
Wood turned provider for Forest's second, which came just after the hour mark when Morgan Gibbs-White produced some neat footwork before firing home.
Injury-hit Spurs were on track to end a torrid December on a high after first-half goals by Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan's brilliant opener for Wolves.
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min also squandered a 43rd-minute penalty, but it did not appear to be too costly until substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen smashed home in the 87th minute.
"I'm the person in charge, so of course it hurts," said Postecoglou, whose team have won just one of their past seven Premier League matches.
"When I see how hard they are trying, it hurts even more because you want them to get a reward and I think today they deserved a reward for their efforts."
Crystal Palace won just their second home league game of the season, seeing off bottom club Southampton 2-1, thanks to goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Eberechi Eze.

Premier League: Liverpool thrash West Ham to go eight points clear at the top

Manchester City provided Pep Guardiola some relief with a 2-0 victory at Leicester to secure just a second win in 14 games for the crisis-hit English champions on Sunday.
Savinho and Erling Haaland struck either side of half-time as City ended a run of eight away games without a win.
Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/it-was-unfair-cristiano-ronaldo-on-vinicius-jr-missing-out-on-winning-2024-ballon-dor-8572139" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">&lsquo;It was unfair,&rsquo; Ronaldo on Vinicius Jr not winning 2024 Ballon d&rsquo;Or</a>
The performance was still far from the standards that Guardiola's side have set in winning an unprecedented four consecutive English top-flight titles.
But the effusive celebrations of Haaland's header 16 minutes from time showed that three points was all that mattered for the visitors to at least temporarily halt their remarkable slump.
Victory lifts City up to fifth but they are still 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand.
Defeat leaves Leicester still rooted in the bottom three.
Guardiola made just one change from the 1-1 Boxing Day draw against Everton as Kevin De Bruyne replaced his Belgian international colleague Jeremy Doku.
De Bruyne's fitness struggles have played a part in City's slump and he immediately showed what Guardiola's men have been missing for most of the season.
Rico Lewis picked out De Bruyne, who cushioned a cross into the path of Haaland but his low effort was well saved by Leicester's stand-in goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.
Leicester have now lost their last four games after a bright start to Ruud van Nistelrooy's reign.
The Foxes were left to rue not taking their chances to inflict more misery on a City side still showing a clear lack of confidence.
Any time the home side crossed into City territory in the first half they appeared a major threat.
Jamie Vardy would surely have won a penalty had he not strayed offside before being brought down by Stefan Ortega, while James Justin's header hit the post after a goalmouth scramble.
City, though, got the crucial opening goal on 21 minutes.
Stolarczyk should have done better than to parry Phil Foden's long-range effort into the path of Savinho, who swept the rebound into the roof of the net for his first City goal.
Chances continued to come and go for Leicester early in the second half.
Justin should have levelled but his mishit finish from close range allowed Manuel Akanji to clear off the line.
Vardy then had the biggest chance to level when he prodded over Stephy Mavididi's brilliant in-swinging cross.
However, they were hit by a City sucker punch to end the defending champions' miserable run on the road.
Savinho was the creator this time as his cross perfectly picked out Haaland, who powered home his 19th of the season ending his four-game goal drought.

Premier League: Manchester City snap losing streak with Leicester win

Pep Guardiola insists he will not walk out on troubled Manchester City as he strives to stop the champions' stunning decline.
Guardiola only recently signed a two-year contract extension but City's dismal form has raised questions about his future at the Etihad Stadium.

