Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe refused to guarantee Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford as he admitted the club is not "where it should be" under the troubled boss.

Ratcliffe had a chance to quash reports that Ten Hag is in danger of the sack when he spoke ahead of United's crucial Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But the 71-year-old's downbeat assessment of United's predicament was hardly encouraging for Ten Hag as he fights to save his job.&nbsp;

"I don't want to answer that question. I like Erik. I think he's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call," Ratcliffe told the BBC on Friday.

Ten Hag's side are languishing in 13th place after winning only two of their first six league matches.

They suffered a dismal 3-0 home defeat against Tottenham last weekend and blew a two-goal lead in their 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

United's struggles have piled pressure on Ten Hag, who only survived a woeful eighth-place finish last season after Ratcliffe and his advisors conducted an internal review into the Dutchman's turbulent two-year reign.

Ratcliffe reportedly spoke to former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel about the United job during the review before opting to keep faith with Ten Hag, who had masterminded a surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May.

But the British billionaire, who took charge of United's football operations after buying a stake in the club in February, was more equivocal about Ten Hag on Friday when he was pressed on his manager's travails.

Insisting any decision on the former Ajax boss would be made in conjunction with United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada, Ratcliffe said: "It's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

Premier League: Jim Ratcliffe refuses to guarantee Erik Ten Hag's Man Utd future

Southampton have been on the wrong side of results in the Premier League, but the club continues to fly when it comes to nurturing academy products. Part of the academy product is the iconic and legendary figure Matt Le Tissier. The legendary player spoke exclusively to WION (World Is One News) on Friday (Oct 4) and opened up about the latest partnership between Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools and Southampton.

<h2>Matt Le Tissier speaks to WION</h2>

Renowned for his ability on the field, Le Tissier’s down-to-earth approach was the highlight as he spoke to WION’s Aditya Pimpale. According to the former England international, Arsenal remain the favourites to win the Premier League title while Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham will tightly contest for the Ballon d’Or this season.

<h2>Question: How is Southampton looking forward to working in Indian football?</h2>

Yes, it is a great launch and we want Indian football to grow with our state-of-the-art facilities and assistance. There are a lot of things to be learned and I hope there will be a day when India will have a player in the Premier League.

<h2>Question: Where do you see Indian football 10 years after the latest collaboration?</h2>

Well, the aim is to get high rewards and if there is a player in the Premier League from India in the next 10 years, then that is a success for us. The BBFS will be of great help while Southampton will look to give every possible support to make it happen.

<h2>Question: Who is the favourite to win the Premier League title?</h2>

Well, before Rodri got injured I had Man City to win the Premier League title, but now I am backing Arsenal to win the Premier League. They look like ready to go and take the next step and have shown the hunger in last two seasons. I just about give the nod to Arsenal if it goes down to the wire in the title race.

<h2>Question: Who is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or?</h2>

It is another tough call but I will back Erling Haaland to win as he keeps on scoring goals for Man City. I won’t be surprised if either Jude Bellingham or Vinicius Jr win the Ballon d’Or as they all had a great season. Rodri’s injury has somewhat put him behind in the race but it will be an interesting race to win the Ballon d’Or.

Exclusive: Arsenal will pip Man City to win the Premier League - Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier

Joining Ipswich Town might have seemed unthinkable for Kalvin Phillips when he was one of the first names on the England team sheet and his career was on a steep upward curve.

But now the 28-year-old former Leeds United midfielder is thankful to the Suffolk club for helping rebuild a career that was going completely off the rails.

Phillips played almost every minute of England's run to the final of the delayed Euro 2020 tournament after bursting on to the international scene under former coach Gareth Southgate.

His rapid rise resulted in a 42 million pounds ($55 million) move to Manchester City in July 2022 but rather than take his game to the next level -- Phillips stalled.

City manager Pep Guardiola's comments that Phillips returned from the Qatar World Cup out of shape hardly helped and the following January he was loaned out to West Ham United.

Phillips' stock fell even further there, giving away a goal on his debut, getting sent off in his second league start then being substituted at halftime in his third. He reached a new low in a game at Newcastle United in March when he came on as a substitute with West Ham leading 3-1 and conceded a penalty as the Hammers eventually lost 4-3.

There are positive signs, however, that Phillips has turned a corner since joining promoted Ipswich on loan and Saturday's trip to West Ham offers the chance to prove a few people wrong.

"(When coming to Ipswich) I made a decision that I wanted to play my football, not stress free, but with less stress and less eyes on me maybe," Phillips told former Leeds team mate Patrick Bamford on the My Mate's a Footballer podcast.

"At West Ham I felt like there were quite a lot of eyes on me because it was my first loan move since going to City. Obviously it didn't work out well and I got quite a bit of stick. Sometimes you can handle that well, sometimes you can go the other way and handle it not so well!"

Phillips is full of praise for Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna whose team has earned four draws from six league matches in the club's first top-flight campaign for 22 years.

"The main reason I came to Ipswich was just to get back playing football week in week out, and make sure that I'm fit again, and I'm not getting many injuries," Phillips said. "Every club I'd go to, the manager and nutritionist, they'd always speak about weight before they'd say anything else. At a point it peed me off a little bit.

"Now I've come to Ipswich and the manager is an unbelievable person as well as a manager. We spoke about all the past stuff that happened in my career. He just said he wanted me to get to where I was when I was at Leeds."

Phillips was not even part of the conversation when England's squad was announced on Thursday for next week's Nations League fixtures.

For now though, all that he cares about is playing football again with a smile on his face.

"From day one, McKenna made me feel like I was wanted there and that was going to play a massive part this season," he said.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident of his team’s revival of fortunes after the club’s recent setbacks in the Premier League and Europa League. Speaking on Wednesday (Oct 2), the Red Devils boss backed his team to bounce back as they prepare to face Porto in the Europa League. Questions have been raised about ten Hag’s future after they lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

<h2>Eric ten Hag backs Man United for revival</h2>

"We are going to make a success from the season," he&nbsp;told Sky Sports.

"Nothing is easy, but this is nothing for me to panic about," he added. "We can sort [the problems] out, this team can sort this out."

"We created a togetherness in the summer with the ownership and the leadership. We made this agreement, and we were all behind it. We know the strategy [is to bring in] young players in a transition period. They also know in May in all my last six seasons there were always trophies and that is what we are aiming for."

So far this season, United have lost three matches in the Premier League, having collected only seven points in six matches. Two of the three defeats have come at Old Trafford, highlighting further issues in the team’s fortunes.

United will face Porto away in the Europa League, while their next Premier League game is against Aston Villa. Bournemouth's record signing Evanilson scored his first goal for the club as the Cherries beat Southampton 3-1 on Monday.

