Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is pleased that the club's long-awaited hearing into 115 charges brought by the Premier League is set to start on Monday.

City face 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The English champions stand accused of failing to provide accurate financial information between 2009 and 2018, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing and Guardiola has backed his superiors when pressed about the charges in the past.

"Start soon, and hopefully finish soon," Guardiola said of the hearing at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Brentford's trip to the Etihad. "I am looking forward to the decision.

"I'm happy it's starting on Monday. I know there will be more rumours, new specialists about the sentences.

"We're going to see. I know what people are looking forward to, what they expect. I know what I read for many, many years. Everybody is innocent until guilt is proven. So we'll see."

If found guilty on some or all of the charges, City face a severe points deduction and possibly even expulsion from the Premier League.

The hearing is set to last at least two months, with a decision not expected until 2025.

The Premier League brought the charges in February 2023 but there has been a lengthy wait for the case to proceed before an independent commission.

In the meantime, City have lifted two more Premier League titles and the club's first-ever Champions League last year.

Since a 2008 takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of the United Arab Emirates royal family, City have been transformed into the dominant force in English football.

They have won eight of the last 13 Premier League titles, including a record four consecutive league crowns in the past four seasons.

Pep Guardiola ‘happy’ that Manchester City’s hearing into 115 charges to begin on Monday

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag&nbsp;reacted to the criticism levied on him by former Red Devils' forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain, who recently surpassed 900 career goals during the international break, slammed Ten Hag for being too negative for a club of United's stature. Ronaldo was pointing out at the United manager's recent remark where he admitted that the club is 'long way away' from winning the Premier League.

Now, Ten Hag&nbsp;reacted to Ronaldo's comments and stated that he is entitled to his opinion. At a press conference, on Thursday (Sep 12), the United manager said, "He (CR7) said that Manchester United can't win the Premier League." He reiterated, "No, he said this if you read the article very well. So, he's far away in Saudi, far from Manchester. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. It's OK."

He further added, "It doesn't impact me (Ronaldo's remark). I know in the process where we are, what we have to do, where we are going. I have said before we are still in a transition period. We have to integrate a lot of young players also in the team.

"We are still dealing with injuries, we have to bring the injuries back in the team. Before anyone thinks about excuses, no, we have to win every game. I know that, the team knows this and it doesn't matter who is available. We will focus on every game and have in every game the mindset that we have to win."

Under Ten Hag, United lifted the League Cup and FA Cup&nbsp;over the past two seasons.

Ronaldo, in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, slammed Ten Hag and stated, "Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try," he added.

Ronaldo joined United, on Alex Ferguson's insistence, for a second stint in mid-2021, which didn't yield fruitful results. In late 2022, he left the club, to join his current one Al-Nassr in Saudi, after a fallout with Ten Hag. Under the Dutchman, Ronaldo had fallen out of favour and wasn't a regular in the starting XI.

At present, United are at the 14th spot in the 2024/25 Premier League standings, with one win and two thrashings in the new season.

'Doesn't affect me, he is far from Manchester': Erik Ten Hag hits back at criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo says Erik ten Hag's attitude is too negative, urging the Manchester United manager to target the Premier League title even though the club need to "rebuild from the bottom".

The Portugal star, who now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, fell out with Ten Hag before his second spell at Old Trafford ended late in 2022.

Ronaldo believes his former club needs sweeping changes but that Ten Hag should not rule out winning major trophies in the meantime.

The Dutchman has said he is "quite confident" of claiming more silverware this campaign after lifting the League Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

But he said in July his team are a "long way away" from being ready to win the Premier League, which they have not won since Alex Ferguson's final season in charge in 2013.

"Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion," Ronaldo said in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, due to be released on Thursday. "The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try."

United upset Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but they endured their worst Premier League campaign last term, finishing eighth, and the 20-time English champions have lost two of their opening three matches this season.

"This club needs time to rebuild because it's still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change," Ronaldo said. "They understand that. This is the only way. This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything. The owners of the club."

<h2>'Bright future'</h2>

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe completed his purchase of a minority stake in the club in February and has since overseen major changes in the club hierarchy after taking control of football operations.

"I believe that the future will be bright," said Ronaldo. "I believe, but they don't depend only on the talents. It's more than that. It's all club, all, not only players, club, everything as a unit, united.

"They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible."

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who spent six seasons with United earlier in his career, scored 27 goals in 54 appearances during his second spell at Old Trafford after signing from Juventus in 2021.

Following his exit just over a year later, he claimed he felt "betrayed", while saying of Ten Hag: "I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me."

However, the 39-year-old said he still loves the club.

"I'm not happy the way it all happened but, in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it's done, already done," he said. "To prove that I'm right or wrong, this is not my issue any more. I say what I have to say and for me it's done."

He added: "I love that club. I'm not that kind of guy that forgot the past."

Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo bashes Ten Hag for 'negative mindset', urges club for overhaul

The hearing into Manchester City's 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations will begin on Monday, according to ESPN.

City were referred to an independent commission over the alleged breaches, which go back to the 2009-10 campaign, in February 2023. The club allegedly breached rules relating to the provision of accurate financial information.

City are also charged with failing to comply with Premier League rules requiring clubs to follow UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations from the 2013-14 to 2017-18 seasons and failing to follow Premier League rules on profit and sustainability (PSR) from the 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons.

The club, who won an unprecedented fourth successive top-flight title in May, said at the time of the referral to the commission that they were surprised by the league's "issuing of these alleged breaches".