A nightmare run of nine defeats in 13 games, with just one win in that woeful spell, triggered suggestions the City boss could decide to quit if he cannot find an answer to his team's problems.
But, having led City to six Premier League titles in the past seven seasons, Guardiola is adamant he still has the hunger to turn the situation around.
"I will try, I will keep going. Sometimes you think the bad run will be ended earlier or it would be easier to fix it, but it takes more time," he said.
"I will not give up. I want to be here. I want to do it and, with the situation that we have, we have to do it.
"Of course I want it, everyone wants it. I don't want to disappoint my people in terms of the club, the fans, the people who love this club.
"I think all of us in our job want to do it well and please the people. That is undeniable, not a question mark.
"The biggest test is to come back again, but we have done that before."
Injuries have been a major factor in City's demise, leaving them languishing in seventh place in the Premier League.
Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is recovering from a long-term knee injury, while Ruben Dias, John Stones, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish and Matheus Nunes all missed the 1-1 draw with Everton on Boxing Day.
The usually prolific Erling Haaland missed a penalty that could have sealed a City win against Everton, extending his erratic form in an inconsistent season.
Haaland has scored just once in his last seven games, but Guardiola refused to blame the Norway striker or any of his team-mates.
"I don't have it in my education to start complaining, to point at people. It's happened, it's life, it's football, so let's try it again," he said.
"That's why we have had success, because always it is never enough, we will try it again and again and again. That's why we won a lot of titles.
"Every three days it was a game and win, win, win for many, many months and years. Now we have to do the same when results are not good."
City still have doubts over the fitness of a number of players as they bid to get back to winning ways at struggling Leicester on Sunday.
"Sometimes you have injuries," Guardiola said. "For how many years we were incredibly consistent but now, yes, we're a little bit down and the main reason is having so many important players injured.
"But I saw the team spirit, how we trained this week, how focused they are, how they try to practise."

Pep Guardiola to 'keep going' as Manchester City boss despite struggle

Dismal defeats to Wolves, Bournemouth and Tottenham in their last three matches have increased the pressure on Amorim ahead of Newcastle's visit to Old Trafford on Monday.

United are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, just eight points above the relegation zone.
But Diallo has been one of United's few bright spots, highlighted by his late winner in the derby against Manchester City recently.
The 22-year-old Ivory Coast forward has scored two goals and added six assists in the league this season.
Alongside United's other young players, Diallo has his sights set on taking United back to the top.
<h2>Diallo Keeps Belief Alive</h2>
"We are part of the project, we have so many young players for this club, especially Garna (Alejandro Garnacho), Kobbie (Mainoo), Joshua (Zirkzee), Rasmus (Hojlund), me, we are young players who want to make history for this club," Diallo told MUTV.
"We want to do our best every game. Sometimes it cannot work, but you can see in the pitch we are very focused to do our best for this club, because we want to bring back this club to the level it was before.
"So, for the young lads, we just have to keep going, work hard and the most important thing is to listen to the old men, the old players, learn every day.
"We have now a new manager, he likes to work with young players, and he brings a new system, so we just have to follow it and try to do our best every game."
Diallo has proved his versatility in the early days of Amorim's reign, featuring both at right wing-back and in more attacking roles.
"In football this can happen," he added. "Don't be focused in only one position. Sometimes you can play as a defender, sometimes as a striker. Wherever the manager puts me I'm ready to fight for the team.
"I just want to play, right wing, number 10, anywhere. I say to the manager if you need me as a 'keeper I'm ready to do my best, I will fight for the team and for my team-mates. I want to make history for this club."

PL: Saka-less Arsenal move to second spot after win over Ipswich Town

Ruben Amorim admitted he had "no idea" how long it will take for him to revive Manchester United, saying his focus was on "survival" after a defeat by Wolves condemned him to the worst start by any Old Trafford boss in nearly 100 years.
Thursday's 2-0 loss at Molineux -- United's third consecutive defeat -- made Amorim the first United manager to lose five or more of his first 10 matches in charge since Walter Crickmer in January 1932.

"I have no idea. No idea. Instead of me trying to understand how much time it will take, just day by day," Amorim said when asked how long it will take for his ideas to have an impact.
"Improving, trying to see the videos, using every minute of training and try to win some points because it's really important in this moment...
"In this moment, we just have to survive and win some time to work on the team.
"We already knew it. I start this job and you start with the team, a new idea, without any time to train, with a lot of games, tough games."
Defeat left United closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places heading into their final match of 2024 at home to in-form Newcastle.
Following last week's League Cup quarter-final loss to Tottenham and the home defeat by Bournemouth, things went from bad to worse for United at Molineux.
United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a second yellow yard soon after half-time, with Wolves' Matheus Cunha scoring directly from a corner.
Cunha then set up substitute Hwang Hee-chan to complete a 2-0 win deep into stoppage time that left United a lowly 14th in the Premier League table.
"The idea needs time," said Amorim. "I said it before to you guys that this will be a tough moment and we are far from the end of this moment and that's it."
Things are very different for Amorim's compatriot Vitor Pereira, with the new Wolves boss continuing his perfect start since succeeding the sacked Gary O'Neil following a commanding 3-0 win at Leicester.
"Fantastic feeling," said Pereira after his first home match in charge.
"Special because of the spirit of the team. Now I think we can see that the players are ready to suffer together."