The Brazilian international sparked a three-goal blitz from the home side in the opening 39 minutes as Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo also struck.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis pulled a goal back for Saints early in the second half, but they remain in the bottom three and without a win since their return to the Premier League.

Bournemouth climb above Manchester United into 11th with their second win of the campaign.

Evanilson has big shoes to fill as the replacement for Dominic Solanke, who departed to Tottenham for a club record fee last month.

The £40 million striker did not get off to a good start as he missed a penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in Bournemouth's last home game.

However, he banished those memories by latching onto Marcus Tavernier's quickly taken free-kick on 17 minutes.

"It is a goal we've been expecting of Evanilson," said Bournemouth assistant manager Tommy Elphick, who was deputising for suspended boss Andoni Iraola.

"He is so intelligent and makes such cute runs. We haven't been finding him enough so I'm pleased for him."

Ouattara was then in the right place to deflect Lewis Cook's shot past Aaron Ramsdale.

Semenyo has so far filled the void left by Solanke and his fierce drive found the bottom corner for his third goal in six Premier League appearances this season.

It was a familiar tale for Southampton as their dominance of possession counted for little in terms of points.

Russell Martin's men sit second bottom with just one point from their opening six games.

"I am so hurt by the first-half performance after the first goal. I didn't recognise our team," said Martin.

"There was no aggression or courage. They were looking around and in self-preservation mode on the pitch. I didn’t like it one bit. They showed fight in the second half, but it was too late."

Last season all three promoted sides were relegated from the Premier League for the first time since 1997/98.

The early evidence of this season also suggests the gulf between the Championship and the top tier is becoming increasingly difficult to breach for teams coming up.

Ipswich and Leicester have also failed to register a win in their opening six league matches but do at least sit outside the bottom three.

Premier League: Evanilson off the mark in Bournemouth win over Southampton

Tottenham piled more pressure on Erik ten Hag's position as Manchester United manager with a dominant 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Spurs made a flying start when Brennan Johnson tapped in from Micky Van de Ven's storming run after three minutes.

Tottenham should have added to their lead long before United were reduced to 10 men when captain Fernandes was shown a straight red card on 42 minutes.

Dejan Kulusevski finally doubled the visitors advantage two minutes into the second half before Dominic Solanke rounded off the scoring.

Ten Hag began the season under scrutiny after surviving an internal review at the end of last season.

A shock FA Cup final victory over Manchester City was widely credited with saving the former Ajax coach's job after finishing eighth in the Premier League last season.

A third defeat in United's first six league games of the new campaign leaves the Red Devils down in 11th and time surely running out for their beleaguered boss.

United face daunting trips to Porto in the Europa League and Aston Villa on league duty next weekend before a two-week international break that clubs often use to implement managerial change.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was himself under pressure just over a week ago.

But Spurs have won four games in 12 days and turned in arguably their best performance of the Australian's reign.

Van de Ven's stunning surge from well inside his own half to the United by-line set the tone as his cross left Johnson a simple task to score for the fourth consecutive game.

Premier League: Tottenham beat 10-man Man Utd to up pressure on Erik ten Hag

Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool to the top of the Premier League as the Egypt star's penalty sealed a 2-1 win over&nbsp;struggling Wolves on Saturday.

Salah struck in the second half after Rayan Ait Nouri had cancelled out Ibrahima Konate's opener for Liverpool.

Arne Slot's side have won five of their six league games this season and sit one point clear of second placed Manchester City, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle earlier in the afternoon.

Slot insisted this week that Liverpool are yet to prove themselves title contenders, but the Dutchman has made a strong impression at the start of the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield.

Since their shock home loss to Nottingham Forest, the Reds have reeled off four successive victories in all competitions.

Liverpool fans packed into one side of Molineux chanted Slot's name loudly as the final minutes wound down on their latest win.

The 46-year-old has masterminded one of the best starts to a managerial reign in Liverpool history. If they continue at this pace, it will be hard for even Slot to deny their title credentials.

The only concern for Slot was a late injury to Andrew Robertson that forced the Scotland left-back to limp off.

"The first 20 minutes weren't great. It was a real tough start for us but eventually we took control of the game and scored the first goal," Slot said.

"Wolves have a really good game plan for every opponent and it was the same for us. It's always nice to win, especially away."

Liverpool, who last won the title in 2020, host Bologna in their second Champions League fixture on Wednesday before travelling to Crystal Palace in next weekend.

Winless and at the bottom of the table, Wolves were weakened even further by a virus that&nbsp;ripped through their squad this week.

Given their dire circumstances, Gary O'Neil's team competed gamely in the first half.

Matheus Cunha's curler tested Alisson Becker on the Liverpool keeper's return from injury.

But Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone had to make a superb save when he spread himself to block Dominik Szoboszlai's close-range effort from Robertson's cross.

&nbsp;

Without a clean-sheet in their previous 17 league games, Wolves couldn't hold out forever and Konate broke the deadlock in first half stoppage-time.

Jota did well to whip over a pin-point cross from the left and Konate timed his run perfectly to power his header past Johnstone's weak attempted save from six yards.

It was the French centre-back's first goal in the Premier League after three years with Liverpool.

Salah wasted a golden opportunity to double Liverpool's advantage early in the second half.

Mario Lemina took a pass from Johnstone on the edge of his own area and carelessly conceded possession to Salah, who shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Wolves capitalised on that escape to equalise thanks to shambolic Liverpool defending in the 56th minute.

Konate tried to let the ball run for a goal-kick after a miscommunication with Alisson, but Jorgen Strand Larsen nudged him out of the way and picked out Carlos Forbs.

Liverpool again failed to deal with the danger after Forbs couldn't convert and Ait-Nouri finally stabbed home from close-range.

But Liverpool were unbeaten in their last 141 Premier League matches when leading at halftime, dating back to 2016 against Bournemouth.

Slot's team hit back emphatically in the 61st minute as Jota was pushed over in the area by Nelson Semedo as the pair challenged for Alexander-Arnold's cross.

Salah stepped up to smash the penalty past Johnstone for his fifth goal this season.

Konate redeemed himself for his earlier mistake with a last-ditch tackle to deflect Forbs' shot over after the forward surged through on goal.

Premier League: Arne Slot's Liverpool go on top after Mohamed Salah dismantles Wolves

Manchester City failed to shrug off the absence of Rodri in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle as they dropped Premier League points for the second consecutive game on Saturday.

The Spaniard has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury picked up in last weekend's fiery 2-2 draw with title rivals Arsenal.

Josko Gvardiol put the visitors in front at St James' Park, but Newcastle were well worthy of the point given to them by Anthony Gordon's second-half penalty.