"The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position," City added.

Sources told ESPN the hearing is set to begin on Sept. 16 and is expected to last about two months with a final verdict, including any appeal, to be reached by the end of the season.

City could face penalties such as a points deduction or relegation if found guilty.

Everton and Nottingham Forest had points deducted last season for breaching PSR regulations.

Manchester City were not immediately available to comment, while the Premier League declined to comment.

<h2>New deal ahead of North London derby</h2>

On Sunday, Arsenal are set to face arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for the first time this season. The new deal will come as an added incentive if Arsenal are able to beat their North London rivals on their own turf for the third consecutive season. Arsenal beat Spurs at the back end of last season to stay in the title race while derailing their opponents’ hopes of a top-four finish. They also won in January 2023 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will be looking for another win on enemy territory on Sunday.

Arteta has so far enjoyed his stint as the Gunners' manager helping them win the FA Cup in 2020 while he has been instrumental in the club’s return as a big powerhouse in English and European football. The new deal also means the club will invest in his ideas with an aim to win the Premier League while attempting to go further in the Champions League.

Premier League: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta signs new three-year deal until 2027

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada says struggling manager Erik ten Hag has the full backing of the club despite a poor start to the Premier League season. United finished eighth in the league last season -- their worst since 1990 -- but Ten Hag led his men to an unexpected FA Cup final win against Manchester City.

The Dutchman was handed a one-year contract extension in July, but only after club bosses considered alternatives. Now, Ten Hag is under pressure again, following Sunday's miserable 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, United's second loss from three games this season, which left them 14th in the table.

Speaking alongside new sporting director Dan Ashworth shortly before kick-off against Liverpool, Berrada said it would take more than a couple of bad results to shake the club's belief in their manager. "Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely," he said. "We think Erik is the right coach for us and we're fully backing him."

Ten Hag's contract was extended before either Berrada or Ashworth had taken up their positions but both said they were happy with the decision.

Ashworth said: "I've really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks. "I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can and whether that's operationally, whether that's with recruitment, whether that's with medical, whether that's with psychology, whether that's training ground flow, it's just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United."

Ashworth's first few weeks in the job were dominated by the transfer window, in which United signed Matthijs De Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui. But just as notable were the departures of players including Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho. After a falling-out with Ten Hag early last season, Sancho returned to former club Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.

The pair appeared to have made up as Sancho took part in United's pre-season and played in the Community Shield but on deadline day he joined Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy. Asked what had changed, Ashworth said it had been down to the player's wish to move on.

"We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it, we've got four really good wide players -- Jadon was a fifth -- and it just enabled us to make that decision that if it was good for him and good for us it was something we were willing to consider," he said.

"He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, like Scott wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli, like Aaron (Wan-Bissaka) wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham. We're not in a position where we're kicking players out of the club."

Premier League 2024/25: Erik Ten Hag has Manchester United's full backing, says CEO Omar Berrada

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah has hinted at a potential exit from the club after scoring in the 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday (Sep 1). Salah, in the final year of his Liverpool contract, spoke after the match having scored at Old Trafford for the seventh consecutive season. The 32-year-old stated “It is my last year in the club” and could leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season.

"As you know, it is my last year in the club," in reference to the fact that his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season. He later attempted to clarify the situation,” Salah said while speaking to Sky Sports after the win.

"Coming into the game, I said it could be the last time. No one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I'm just like, okay, I am playing my last season and see what happens at the end of the season.

"It is not up to me, but nobody has talked to me from the club. We will see."

A legend of the game for Liverpool, the Egyptian was instrumental in Liverpool’s success against Manchester United on Sunday having played a key role. He scored in the second half to drop curtains for United with Luis Diaz scoring a brace in the opening half. Salah’s goal was also his 10th at the iconic Old Trafford Stadium cementing his legacy as one of the best visiting players in history.

The win also meant Liverpool continued their winning run to the season having won all three matches so far under new head coach Arne Slot. The Dutchman has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success in the early parts while the same can’t be said for Erik ten Hag. With two defeats in two, pressure is mounting on the Dutchman who survived the sack at the end of last season having won the FA Cup.

Premier League: Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah hints at exit, says 'it is my last year in the club'

Arne Slot passed his first major examination as Liverpool manager with a statement 3-0 win at Manchester United thanks to Luis Diaz's double and a Mohamed Salah strike on Sunday.

Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp but has made a perfect start with a 100 per cent record from three Premier League games to sit alongside Manchester City at the top of the table.

A second consecutive defeat leaves United boss Erik ten Hag already under pressure just three games into the new season.

The Dutchman survived an internal review at the end of last season after overseeing the club's worst ever Premier League finish of eighth.

A shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City saved Ten Hag's job and offered hope for a fresh start, particularly after being backed with a £200 million ($262 million) spend in the transfer market.

But all the hallmarks of United's failings last season were exposed by the impressive visitors.

Casemiro was the fall guy for the home side, as the Brazilian was at fault for both Diaz's goals and hooked off at half-time in favour of youngster Toby Collyer.

United paraded new £42 million signing Manuel Ugarte before kick-off and must now hope the Uruguayan can have a transformational impact to shore up the midfield.

Liverpool, by contrast, did not delve into the market for a defensive midfielder, and Slot's decision to move Ryan Gravenberch into that role has proved an inspired early decision.

Despite Liverpool's ascendency over United during Klopp's reign, the German managed to win only two of his 11 away games against United.