Liverpool's comeback lifted them well clear of second-placed Chelsea, who were defeated 2-1 by Fulham earlier in the day.

It was Chelsea's first home defeat against Fulham since 1979.
Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style.
But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Harry Wilson nodded in from close range.

With his team marooned in 14th place -- just eight points above the relegation zone -- Amorim's woes might not be over, with United facing in-form Newcastle on Monday before travelling to Liverpool in their first game of 2025. "It's so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it's more difficult," Amorim said. Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion. Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton. Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford denied him. City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending. "Of course we need results and we didn't get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win," said City boss Pep Guardiola. Chelsea stunned At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were stunned by Fulham's late fightback in a dramatic west London derby. There was worse to come for the Blues when Rodrigo Muniz completed the turnaround in the 95th minute. Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground. Forest's fourth successive win was sweet revenge for boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose former club Tottenham had Djed Spence sent off in the closing moments for a second booking. Tottenham are stuck in 11th as the pressure mounts on boss Ange Postecoglou. Newcastle swatted aside 10-man Aston Villa 3-0, moving up to fifth place after winning three consecutive league games for the first time since 2023. Jarrod Bowen's 59th-minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win at bottom of the table Southampton after the visitors saw Guido Rodriguez's red card overturned by VAR. It was a frustrating start for new Saints boss Ivan Juric, who has replaced the sacked Russell Martin. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium. PL: Liverpool beat struggling Leicester; Manchester United crash at Wolves

Winners of the last four Premier League titles, the English champions have won just once in their last 13 games in all competitions.
Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for the Toffees.
City climb to sixth but could end the day five points adrift of the top four.
A hard-fought point for the visitors edges Everton five clear of the relegation zone in 15th.
City boss Pep Guardiola conceded ahead of the game that his side are at risk of failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 15 years.
The top four automatically qualify for Europe's premier club competition but fifth is likely to be enough this season due to a strong start by English clubs in European competition.&nbsp;
"The one team that has been in the Champions League for the past years has been Manchester City," said Guardiola. "Now we are at risk, of course we are. Definitely."
Not for the first time in City's miserable few months they failed to build on a promising start.
Josko Gvardiol headed a corner off the post inside the opening three minutes.
Everton had kept five clean sheets in their last six games but were breached after just 14 minutes.
Jeremy Doku fed Silva and his effort across goal deflected off Jarrad Branthwaite and looped beyond the helpless Jordan Pickford.
Silva wasted a glorious chance for the vital second goal when he attempted a tough finish with the outside of his left boot that flew past the post when he had just Pickford to beat.

Pickford denied Savinho's low effort and Mateo Kovacic fired just wide as City upped the tempo at the start of the second period.
There was another major swing in momentum just seven minutes after the restart.
Savinho was chopped down inside the area by Vitaliy Mykolenko, who was lucky to avoid a second yellow card.
Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but his spot-kick was that of a striker short in confidence as Pickford dived low to his right to make the save.
The giant Norwegian headed in after Gvardiol nodded the rebound across goal but was clearly offside.
Haaland has scored just once in his last seven matches and not found the net in his last four.
Guardiola said this week the 24-year-old's lean spell alone did not explain City's collapse.
But their dependance on Haaland, who has played the full 90 minutes in every Premier League game this season, is at the heart of his side's struggles.
It should have been even worse for Guardiola's men as Everton spurned a huge chance to snatch all three points deep in stoppage time.
Jack Harrison's shot was blocked after the visitors failed to make the most of a four against two counter-attack.

Premier League: Man City pay penalty for Erling Haaland miss in Everton draw

Manchester, United Kingdom
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed Marcus Rashford’s stand at the club as they prepare for a hectic festive season. Speaking to the press on Christmas Eve, Amorim spoke on Rashford who has been out of favour in recent weeks from United’s first team. According to the United boss, he is desperate to play but things will depend on how the players will train.
<h2>Amorim on Rashford’s situation</h2>
"Yeah, it's my decision," said Amorim. "He wants to play, he's trying, but it's my decision, only my decision.
"I spoke with a lot of players, individually and during training. I'm doing this my way and it's the only way I know. If I don't do that, I lose myself and I don't want to lose myself. I know what I'm doing."
Rashford has been out of favour for United’s last three matches including two high-profile games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. While United were lucky to win the Man City clash after a late Amad Diallo cameo, it was not the case in the Tottenham match where they lost 3-4.