A point edges City two points clear at the top of the table, but they could be overtaken by Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal by the end of the weekend.

Guardiola described Rodri, who is unbeaten in his past 52 Premier League appearances stretching back to February 2023, as&nbsp;"irreplaceable" but vowed to find a collective solution.

Teenager Rico Lewis was thrust forward into a central midfield role alongside Mateo Kovacic.

But City lacked the control and poise so often provided by Rodri on and off the ball.

Newcastle have lost only one of their opening six Premier League games of the season but until now results have been better than the performances from Eddie Howe's men this season.

The Magpies were also missing key personnel with last season's top goalscorer Alexander Isak out injured.

Neither side had seriously threatened until Gvardiol collected Jack Grealish's pass inside the box and produced a finish Erling Haaland would be proud of by curling a low shot into the far corner.

City should have quickly doubled their lead when Nick Pope's clearance fell to Ilkay Gundogan, who mishit his attempted lob of the England goalkeeper rather than picking out Haaland.

Newcastle had to wait till first-half stoppage time to test Ederson.

Joelinton brilliantly took down a Kieran Trippier free-kick and fired goalwards only to be denied by his Brazil team-mate.

<h2>Gordon levels for Newcastle</h2>

However, Newcastle were rewarded for a bright start to the second half.

Gordon got in behind and was brought down by Ederson as he tried to round the goalkeeper.

The England international picked himself up to confidently slot home the penalty.

Roared on by vociferous home crowd, Newcastle had the champions clinging on.

Referee Jarred Gillett turned down appeals for a second penalty when Kyle Walker challenged Joelinton before Ederson flew off his line to deny Gordon.

Guardiola responded with the introduction of last season's Premier League player of the year in Phil Foden and City turned the momentum around to finish strongly.

Foden had City's best chance to snatch all three points when he fired too close to Pope.

And Pope was needed to produce a stunning save from Bernardo Silva's volley.

Haaland also headed at the goalkeeper in stoppage time as the Norwegian was held scoreless for the first time in the Premier League this season.

City could still have suffered their first defeat of the season had Sean Longstaff not pulled a great chance wide in the final 10 minutes.

But the dropped points offer more encouragement to City's title rivals that their grip on the title is beginning to loosen.

Premier League: Man City feel Rodri absence as Newcastle hold champions for a draw

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed Son Heung-min is fighting to prove his fitness for Sunday's clash with Manchester United.

Son limped off with a hamstring injury in the 71st minute of Thursday's 3-0 win against Qarabag in the Europa League.

Postecoglou was uncertain about the extent of his captain's injury immediately after the Qarabag tie.

But he said on Friday that the South Korea forward wants to train on Saturday to show he is ready to feature in the Premier League showdown at Old Trafford.

"Fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the ones who put in a shift. Apart from Sonny, everybody is okay," Postecoglou told reporters.

"Sonny, I don't think is too bad. He wants to train tomorrow and we will see how it goes and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

If Son is unable to recover in time, Postecoglou has several options on the left wing, including Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski.

Germany's Timo Werner replaced Son on Thursday, while 17-year-old attacker Mikey Moore could be handed a full debut.

"Timo and Mikey can certainly come into the frame. We have Kulusevski who can play wide as well so we've got some options there, but firstly we'll see how Sonny is," Postecoglou said.

Son's long-term future in north London was thrown into the spotlight earlier this week after he said no talks over a new contract had taken place with the Tottenham hierarchy.

Son's current deal expires next year but Tottenham hold the option to extend his contract by a further year and reportedly plan to activate that clause.

Postecoglou made it clear he wants the 32-year-old to stay, with Son into his 10th season at the club he joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

"I don't always have the final say but certainly I like to think my input is significant on it," he said.

"I think it is part of a broader discussion around Sonny but the way he is performing and leading the club at the moment, I certainly want him to stick around for a while."

Premier League: Spurs skipper Son in race to recover from injury for Man Utd clash

Alisson Becker is ready to return from injury for Liverpool's trip to Premier League strugglers Wolves, manager Arne Slot said on Friday.

The first-choice goalkeeper has missed the past two games, with Caoimhin Kelleher deputising, but Slot said the Brazilian was in line to play on Saturday.

"He trained yesterday a part of our session with the group, so we're expecting him to do the whole session today," Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

"So we think he is available but of course we have to train today.

"And of course we're really happy with Alisson being back but I want to emphasise the fact that Caoimhin did really well in the two games he was in goal for us, so another example of me having two, and I think even three, good options in certain positions."

Liverpool are second in the Premier League, just one point behind champions Manchester City, with four wins from their first five matches.

Slot, in the early days of his reign after replacing Jurgen Klopp, said it had been a "good start, but not a perfect one".

"I think it's been a positive start, with the small disappointment of losing at home against Nottingham Forest," he said.

"Every home game you lose is a disappointment, especially if it's not against a team that's competing for a top-four position, although you never know what Nottingham Forest are going to do this season."

The Dutchman added: "The style we play, the way we play, it's still very close to what you guys were used to for nine years, which is quite normal because we almost have all the same players Jurgen had.

"Keeping the results going is a good thing. Again, I have to mention that the fixture list has been good to us."

Premier League: Alisson ready to return for Liverpool, says coach Arne Slot

Son Heung-min said Tottenham team-mate Rodrigo Bentancur "almost cried" when he apologised over an alleged racist remark about the South Korean.

Bentancur was charged by the Football Association earlier this month with an alleged misconduct breach in relation to a media interview on Uruguayan TV.

The former Juventus midfielder had been asked in June by the host of the Canal 10 show for a Spurs player's shirt, to which he replied: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same."

Bentancur apologised to Tottenham captain Son, who said his team-mate had "made a mistake".

But because the wording of the charge refers to an "aggravated breach", he could reportedly be banned for six to 12 domestic matches.

Son, speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League home tie against Qarabag, said he could not say much at the moment because of the "FA process".

"But I love Rodrigo, I love him. We've a lot of good memories, we started playing together when he joined (in January 2022)," he said.

"He knew. He apologised straight afterwards when we had holiday. I was at home. I didn't even realise what was going on. He sent me a long message and you could feel it was coming from his heart.

"When we came back for pre-season, he felt really sorry and he almost cried when he apologised publicly and personally as well. He felt like he was really sorry. We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it."

Son is one of only two players, along with Ben Davies, left at Tottenham from the squad that reached the Champions League final in 2019.