The Reds twice failed to make the most of their dominance at Old Trafford last season as United edged a thrilling FA Cup quarter-final 4-3 and then snatched a 2-2 draw in the league that realistically ended Liverpool's title chances.

This time Liverpool were ruthless and could easily have matched their record 5-0 victory away to United in 2021.

United had been handed an early reprieve when Trent Alexander-Arnold fired in Diaz's deflected cross but the ball had struck Salah, who was in an offside position, on its way through to the right-back.

Casemiro had looked more like his old self in the opening matches of the campaign after struggling badly last season.

But the five-time Champions League winner had another afternoon that suggested his time at this level are now over.

Casemiro's slack pass was pounced on by Gravenberch who fed Salah and his dinked cross was headed in by Diaz at the back post.

Liverpool needed an important save from Alisson Becker moments later to parry Noussair Mazraoui's low powerful effort.

However, Ten Hag's men collapsed once the second goal went in three minutes before half-time.

Casemiro was caught in possession by Diaz, who then raced into the box to sweep home Salah's cross.

Salah got his customary goal against United on 56 minutes to rub salt in the home side's wounds.

The Egyptian's stunning finish from Dominik Szoboszlai's pass was his 15th goal in 16 meetings against the Red Devils, including at least one in each of his last seven appearances at Old Trafford.

Salah should have had more as he blazed over from close range with his team-mates begging for a pass.

Another brilliant Alisson save from Joshua Zirkzee then prolonged Liverpool's record of not having conceded under Slot.

Arsenal have been tipped as the side most likely to dethrone City as champions after four consecutive titles for Pep Guardiola's men.

But Liverpool could have done little more in the early weeks of the campaign to dispel any doubts that they remain contenders even without Klopp at the helm.

Premier League: Luis Diaz brace ensures perfect start for Liverpool and Arne Slot as Manchester United unravel

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge hit its first stumbling block in a 1-1 draw with Brighton after Declan Rice was sent-off on Saturday, while Aston Villa won 2-1 away at Leicester.

Both Arsenal and Brighton had maximum points from their opening two games and the Gunners looked set for another victory when Kai Havertz pounced on a Lewis Dunk error to lob in the opening goal.

However, the game turned just seconds into the second half when Rice controversially received the first red card of his career.

The England midfielder was deemed to have kicked the ball away as Joel Veltman shaped up to take a Brighton free-kick and was shown a second yellow card.

"I was amazed, amazed, amazed!" an outraged Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. "Amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be.

"In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens. Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan, he turns around, he doesn't see the player coming and he touches the ball."

Brighton quickly made their man advantage count as Joao Pedro swept home the rebound after David Raya denied Yankuba Minteh.

Both sides had chances to win it as Bart Verbruggen denied Havertz and Georginio Rutter headed off target late on for the visitors.

But Arsenal had to settle for a point that could see them cede early ground in the title race.

Defending champions Manchester City can go top when the visit West Ham in Saturday's 1630GMT kick-off.

<h2>Duran delivers for Villa</h2>

Villa bounced back from their defeat to Arsenal last weekend to secure their second win in three games.

Amadou Onana stretched to turn in Jacob Ramsey's cross from a well-worked free-kick to open the scoring.

Ollie Watkins is yet to find the net this season after helping England to the Euro 2024 final, but his understudy Jhon Duran has started the campaign in fine form.

The Colombian's towering header just two minutes after replacing Watkins gave Villa the breathing space they needed.

Facundo Buonanotte pulled a goal back, but the Foxes remain winless on their return to the Premier League.

Southampton have found the jump up to the top flight just as hard.

Brentford eased past the Saints 3-1 with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice.

Everton suffered another gut punch on their final season at Goodison Park as Bournemouth came from 2-0 down after 87 minutes to win 3-2.

Two quickfire goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin early in the second half had put the Toffees in control.

But Antoine Semenyo gave Bournemouth life before Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra ensured Everton remain without a point this season.

Ipswich got their first Premier League point in 22 years in a 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Liam Delap put the home side in front at Portman Road but Adama Traore secured a draw for Fulham.

Honours were also even in a 1-1 draw between Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Brighton after Declan Rice red card, Aston Villa beat Leicester

Liverpool have completed the sensational transfer of Federico Chiesa from Juventus as he becomes the first major addition to the first team for the 2024-25 season. The Reds signed the Italian international on Thursday (Aug 29) from Juventus for a fee believed to be in the region of $20 million. He follows Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second transfer for the Reds this transfer window, however, he won’t be joining Arne Slot’s side before the 2025-26 season.

<h2>Chiesa signs for Liverpool</h2>

Having been out of favour at Juventus under the management of new manager Thiago Motta, Chiesa was asked to find a new club. The player had attracted interest from Bundesliga and Spanish clubs but Liverpool raced ahead to sign the Italian ace who played a key role in the nation’s Euro 2020 win. He penned a four-year deal which will see him being the first major addition to Slot’s Liverpool who had not seen a major incoming for the 2024-25 season.

“I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans,” Chiesa told Liverpool’s official website.

“So, I’m so happy and I can’t wait to get started.”

The Italian comes with a hefty experience having started his career at Fiorentina’s academy in 2016. His breakthrough year came in 2021 when he caught the eye in the Euro 2020 where he helped Italy to clinch glory. He would spend three years at the Turin club but was largely unsuccessful in helping Juventus to league glory having won nine consecutive titles prior to his arrival.

Italy’s inability to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and injuries saw Chiesa get limited opportunities ultimately sealing his feat.