United were again embarrassed on the weekend when they lost 0-3 at Old Trafford which sees them in the bottom half of the Premier League standings. This is the first time since the 1988-89 season that United have been in the bottom half of the table in the Premier League era.
For Rashford, things could go from bad to worse as he fights for his future at the club having fallen down the pecking order. He is expected to leave the Old Trafford outfit, however, that move is likely to materialise in the summer rather than the upcoming winter transfer window which opens on January 1.

Premier League: Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim confirms Marcus Rashford's stand at club, says 'he wants to...'

London, United Kingdom
Christmas Premier League chart-toppers Liverpool are overwhelming favourites to see off struggling Leicester on Boxing Day (Thursday).
Meanwhile both crisis-hit Manchester clubs will seek a festive fillip, with faltering champions City at home to Wolves and United away to Wolves.
Second-placed Chelsea host Fulham while in-form Arsenal will fancy their chances against relegation-threatened Ipswich on Friday, even without the injured Bukayo Saka.
Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham, licking their wounds after a brutal 6-3 hammering by Liverpool, face a tough assignment at high-flying Nottingham Forest.
AFP Sport picks out some of the major talking points in the run-up to one of the busiest points of the English football season.
<h2>Liverpool top of the tree</h2>
Liverpool are top the table on Christmas Day for the first time since the 2020/21 season and will want to make it count.
Just once in the past seven top-flight campaigns in which they have sat at the summit on December 25, have they gone on to win the title.
Arne Slot's side returned to winning ways in style on Sunday, overwhelming Spurs following two frustrating draws.
They are four points clear of Chelsea with a game in hand. It would be a huge surprise if they slipped up against Leicester at home, especially with Mohamed Salah enjoying a purple patch.
The Egypt international is the first player to reach double figures for both goals (15) and assists (11) before Christmas in the history of the Premier League.
Leicester won their first match under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy earlier this month but have collected just a single point in their past three matches, conceding nine goals.
The leaky Foxes have not won at Anfield since 2000 and are just two points clear of the drop zone after returning to the top flight this season.

<h2>Saka blow forces Arsenal rethink</h2>
A buoyant Mikel Arteta said the Premier League title race was "on" after Arsenal swept Crystal Palace aside 5-1 on Saturday.
But one dark cloud was Saka limping off at Selhurst Park, with the England winger set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
It is a blow for Arteta, depriving him of his most potent attacking weapon -- Saka has scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions this season -- just as Arsenal are finding their form again.
"It's going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we've already had a lot in the season," said Arsenal boss Arteta, whose team are third in the Premier League table.
Arteta has a number of attacking options, with Gabriel Martinelli a candidate to fill the void, but Saka, 23, offers something unique.

Premier League: Liverpool host Leicester City, Arsenal prepare for Ipswich clash on Boxing Day

Enzo Maresca believes Manchester City will bounce back into Premier League title contention, while insisting it is "just reality" that Chelsea are not genuine challengers for the crown.

Chelsea go into Thursday's west London derby at home to Fulham second in the table and just four points adrift of leaders Liverpool, having played one game more than the Merseysiders.

By contrast City, for all they have won an unprecedented four straight Premier League titles before this season, are now 12 points off the summit following a woeful run of nine defeats in 12 matches in all competitions.

But Maresca, who worked alongside City boss Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, said: "Manchester City at the end will be there. They are in a moment that has never happened before.

"Every time they play a game, they have an injury, and they don't have enough players in this moment. And the ones they have are not 100 percent because they have just come back from injury, so it is a very bad situation.

"We are ahead of our expectations, in terms of the way we are playing, and the points we have, but the main focus is how we can improve the players and how we can improve the team."

Maresca, who has repeatedly dismissed any title talk concerning Chelsea, added: "It is not about the (title) pressure for the players or for the club or for me, it is just the reality.

"I would like to have that kind of pressure and hopefully soon we can, but the reason why I said we are not there yet, is because the reality is that we are not."