It could be Sonny's cousin too as they all look the same." Bentancur apologised to Tottenham captain Son, who said his team-mate had "made a mistake". We are all human and all make mistakes and we learn from it." Premier League: Son says Spurs team-mate Bentancur 'almost cried' over alleged racial slur

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists he has moved on from the Erling Haaland row as his side prepares for the League Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday (Sep 25). Arsenal, who&nbsp;almost won at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League were denied three points after John Stones scored a stoppage-time equaliser. After the goal, Haaland was deemed to have thrown a ball at Gabriel Jesus while there were also words exchanged between the Norwegian and Arteta.

<h2>Arteta moves on from Haaland row</h2>

"We have already moved on and we are now ready to battle again tomorrow," Arteta said while addressing the pre-match press conference ahead of the Bolton clash.

"The team, the desire that they have to compete in any context, to win, to adapt to different circumstances, different competitions, different ways of playing and handle that emotionally and physically, the way we've done it is superb."

The game at the Etihad Stadium saw both sides give their best with Arsenal taking the lead after Haaland had scored the opening goal. However, the referee was in the spotlight for two decisions that influenced the match. Arsenal pushed for an attack while the City skipper was out of position and speaking to referee Michael Oliver. On the other hand, Leandro Trossard was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away while he was already on a yellow card.

After City’s equaliser tempers flared as Haaland first threw the ball at Jesus which was not inspected by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) while the Norwegian attempted to shoulder push Thomas Partey after Arsenal restarted the match. He was not done there as he also exchanged words with Arteta after the match was over.

The 2-2 draw between Man City and Arsenal also meant both sides are unbeaten at the start of the Premier League season. Both are expected to give a tough fight for the Premier League title having been on the rise for the last two seasons.

Blow to Manchester City as Rodri ruled out for rest of the season with ACL tear

Manchester City star forward Erling Haaland will not face any disciplinary action for his involvement in several heated exchanges during his side’s home game against Arsenal on Sunday (September 22) in the Premier League.&nbsp;

One of the incidents included him taking a jibe at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta following the 2-2 draw at Etihad, asking him to ‘stay humble’, with Gunners’ attacker Gabriel Jesus confronting him right away, leading to an ugly confrontation.

At a time when Arsenal looked to break the deadlock by beating City at their home under Arteta, substitute defender John Stones hit one late in the injury time (90+8th minute) to salvage the draw.&nbsp;

After collecting the ball, Haaland smashed it onto Gabriel Magalhaes in the back of his head before joining his teammates in jubilation.

Soon after the referee blew the final whistle, Haaland crossed the line in taunting Arsenal manager Arteta, asking him to ‘Stay Humble’, twice. Jesus intervened immediately, with both taking jibes at each other.&nbsp;

Upbeat about his team’s performance and how things unfolded during the playing time, Haaland told Jesus to get away, “What are you talking about, get the f**king way, you f**king clown.”

‘Stay Humble’ – Man City's Erling Haaland to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after Premier League classic

John Stones' 98th-minute equaliser salvaged a 2-2 draw for Manchester City against 10-man Arsenal in a bad-tempered clash between the two favourites for the Premier League title on Sunday.

Arsenal played the entire second half a man down after Leandro Trossard was sent off but was seconds away from inflicting City's first home defeat since November 2022.

A draw is enough for City to retake top spot, two points clear of Arsenal in fourth.

Erling Haaland's 100th City goal had given Pep Guardiola's men the perfect start.

Arsenal turned the game around thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's wonder strike and another set-piece header from Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Gunners lost Trossard for a second booking just before half-time. However, Mikel Arteta's men produced a stunning rearguard action to hold out until the final seconds when Stones bundled in after Arsenal failed to clear a corner. The powder keg for an explosive encounter was lit within the first few seconds when Kai Havertz charged into Rodri to leave the Spaniard needing treatment.

Guardiola said City had been handed an advantage by having an extra day's rest and not travelling for their Champions League draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Arsenal, by contrast, were in Italy on Thursday for their 0-0 stalemate against Atalanta.

City burst out of the traps to try and make their fresher legs count and got an early reward.

Haaland had not even managed a single shot on target in the two league meetings between the sides last season as Arsenal kept two clean sheets against the champions. But the Norwegian is in unstoppable form and took just nine minutes to score his 10th goal of the season and bring up his century in 105 games for City.

Savinho's through ball split the Arsenal defence and Haaland coolly prodded past the onrushing David Raya.

Ilkay Gundogan then curled a free-kick off the post. But City's momentum was interrupted when Rodri was forced off in some distress with a knee injury.

Just seconds after he was replaced by Mateo Kovacic, Arsenal levelled in stunning fashion.

Calafiori was picked out by Gabriel Martinelli at the edge of the box and the Italian defender curled a brilliant effort beyond Ederson for his first Gunners goal. Gabriel scored the winner in Arsenal's 1-0 win at Tottenham in the north London derby last weekend.

And City were also unable to cope with the Brazilian's power at set-pieces. Guardiola's men got away with a warning when Gabriel headed over his first big opportunity from a Bukayo Saka corner.

The Arsenal centre-back was not so forgiving with his second chance as he shrugged off Kyle Walker to nod in another inviting delivery from Saka. Yet there was another huge momentum swing just before half-time when Trossard saw red. The Belgian was shown a second yellow for kicking the ball away after committing a foul.

Arsenal dropped two points in a 1-1 draw with Brighton after Declan Rice did likewise just three weeks ago and they suffered a similar fate in heartbreaking fashion. Arteta responded by introducing an extra defender in Ben White for Saka as the visitors set up camp in their own box to repel wave upon wave of City attack.

Raya was called upon to save a powerful downward header by Haaland. But Arsenal largely restricted City to potshots from a distance by their centre-backs as Raya denied twice denied Josko Gvardiol.

It was another City defender who finally got what could be a defining goal in the title race come May. Stones swept home the loose ball from Jack Grealish's cross to extend City's near two-year invincible streak on home soil.

PL: John Stones scores late in injury time to save Manchester City's day against Arsenal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels critics of the Premier League champions want the club wiped "from the face of the Earth" over their alleged breaches of financial rules. City, who have dominated English football since Guardiola's arrival in 2016, face a hefty points deduction or even expulsion from the league if found guilty on some or all of the 115 charges relating to financial regulations.

A long-awaited hearing into charges brought by the Premier League in February 2023 finally began at the start of the week.

Guardiola has claimed previously that some of the club's rivals hope to see them found guilty and he appears in no doubt they would expect punishment to be severe.

He brought up the matter unprompted ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium while talking about the tendency of people to overly criticise isolated bad performances.

"During a season, you can say, 'Oh, it was a bad season'," said Guardiola. "But for performances, some people say, 'Oh, it's a disgrace, it is a disaster, it's unacceptable'. No, during 90 minutes it's one bad afternoon when they were better.