Kepa Arrizabalaga kicked off an expected exodus of out-of-favour Chelsea players in the final 48 hours of the transfer window by joining Bournemouth on a season-long loan on Thursday.

The Spanish international remains the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time after his £71 million ($94 million) move from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea in 2018.

However, he has struggled to establish himself as number one at Stamford Bridge ever since and spent last season on loan at Real Madrid.

He made 20 appearances as the Spanish giants won the Champions League and La Liga but lost his place to Andriy Lunin before Thibaut Courtois' return from injury.

Among Chelsea's bloated squad of over 50 players, Kepa was one of seven senior goalkeepers under contract.

"We were aware of his availability and were keen to take the opportunity to bring him to the club on loan."

Romelu Lukaku, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are some of the other big names that could leave Chelsea before Friday's transfer deadline after being told by head coach Enzo Maresca they will not have a part to play this season.

Premier League: Arsenal complete signing of Spain's Mikel Merino

Noni Madueke hit a hat-trick as Chelsea crushed Wolves 6-2 to give Enzo Maresca his first Premier League win as Blues boss, while Newcastle rescued a controversial 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Maresca suffered a 2-0 loss against Manchester City last weekend in his first game since arriving from Leicester to replace Mauricio Pochettino in the close-season.

Chelsea got off the mark under Maresca with a UEFA Conference League play-off victory against Servette on Thursday, but that low-key success was only the prelude to their goal spree at Molineux.

Maresca's side made the perfect start after just 98 seconds when Matheus Cunha could only flick his attempted clearance from a corner towards Nicolas Jackson, who was left unmarked to head in from six yards.

Jackson's goal infuriated Wolves fans already angry with Chelsea after Madueke posted and then deleted a critical review of Wolverhampton just hours before kick-off.

Madueke shared his location, which was Wolverhampton, in the post, which read "this place is s**t".

He later shared: "Damn wrong Instagram account. You lot are too fast."

Cunha hauled the hosts level in the 27th minute as the Brazilian forward tormented the Blues again after last season's hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's Moises Caicedo carelessly lost possession and Rayan Ait-Nouri drove forward before teeing up Cunha, whose fierce strike flashed past Robert Sanchez and sparked a samba-dancing goal celebration.

Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's advantage in the 45th minute, the England forward taking Jackson's flick and lobbing a sublime finish over Wolves keeper Jose Sa.

<h2>Chelsea run riot</h2>

The Blues made a hash of clearing Ait-Nouri's free-kick seconds before the half-time whistle and Toti headed it across to Jorgen Strand Larsen, who poked home from close-range.

But the rollercoaster clash switched back in Chelsea's favour in the 49th minute as Palmer found Madueke and his shot deflected in off Ait-Nouri.

Madueke struck again nine minutes later, slotting a composed finish through Sa's legs after Palmer's run unhinged the creaky Wolves defence.

The 22-year-old completed his treble with a carbon copy of his two previous goals, once again finishing off another Palmer assist to silence the Wolves boo-boys.

Joao Felix came off the bench to cap the rout in the 80th minute as the Portugal forward marked his debut for Chelsea following his permanent move from Atletico Madrid earlier in the week.

Felix, who spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Chelsea, blasted into the top corner after former Wolves forward Pedro Neto picked him out.

"Overall Noni was very good. In the first 10 minutes we created two or three chances and scored a goal and then we started to lose the ball," the demanding Maresca said.&nbsp;

"Absolutely there always things we can improve on. We can learn many things."

At the Vitality Stadium, Newcastle trailed when Joelinton carelessly lost possession and Antoine Semenyo's low cross was touched in by Marcus Tavernier in the 37th minute.

Eddie Howe's team equalised in the 76th minute as Harvey Barnes floated in a cross that Anthony Gordon slotted home from close-range.

Bournemouth were furious to be denied a stoppage-time winner when VAR ruled Dango Ouatarra had handled before heading in.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said: "It's very difficult to digest. It's obvious what happened. We should have won the game.

"The ball touched his shoulder. The referee could not do anything else, someone call him and said he have to disallow it. No-one will remember this in two weeks. I'm very frustrated."

Arne Slot will take charge of his first Premier League home game as Liverpool boss against Brentford later on Sunday.

Slot was hired from Feyenoord to replace Jurgen Klopp after the German stepped down at the end of last term following nine successful years at Anfield.

The 45-year-old started his reign with a 2-0 win at Ipswich in Liverpool's opening league match last weekend.

Premier League: Chelsea start Enzo Maresca era with drubbing of Wolves after Madueke hat-trick

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick to fire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday and lift the champions to the top of the Premier League table.

They lead on goal difference from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who defeated Manchester United 2-1 with a last-gasp goal, and Arsenal who struck twice late on to earn a gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur handed last-placed Everton more misery with a 4-0 victory and West Ham earned their first win of the season, 2-0 over Crystal Palace.

Manchester City scored three times in less than four minutes after conceding a shock early goal to crush Ipswich and remain perfect in their quest for a fifth consecutive league title.

Haaland kicked off City's trio of goals in 191 seconds with a penalty in the 12th minute. Kevin De Bruyne netted less than two minutes later and Haaland struck again to all but seal the victory at Etihad Stadium.

"Last season (Haaland) struggled a lot, especially at the beginning," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time with the rest with no Euros, he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable."

<h2>Late Winner</h2>

Brighton earned a dramatic home victory over United at the Amex when Joao Pedro scored in the fifth minute of added time.

