Chelsea roared back from two goals down to beat Tottenham 4-3 on Sunday, moving just four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool after Arsenal were held by Fulham. The Gunners and Chelsea both started the day seven points adrift of Arne Slot's side, whose game this weekend was postponed due to stormy weather.

Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw but Enzo Maresca's Chelsea, kicking off later Sunday, mounted a stunning comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski put Spurs two goals up inside 11 minutes but Jadon Sancho quickly pulled one back with a fine strike and the second half belonged to the visitors.

Cole Palmer equalised from the penalty spot in the 61st minute and Enzo Fernandez put Chelsea ahead 12 minutes later.

Palmer's ice-cool "Panenka" spot-kick gave the visitors a two-goal cushion before Son Heung-min added a late third for Spurs.

Second-placed Chelsea now have 31 points after 15 games, two points ahead of London rivals Arsenal. Liverpool, with a game in hand, are on 35 points.

"The plan or the idea is to not let the players slow down," Maresca told Sky Sports. "They cannot drop because they know another player is waiting to come in."

But the Italian, in his first season at Stamford Bridge, played down his team's title chances.

"It is a sore one, a painful one," said the Australian, whose team are now 11th in the Premier League table after their seventh defeat.

<h2>Arsenal held</h2>

Earlier, Bukayo Saka had a late winner ruled out for offside by a VAR review as the Gunners' four-match winning streak was halted in west London.

Raul Jimenez fired Fulham into an early lead before William Saliba levelled after yet another Arsenal goal from a corner.

"We are very disappointed not to win the game -- overall we absolutely dominated the game from start to end," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told the BBC. "We did all the things that we wanted to do during the game and unfortunately we concede one goal in one shot. The way the team played, the way the team wanted to win, it was unbelievable."

Arsenal were still without influential defensive pair Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori through injury and Fulham exposed a makeshift left side of the Gunners' backline to take the lead.

Kenny Tete's ball in behind was pounced on by Jimenez, who drove forward and fired brilliantly across David Raya into the far corner on 11 minutes.

Arsenal underlined their threat from set-pieces when they scored twice from corners to beat Manchester United 2-0 in midweek.

Yet for all their preparations, Fulham were still powerless to prevent the corner kings from striking again.

Saliba stabbed home Kai Havertz's header from close range for Arsenal's 23rd goal from corners since the beginning of last season.

Another corner should have led to the winner but Thomas Partey nodded wide when unmarked from another pinpoint Declan Rice delivery.

Saka did head in at the back post as stoppage time approached, but Gabriel Martinelli had strayed offside before supplying the cross.

Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester struck twice late on to deny Brighton in a 2-2 draw at the King Power.

Tariq Lamptey opened the scoring in spectacular fashion with a looping effort into the top corner from outside the box and Yankuba Minteh looked to have sealed the three points for the Seagulls.

But Jamie Vardy started the comeback on 86 minutes before teeing up Bobby De Cordova-Reid to snatch a point in stoppage time.

Bournemouth also scored twice in the dying minutes to deny struggling Ipswich a first home win in the top flight for 22 years in a 2-1 win at Portman Road.

Premier League: Manchester City fail to win again, play draw against Crystal Palace

Nottingham Forest condemned Manchester United to their second straight Premier League defeat on Saturday, beating Ruben Amorim's men 3-2 at Old Trafford.

United forward Rasmus Hojlund cancelled out Nikola Milenkovic's early goal but Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood put the visitors in charge and they kept United at bay after Bruno Fernandes pulled one back.

Forest's first win at Old Trafford since 1994 lifts them to fifth in the Premier League table but United are languishing in 13th spot.

Amorim made a positive start to his career in the United dugout after replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag last month, drawing one and winning two of his first three games.

But he warned the "storm will come" for the struggling club, who have endured a torrid start to the season.

Reality is now starting to bite hard after a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in midweek followed by Saturday's reverse at home.

"Tough game in a tough moment but we have to continue the job," a disappointed Amorim told the BBC. "This is a long journey. We are improving in some aspects. We have to win games to help us improve the team.

"We are in the start of something so big that we pay attention to every detail. We already know it's a big job so we have to continue."

The former Sporting Lisbon boss will likely be as frustrated with the manner of the goals as the result.

<h2>Set-piece agony</h2>

Corners proved their undoing at Arsenal and Milenkovic headed home from an Elliot Anderson corner in the second minute after beating Lisandro Martinez to the ball.

United rallied and were level in the 18th minute with Hojlund turning home after Alejandro Garnacho's attempt from a Manuel Ugarte ball was smothered by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.

The home side failed to build on their goal and Forest's Jota Silva sent a header onto the crossbar after a free-kick was nodded on.

United captain Fernandes went close with a set-piece of his own as the first half wound down, hitting a 25-yard free-kick that Sels brilliantly got a fingertip to before it rattled the crossbar.

But Forest again made a lightning start to the second half.

Fernandes gave the ball away to Callum Hudson-Odoi and he found Gibbs-White, whose 20-yard strike swerved as Andre Onana was all too easily beaten.

New Zealand international Wood met a deep Gibbs-White cross in the 54th minute with a header back across goal that Matthijs de Ligt, Onana and Martinez all failed to deal with as it looped in.

United pulled one back just after the hour mark when Amad Diallo showed good skill and awareness after driving down the right to play back for Fernandes, who swept the ball past Sels from the edge of the box.

The goal injected new belief into the Old Trafford faithful, who roared with encouragement when Diallo went close soon afterwards.

But Forest saw out that surge and largely blunted the hosts. Diogo Dalot saw an effort saved and Diallo was denied by a block.

Substitute Marcus Rashford's volley deflected wide deep in stoppage time, with Martinez sending an acrobatic effort inches over before the final whistle.

Premier League: Manchester United drops points after home loss to Nottingham Forest for first time since 1994

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City face an almost impossible job in replacing Kevin De Bruyne thanks to the impact the Belgian has made over the past 10 years.

De Bruyne has won six Premier League titles among 13 major trophies since joining City in 2015, a year before Guardiola's arrival. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has previously hinted he could be tempted by the riches on offer in the Saudi Pro League.

"I would like to have a 23 year-old Kevin and sign a contract for 10 more years," Guardiola said on Friday. "There are players that impact the legacy of this club and will be there forever.

"It’s not easy (to replace), but in the moment it’s going to happen we’ll see."

De Bruyne was instrumental to City snapping a seven-game winless run by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Wednesday in his first start for nearly three months.

Guardiola has been cautiously managing the playmaker's minutes but conceded he may be pressed into selecting De Bruyne again for Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace due to an injury crisis.

"We don't have many players so we'll see," added Guardiola. "Important (to have him) back but after a long time. (Now we play) three days, three days, three days, we'll see how does he react to this amount of games."

Phil Foden remains out due to illness, while Nathan Ake is sidelined by a muscle injury late on against Forest.

Rodri, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic and Oscar Bobb are also missing for the English champions.

Pep Guardiola says Kevin de Bruyne difficult to replace for Manchester City amid transfer rumours

Ruben Amorim has described Manchester United as a ‘massive club but not a massive team’ as the side goes through a period of transition. Speaking on Friday (Dec 6) ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford, Amorim said his side is in a difficult position and will need to regroup to win big trophies in the future. United will start the Premier League weekend in 13th place, having only mustered 19 points from 14 matches so far in the season.