"But I would say - I'm sorry, I want to defend my club, especially in these modern days when everyone is expecting us not to be relegated, to be disappeared off the face of the Earth, the world - that we have better afternoons than the opponents. That's why we win a lot."

City faces 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The club is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

However, City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Pep says critics want Manchester City ‘wiped from earth’s face’ over PL champions facing alleged FFP breach

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League with a resounding 3-0 win over Bournemouth as Tottenham eased the pressure on Ange Postecoglou by beating Brentford 3-1 on Saturday.

Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 win at West Ham, while Aston Villa are level on points at the top after coming from behind to beat Wolves 3-1.

Liverpool suffered the first setback of Arne Slot's early days in charge when Nottingham Forest shocked Anfield seven days ago.

But the Reds responded in style to blow Bournemouth away before half-time.

Luis Diaz was rested for an impressive 3-1 win at AC Milan to start Liverpool's Champions League campaign in midweek.

Restored to the starting line-up, the Colombian struck twice inside two minutes.

Diaz pounced on a misjudgement from Kepa Arrizabalaga to latch onto Ibrahima Konate's long ball and round the stranded Spanish goalkeeper before sweeping into an empty net.

Trent Alexander-Arnold then teed up Diaz to fire in his fifth goal of the season.

Darwin Nunez was making his first start of the season and ended his 14-game goal drought at club level in spectacular fashion by curling into the far corner.

A three-goal margin of victory takes Liverpool ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa, who also have 12 points, on goal difference.

<h2>Solanke off the mark</h2>

Spurs had won just one of their opening four league games to continue a downward trend in form spilling over from the end of last season.

Postecoglou's men also had a narrow escape with two late goals to avoid a League Cup exit to second-tier Coventry in midweek and got off to a nightmare start against Brentford.

Bryan Mbeumo's thumping volley after just 22 seconds put the Bees in front.

Yet, Spurs got the quick response they needed to stave off any revolt from the home fans.

Dominic Solanke opened his Tottenham account with a tap in after Mark Flekken parried James Maddison's effort.

Solanke off the mark Spurs had won just one of their opening four league games to continue a downward trend in form spilling over from the end of last season. Brennan Johnson then hit back at his critics with an accurate low finish. Maddison secured the points five minutes from time with his first goal since March. Villa also needed a turnaround for their fourth win in five games after Matheus Cunha blasted Wolves in front midway through the first half. Premier League: Luis Diaz fires Liverpool top, Spurs bounce back against Brentford

Nicolas Jackson fired Chelsea to a 3-0 win against West Ham as the Senegal striker repaid his manager's faith with a decisive double at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Jackson struck twice in the first half before Cole Palmer wrapped up Chelsea's third win in five Premier League games under new boss Enzo Maresca.

It was a well-timed brace from Jackson, who was Chelsea's first-choice striker by Maresca on Friday, despite Christopher Nkunku's match-winning impact against Bournemouth last weekend.

Although Jackson signed a contract extension earlier in September that will keep the Senegal star at Stamford Bridge until 2033, there were calls for Nkunku to start after the French forward came off the bench to net in the 1-0 win at Bournemouth.

Jackson scored 17 goals in an inconsistent debut season with the Blues and was guilty of missing a number of big chances.

But the 23-year-old has been in fine form at the start of this season and already has four goals in six games in all competitions.

Chelsea have won all three away league games this season, losing only once, against champions Manchester City, in their five top-flight matches.

Despite a reported power struggle between Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali behind the scenes, former Leicester boss Maresca, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the close season, has made a strong first impression.

After disappointing sixth and 12th-place finishes in the last two seasons, there are encouraging signs that the Italian could be the manager to turn Chelsea's expensively assembled squad of underachievers into top-four contenders.

The Hammers' dismal start to the season has already put new boss Julen Lopetegui under pressure, with the former Spain and Real Madrid boss jeered by the few frustrated fans who hadn't fled the ground well before the final whistle.

West Ham have won just one of their five Premier League games this term, losing three in a row at home to start a league campaign for the first time.

<h2>Rampant Chelsea</h2>

Chelsea made a flying start after just four minutes when West Ham switched off at a free-kick, allowed Jackson to take Jadon Sancho's pass and surge down the right flank.

Jackson cut into the penalty area and beat Alphonse Areola's weak attempted save with ease.

It was Chelsea's earliest goal in a Premier League London derby since Daniel Sturridge netted against QPR in 2012.

Jackson was proving impossible for West Ham to subdue and he teed up Cole Palmer for a low strike that flashed just wide.

Chelsea's pressure was relentless and there was a sense of inevitability about their second goal in the 18th minute.

At the climax of a free-flowing move, Moises Caicedo produced a deft pass that pierced the West Ham defence, allowing Jackson to guide a composed finished past Areola.

Jarrod Bowen summed up West Ham's sluggish start with a woeful shot that ballooned over from a good position.

Making his first league start for West Ham after his close-season move from Leeds, Crysencio Summerville demanded a penalty after Wesley Fofana's tug sent him sprawling, but VAR rejected the forward's appeals.

Lopetegui was furious with West Ham's lethargy and responded by hauling off Argentina midfielder Guido Rodríguez before half-time.

But Rodriguez's replacement Thomas Soucek hardy improved Lopetegui's mood when he wastefully fired straight at Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez.

Sancho looked revitalised following his loan from Manchester United, causing problems with his nimble dribbling in his first Premier League start since May 2023.

Palmer killed off West Ham in the 47th minute as the England forward took Jackson's pass and slotted past Areola from a tight angle.

Nicolas Jackson hits brace as Chelsea win against woeful West Ham in Premier League

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has defended record signing Dominic Solanke as the striker searches for his first goal for the club, confirming they also considered a move for Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window.

Spurs signed Solanke from Bournemouth last month in a deal worth up to £65 million ($86 million) but his start has been disrupted by an ankle injury sustained in his debut at Leicester.

Toney was the other high-profile England forward on the market but he eventually left Brentford to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, meaning Spurs will not face him on Saturday when the Bees make the trip across London.

Solanke, 27, has played three matches for Tottenham but has yet to find the net. Last season he scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth.

Postecoglou told his pre-match press conference on Friday that Tottenham had considered a move for Toney, who featured for England at Euro 2024 in Germany.

"We did look at him (Toney) but, I have said, Dom was the one I wanted and it took pretty much the whole summer to get him in because he was the one who fitted the profile of what we were looking for at the time," said Postecoglou.

"People are just so quick to judge, mate. It's a small sample.

"If he has gone 15 games without a goal then I can answer that question or 15 games where he hasn't contributed, but I just think take a breath. Do a bit of yoga. Think about the world for a second and make an assessment after that."