Maresca, asked if it was now Liverpool's title to lose, replied: "No, the reality says we are second at the halfway point, so the table does reflect the teams.

"But Liverpool have done a fantastic job since the first day, and the squad has lived that kind of moment, winning a trophy, which is important.

"Last year, when Liverpool faced Chelsea in the Carabao (League) Cup final I saw the amount of finals that Liverpool players had played in, and the number of finals Chelsea players had played in, and there was a huge difference. So it shows the experience you need, but we are happy to be where we are."

Liverpool top of the tree Liverpool are top the table on Christmas Day for the first time since the 2020/21 season and will want to make it count.

United Kindom
Ruben Amorim has insisted he knows what he's doing as the Manchester United manager looks to revive the fallen English giants amid a row over the future of Marcus Rashford.
Amorim has had a rollercoaster ride since succeeding the sacked Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

United enjoyed a late comeback win over local rivals Manchester City only to then slump to a 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth last weekend following a midweek 4-3 League Cup quarter-final defeat by Tottenham.
Rashford was omitted from all three of those games, with the 27-year-old, a product of the United youth system, now looking increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford.
The struggling England international fuelled speculation about his own future by saying he was "ready for a new challenge" in a midweek interview.
But Amorim, speaking ahead of the Boxing Day match away to Wolves, said nothing had changed from his point of view.
"Normal situation," he said. "When I feel that it's the right moment I will change something. Until then I will continue to think what is the best for the team.
"I speak with him (Rashford) every day. Not about the interview, about the performance."
Amorim added Rashford "wants to play, he is trying" but "it's my decision, only my decision".
"I spoke with a lot of players -- individually, during training -- so I'm trying to do things... I am doing things my way," the Portuguese boss said. "And it's the only way I know.
"If I don't do that I will lose myself and I will not lose myself. I know what I'm doing."
Amorim questioned the "choices" of people surrounding Rashford after omitting him from the Bournemouth match, when Gary Neville said the forward leaving felt like an "inevitable ending".
The former United captain also called it a "distraction for the manager" -- something Amorim denied Tuesday.
"No, I don't think so," he said. "Not for me, not for the other players because everybody is there every day during training, so they understand and that is the key point.
"For the media and for the other people, I cannot control that.
"But I'm really focused and they know, I'm so clear in my message, everybody in Carrington know what I'm talking about and what I want from Marcus and everybody else.
"So, it's not a distraction for us. Maybe it's for the media but that is not my concern."
<h2>'Responsibility'</h2>
Amorim, asked what more he would like to see from Rashford, replied: "Like any other player, the best that they can be.
"If you have big talents, big performance, big responsibility, big engagement, like push forward everybody in this moment. And some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time."
United are a lowly 13th in the table ahead of Thursday's match against a team managed by Amorim's compatriot Vitor Pereira, who is taking charge of his first match at Molineux fresh from leading Wolves to a 3-0 win at Leicester.
"I understand that it's a tough moment, and it's on me," said Amorim.
"Since the first day that I arrived, it's on me because I'm responsible for the team...We just have to think about improving, to understand the context and not focus on what happened in the past."

'Doing things my way,' says Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim amid Rashford row

London, United Kingdom
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expects his in-form side to face a "very difficult" challenge away to Newcastle on Boxing Day. Villa beat Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday for a fourth win from five games in all competitions. But sixth-placed Villa will kick-off at St James' Park against a Newcastle team on a fine run of their own.
The Magpies go into Thursday's game following successive 4-0 league wins over Leicester and Ipswich, with Newcastle having also done the double over Villa last season.
"Very difficult, because I think now they are in good form, and of course they played two years ago in the Champions League," said Emery of Newcastle.  "Their objective is clearly to be in Europe," added the Spaniard as he lauded Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
“He (Howe) was doing a fantastic job with Bournemouth. Always, his teams are more or less dynamic teams, intensity, they like to play with the ball possession and being aggressive in attack, attacking with a lot of players. "They (Newcastle) beat us last year two times, and of course I respect them a lot. It is a very strong stadium for them, difficult for the opponent."
<h2>- 'Motivating' -</h2>
Villa have lost their last four away games in the Premier League and Thursday's match promises to be another tough test. "When I arrived here, my thoughts were that it is the most difficult league," said Emery. "A lot of teams have capacity, with good players, good coaches and good history...The league is a very interesting league, very motivating for us, each match how we can get points and be better. Now we are sixth, we are trying to focus each match, be consistent.
"We are feeling better at home, but away, it is completely different."