"We're a massive club but we're not a massive team and we know it so it is no problem to say it," Amorim told a news conference on Friday.

"Our players have to understand that it's a challenging position. We're not one of the best teams in the league and we have to say and think that clearly but our past, our club is maybe the best one in the league.”

In October, the Red Devils sacked FA Cup-winning coach Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season. He was replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy on an interim basis before Amorim’s arrival as permanent head coach. The Portuguese gaffer suffered his first defeat of the season on Wednesday after a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

It was also his first defeat of the season as manager, having gone unbeaten during his spell at Sporting Lisbon.

With Forest enjoying a stellar 2024-25 season, Saturday's late kick-off won’t be an easy ride for the Old Trafford outfit. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side is on 22 points in the seventh place, but a win for United will see them go level on points with the former European champions. In positive news for the Amorim’s side, summer signing Leny Yoro is set to be available having missed the start of the season due to an injury.

Liverpool-Everton Premier League game postponed due to high winds: Club

World-renowned football manager Jose Mourinho has hit back at Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola over his ‘he won three, I won six’ Premier League titles remark following City's away loss to Liverpool. Mourinho, who managed several clubs in English top-flight football, including Chelsea (multiple stints), Manchester United and Spurs, said he won PL titles ‘fairly’, poking Pep’s City, who is facing 115 charges for allegedly breaching the English FA’S financial fair play rules.

The defending Premier League champions are going through their roughest and lowest patch since Pep took over almost a decade ago, losing seven straight matches on the trot across all competitions.&nbsp;

Following another blow at Anfield, the home fans began chanting, 'You’re getting sacked in the morning’, to which Pep held up six fingers in response, indicating the number of PL titles he won with the club thus far. That, however, brought back the memories of Jose Mourinho doing the same while managing United, where he held up three fingers to the opposing fans during an underwhelming campaign.&nbsp;

<h2>Would Pep suffer similar fate?</h2>

Meanwhile, upon asking Pep if he could suffer the same fate, he said perhaps not because he won more titles than Mourinho.&nbsp;

‘I hope not in my case…he won three, I won six…but we are the same like that. It was just to make our fans feel that what we have done is extraordinary. Responding to Guardiola’s comments, Jose said, "Guardiola said something about me... he won six trophies, and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly.”&nbsp;

"If I lost, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me. I don't want to win by dealing with 150 court cases,” Jose continued as quoted by Turkish outlet Hurriyet ahead of his team Fenerbahce's clash with Besiktas.

Meanwhile, a probe is underway into 115 charges levelled against Manchester City, with any decision expected to come before the end of the season.&nbsp;

‘I won fairly’ – Jose Mourinho to Pep Guardiola over ‘Premier League trophies won’ remark

Ange Postecoglou slammed Tottenham's flops as furious fans turned on the Australian and his spluttering side after Bournemouth condemned them to a shock 1-0 defeat on Thursday.

Dean Huijsen netted in the first half at the Vitality Stadium to leave Postecoglou's troubled team with just one win in their last six games in all competitions.

The 19-year-old defender's first goal in English football after his close-season move from Juventus exposed the flaws in Tottenham's error-prone defence.

Lacklustre Tottenham were fortunate not to lose by a bigger margin as Andoni Iraola's side wasted several chances to increase their lead.

Tottenham's sixth Premier League defeat this season was another setback for the under-fire Postecoglou after last weekend's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to 10-man Fulham.

"It's not good enough. We again fell into the trap of starting the game really well and then we conceded a really poor goal," Postecoglou said.

"It's disappointing. We have this propensity to shoot ourselves in the foot when we should be controlling games.&nbsp;

"It's something we've done consistently and we always pay the price for it."

Having wasted a golden opportunity to qualify for the Champions League last season, Postecoglou is beginning to hear criticism of his overly-attacking tactics and this dismal display will add to the Australian's doubters.&nbsp;

Tottenham are languishing in 10th place, six points adrift of the top four heading into Sunday's London derby against second-placed Chelsea.

"The fans have every right to be disappointed. I got some pretty direct feedback with the way that we are going at the moment and that is rightly so," Postecoglou said after he was jeered by Tottenham fans after the final whistle.&nbsp;

"I didn't like what was being said because I'm a human being but you're going to cop it.&nbsp;

"All I can say is I'm determined to get it right and will keep fighting until we do."

Ninth-placed Bournemouth have now beaten Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham at home this season.

Dominic Solanke scored 21 times for Bournemouth last term before moving to Tottenham in the close-season.

The England striker wasted a good chance to enjoy a scoring return to his old club when he blazed over from 10 yards after muscling through on goal.

Bournemouth's Evanilson nearly punished sloppy defending from Radu Dragusin and Destiny Udogie with a close-range effort that Fraser Forster pushed away for a corner.

But Tottenham's reprieve was short-lived as the Cherries took the lead from the resulting set-piece in the 17th minute.

Marcus Tavernier curled his corner towards the far post and Huijsen easily escaped Tottenham's woeful marking to head home from five yards.

<h2>Postecoglou angst</h2>

Tottenham were vulnerable at the back whenever Bournemouth attacked with intent and Forster had to make a superb save to repel Tavernier's close-range header from Milos Kerkez's cross.

Postecoglou finished the first half shaking his head in frustration and his dejected expression was unchanged after the break.

Postecoglou sent on Tottenham captain Son Heung-min, who has only scored four times this season, and the South Korean's first touch was a goal disallowed for offside.

James Maddison curled narrowly wide before Kepa Arrizabalaga saved well from Pedro Porro's volley.

Ryan Christie smashed against the post from Evanilson's pass and Tavernier drilled just wide as Bournemouth threatened to blow Tottenham away in the gale-force winds lashing the south-coast.

In Thursday's other game, Alex Iwobi scored twice as Fulham took advantage of a howler from Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen to beat the Seagulls 3-1 at Craven Cottage.

Marco Silva's men were gifted the lead in the fourth minute when Verbruggen, under minimal pressure, tried to pass to Carlos Baleba on the edge of the area, with Iwobi intercepting and slotting into the empty net.

Brighton levelled in the 56th minute when Baleba fired past Bernd Leno from 25 yards.

But Fulham went ahead again with 11 minutes remaining when Andreas Pereira's corner skimmed off Calvin Bassey and went in off Brighton's Matt O'Riley for an own goal.

Iwobi's curler sealed the points with three minutes left as Fulham moved up to sixth place after their third win in their last five league games.

Premier League: Tottenham rocked as teenager Dean Huijsen seals Bournemouth's shock win

Liverpool's Premier League lead was cut to seven points by Arsenal and Chelsea after the Reds conceded a 90th-minute equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Chelsea thrashed 10-man Southampton 5-1 to go second on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, who beat Manchester United 2-0.

Manchester City snapped their seven-game winless run by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 to go fourth.

Mohamed Salah's second-half double was not enough to extend Liverpool's seven-game winning run in all competitions as they failed to win for just the third time in 21 games under Arne Slot.

Twice the league leaders were forced to come from behind at St James' Park as Alexander Isak blasted Newcastle into a 1-0 half-time lead.

Curtis Jones levelled before Anthony Gordon restored Newcastle's lead.