Postecoglou, whose team have won just one of their opening four Premier League fixtures, said Solanke, who will start against mid-table Brentford, had fitted in well at the club.

"I haven't sensed (anxiety)," he said of the former Liverpool player, who has one cap for England.

"I don't sense that. In his mind, I think he just wants to be in a good physical condition so he can contribute. That is where he is at and the space we want him in.

"Hopefully, he gets a bit of confidence out of the game time he got during the week and builds on that tomorrow. I'm sure as the season goes on he will be a real strong contributor for us."

Premier League: Ange Postecoglou defends Dominic Solanke after slow start to Spurs career

Arsenal wrap up a gruelling week on the road with a third straight-away game when they face champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and manager Mikel Arteta said his squad had been preparing for the clash since pre-season.

After beating Tottenham Hotspur away in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal flew to Bergamo and got a goalless draw at Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday. They have little time to rest, however, with City next up at the weekend.

Pep Guardiola's side have edged Arsenal to win the title in the last two seasons and once again the two clubs are first and second in the league after four games, with City two points clear at the top.

"We've been preparing for this since pre-season. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it's extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days," Arteta said. "But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally and tactically.

"We're making sure that everyone is ready for it because we're going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break."

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder's return date.

"We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he'll be out for," the Spaniard said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

"We wanted the same as them, we're not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game," he said.

Although City have had Arsenal's number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta's side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at The Etihad Stadium.

"We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances," he said.

"This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we've made another step and we can compete."

Premier League champions Manchester City arrive in India for Champions 4-in-a-row trophy tour

Christian Eriksen will wait to settle his Manchester United future after speculation that the Denmark midfielder could leave Old Trafford.

Eriksen was one of Erik ten Hag's first signings as United manager in 2022, but the 32-year-old had a diminished role last season.

The former Tottenham star, who suffered a cardiac arrest at the 2021 European Championship, was linked with a move to his old team Ajax, as well as Belgian side Anderlecht, during a close-season of transfer rumours.

But Eriksen remained with United after the transfer deadline passed and has made a positive impact since returning to the starting line-up.

He made his first start of the season in Saturday's 3-0 win at Southampton, which he followed up with a brace in the 7-0 rout of Barnsley in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.

"I feel very good being at United," Eriksen said. "If they told me to leave I would leave but I didn't hear that.

"I'm also a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play, that's always going to be my aim."

Asked about his long-term future with his contract expiring next year, he said: "There's one year left so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out and see what happens afterwards."

United have scored 10 without reply since Eriksen came into the starting line-up.

But he baulked at suggestions he could have spoken to Ten Hag about his role and minutes given the increased competition in United's midfield.

"It's difficult to ask the manager in the off-season how many minutes I'm going to get in a season," Eriksen said.

"If he starts promising minutes to players we're going to have a long season!

"There was no speaking in that sense, just head down, work hard and focus on each game."

"I'm also a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play, that's always going to be my aim." Asked about his long-term future with his contract expiring next year, he said: "There's one year left so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out and see what happens afterwards." United have scored 10 without reply since Eriksen came into the starting line-up. "There was no speaking in that sense, just head down, work hard and focus on each game." Premier League: Christian Eriksen to wait before settling future with Manchester United

Arsenal players are unfazed by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland's goal-scoring rampage, midfielder Jorginho said vouching for the Gunners' confidence ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with City. City have had a perfect campaign in the league so far, while Arsenal secured three wins and a draw. Fresh off nine goals in four league games, including two hat-tricks, Haaland has scored 99 goals from 103 appearances for City across all competitions. The Norwegian aims for his century in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan, while Arsenal begin their European campaign at Atalanta on Thursday and prepare to meet City at the Etihad on Sunday.

“Erling scoring again... it is starting to make us laugh,” the 32-year-old Italian said. “We look because we watch all the games and we love the Premier League." "We watch (City) as well, which is normal. It doesn’t get to our head. We need to focus on us and that is what we are trying to do."

Jorginho praised Arsenal’s mentality, saying it has improved since last season, pointing to their gritty 1-0 win over Tottenham HotSpur despite missing key players like captain Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Premier League 2024/25: Arsenal players not flustered by Erling Haaland's relentless form, says Jorginho

Manchester City will fight to avoid potential expulsion from the Premier League for financial breaches as sport's "trial of the century" begins on Monday.

Premier League champions City have been charged with 115 alleged breaches of the competition's financial regulations.

City deny any wrongdoing and have said they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to clear their name.

But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even be kicked out of the Premier League.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both hit by points deductions last season for single breaches of the league's profit and sustainability rules.

With City winning eight league titles since 2012, including six of the last seven, a guilty verdict could prompt a slew of compensation claims from rival top-flight clubs.

City's financial affairs have come under regular scrutiny since their takeover by Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

If the verdict goes against City, there is potential for strained diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, where Mansour is a deputy prime minister.

The hearing, which is not a court case, will be heard by an independent commission and could take 10 weeks to complete.

City's legal team were photographed arriving at London's International Dispute Resolution Centre for the start of the hearing on Monday.

David Pannick from Blackstone Chambers, who is City's lead barrister, was seen on his way into the venue close to St Paul's Cathedral in central London.

A verdict is not expected to be announced until 2025, with City likely to appeal if they are found guilty.

Of the 115 charges, 80 are for breaches of the regulations between 2009 and 2018, while a further 35 relate to failing to cooperate with the Premier League's investigation.

The root of suspicion comes from leaked documents published by German outlet Der Spiegel back in 2018.

Emails purportedly sent between City executives showed the club had allegedly inflated sponsorship revenue from Abu Dhabi state-controlled airline Etihad and telecoms firm Etisalat by disguising direct investment from the Abu Dhabi United Group as income.

Other documents claimed to show off-the-books payments to then manager Roberto Mancini via consultancy fees from a club in Abu Dhabi.

<h2>'Irrefutable evidence'</h2>

City have already defended their position in one case after overturning a two-year ban from the Champions League by UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2020.

CAS found most of the alleged breaches of overstating sponsorship revenue were either not established or "time-barred" because they fell outside the five-year statutory limit for prosecution.

No so such time limitation clause exists in the Premier League case, although City remain confident of avoiding sanctions.

"I know what people are looking for, I know what they are expecting. I know it because I have read it for many years but I've said everyone is innocent until guilt is proven. So we will see," City manager Pep Guardiola said last week.

Aymeric Laporte was a serial title winner with City before moving to Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr and the defender claimed Guardiola's players were reassured there was nothing to worry about during his time at the club.

"When I was there and the news broke, the sporting director (Txiki Begiristain) and the CEO (Ferran Soriano) came and told all the players and staff that we can all be very calm because not one rule has been broken by Man City," Laporte told Mail Sport.