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored the opener against his former club before Amad Diallo drew Erik ten Hag's men and the game looked destined for a draw.

Brighton's pressure paid off, however, when Simon Adingra chipped the ball over United's defenders for an unmarked Pedro who headed home.

"It was very emotional, always when you get the win in the last minute, it is," Brighton manager Fabian Huerzeler said. "I think we deserved to win, we had a good game not a perfect game."

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured Arsenal's win at Villa.

The victory was a measure of revenge after Villa beat the Gunners twice last season, losses that ultimately ended Arsenal's chances of winning the title.

Ollie Watkins missed two gilt-edged chances before substitute Trossard scored in the 67th minute with his first touch and Partey doubled the lead.

"A strong start is always good, especially for the feeling, how you go into a new season," Trossard said. "It's so early on so it's hard to predict what it's going to be at the end of the season, but it's definitely what we're aiming for, is to win games."

Keeper Jordan Pickford's error and Son Heung-min's brace helped Spurs to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over struggling Everton.

Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored as Tottenham eased to their first win of the campaign against a visiting side who have conceded seven times in two games.

"The performance was good," Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. "It's really encouraging for us."

Second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham to victory at Selhurst Park.

The visitors broke the deadlock when Palace struggled to clear the ball and Soucek steered the ball home.

Hammers captain Bowen added the second, latching on to a brilliant pass by Max Kilman before lashing a left-footed shot into the net.

There were more heroics from the goalscorers when West Ham's fans charged down to celebrate Soucek's goal, causing an advertising hoarding to collapse, trapping a ball boy.

Soucek held the hoarding so the child could wriggle out, with Bowen pulling the boy through his teammate's legs to safety.

"I just managed to grab him out as quick as possible, it was just instinct, just to do it," Bowen said.

Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by Fulham and early struggles continued for fellow league newcomers Southampton who lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

PL 2024/25: Manchester City on top after Haaland’s hat-trick against Ipswich Town; Arsenal win at Villa

Unai Emery has demanded Aston Villa take the next step in their development as the Spanish boss warned he does not want to "waste time" in their top four bid.

Villa qualified for this season's Champions League after surprisingly finishing fourth in the Premier League last term.

But Emery is not satisfied with that impressive achievement and he wants to see signs Villa can maintain their top four place this season, while also competing in Europe's elite club competition.

Villa started their top-flight campaign with a 2-1 win at West Ham last weekend, but Emery sees Saturday's home game against title contenders Arsenal as the acid test of his team's mettle.

"The last history of Aston Villa is progressively getting better, but five years ago they were in the Championship," Emery told reporters on Friday.

"With the new project, with the history, with the new way we want to create here, it's about trying to be contenders and be consistent. We have to try to be progressively stronger, getting in the top four like last year.

"I don't want to waste time here myself as a coach, progressing as a coach, and I want the same mentality from the players."

Villa are back in the Champions League for the first time since 1982-83, continuing their revival since former Villarreal boss Emery took charge in October 2022.

Yet Emery won't let his players rest on their laurels, saying: "To achieve the objectives we are facing, dreaming is very difficult, but I want to dream and work hard to get it.

"At the moment we are in a good way but there's still a lot of work to do to continue being consistent like I want."

When Villa last faced Arsenal in the closing weeks of last season, late goals from Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey earned a win that damaged the Gunners' hopes of winning a first league title since 2004.

Despite that victory, Emery is under no illusions about the threat posed by an Arsenal side who finished second in the last two seasons and started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Wolves.

"They are one of the favourite teams this year to win the league. It's a big challenge for us," he said. "They are favourites against us tomorrow."

Premier League: Unai Emery won't 'waste time' as Aston Villa boss demands progress

A verdict expected in coming months on Manchester City's alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations will not affect the players' performance, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town.

City were charged in February 2023 with 115 counts since their acquisition by City Football, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group. The club could face penalties such as a points deduction or relegation if found guilty.

Nottingham Forest and Everton were docked points last season for their breaches of the league's profit and sustainability rules.

City deny the charges and are contesting them. An independent commission will review allegations dating back to 2009. Guardiola said City will accept the verdict.

The Times of London said a hearing in the case is to start next month with the outcome known early next year.

"I am happy it starts soon and hopefully it finishes soon for the benefit of all of us," Guardiola told reporters. "Especially for the club, but for all the other Premier League clubs, like for all the people that don't wait for the sentence.

"I wish from deep in my heart to go to the trial, the independent panel - and I say it again, independent panel - and as soon as possible release what happened, and we will accept like always we have done."

Even with the lingering concerns around the club, City added a record fourth-straight Premier League title last season after winning the treble in the 2022-23 season.

Asked about the effect of the case on his team, Guardiola said: "No, we have been three or four years talking about that. We know it is going to happen, we accept it and focus on our matches."

Manchester City’s charges hearing will not affect form, Pep Guardiola says

Tottenham Hotspur will be without new signing Dominic Solanke for their Premier League home game against Everton after the striker picked up an ankle injury, manager Ange Postecoglou said on Friday.

Spurs signed the 26-year-old England international from Bournemouth for a reported fee of 65 million pounds ($85.25 million) this month and he played in their Premier League season opener against promoted Leicester City on Monday.

Spurs, who finished fifth last season, drew 1-1 at Leicester.

"Dom picked up a knock in the last game," Postecoglou told reporters ahead of Saturday's match. "He got through the game, but it flared up the day after, and he'll miss the game tomorrow.

"It's an ankle injury. He copped it really early on, someone went across his ankle."