Salah twice converted Trent Alexander-Arnold assists to turn the game around, taking his tally for the season to 15 goals.

However, there was a late sting in the tale as a rare error from Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Fabian Schar to squeeze in a late equaliser for the Magpies.

"He has done remarkably well for us and even today he was good. Unfortunately, he misjudged the situation," Liverpool boss Slot said of Kelleher's blunder.

<h2>Arsenal take advantage</h2>

Arsenal took full advantage by inflicting Ruben Amorim's first defeat as Manchester United boss.

Once again the Gunners were able to rely on their prowess from set-pieces to get the job done.

Jurrien Timber broke the deadlock, heading in Declan Rice's corner nine minutes into the second half.

William Saliba did not know much about the second, as he diverted in Thomas Partey's header from Bukayo Saka's corner, but the Frenchman did not care as Arsenal had the breathing space they craved.

A fourth consecutive win in all competitions confirmed Arsenal's return to form and applied a little pressure on Liverpool.

"A special day. It's a joy to play in this stadium with that energy, it's something incredible," Arteta said.

"We scored two set-pieces, but we could've scored from open play many more."

Amorim added: "The set-pieces killed the game. They can put a lot of players near the goalkeeper and it's almost impossible to fight for the ball.&nbsp;

"We already know we have to be better."

Chelsea put bottom-of-the-table Southampton to the sword at St Mary's even before the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Jack Stephens pulled Marc Cucurella's hair.

Axel Disasi's early opener for the Blues was cancelled out by Joe Aribo.

But Christopher Nkunku pounced on sloppy Southampton passing from the back to make it 2-1 before Noni Madueke added a third.

Stephens then saw red in a bizarre incident as he jostled with Cucurella from a Saints corner.

Cole Palmer made sure he got in on the act with Chelsea's fourth before Jadon Sancho's first goal since his loan move from Manchester United rounded off the scoring.

<h2>De Bruyne eases Man City crisis</h2>

City bounced back from their barren run thanks to Kevin De Bruyne's return to the starting line-up for the first time in nearly three months.

The Belgian teed up Bernardo Silva for the opening goal before firing in the second himself.

Jeremy Doku sealed a much-needed three points for Pep Guardiola's men, who are now nine off the top.

"Definitely we needed that after many games without winning," Guardiola said.

"Kevin De Bruyne was excellent. When he's fit he's so important for us. It's just one game but it was important to break this run."

Aston Villa ended their eight-game run without a win with a dominant first-half display to beat Brentford 3-1.

Morgan Rogers' wonder strike, Ollie Watkins' penalty and Matty Cash's effort made it 3-0 inside 34 minutes before Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard got one back.

Everton thrashed Wolves 4-0 thanks to two Craig Dawson own goals in a huge clash at the bottom of the table.

Ashley Young and Orel Mangala put the Toffees 2-0 up at half-time, before Dawson's goals twice rubbed salt in Wolves' wounds after the break.

Victory lifts Everton five points clear of the relegation zone, while Wolves sink to 19th.

Premier League: Liverpool held in Newcastle thriller, Arsenal inflict first defeat on Ruben Amorim's team

Virgil van Dijk says much of Liverpool's phenomenal success this season is down to the players' willingness to "go to war" for each other.

Arne Slot's team have 18 wins in their 20 matches in all competitions and the captain believes the mentality within the squad is a crucial factor, just months after the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Table-topping Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday to move 11 points clear of the champions in the Premier League and they are nine points ahead of their nearest challengers, Arsenal and Chelsea.

"Together with the staff he started working and making sure we have the quality to improve and win games.

"But he makes sure we keep working, are not satisfied, focus on what is ahead of us next and keep improving."

The Dutch international said former Feyenoord boss Slot had hit the ground running.

"He has come in and done very well so far and he has, in my opinion, inherited a very good squad not only as football players but as human beings -- guys who will go to war for each other," said the defender.

"(He has done) a lot of tactical work but at the end of the day it is about how much we want it as players."

Liverpool have won the English top flight just once since 1990 -- in 2020 -- and Van Dijk urged caution.

"I want to be there at the end of the season, that's the aim, and in order to be there at the end of the season we have to focus on what's ahead of us and not thinking about what's there in January or February," he said.

"Now it's Newcastle (on Wednesday) and (it's about) doing everything in my power and our power to be ready for a big one there as well."

Premier League: 'As football players...,' Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool players ready to 'go to war'

Liverpool have been used to second best during Pep Guardiola's era at Manchester City, but a 2-0 victory over the crisis-hit champions left little doubt over who are the team to beat in this season's Premier League title race.

Goals in either half from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah at Anfield on Sunday did not do justice to the scale of the Reds' domination as City succumbed to a sixth defeat in a seven-game winless run.

Arsenal and Chelsea are now Liverpool's closest challengers, nine points behind, with City 11 back and almost certain to finally loose their grip on the English top flight after an unprecedented four consecutive titles and six in the past seven seasons.

Guardiola reminded the Anfield crowd of that fact by raising six fingers when taunted with chants of "sacked in the morning".

The Catalan's defiance, though, could not mask the fact that City have rested on their laurels, while Liverpool have stepped up a level under Arne Slot.

Slot appeared to have the impossible job of succeeding the much-loved Jurgen Klopp.

The charismatic German brought Liverpool back to the top of English and European football. His title triumph in 2019/2020 was the club's first for 30 years and the only blot on City's dominance in recent times.

In contrast to Alex Ferguson's departure from Manchester United and Arsene Wenger's exit at Arsenal, Liverpool have turned a legendary figure leaving into a positive.

Klopp did much of the groundwork himself, rejuvenating the squad over his final 18 months in charge with the signings of Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.

Slot's only summer signing, Federico Chiesa, has barely featured due to injury.

But the injection of fresh blood, mixed with the experience of title winners in the prolific Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Roberson and Trent Alexander-Arnold has proved a winning combination.

Slot has been keen to give Klopp's legacy credit, but the Dutchman deserves his due for the small details that have produced a run of 18 wins from his first 20 games in all competitions.

<h2>'A great day'</h2>

Robertson and Alexander-Arnold's narrower positions have left Liverpool less vulnerable in transition and contributed to them having the best defensive record in the league.

Gravenberch has shone since being transformed into a holding midfielder, while Gakpo is finally delivering on his potential under his compatriot.

Slot has also managed to keep Liverpool's momentum rolling despite constant speculation over the futures of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, all of whom are out of contract at the end of the season.

"City are a fantastic team, four times champions in a row and they have quality to punish any team," said Van Dijk. "So, overall, it has been a great day. "It's game-by-game and stay calm. But games like this, when you win it like this, is always a good feeling."

It is not just the Premier League that Slot has so far bent to his will.

Liverpool are also top of the Champions League with a perfect record from five games, including a memorable 2-0 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Victory over City capped a dream week, but the former Feyenoord boss was still keen to use the English and European champions as the benchmark for his side's aspirations.

"Real Madrid and Manchester City have been and are so good, with managers that have won so many trophies, so it is always nice to come out of those situations as a winner," added Slot. "But they were able to win every single three days. We understand what we want to achieve is more than this winning once or twice, even against these big teams, if you want to win big things."

December may only be a day old, but already it is hard to see beyond Liverpool matching Manchester United's record tally for 20 English top-flight titles come May.