However, a guilty verdict could bring an end to Guardiola's glorious reign, which includes winning City's first Champions League crown in 2023.

The Spaniard, who is into the final year of his contract, has steadfastly backed City's owners but previously said he would walk if they had not been honest with him.

"If you lie to me, the day after I am not here," said Guardiola in 2022.

Severe sanctions would raise doubts over the future of City's cast of star players, including prolific striker Erling Haaland.

Should City prove their innocence, the Premier League will stand accused of being a soft touch outmanoeuvered by the deep pockets of state-backed clubs.

Premier League: Champions Manchester City fight against expulsion as trial begins for financial breaches

Mikel Arteta saluted Arsenal's hunger as the gritty Gunners ignored the absence of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard to clinch an "ugly" 1-0 win at bitter rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Arteta's side were without skipper Odegaard due to an ankle injury suffered on Norway duty, while fellow midfielder Rice served a suspension for his red card against Brighton. But the Premier League title contenders dug deep with a combative display, benefitting from Tottenham's latest display of wasteful finishing before Gabriel Magalhaes bagged the winner in the second half.

The Brazilian defender's first goal since February made it three wins from four league games for unbeaten Arsenal as they chase a first title since 2004 after two successive runners-up finishes.

"Super happy obviously. We know what it means for our club and our people to win a north London derby," Arteta said. "We had moments in the game where we had to suffer. We had to adapt a little bit because of some of the players we lost.

"I prepared for Tottenham for five days, then in one moment I lost one player and in another I lost another. I didn't sleep much!

"There were no excuses, no crying. The players have thick skin. They love the game. Sometimes to win you have to do the ugly things and they love to do that.

"I loved it, because day after day the players are hungrier and hungrier."

Arsenal have now won on their last three visits to Tottenham, losing just once, in May 2022, in their last eight meetings with their hated neighbours.

The second-placed Gunners are two points behind Manchester City as they turn their attention to their Champions League opener at Atalanta on Thursday before travelling to face Pep Guardiola's champions next weekend.

Arteta believes Arsenal's latest success behind enemy lines with stand them in good stead for a daunting week.

"We won three years in a row here. That is a big thing in the history of the club," he said. "It is a tough week coming up. The players believe already. We have a won a lot of big games, but this will give us a lot of energy and belief."

Mikel Arteta lauds Arsenal in ‘ugly’ win over rivals Spurs in Premier League

Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool to hit back after their "unacceptable" defeat against Nottingham Forest as the Reds prepare to start their Champions League campaign. Just days after their shock 1-0 loss to Forest in the Premier League, Arne Slot's side begin the new Champions League format with a trip to AC Milan on Tuesday. After winning the first three games of the Slot era, Liverpool were brought down to earth with a bump by Forest at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk wants the defeat to serve as fuel to beat Milan and quickly get their campaign back on track. "We have a very good group that really understand that it was unacceptable and are disappointed," the Dutch centre-back said. "We all know everyone can do better and we have to show that on Tuesday and that is what we focus on."

"We have been through losses and difficult moments together and I think we have to stay calm and we will stay calm. "Hopefully, if there are no injuries happening, then rhythm is always a good thing. "We need the whole squad and we know after the international break it will be a game every three days so we need everyone in their best shape and best form."

Liverpool had looked impressive in their wins against Ipswich, Brentford and Manchester United. They managed to avoid conceding a goal in any of those games, before Forest forward Callum Hudson-Odoi finally breached Van Dijk's defence at the weekend.

Asked what they had to do to prevent the defeat impacting their early-season momentum, Van Dijk said: "Keep going and keep working and make sure the performances don't go in that direction.

"We all know how the atmosphere can change but that is also part of the influence from outside which could affect you. "I can't wait to be out there hearing the Champions League tune and leading out the boys. "A club like Liverpool needs to be in the Champions League and we are finally back, so let's go out there and put in a much better performance as it is needed; otherwise, you are going to have an issue."

Premier League: Virgil Van Dijk urges Liverpool to hit back after 'unacceptable' Nottingham Forest loss

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot suffered his first setback as his side surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday but Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the season.

Forest had not tasted victory at Anfield since 1969 but Callum Hudson-Odoi's 72nd minute curler beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson secured the three points as Nuno Espirito Santo's side moved into the Premier League's top five.

Erling Haaland, whose place in Manchester City's side was in doubt after being granted compassionate leave this week, continued his incredible start to the season with two goals as City recovered from conceding after 22 seconds to win 2-1.

Reigning champions City are top with a maximum 12 points from four games, with Liverpool on nine along with third-placed Aston Villa who hit back from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2 thanks to a stunning Jhon Duran winner.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who drew 0-0 at home to promoted Ipswich Town, are on eight points along with Forest.

Manchester United's new signing Matthijs de Ligt grabbed his first goal of the season and Marcus Rashford scored for the first time since March as Erik Ten Hag's side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Southampton who are yet to earn a point.

Liverpool's transition from the Juergen Klopp era had appeared seamless as they began the season with three league victories, but they stumbled badly against Forest.

"The result frustrates the most, and we cannot be happy about how the game went. It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances," lamented Dutchman Slot. "We only have to look at ourselves - we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball."

For Forest, their start offers optimism that they can finally begin to look upwards in the table after two seasons fighting against relegation.

They produced a tactically astute display to frustrate Liverpool and then sent their visiting fans wild as Anthony Elanga found his fellow substitute Hudson-Odoi with a brilliant cross-field pass, and the 23-year-old winger cut inside before bending a tremendous effort past Alisson.

"We are working hard, and it is about building and believing in this idea that you can develop," Espirito Santo said.

<h2>Goal Machine</h2>

Man City, whose 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules will start to be heard by an independent tribunal next week -- charges the club denies - were stunned as Brentford opened the scoring in the first minute at The Etihad.

Yoane Wissa gave the London side the lead but Norwegian goal machine Haaland struck twice before halftime.

He restored parity in the 20th minute when he scored from a tight angle with his second touch of the game and then muscle through from an Ederson clearance to chip what turned out to be the winning goal.

Haaland was denied a third that would have made him the first player since 1946 to score three successive hat-tricks in the English top flight. He has nine goals in four games -- more than any other English top-flight team has managed this season.

City's neighbours United had lost two of their opening three games to once again put the pressure on manager Ten Hag, but they were convincing winners against Southampton on the south coast as they moved to six points.

Things might have been different though had Saints' Cameron Archer not had a first-half penalty saved by Andre Onana when the score was still 0-0.

"Once Andre stopped the penalty, straight after, we scored a goal with Matthijs de Ligt, the game was all ours and we dominate the game from that point," Ten Hag said.