Solanke scored 19 Premier League goals last season to help Bournemouth achieve their highest points total in the top flight.

Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is also unavailable for the fixture as he follows concussion protocols.

Yves Bissouma will be available, however. The 27-year-old Mali international was suspended for the Leicester game after a video showing him inhaling nitrous oxide was posted on social media.

"Biss is available but we've got some options there. The whole idea of trying to bulk up the squad is for these situations. He's available for selection. The bridge building continues," Postecoglou said.

Spurs could still change their squad.

"There's probably a couple more who will go out but we've done a fair bit of work over the past 12 months and we've brought down the demographic a fair way and brought in players in line with how we want to play but there's still a fair bit we want to do," Postecoglou said.

"I also want to pay special thanks to Pep, the City coaches and all my teammates as they help me to try and get better every single day."

Foden has already set his sights on a fifth successive Premier League crown after City started their title defence with a 2-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday.

"Last season was another very special one for everyone at the Club but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term," he said.

Foden also won the 2023-24 Premier League player of the season award and was named the Football Writers' Association footballer of the year.

City enjoyed a clean-sweep of the main awards at the Manchester ceremony as Khadija Shaw was voted the women's Player of the Year.

Premier League: Man City's Phil Foden wins PFA Player of the Year award

Ange Postecoglou admitted "wasteful" Tottenham lost their composure as Jamie Vardy's second-half equaliser gave Leicester a 1-1 draw against his profligate team on Monday.

Promoted Leicester survived a series of costly Tottenham misses either side of Pedro Porro's first-half opener for the visitors at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy made Tottenham pay for their erratic finishing with a typically predatory header, capping his surprise appearance just days after he had been ruled out by Steve Cooper after suffering a pre-season injury.

The 37-year-old has now scored nine Premier League goals in 17 appearances against Tottenham, who trudged off wondering how they had failed to demolish Leicester during their dominant first-half display.

Tottenham finished fifth in Postecoglou's first season following a campaign in which the Australian's commitment to all-out attack was eventually exposed at the cost of Champions League qualification.

Once again, Tottenham were hampered by poor finishing and unfocused defending.

Dominic Solanke was especially culpable on the striker's debut after moving from Bournemouth for a fee that could rise to £65 million ($84 million).

"Disappointing night for us. First half excellent and controlled the game but wasteful in front of goal. Once Leicester scored, the crowd lifted and we lost our composure," Postecoglou said.

"It was an issue we had last year as well. We need to keep working hard and be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. At times we made poor decisions.

"The dominance is great but if you don't score it is meaningless. We have to be stronger in our mindset in the front third. To be that wasteful is disappointing. We just weren't clinical."

Leicester are back in the Premier League after winning the Championship to end their one-year absence.

Amid reports the Foxes could face a points deductions for breaking financial rules, new boss Cooper needs to hit the ground running if they are to avoid relegation and this gritty display was an encouraging start.

"I was as fit as a fiddle until I got to about 65 minutes if I'm honest!" Vardy said.

"Tottenham are a really good team but we have them too much respect. We started getting after them and it changed the momentum.

"When we are at the top of our game we can give anyone a run for their money."

Tottenham went close to an early lead when Wilfred Ndidi cleared Rodrigo Bentancur's effort off the line before Mads Hermansen saved Brennan Johnson's fierce effort from the rebound.

Solanke's diving header was straight at Hermansen before Cristian Romero nodded Porro's cross just wide.

<h2>Sloppy Tottenham</h2>

Solanke tested Hermansen with another header and Tottenham's pressure was rewarded in the 29th minute.

James Maddison floated a pin-point cross into the Leicester area, where Porro timed his run perfectly to flick his header into the far corner from 12 yards.

Maddison almost provided another assist moments later with a superb cross that Johnson fired narrowly wide.

Solanke should have done better than shoot straight at Hermansen early in the second half, while the over-worked keeper also saved Bentancur's close-range strike.

Tottenham's wastefulness came back to haunt them in the 57th minute as Leicester struck from their first effort on target.

Unhinged far too easily, Tottenham's defenders stood statuesque as Vardy was left unmarked in the six-yard box to head in Abdul Fatawu's cross.

It was exactly the kind of sloppy goal that bedevilled Tottenham during their swoon in the closing weeks of last season.

Vardy threatened to take advantage of more disjointed Tottenham defending, surging onto Bobby Decordova-Reid's pass but failing to find the accuracy required to beat Guglielmo Vicario.

Left prone on the pitch after an awkward collision, Bentancur needed treatment for seven minutes, including being given oxygen, before he was stretchered off to be monitored for a potential concussion.

Tottenham were shaken and Vicario had to plunge to his left to claw away Boubakary Soumare's header in stoppage time before Richarlison nodded wide from close range in a fitting end to the visitors' inconsistent evening.

Premier League: Jamie Vardy strikes as Leicester City hold misfiring Spurs

Pep Guardiola’s decision to give many of Manchester City’s star players more time to recover from Euro 2024 paid dividends on Sunday when their stand-ins helped the defending champions to a 2-0 win at Chelsea under new coach Enzo Maresca.

Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden – stalwarts for England in their run to the Euro final in July – were on the bench at Stamford Bridge and Spain's Rodri was out of the squad altogether as he recovers from an injury picked up in Germany.

In came right-back Rico Lewis and winger Savinho who both tormented Chelsea while Mateo Kovacic, Rodri’s under-study, sealed the win with City’s second goal in the 84th minute after Erling Haaland, fresh from a whole summer off, opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

"We didn't expect it. We are away from our best so three points is the good news. For me it is an honour to be in charge of these guys. I'm so fortunate, I could not say more," Guardiola said when asked about the players who stepped up.