Liverpool have been used to second best during Pep Guardiola's era at Manchester City, but a 2-0 victory over the crisis-hit champions left little doubt over who are the team to beat in this season's Premier League title race.

ALSO READ: Harry Kane out for two weeks with hamstring injury, to miss Bayer Leverkusen clash in German Cup The Catalan's defiance, though, could not mask the fact that City have rested on their laurels, while Liverpool have stepped up a level under Arne Slot. Premier League: Liverpool piles misery on struggling Manchester City to go 11 points clear at the top

Pep Guardiola says he is braced for the challenge of turning around Manchester City's fortunes after the worst run of his managerial career ahead of a daunting trip to runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool. City are without a win in six games, with five consecutive defeats followed by a 3-3 Champions League draw against Feyenoord on Tuesday, when City blew a 3-0 lead in the final 15 minutes.

Defeat at Anfield on Sunday would leave the Premier League champions 11 points behind Arne Slot's men.

Guardiola's angst was clear in midweek as he appeared on camera after the Feyenoord game with a number of self-inflicted scratches on his face.

The 53-year-old recently extended his contract at the Etihad until 2027 and said the chance to overcome a rare period of adversity played a part in that decision.

"The moment I feel I'm not positive for the club, another one will come. It has to be (the case). But I want an opportunity to try to do it," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. "I don't want to run away. I want to be there. I want to rebuild the team in many aspects from now on until the end of the season, the next seasons, to try to continue up there."

<h2>'Squad is really good'</h2>

City have repeatedly rewritten the record books of English football during Guardiola's eight years in charge. They have won six Premier League titles in seven seasons, including an unprecedented four in a row, and won the treble in 2023. But Guardiola has repeatedly called his side "fragile" and lacking in confidence in recent weeks.

"In the first knock we are not as stable as we have always been," he said. "In the past when we were able to go 3-0 up, we didn't score the fourth, we didn't score the fifth, but the game was dead.

"Now in the first moments (of adversity) I don't know how we are going to react for obvious reasons that we have, for the desperation to win, for the absence of important players.

"The best test to prove how stable we are is Anfield because we cannot expect they will not have that moment and momentum and that is when we have to stand up as a team."

Guardiola, though, disagreed that City's squad is in need of an overhaul in the transfer market.

Ballon d'Or winner Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while Guardiola has had to cope without a number of other key players.

"You have to now change everything -- I don't completely agree with that. We cannot forget three months ago we were champions of the Premier League," he said. "The squad is really good, but we don't have the squad. It's not just Rodri, nominated the best player (in the world), it's many, many, many other players. So that is more difficult.

"We don't have six, seven important players. We have played two weeks, three weeks without four central defenders, two holding midfielders. But step by step, the players come back a little bit and hopefully we can be together for a long time."

Pep Guardiola keen to overturn Manchester City’s fortunes after worst managerial career run

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will need to be almost perfect if they are to catch runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool but feels momentum is building again after a poor run.

Arsenal, runners-up to Manchester City over the past two seasons, were expected to challenge again this year but instead Liverpool have raced eight points clear of second-placed City.

The Gunners go into Saturday's match against West Ham on a high after hammering Sporting Lisbon 5-1 in the Champions League in midweek.

Last weekend they beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 at home to end a four-match winless run in the league that cost them vital ground.

Victory at the London Stadium on Saturday would likely lift Arsenal to second in the table ahead of the Sunday matches, which includes a pivotal clash between Liverpool and City.

Arteta was asked at his pre-match press conference on Friday whether his team would have to be almost flawless to stand any chance of catching Liverpool, who have won 10 of their 12 games.

"If they continue that way, that's for sure, with the numbers they're producing and the amount of games they're winning," said the Arsenal manager.

"But the focus is on us, maintaining the consistency, especially in performances, that will give us the right to win a lot of games... this is a long run."

He said he felt momentum was building at Arsenal again after the international break.

"Winning lifts the energy and our confidence," he added. "They were two big wins for us and now it's about consistency, getting that momentum, take it further against a good opponent tomorrow and try to replicate the performance to win the game."

He added: "This is every three days so it doesn't matter what you did yesterday, it's about the next days, the next performance. Are you able to sustain high-level performance throughout the game as well because of how competitive every opponent is right now? And that's what we will try to do tomorrow."

Arsenal's uptick in form has coincided with the return of captain Martin Odegaard, who spent two months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Arteta said the "exceptional" midfielder had hit the ground running since his return earlier this month.

"Good players that are so consistent and so reliable, that can take the game to a different level and make the players better around them -- that's a huge quality of Martin's and he has been missed," he said.

Premier League: Arsenal must be near-perfect to catch Liverpool, says Mikel Arteta

Jude Bellingham said Real Madrid were beaten by "the best-performing team in Europe" as Liverpool's dismantling of the Spanish giants set a new bar in Arne Slot's stunning start at Anfield. Beleaguered Manchester City are next to run the gauntlet against the rampant Reds on Sunday as Liverpool sense the opportunity to land a knockout blow to Pep Guardiola's men in the Premier League title race.

Slot has won 17 and drawn one of his 19 matches in all competitions since replacing a legendary figure in Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool enjoy a commanding eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League and have one foot in the last 16 of the Champions League as the only side in the competition with a perfect record from five games.

Overcoming the might of Madrid was the sweetest one so far as Slott did what Klopp could not do during his glorious reign in leaving the kings of the Champions League with a bloodied nose.

Liverpool had not won in the previous eight meetings between the clubs, including defeats in the 2018 and 2022 Champions League finals.

"You know how special it is to play against a club that won this Champions League so many times, are the reigning champions and were a pain in the ass for Liverpool many times as well," said Slot. "We are happy where we are but we are not getting carried away by only winning in a group-stage game. This club wants more than only winning group-stage games."

Slot described the visits of Madrid and City within the space of five days as an "incredible week".

Halfway through they remain unscathed and are big favourites to take a huge step towards just a second league title in 35 years on Sunday.

Even at their strongest under Guardiola, City have not won in front of an Anfield crowd since 2003.

This version of the English champions is winless in six games and suffering from an existential crisis of confidence.

City blew a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord on Tuesday on the back of Guardiola's first ever five-game losing streak as a coach.

Now they have the chance to open up an 11-point lead that even Guardiola has conceded would be too much for his side to bridge.

"Man City is Man City. They have a bad time now but they have great players," said Liverpool's top goalscorer Mohamed Salah. "We have a game against them so hopefully, we win it and go 11 points clear."

In stark contrast to Manchester United's struggles after the departure of Alex Ferguson, Liverpool have thrived despite the loss of a much-loved and charismatic leader in Klopp.

Slot also credited the club's academy for adding depth to his squad after Caoimhin Kelleher and Conor Bradley shone against Madrid to mitigate the loss of Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury.

"We know that players that come in are really important to finish the games and if you want to win trophies, you need them," said Mac Allister. "Of course, you don’t want to be on the bench but we know that every guy here, when he comes in, does his best for the team.”

‘Europe’s best-performing team’ Liverpool aim to pile pain on Manchester City

Manchester United suffered a £14 million ($17.6 million) drop in total revenue to £143.1 million, taking a hit from their absence from the lucrative Champions League, first-quarter results showed Tuesday.