Howe, meanwhile, has challenged his eighth-placed side -- just two points behind Villa -- to prove the Premier League's top six is no "closed shop". Spending regulations mean both clubs face fresh challenges as they bid to secure places among English football's elite but Howe refuses to let those restrictions temper his ambitions.
"I never see anything as a closed shop," he said. "It's our job to try and achieve the most that we can and put no barriers on our levels or our expectations of ourselves internally and see what happens."
Howe added: "We have seen Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and loads of teams have really strong seasons. The level of the Premier League has been really tight this year between all teams.
"I don't think there's a lot of difference between the top and bottom sides and that's testament to the quality of every team in the league. There are no easy games and that makes a great spectacle.
"It makes a great league because you never know what's going to happen. You never know what twists and turns are ahead, so it's up to all of us to try and break into whatever group of teams, try to upset people and achieve success."

PL: Aston Villa boss Unai Emery set for 'very difficult' clash with Newcastle on Boxing Day

Manchester, United Kingdom
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has questioned Marcus Rashford’s camp after a public comment on his future at the club. Amorim was not happy with the forward’s comments to journalist Henry Winter. Rashford said he was “ready for a new challenge” after being dropped for United’s last two Premier League matches including the Manchester derby last Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

<h2>Amorim unhappy with Rashford’s camp</h2>
"It is a hard situation," Amorim told Sky Sports on Monday (Dec 23). "I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player.
"I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that.
"As a coach, I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.”
The Red Devils boss had dropped Rashford in the Manchester derby followed by their visit to Tottenham in the League Cup midweek. Interestingly, he was not even on the bench for any of those matches which was also the case for Sunday’s match at Old Trafford against Bournemouth as they lost 0-3.
Argentine Alejandro Garnacho was also dropped from the squad for the Etihad clash which United won 2-1, but he was instated put into the squad for the Bournemouth clash.

<h2>What is Rashford’s future at the club?</h2>
Rashford is likely to be out of the club with Amorim unlikely to fancy his future at Manchester United, as per reports.
However, he is unlikely to leave the club in the winter transfer window, which opens on January 1.
United will be weighing their options for the summer, with the academy product being given enough chances to either impress the new manager in the rest of the season or find a potential suitor in the summer.
Amorim’s side will head into Christmas sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table for the first time since the 1988-89 season.
They will face Wolves in their next encounter on Boxing Day, who like United have hired a new manager in Vítor Pereira.

"I understand that it's a tough moment, and it's on me," said Amorim.&nbsp;

"Since the first day that I arrived, it's on me because I'm responsible for the team...We just have to think about improving, to understand the context and not focus on what happened in the past."

The Magpies go into Thursday's game following successive 4-0 league wins over Leicester and Ipswich, with Newcastle having also done the double over Villa last season. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Very difficult, because I think now they are in good form, and of course they played two years ago in the Champions League," said Emery of Newcastle.&nbsp; "Their objective is clearly to be in Europe," added the Spaniard as he lauded Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

Virgil van Dijk says there is "no deadline" regarding his contract situation as the clock ticks down to the end of his Liverpool deal.
The Netherlands international's current contract expires at the end of the season and from January 1, he will be able to negotiate with overseas clubs.

However, it is understood that the 33-year-old's preference is to stay at Anfield.
"There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No," he told reporters.
Van Dijk is one of three key players whose deals are entering their final six months, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah the others.
Salah moved fourth on Liverpool's all-time list of scorers with 229 goals after his two strikes in their 6-3 hammering of Tottenham on Sunday.
The Egypt international has 18 goals so far this season, including 15 in the Premier League, and also has 15 assists.
Salah scored 44 goals in all competitions during his debut season for Liverpool in 2017/18.
Van Dijk hopes the 32-year-old forward can go on to have his best campaign for the club, who are four points clear at the top of the Premier League.
"The numbers speak for themselves," he said.
"He's a very special athlete. He's done amazingly for the club, and hopefully he can play his best season ever for the club, stay important with his goals and assists, and be clinical.
"He is a professional. We've been there, he's been there, so onto the next (game). And next season? I don't know."