He paid tribute to Kovacic for his role in replacing Rodri whose absences last season coincided with City's three defeats in the league.

"His mum and dad gave (us) an incredible human being, he is a top-class person. Top," Guardiola said.

City are seeking a fifth straight Premier League title having already made history by winning the past four in a row although they face the risk of punishment for alleged breaches of financial rules, claims that the club denies.

Unlike City's decision to rest their Euro stars, Chelsea started with Spain’s Marc Cucurella and England's Cole Palmer who both appeared in the tournament final in Berlin on July 14.

The Blues showed flashes of the style that Chelsea’s big-spending U.S. owners – now on their fourth permanent manager since they bought the club in 2022 - hope will bring success back to west London.

But in the end, Maresca’s side were mostly reduced to unlikely penalty appeals and a fluffed attempt by Nicolas Jackson before Kovacic settled the game.

Palmer – Chelsea's runaway top scorer last season with 22 goals – was largely kept quiet by City’s defence, and new signings Pedro Neto and Marc Guiu failed to pierce the visitors’ back line.

Maresca said he saw progress and pointed to some fine margins in the game, with Haaland's opening goal standing after a narrow offside decision went City's way while Nicolas Jackson was adjudged offside when he scored what would have been an equaliser.

"We competed for large parts of the game," the Italian said. "For some moments, we were even better. We created chances. And I think the big difference today between us and them was especially inside the box and the way they managed the ball in the last part of the game."

PL 2024/25: Pep praises youngsters in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea; Haaland completes 100 games

Arsenal made a flying start to their bid to win the Premier League title as goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-0 victory against Wolves on Saturday.

Arsenal haven't won the title since Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles' went unbeaten through the 2003-04 league campaign.

Premier League: Mikel Arteta's Arsenal sink Wolves in flying start to title charge

The Premier League opening weekend has already been in the headlines as top clubs in England’s top fight look to stamp their authority. While the big names are in the spotlight, Nottingham were also in the headlines on the weekend for the wrong reasons. Facing Bournemouth on the opening weekend, midfielder Danilo suffered a horrible injury which could see him get ruled out for the rest of the season having only played seven minutes on Saturday (Aug 17).

New Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has asked for patience ahead of their Premier League opener against reigning champions Manchester City, as the Italian tries to turn around the west London side's fortunes after a series of underwhelming seasons.

Chelsea, who finished sixth last campaign and 12th in the 2022-23 season, hired the 44-year-old Maresca in June after he guided Leicester City to the English Championship title in his first season in charge.

Chelsea have gone big again in the transfer window, splashing out around 160 million pounds ($206.50 million) on signing players such as Portuguese winger Pedro Neto, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Swedish-Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

"We are going to try and do our best to win games," Maresca, who had a spell as one of Pep Guardiola's assistant managers at City, told reporters on Friday.

"The big difference between us, in this moment, and other teams is that it is just a matter of time. Some clubs work with a manager for eight years, so with time we will close the gap and hopefully that can happen soon.

"Sometimes it (time) sounds like an excuse from managers and I know timing in football is difficult, but in our case with the process and ideas we will close the gap.

"We need their (fans) support because when you are on the pitch and you can hear the fans behind the team it is like 12 players. If they support us and be patient then we will pay them back with performance and results."

Chelsea will be without captain Reece James after the 24-year-old right back picked up a hamstring injury.

Maresca said midfielder Conor Gallagher, 24, was training apart and would not be available for Sunday's clash at Stamford Bridge. Gallagher was close to a move to LaLiga club Atletico Madrid but British media reports said it had been put on hold.

"He is trying to find a solution with the club," Maresca said.

Premier League: Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca seeks time after chaotic spending spree

A late goal by new signing Joshua Zirkzee earned Manchester United a nervy 1-0 victory over Fulham in their Premier League season opener at Old Trafford on Friday.

Home supporters were in buoyant mood ahead of the first game of the English top-flight campaign, with four players unveiled on the pitch and new faces in the United boardroom also in attendance.

Just as they did at home for much of last season, however, United struggled to break down their opponents in the first half, with captain Bruno Fernandes going closest to scoring the opener.

Frustrations grew after the break, only for Dutch substitute Zirkzee to arrive right on cue three minutes from time to earn United victory.

"To win here in my first home game and to grab a goal, it couldn't be better," Zirkzee told Sky Sports. "I've been told (scoring at the Stretford End) is one of the best feelings at Man United. I'm so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It's an amazing feeling.

"Manchester United is a huge club. You should always strive for the best. It's all good vibes."

Without a Premier League title since 2013 and having addressed key problem areas in the transfer market, United supporters are expecting better than their eighth-place finish last term.

<h2>Fine Evening</h2>

When the action started on a fine evening, however, the mood around the stadium was less enthusiastic as United again looked short of ideas in attack.

A smart save from goalkeeper Andre Onana kept an early curling Kenny Tete effort out while Fernandes was presented with two golden opportunities but was denied by Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

Midfielder Mason Mount, handed a starting spot after an injury-ravaged first season in Manchester, went close early in the second half.

More wayward passing led to groans from supporters, however, before despair turned to jubilation at the death when substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Zirkzee combined to create the winner.

United have more wins and more points from their opening games of Premier League campaigns than any other team, but this performance suggested there is still much to be done for manager Erik ten Hag.