But the club announced a net profit of £1.4 million in the period from July to September, compared with a £25.8 million loss during the same period last year, which they attributed to favourable foreign exchange rates.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League under former manager Erik ten Hag last season -- their lowest-ever placing -- to miss out on Europe's top club competition.

That resulted in a 20.4 per cent drop in broadcasting revenue in the quarter ending September 30 to £31.3 million.

United's FA Cup win last season means they are competing in this season's Europa League instead.

Commercial revenue fell 5.6 per cent to £85.3 million, with matchday revenue decreasing by 3.3 per cent to £26.5 million.

The club recorded "exceptional" costs of £8.6 million. They said the figure "comprises costs incurred in relation to the restructuring of the group's operations, including the redundancy scheme implemented in the first quarter of financial year 2025".

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group took over football operations earlier this year after purchasing a minority stake.

They instigated a number of cost-saving measures, including plans to cut about 250 jobs.

United chief executive Omar Berrada said cost and headcount reductions remained "on track", as did work to renovate the club's Carrington training ground.

He confirmed a taskforce weighing up the benefits of redeveloping Old Trafford or building a new stadium on adjacent land was continuing its work.

United ended their financial year in June with net losses of £113.2 million despite earning record revenues -- their fifth straight year of losses.

They are predicting total revenue for 2025 of between £650 million and £670 million.

Ruben Amorim, who replaced the sacked Ten Hag earlier this month, took charge of his first game at Ipswich on Sunday, which ended 1-1.

United are 12th in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season, six points off the top four teams, who qualify for the Champions League.

Manchester United revenue takes a dip amid Champions League absence

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario faces "months" on the sidelines after breaking his ankle in Saturday's 4-0 win at Manchester City, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said.

The Italy international needed treatment after a first-half collision with City winger Savinho at the Etihad but was able to finish the game.

The 28-year-old, who had surgery on Monday, has been a virtual ever-present since he signed for Tottenham in 2023 but Postecoglou will now have to turn to veteran back-up Fraser Forster.

"It's not going to be weeks, it'll be months," Postecoglou said on Wednesday, adding he did not want to give a timeline.

"I think once we're past the rehab stage and he starts getting out (onto the training pitch), we'll have a clearer idea."

Postecoglou, speaking on the eve of his team's Europa League clash against Claudio Ranieri's Roma, said the severity of Vicario's injury came as a shock.

"We saw he'd picked up the injury during the game," he said.&nbsp;

"We saw him at half-time, but there was no doubt about him continuing."

"You digest that and then, post-game, he was sore but, you're kind of like, 'He's just played 60 minutes with a sore ankle, but we'll tape it up and go again'."

"Externally people now realise, it's a testament to him as a person. He's as tough as nails and tough as they come."

Postecoglou believes his team is making progress in his second season as in charge -- they are sixth in the Premier League and riding high in the Europa League table.

"I keep saying that we're a better side than we were last year, and we want to keep improving and if we keep improving, the areas where there are gaps, we will slowly overcome," he said.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario possibly out for months after surgery on broken ankle

West Ham produced a clinical away performance to beat resurgent Newcastle 2-0 on Monday, easing the pressure on beleaguered manager Julen Lopetegui.

Tomas Soucek headed the visitors in front against the run of play at St James' Park and Aaron Wan-Bissaka grabbed a rare goal in the second half to double the Hammers' lead.

Newcastle were unable to capitalise on the chances they created, failing to build on the momentum created by recent wins against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

The result, only West Ham's second win on the road this season, lifts them to 15 points, just three behind 10th-placed Newcastle, who missed out on the chance to move into the top six.

<h2>Relief for&nbsp;Lopetegui</h2>

It will be a huge relief for Lopetegui, whose future has been a matter of mounting speculation just months after he replaced David Moyes.

"We are happy, above all because we achieved the three points, which is one important thing, but above all because I think that we played well," the Spaniard told Sky Sports.

"We are happy, but tomorrow we are working hard, looking forward to the next challenge (against Arsenal). To think about the long future doesn't help, ever."

The home side made the early running and in-form forward Alexander Isak had the ball in the net in the fifth minute after a delicate dink over Lukasz Fabianski, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

West Ham, expected to face a tough test on Newcastle's home turf, showed little adventure in the opening stages.

But their first real foray up the pitch resulted in a corner and the unmarked Soucek powered home a header from Emerson Palmieri's set-piece in the 10th minute.

Newcastle, on a three-match winning run in all competitions, enjoyed the bulk of the possession as a lively first half unfolded but West Ham were robust in defence and were a constant threat on the counter.

Anthony Gordon had a glorious chance to level after a poor clearance from Jean-Clair Todibo but fired straight at Fabianski.

Minutes later Isak chested down a superb cross from Bruno Guimaraes but steered narrowly wide on the stretch.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle were again on the front foot at the start of the second half but it was West Ham who doubled their lead through Wan-Bissaka.

The former Manchester United man scored his first goal for West Ham and just his third career goal after picking up Jarrod Bowen's pass and firing across goalkeeper Nick Pope and into the net in the 53rd minute.

Howe brought on Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson in a bid to turn the tide but Newcastle failed to build up a head of steam against their determined opponents, who saw out the game with relative ease.

"The first 60 minutes, albeit we're losing the game 2-0, I think there was a lot of good play from us, we did open them up and had chances to score," said Howe.

"Unfortunately goals will always change the perception of everybody but up until that point I was pretty pleased. The last half an hour I didn't like us at all. I thought we lost our way a little bit, became a bit too desperate to score."

Premier League: West Ham stun Newcastle to ease pressure on Julen Lopetegui

Mohamed Salah urged Liverpool to deliver a hammer blow to Manchester City's fading title hopes after inspiring the Premier League leaders' dramatic 3-2 win against Southampton on Sunday.

Arne Slot's side moved eight points clear of second-placed City thanks to Salah's second half double at St Mary's.

After taking the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai's early strike, Liverpool were rocked by Adam Armstrong's equaliser before Mateus Fernandes put bottom-of-the table Southampton ahead in the second half.

As he has so often done before, Salah came to Liverpool's rescue with a typically predatory equaliser and a coolly converted penalty in the closing stages.

Liverpool's 10th win in 12 league games ensured they capitalised on City's dismal 4-0 defeat against Tottenham 24 hours earlier.

Chasing their first Premier League crown since 2020, the Reds have a golden opportunity to throttle City's hopes of a fifth successive title when Pep Guardiola's team visits Anfield on December 1.

City have lost five in a row in all competitions and Salah said: "Hopefully, we keep going in that direction. We have a game against them so hopefully, we win it and go 11 points clear."

"Man City is Man City. They have a bad time now but they have great players."

Salah now has 12 goals in all competitions this term, including six in his last five league games.

"They were very important, especially after being down 2-1. It's the most important thing to have won the game," he said.

"Each game is different. They had a game plan and played very well. We managed to come back and win the game."

<h2>Urgency and intensity</h2>

Having Salah in form has been crucial to Slot's dream beginning to life at Anfield.

Slot has made a remarkable start, winning 16 of his first 18 games in all competitions.

The former Feyenoord manager's deft touch has established Liverpool as title favourites in his maiden season at Anfield after replacing Jurgen Klopp.