Bukayo Saka will be sidelined for "many weeks" after suffering a hamstring injury in Arsenal's 5-1 win at Crystal Palace, with manager Mikel Arteta describing his loss as a "huge" blow.
The England winger went down midway through the first half at Selhurst Park on Saturday and had to be replaced by Leandro Trossard.

"It is not looking good. He will be out for many weeks," Arteta said at a press conference on Monday, adding he could not be more specific.
The Spaniard said the loss of the 23-year-old, who has nine goals and 13 assists in all competitions this season, would force him into a rethink.
"Obviously he's a big player for us," he said. "You just have to see the impact that he has on the team, but it's going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we've already had a lot in the season."
Arteta said Saka was "gutted" and "really emotional" after discovering the extent of his injury.
He also revealed that fellow winger Raheem Sterling had injured his knee and would be out for a number of weeks.
"We have to look internally at what we have and be creative," said the Gunners boss, adding that he did not know if the club would sign a winger in the January transfer window.
Saka was filmed leaving Selhurst Park on crutches, souring what had been a comprehensive second win over the Palace in four days.
Arteta, whose third-placed team face Premier League strugglers Ipswich on Friday, said he was confident that Saka would be back well before the end of the season.
"It's part of the development of a player," he said. "At some stage, at this level, you are going to get injured –- unfortunately badly.
"It could have been worse, it could have been something else that can take you out for a year. It's how you react to that, how you overcome that situation."
Arteta said he was "putting some ideas together" about how to cope in the winger's absence.
"We went through the period (this season without) Martin (Odegaard), we went through the period with five, six defenders missing, we went through the period without many other players," he said.
"We will continue to do that -- finding ways and taking it with positive energy."
Asked if the congested fixture schedule had played a part in Saka's injury, Arteta said the issue was more to do with consistently high workloads over many seasons.
"For example, Bukayo and Declan (Rice), they played over 130 games in two seasons," he said. "So what's going to happen in the second one, the third one or the fourth one, if that continues the same way? Probably it's unsustainable."

The England winger went down midway through the first half at Selhurst Park on Saturday and had to be replaced by Leandro Trossard. Also Read: Nikola Jokic helps Denver Nuggets rally for overtime win vs New Orleans Pelicans "It is not looking good. "You just have to see the impact that he has on the team, but it's going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we've already had a lot in the season." Arteta said Saka was "gutted" and "really emotional" after discovering the extent of his injury. It's how you react to that, how you overcome that situation." Arteta said he was "putting some ideas together" about how to cope in the winger's absence. "We went through the period (this season without) Martin (Odegaard), we went through the period with five, six defenders missing, we went through the period without many other players," he said. "We will continue to do that -- finding ways and taking it with positive energy." Asked if the congested fixture schedule had played a part in Saka's injury, Arteta said the issue was more to do with consistently high workloads over many seasons. "For example, Bukayo and Declan (Rice), they played over 130 games in two seasons," he said. "So what's going to happen in the second one, the third one or the fourth one, if that continues the same way? Probably it's unsustainable." Amid ongoing debate in Iran over strict hijab laws, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Wednesday (Dec 18) dubbed women as ‘delicate flowers’. In a cryptic post on social media platform X, Khamenei, who is accused of curbing women's rights in the Shi’ite country, said women ‘need to be cared for’.

"A woman is a delicate flower and not a housemaid. A woman should be treated like a flower in the home. A flower needs to be cared for. Its freshness and sweet scent should be benefitted from and used to perfume the air," the post read.

<h2>Debate over hijab law</h2>

Iranian women are up in arms over a hijab law approved by the parliament in September 2023. The law aims to tighten restrictions on women's public attire and threaten action against businesses that fail to enforce the dress code. The bill was later okayed by the Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation, but it has yet to be sent to the government for final approval.