Leicester City were denied a first win of the season as Jean-Philippe Mateta's stoppage-time penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi had put the Foxes 2-0 ahead but Mateta threw the home side a lifeline and then coolly slotted home a penalty at the death.

West Ham United also needed a stoppage-time goal to grab a 1-1 draw at London rivals Fulham -- Danny Ings striking in the 95th minute after Raul Jimenez had given the hosts the lead.

Premier League: Arne Slot gets reality check with Nottingham Forest loss, Haaland doubles powers City to top

Manchester United gave manager Erik ten Hag some breathing space with a 3-0 win at Southampton on Saturday thanks to goals from Matthijs de Ligt, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

However, United had to ride out an early Southampton storm and the outcome could have been vastly different had Andre Onana not saved Cameron Archer's penalty at 0-0.

De Ligt's first United goal and Rashford's first for six months quickly flipped momentum in the visitors' favour just before half-time.

Southampton's woes were compounded when captain Jack Stephens was sent off 11 minutes from time for a wild challenge on Garnacho, who rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

"Sometimes you have to find a way to win," said Ten Hag. "The first minutes we had some problems but after Andre stopped the penalty and the goal by De Ligt I think the game was all ours."

Saints remain without a point from four games on their return to the Premier League, while United's second win of the season lifts them up to eighth.

Ten Hag began the campaign already under scrutiny after surviving an internal review of his position in May following an eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Back-to-back defeats before the international break to Brighton and Liverpool had ramped up the pressure even more on the Dutchman and the Red Devils had to ride their luck early on at St&nbsp;Mary's.

A failure to make the most of some promising build-up play has been the story of Southampton's their return to the top flight.

Teenager Tyler Dibling caught the eye on his first Premier League start and his trickery lured Diogo Dalot into a rash challenge inside the area.

But Archer's spot-kick lacked conviction and Onana parried his attempt before easily clutching the striker's follow-up header at the second attempt.

<h2>'Huge for him'</h2>

Just two minutes later, United led as De Ligt put a difficult week with the Dutch national team behind him to open his account.

The former Bayern Munich centre-back was subbed off at half-time by Ronald Koeman after errors that led to two German goals in a 2-2 Nations League draw in Amsterdam.

A short corner caught Southampton napping and Bruno Fernandes' cross perfectly picked out De Ligt to head into the bottom corner.

"Three points from the games is not enough so there was some pressure on this game but we played really well," said De Ligt.

"Big credit to Andre who saved a really important penalty and changed the game for us."

Rashford then ended his wait since March to get on the scoresheet when his low strike from outside the box curled into the far corner on 41 minutes.

"It is so huge for him," added Ten Hag. "For every striker to be on the scoring list is important. Now he has his first, I'm sure there will be more."

Aaron Ramsdale denied De Ligt a second before half-time as United threatened to run riot.

But the second period was far more sedate as the visitors comfortably held Southampton at bay before the home side's frustration bubbled over.

Stephens' unnecessary lunge caught Garnacho on the knee and was rightly punished with a straight red card.

The Argentine then rubbed salt in Southampton's wounds with a thumping finish from Dalot's cross in the 96th minute.

Premier League: Manchester United beat 10-man Southampton for second win in four games

Enzo Maresca insists he will not be distracted by reports of a rift between Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Boehly and Eghbali were the leading figures in the 2022 purchase of Chelsea from former owner Roman Abramovich.

But the pair are reported to have clashed over a host of issues revolving around the running of the Premier League club.

After Boehly's brief stint as the club's sporting director during the first six months of the new regime in west London, Eghbali has become the most hands-on figure within the ownership group.

Their relationship is said to have deteriorated in recent months, with differing opinions over the club's recruitment policy, poor results and the failure to make progress on the building of a new stadium.

One of the key disagreements came over the position of now-departed manager Mauricio Pochettino, who was replaced by former Leicester boss Maresca in the close-season.

Boehly is believed to have backed Pochettino, now in charge of the USA men's team.

However, Eghbali and the club's co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart were reported to have favoured a fresh approach.

With no sign of a solution, it is believed Boehly and Eghbali want to buy out each others' shares to seize sole control at Stamford Bridge.

Eghbali's Clearlake is the majority share owner with a 61.5 per cent stake and Boehly holds a minority 12.8 per cent ownership.

But amid the problems in the corridors of power, Maresca said on Friday he is focused on his players as the Blues look to bounce back from their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

"If I spend my energy on something different then it's not worth it, my focus is on tomorrow's game to be honest," Maresca said ahead of the clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.

"In the last week I've done the same thing, focus on the game and how to prepare in the best way.

"The other things are things I cannot control. I spoke with Todd when we played City and Behdad just days ago; I'm speaking with both, there's no problems at all. I'm focused on the pitch.

"The players are professional to understand that these things are things we can't control so the focus is the pitch, the way we need to improve.

"I don't know if something will happen, I have no idea."

Premier League: Enzo Maresca won't lose focus amid reports of Chelsea hierarchy rift

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta refused to rule captain Martin Odegaard out of Sunday's north London derby at Tottenham despite fears the key midfielder could be sidelined for weeks.

Odegaard suffered an ankle sprain on international duty with Norway earlier this week that looked set to also rule him out of tough away trips to Atalanta in the Champions League and a Premier League visit to Manchester City on September 22.

However, Arteta, who signed a new three-year deal on Thursday, said further tests were needed to discover the extent of the injury.

"We need some more tests," said the Spaniard at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"Let’s see the extent of the injury and how quickly we can get him back. Martin wants to be here every day but we have to wait and see. I leave that to the doctor. He’s willing and he wants to be present in every game. We need to make sure we know first how good he is or not.

"Players with 48 hours are always available. Let’s see what happens."

Arsenal are already depleted in midfield for the north London derby due to Declan Rice's suspension for a harsh red card in a 1-1 draw with Brighton before the international break.

New signing Mikel Merino is also currently sidelined after breaking a bone in his shoulder.

However, Arteta could unleash another fresh face in Raheem Sterling, who joined in the final hours of the transfer window on loan from Chelsea.

The former England international had been outcast by Blues boss Enzo Maresca due to Chelsea's bloated squad.

Sterling previously worked with Arteta during their time together at Manchester City and the Gunners boss believes the winger is fired up to silence his critics.

"He looks great. First of all because he has a big smile on his face, a lot of energy. He's at it and he wants to prove a point," added Arteta. "When someone has got that in his belly you sense it straight away. Obviously, I don't need to discover anything about his quality and what he can bring to the team."

Gabriel Jesus has returned to training in a timely fitness boost for Arteta, but Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt after picking up a calf injury on international duty.