Slot conceded Liverpool lacked intensity in the first hour at St Mary's, but he was pleased with the way his players responded to falling behind.

"In the second half I saw the intensity I was looking for in the first half. Southampton make it really difficult for many teams, including top clubs, and they made it difficult today, though we dominated the game completely in my opinion," Slot said.

"There was not enough urgency to arrive in the box in the first half, we just kept the ball instead of attacking the box."&nbsp;

"Although we fell behind in the second half we showed more urgency and intensity. That led to numerous chances and eventually two goals."

With Salah's contract due to expire at the end of this season and the forward yet to sign a new deal, Slot was quick to praise the contribution of his talisman.

"If you want to win you need to score goals and we know Mo can score," he said.&nbsp;

"For me his first goal is the most important as we scored out of nowhere, then after that it was just waiting for us to score another."

Before City's crucial trip to Anfield next weekend, Liverpool host Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday and Slot is relishing the blockbuster clashes.

"They are two teams who have dominated football the last few years. So two big games and that's why we needed to win today and that is what I am happy about," he said.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah wants Liverpool to pile on misery for Man City after sinking Saints

Pep Guardiola conceded Manchester City are in uncharted territory after a 4-0 thrashing by Tottenham inflicted a fifth consecutive defeat on the English champions and ended a 52-game unbeaten home run.

James Maddison struck twice in seven first-half minutes before Pedro Porro rubbed salt in the wounds of his former club and Brennan Johnson completed the rout.

City's first defeat on home soil from open play since the eve of the 2022 World Cup leaves them still five points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who play their game in hand at bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Sunday.

Guardiola has committed himself to turning around the poorest run of his managerial career after extending his contract until 2027 this week.

But hopes his new deal could revitalise a City side, that have won an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, proved short-lived.

"In eight years we have never lived this kind of situation," said Guardiola, who joined the club in 2016. "Now we have to live it and break it winning the next games, especially the next one. Now we see things in one way, maybe in a few weeks we see it differently."

Rodri paraded his Ballon d'Or trophy to the home fans before kick-off as his name was lit up across the Etihad pitch by firelight in an ostentatious show of support for the Spanish midfielder.

The 28-year-old is not expected to play again this season after suffering knee ligament damage in September and his absence has been at the heart of City's demise.

Guardiola's men did start strongly as Guglielmo Vicario denied Erling Haaland and the Norwegian had another shot deflected wide.

But the momentum of the match completely swung on Tottenham's first serious attack after 13 minutes.

Dejan Kulusevski's teasing cross picked out Maddison who applied a cool first-time finish.

"In this moment we are fragile defensively," added Guardiola. "We started really well as normal but we could not score and then after that we conceded. After that we conceded some more which is difficult for our emotions right now."

<h2>Spurs inconsistency</h2>

Maddison had been frozen out of Postecoglou's starting line-up in recent weeks and was keen to prove a point to his manager.

Son Heung-min's inventive pass freed the England international inside the box and he dinked the ball over the advancing Ederson to double Spurs' lead.

Inconsistency has been the scourge of Tottenham's season so far.

A 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich before the international break saw Postecoglou's men slip to 10th in the table.

But they have now twice won comprehensively in Manchester after a 3-0 win over United at Old Trafford.

"It is significant because obviously they've got an unbelievable record here at home," said Postecoglou. "We've reached these standards before. It's about now not dropping as we have in certain games."

Spurs quashed any idea of a comeback seven minutes into the second period.

The excellent Kulusevski crossed for Dominic Solanke and he patiently laid the ball back for Porro to blast home from close range.

Haaland clipped the bar from an almost impossible angle as City laboured to find a response.

Instead, they were hit with one final sucker punch as Timo Werner eased past Kyle Walker and crossed for Johnson to tap home at the far post.

The one glimmer of hope for City may be the return of Kevin De Bruyne after a two-month injury absence as a late substitute.

However, Guardiola has to find solutions fast if his side's title defence is to be maintained into the new year.

A daunting trip to face Liverpool at Anfield is next up in the Premier League, where City have not won in front of a crowd since 2003.

Premier League: Spurs end Manchester City’s 52-game unbeaten home run with 4-0 mauling

Pep Guardiola said on Friday he would remain at Manchester City even if the club were to face relegation from the Premier League over alleged breaches of financial rules.

Guardiola, who has won six Premier League titles in the past seven years with City, signed a two-year contract extension on Thursday, committing him to the English champions till 2027.

A hearing into the Premier League's 115 charges against City has been ongoing for several weeks, with a verdict expected before the end of the season.

ALSO READ:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/football/fff-rejects-psg-request-in-kylian-mbappe-55mn-euros-back-pay-dispute-778379">FFF rejects PSG request in Kylian Mbappe 55mn euros back pay dispute</a>

The club have strongly denied any financial wrongdoing, but could face a severe points penalty if found guilty of some or all the charges.

"I said that six months ago, one year ago when all the clubs accuse us of doing something wrong. If we get relegated, I will be here," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Tottenham's visit on Saturday. "If they send us to the Conference (fifth tier) we will come up and up and come back to the Premier League. I knew it then and I feel it now."

Guardiola's decision to extend his deal is also a boost during a rare period of on-field turmoil.

For the first time in the Spaniard's managerial career, his team have lost four consecutive matches.

But the 53-year-old hit back at City's critics, pointing to their success in becoming the first side to ever win four English top-flight titles in a row.

"When you are here for nine years, with a long time at one club, you live all the scenarios, all the situations," added Guardiola. "You're able to lose four games in a row, but at the same time you're able to win four Premier Leagues in a row.

"The difference is that most of the teams are able to lose four games in a row in different competitions but just one team won four Premier Leagues in a row."

City's poor run began with a League Cup exit to Tottenham before Premier League defeats to Bournemouth and Brighton either side of a 4-1 loss at Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.

All four losses came on the road and Guardiola is hoping for some home comforts when City return to the Etihad Stadium, where they have not been beaten in open play in two years.

"We have to start to win games, we know it," he added. "We are coming back at home, hopefully we can perform well and start to take our rhythm."

"We have to start to win games, we know it," he added. "We are coming back at home, hopefully we can perform well and start to take our rhythm." ‘Even if we get relegated, I will be here’, says Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola amid financial charges breach

Pep Guardiola has extended his contract as manager of Premier League champions Manchester City for a further two seasons, saying Thursday "I could not leave now" with the club facing arguably the toughest period of his time at the Etihad Stadium.

There had been speculation the 53-year-old's City career could be coming to an end, with the club facing an uncertain future due to an ongoing hearing over 115 breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations -- charges they deny completely.

City are also currently on a four-game losing streak in all competitions -- the worst of Guardiola's managerial career, excluding penalty shoot-outs -- although they are second in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Liverpool.

But reports emerged on Tuesday that Guardiola, who took over at City in 2016 and has since won a total of 18 trophies across all competitions, including six Premier League titles, would stay. This was despite City's director of football Txiki Begiristain, a close ally of Guardiola, having already confirmed his exit at the end of the campaign.

Begiristain is to be replaced by Sporting Lisbon's Hugo Viana, a former Newcastle player.

But with City on an English record-breaking run of four successive top-flight titles, Guardiola -- who led the club to a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble in 2023 -- said he had changed his mind about this being his last season at the Etihad.