Premier League: Toppers Liverpool thrash Tottenham Hotspur 6-3

London, United Kingdom
Liverpool swept four points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah's masterclass inspired a memorable 6-3 rout of Tottenham, while Manchester United crashed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday. Salah delivered a sublime performance featuring two goals and a pair of assists as Arne Slot's side ran riot in north London. The 32-year-old is now Liverpool's fourth top scorer ever with 229 goals.
Salah's brace took him past Billy Liddell, with only Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285) and Gordon Hodgson (241) ahead of him. The rampant Reds have won 21 of their 25 matches in all competitions under Slot and have a game in hand on Chelsea to strengthen their lead in the title race.
This was a remarkable display of Liverpool's firepower as Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister scored to put them in command. Dominik Szoboszlai grabbed Liverpool's third and Egypt star Salah took over after the break before Diaz netted again.
"For 60 minutes we did everything we had to do, we were comfortable and good with the ball. The main thing is we worked very hard," Slot said. "But you have to be on top of your game for the whole game and we didn't do that."
Punished for Ange Postecoglou's insistence on sticking to his high defensive line, it was the first time since 1997 that Tottenham had conceded six goals in a home league game.

James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored for Tottenham, but an eighth league defeat this season leaves them languishing in 11th place as the pressure mounts on Postecoglou. "If you want to discount the fact we're missing a goalkeeper, two centre-backs and a left-back and that hasn't coincided with how we're doing... I don't know what to say anymore," Postecoglou said of his critics.
United boss Ruben Amorim, who once again left Marcus Rashford out of his squad, is set for a miserable Christmas following the worst result of his brief reign. Languishing in 13th place, United have suffered four defeats in nine matches in all competitions since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon in November to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.
United's second successive loss after their League Cup exit at Tottenham on Thursday underlined Amorim's belief that their road back to the top will be long and arduous.

Manchester United crashed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, while Chelsea missed the chance to go top of the Premier League after a 0-0 draw at Everton on Sunday.
United, who have conceded first in their last six games, were booed off at half-time, while the final whistle was greeted by more jeers from the few fans who stayed until the bitter end.
While it is far too early to pass judge on Amorim, the Portuguese coach cannot afford many more results like this if he is to keep the players and fans on his side.
Amorim's decision to play without Rashford for the third consecutive game will face fresh scrutiny after United's wretched performance.
Amorim surprisingly omitted the 27-year-old England forward from the squad for United's win at Manchester City last weekend, prompting Rashford to hint he was willing to leave the club for a "new challenge".
Rashford was at Old Trafford wearing a United tracksuit amid his extended exile as Amorim made six changes from the line-up beaten 4-3 by Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Again, United were exposed at set-pieces in the 29th minute when Bournemouth's teenage defender Dean Huijsen punished poor marking at a free-kick to glance a header past Andre Onana.
There was even worse to come for Amorim in the second half as Justin Kluivert doubled fifth-placed Bournemouth's advantage with a 61st minute penalty following Noussair Mazraoui's foul on the forward.
Antoine Semenyo compounded United's misery two minutes later with a cool finish from Dango Ouattara's pass.
With leaders Liverpool playing at Tottenham in Sunday's late game, second-placed Chelsea would have gone top, for at least a few hours, if they had won at Everton.
But Enzo Maresca's side had to settle for a goalless stalemate that ended their five-match winning run in the league.
Chelsea sit one point behind Liverpool who have two games in hand on the Blues, starting with their trip to Tottenham.
It was an encouraging start to a new era for Everton -- four points clear of the relegation zone -- under new owners the Friedkin Group, whose purchase brought an end to Farhad Moshiri's tumultuous tenure.
Everton's new executive chairman Marc Watts was in attendance at Goodison Park to see Chelsea come closest to winning when Nicolas Jackson's first-half header hit the post.
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira enjoyed a dream debut as his side won 3-0 at relegation rivals Leicester.
Replacing the sacked Gary O'Neil, former Porto boss Pereira left his role at Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab to fulfil his dream of managing in England.
Goncalo Guedes started the Pereira era with a flourish as he met Nelson Semedo's cross with an agile finish in the 19th minute.
As if that welcome gift from his fellow Portuguese wasn't enough, Pereira received another present from a compatriot in the 36th minute when Rodrigo Gomes slid in to notch his first goal for Wolves.

Matheus Cunha's 44th minute strike from Guedes' pass ensured third-bottom Wolves would move within two points of fourth-bottom Leicester.
Bottom-of-the-table Southampton held on for a 0-0 draw at Fulham as new manager Ivan Juric watched from the stands.
Juric, axed by Roma in November after just 12 games, was not in charge on Sunday as he awaited a work permit to replace Russell Martin.
Southampton are eight points adrift of safety with only one win from 17 league games.