"Now I cannot leave," the Catalan boss said in an interview on the club's website after agreeing to remain at the Etihad until 2027. "Maybe the four defeats were the reason why I felt I cannot leave."

Guardiola, who has repeatedly been asked about his future in recent weeks, added: "Since the beginning of the season I was thinking a lot in the moment, I will be honest, I thought (this season) should be the last one.

"But in the same moment the situation comes, the problems we have in the last month, I felt now was not the time to leave. I don't want to let the club down, I would say. "I felt the confidence from the chairman (Khaldoon Al Mubarak) and Txiki and everyone, and I had the feeling I have to do it."

Pep Guardiola says 'I could not leave now' as he signs new deal with Premier League champions Manchester City

Premier League clubs voted to amend sponsorship rules on Friday despite calls from some clubs, including champions Manchester City, to delay any agreement.

City challenged the league's associated party transaction (APT) rules, which assess whether deals between clubs and entities linked to their ownership represent fair market value, on competition law grounds earlier this year.

Since a takeover from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, vice president of the United Arab Emirates, in 2008, City have become the dominant force in English football.

But their rivals have questioned the legitimacy of major sponsorship contracts from companies with links to Abu Dhabi.

The APT case was unrelated to the 115 Premier League charges that City face for historical breaches of the competition's financial regulations.

An arbitration panel found aspects of the previous APT rules unlawful, sparking a disagreement between City and the league over the appropriate next steps.

The English top flight said in its summary that City were "unsuccessful in the majority of (their) challenge" and that the tribunal considering the case had determined the APT rules were necessary and pursued a legitimate objective.

But City, in their own statement, said the tribunal had declared the league had abused a dominant position under competition law.

The major change to the rules is to include shareholder loans as APTs and apply a fair market interest rate.

City had support for a postponement from Aston Villa, whose owner Nassef Sawiris told the Daily Telegraph earlier this week that a delay was needed to achieve unanimity on the rules.

Nottingham Forest and Saudi-backed Newcastle also voted against the rule change, which passed with a 16-4 majority in favour from the other Premier League clubs.

"The amendments to the rules address the findings of an arbitration tribunal following a legal challenge by Manchester City to the APT system earlier this year," the Premier League said in a statement.

"The purpose of the APT rules is to ensure clubs are not able to benefit from commercial deals or reductions in costs that are not at fair market value (FMV) by virtue of relationships with associated parties.

"These rules were introduced to provide a robust mechanism to safeguard the financial stability, integrity and competitive balance of the league."

The foundations for City's success were built before stringent rules on APTs and financial sustainability were applied.

By contrast, Newcastle have been frustrated in their attempts to quickly challenge at the top end of the table through major investment since a takeover from the Saudi Public Investment Fund in 2021.

Premier League clubs approve changes to 'associated party' sponsorship rules

Chelsea captain Reece James has suffered a new injury setback after being ruled out of Saturday's clash against Leicester with a hamstring problem.

James only returned to action in October after missing the start of the season.

But Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca revealed on Thursday that the 24-year-old England right-back will not be available for the trip to the King Power Stadium in the Premier League this weekend.

Maresca hopes the problem won't keep James out for too long, but given the Chelsea captain's recent history of injury woes, the Italian is not willing to take any risks.

"Reece, unfortunately, felt something small and we don't want to take any risks this weekend," Maresca told reporters. "Hopefully it's not something longer. He felt something, he has to be out and then we'll see. It's his hamstring, a muscle problem."

James has struggled to stay fit for much of the last two seasons, but Maresca is still confident he can eventually shake off his injury-plagued reputation.

"For sure," he added. "But in this moment it is not happening."

Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill pulled out of England duty over the international break due to fitness concerns, while Maresca also has doubts over Romeo Lavia, Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana and Jadon Sancho.

"Some of them are better, some of them we'll test today," he said of Chelsea's walking wounded.

England captain Harry Kane criticised the nine players who opted out of England duty, insisting playing for the Three Lions should come before anything else.

There were suggestions that managers had persuaded their England players to stay away to avoid injuries at a busy time of the season.

But, asked if he had any contact with the England camp over the withdrawals of Palmer and Colwill, Maresca said: "To be honest we played Arsenal and then I left for a week."

Maresca will be making his first trip back to Leicester since guiding the Foxes to promotion from the Championship last season, before quitting to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

It will be an emotional occasion for Maresca, who said: "First of all I'm excited and also thankful.

"It was a fantastic season because I met good people and in terms of players it was fantastic.

"We had a fantastic connection between the players and staff, this is something you need to create when you want to make something important.

"I will be thankful to them all my life, we have a special connection."

Chelsea captain Reece James out with fresh injury, confirms coach Enzo Maresca

Tottenham have appealed against the length of Rodrigo Bentancur's seven-game suspension for his controversial comments about team-mate Son Heung-min.

Bentancur was banned by the Football Association on Monday, ruling him out of six Premier League fixtures and a League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.

The 27-year-old Uruguay midfielder was charged with misconduct in September over a television interview he gave in his home country in June, with his reference to South Korea star Son's race making it an aggravated breach.

However, Tottenham are unhappy with the amount of games Bentancur will miss and released a statement on Wednesday confirming their intention to appeal.

"While we accept the guilty finding against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we believe the subsequent sanction is severe," the statement read.

"Rodrigo will remain suspended from domestic competitions while the appeal is heard and the club will make no further comment during this time."

Bentancur was asked during an interview to show the shirt of a Tottenham player, and replied: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same."

He apologised on Instagram to Son for his remarks, and Son accepted that apology in a statement on the same platform.

"I've spoken with Lolo (Bentancur). He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised," the South Korea captain said.

"Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all."

Bentancur was also fined £100,000 ($126,000), with the disciplinary panel insisting it should have been "reasonably foreseeable" to him that his remarks about Son would be widely distributed.

The panel said they took into account as mitigation his sincere apology and previous clean disciplinary record.

Tottenham Hotspur to appeal against length of Rodrigo Bentancur suspension for comments about team-mate Son

Pep Guardiola is set to extend his stay in charge of Manchester City by signing a one-year extension to his contract, the Athletic reported on Tuesday. Guardiola has won six Premier League titles and the club's first ever Champions League since arriving at the Etihad in 2016. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach's current contract expires at the end of the season. There had been speculation that Guardiola's time could be coming to an end with City facing an uncertain future due to an ongoing hearing over 115 breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations.

The club's director of football Txiki Begiristain, a close ally of Guardiola, has confirmed his departure at the end of the season. The Athletic reported that the 53-year-old will pen a one-year extension to his deal with the option for another year.

Guardiola also signed his two previous contract extensions at City during the November international break. The English champions return to action on Saturday, looking to snap an unprecedented losing streak for their manager.

Guardiola has lost four consecutive games for the first time in his coaching career. Hit by the loss of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri to a season-ending knee injury, City have fallen five points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after defeats to Bournemouth and Brighton.

They also lost 4-1 to Sporting Lisbon in their last Champions League outing and were eliminated from the League Cup by Tottenham. But the retention of one the most decorated coaches in football history would be a massive boost to the morale of City players and fans.

Guardiola has won 15 major honours in total during his eight full seasons in Manchester, which also includes two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Club World Cup and one UEFA Super Cup.

Pep Guardiola set to extend stay as Manchester City boss: Reports

Ruben Amorim believes he is "where I am supposed to be" after his first week as Manchester United's new manager.

The Portuguese boss, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag, arrived at the club's Carrington training complex on Monday following a 4-2 win in his final match in charge of Sporting Lisbon.

On Friday, United released a short clip from Amorim's first interview with the club's in-house TV channel showing him looking around a floodlit Old Trafford.

"You watch on TV and you know that it's big and it's impressive, but when you are here you can feel it and I think you feel the history," Amorim said.

"I'm really, really proud to be a Manchester United coach, so it's amazing. It's a real honour to be here."

Told by the interviewer that there is a "weight to the place but it does lift you up", Amorim added: "That's really funny because I feel very relaxed.

"Maybe because it's not gameday. When we have a game I'm a different guy but I really don't feel the weight.

"I'm really excited and I'm quite relaxed you know. I think I am where I am supposed to be. That's the feeling."

Amorim's first match in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24, following the international break.

United are 13th in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season but are only four points off the top four.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, put in temporary charge of United after Ten Hag's dismissal, on Friday issued an emotional farewell message to the club, where he also starred as a striker.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss, appointed as an assistant coach in July on a two-year contract, had voiced a desire to stay at Old Trafford under Amorim.

But United issued a statement on Monday confirming the 48-year-old would not be part of the new coaching set-up.

That's the feeling." Amorim's first match in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24, following the international break. Premier League: Ruben Amorim says Man Utd is 'where I'm supposed to be'

Bruno Fernandes hopes new manager Ruben Amorim can "change the energy" at struggling Manchester United after the Portuguese coach checked in at the Premier League club.

Amorim arrived at the Carrington training complex on Monday for meetings but cannot begin coaching until his work visa is confirmed.

The 39-year-old, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag, guided Sporting Lisbon to two titles in four seasons and left them with 11 wins in 11 league matches this season.

"Sometimes a person can change the energy of a space, if it's the right moment," Fernandes, who left Sporting for United just before Amorim took over, told MUTV.

"We hope that he can come and this is the right moment for him to come and bring his energy, bring his qualities and his knowledge of football, because he's done something really, really special at Sporting.

"If someone doubts that, it's about just looking at the past. Sporting was to be about 20 years without winning the league and he got back to win the league, and he won it two times in four years with a really youthful team, in a moment of change."

Captain Fernandes said managing United, who have not won the Premier League since 2013, would be a different challenge from the Sporting job.

"Obviously you can't bring or transform what he has done at Sporting into here, because you have different players, you have different ways of play and everything," he said.

"I'm pretty sure that the idea of football he has, independent of the way he wants to play, is going to be a good one and it's going to bring us success."

Amorim is United's sixth permanent managerial appointment since the end of Alex Ferguson's trophy-filled 27-year reign in 2013.

UEFA launches investigation against Premier League referee David Coote

The Football Association is investigating after a video was posted on social media appearing to show Premier League referee David Coote making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Referees body Professional Game Match Officials Ltd announced on Monday that Coote, 42, had been suspended pending a full investigation.

The Football Association is also looking at Coote's comments. It is understood that part of its investigation will centre on whether Coote's reference to Klopp's nationality constitutes an aggravated breach of its misconduct rules.

"We are aware of the matter, and we are investigating it," an FA spokesman said on Tuesday.

According to the clip, Coote, who refereed Liverpool's 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday, said Klopp was "arrogant" and used offensive language.

Retired referee Mike Dean, now a TV pundit, believes the incident will have a damaging effect on officials throughout English football.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the 56-year-old said: "As referees you can't put yourself in that position no matter what you do."&nbsp;

"You can say things away from camera, you can talk amongst your friends and things and colleagues, but you can't let somebody video this and then hope that it's never going to come out."

The video appears to refer to a match that Coote officiated between&nbsp;Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished 1-1. Liverpool had already been crowned champions.

Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee had been too lenient in his treatment of Burnley challenges.

Klopp left Liverpool at the end of last season after nearly nine years in charge at Anfield.

The German was also critical of Coote over an incident in a match against Arsenal last season in which Gunners midfielder Martin Odegaard's hand made contact with the ball.

Coote, as VAR, did not advise on-field official Chris Kavanagh to review the incident.

Coote was also the VAR in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in October 2020 when Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford inflicted a season-ending injury on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Pickford was not sent off for the challenge and did not face retrospective action because, under FA rules, that can only happen if an incident was not seen either at the time or when it was reviewed by VAR.

Ruud van Nistelrooy leaves Manchester United after Ruben Amorim joins as new manager

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored one goal and created two more in his team's spirited 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City on Sunday, a victorious send-off for Ruud van Nistelrooy in his finale as interim manager.

United, who have had three wins and a draw across all competitions since manager Erik ten Hag was fired on Oct. 28 and replaced temporarily with Van Nistelrooy, are 13th in the league table on 15 points, four points adrift of the top three. Leicester are 15th on 10 points.

Fernandes, who went his last 17 games under Ten Hag without scoring, celebrated his 250th appearance for United with a goal in the 17th minute, latching on to a back-heel pass from Amad Diallo before unleashing a low hard shot into the far corner. It was the skipper's fourth goal in four games for Van Nistelrooy.

"It was a long time that I wasn't scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games," Fernandes said. "Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve."

Leicester defender Victor Kristiansen was credited with United's goal in the 38th minute when Fernandes missed an intended header of Noussair Mazraoui's cross but the ball pinged off his thigh before deflecting off Kristiansen and in.

Alejandro Garnacho netted United's third in the 82nd minute when Fernandes spotted him on the left and the Argentinian sent a curling shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the top corner. The 20-year-old looked emotionless after bagging his third league goal of the season.

"Garnacho scored a banger but didn't celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans," Fernandes said. "I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.

"I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player, we have difference makers. They are the ones who win us games."

Fans at Old Trafford sang Van Nistelrooy's name throughout the game's final few minutes.

Ten Hag's permanent replacement Ruben Amorim arrives on Monday from Sporting, with his first game as United boss scheduled for Nov. 24 at Ipswich Town. Van Nistelrooy's future with United is still to be determined although the team's former striker has said he wants to remain on staff.

"I absolutely believe this club has all the ingredients to get back to the levels I knew as a player," Van Nistelrooy wrote in Sunday's game programme. "From tomorrow, I will be getting behind our new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and I urge everyone who loves the club to do the same."

Fernandes had kind words for the interim boss.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy feels the club, he loves the club, he wants to bring joy to the players," he said. "He brought everyone with a smile to the games, he just wanted us to enjoy it. We wanted to say goodbye as a manager for him properly because he did good things for us.

"It's a new era, a new manager means everything changes but what hasn't changed is that this club has to get back to where it belongs."

Sunday's game deteriorated along with the weather in the second half, although Jordan Ayew had an excellent chance for the visitors when he smashed a shot at the near post which was tipped wide for a corner.

"It was a fairly even game in general play but in decisive moments we didn't defend well enough," Leicester manager Steve Cooper said. "We had good phases in the game but you have to be productive at both ends of the pitch.

"We weren't the threat we are capable of being, we fell short."

United have lost just two of the last 18 Premier League games against the Foxes.