"Subs are always important and it was good to see in the first game that you bring a sub on and he scores the winner," Ten Hag said. "Against Fulham it is always a difficult game, but we defended and pressed very well. After 10 minutes we found our spell in the game and we kept them under pressure. We created a lot of chances and we should have scored earlier and that is the only criticism of the team - kill in the box."

Fulham manager Marco Silva was disappointed to take nothing from the match.

"It is really tough for us to lose this game the way we lost," he said. "We started really well, after 20 minutes good reaction from Man United. We adjusted at halftime and the second half was much better. When you play against Manchester United...there were moments and we had to punish them."

Premier League 2024/2025: Joshua Zirkzee scores on debut as Manchester United beat Fulham in opener

Arne Slot got off to a winning Premier League start as Liverpool manager thanks to two quickfire goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in a 2-0 win at newly-promoted Ipswich on Saturday.

Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but the Dutchman will have been heartened by a commanding second-half performance.

Ipswich were riding the crest of a wave after back-to-back promotions and a return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

Celebrity fan and minority owner Ed Sheeran was in attendance at Portman Road, although the singer-songwriter had to leave at half-time to attend a gig in Serbia.

Sheeran saw the best of the Tractor Boys, who were far from overawed by their illustrious opponents early on.

Omari Hutchinson had a shot blocked inside two minutes before Jacob Greaves headed the best chance of the first half too close to Alisson Becker.

Slot is the only new face at Anfield as Liverpool are the only side in the Premier League yet to make a signing in the transfer window.

The need for some fresh faces was shown in a sloppy and slow first 45 minutes on the ball.

However, Slot's half-time team talk did the trick as the Reds were a different side after the break and could have ran out far more convincing winners.

Greaves needed to make a vital clearance to prevent Salah's effort curling in at the far corner.

But Liverpool also had a narrow escape as a potential penalty for a Virgil van Dijk push on Liam Delap was ruled out for a marginal offside in the build-up.

Luis Diaz missed a glorious chance to open the scoring when he scooped over from close range after wonderful play from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai to tee up the Colombian.

Alexander-Arnold's teasing cross was then headed wide by Jota with the goal gaping.

Liverpool's pressure finally told on the hour mark as another defence-splitting pass from Alexander-Arnold opened up Ipswich and Salah unselfishly squared for Jota to make amends for his earlier miss.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Salah pounced to score for the ninth time on the opening weekend of the season for Liverpool after a one-two with Szoboszlai.

Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton made a string of saves in the closing stages, notably from Salah and Conor Bradley, to prevent a more embarrassing opening day defeat.

Kieran McKenna's men had been unbeaten at home in the league for nearly 12 months.

But Ipswich were given an early lesson in the gulf in quality between the Championship and Premier League.

Things will not get any easier for Ipswich next weekend when they travel to defending champions Manchester City.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have the chance to build up some early momentum under Slot.

Either side of a trip to Manchester United next month, they face Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves and Crystal Palace in their next six Premier League games before the October international break.

Premier League: Liverpool manager Arne Slot off to winning start at Ipswich

Manchester United kick-started the Premier League season with a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday (Aug 16) as Joshua Zirkzee scored the only goal of the match. United, having lost the Community Shield against arch-rivals Manchester City needed a late rescue act to get the three points. After the win, Manchester United legend Gary Neville was optimistic about Manchester United’s credentials and termed it “steady and unspectacular” as they now look to build on.

<h2>Neville optimistic about Manchester United</h2>

"It was steady and unspectacular," he said on Sky Sports Football. "They had to win and it didn't look like they were going to for large parts of that game.

"It was critical that they won and the clean sheet was important. Defensively they will be better than they were last season and the squad looks bigger and thicker. It wasn't spectacular football but given the way they set up tonight, I didn't expect it to be.”

Manchester United faced huge backlash last season having finished eighth in the Premier League with manager Erik ten Hag on the brink of sack. However, United beat Man City in the FA Cup final in May which saw the Dutchman retain the faith of the management and stay at the job.

The Red Devils were frustrated for the majority of the match but managed to squeeze the win&nbsp;through new signing Zirkzee. United were without Rasmus Hojlund for the contest who was injured in the pre-season. Ten Hag’s side will face Brighton next Saturday and will look to register back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

Manchester City will kick off their quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title on Sunday without Oscar Bobb, who could miss up to four months after breaking his leg in training, and Rodri, who is recovering from an injury sustained at Euro 2024.

City open their season against Chelsea and, with key Euro players rejoining the squad only this week, manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the squad might not be at full strength.

"We have to (be ready), we have to," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "I don't know what's going to happen. Everybody knows we are not in the best condition but it doesn't matter, we have a desire to do well. I think there are a lot of teams right now that aren't perfect.

"What I have learned is that the season is so long. You have to be ready physically and mentally. For that, you need rest. We try to do our best in the condition we were in. The players that are here will have to do their best."

Guardiola said he was very sad for Norwegian forward Bobb, who is expected to be out for three or four months after undergoing surgery for a leg fracture.

Rodri was injured just before halftime of Spain's Euro 2024 clash with England in the final.

"He is in training, I don't know, I haven't seen him yet. He feels good. We'll have to see how he feels after training," Guardiola said, then added: "No chance (that he will play on Sunday)."

Rodri, plus England's Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden returned to training only at the start of the week after their 2023-24 season stretched through to the Euro final on July 14.

"We prioritise the rest," Guardiola said. "I would love to give more time but it is what it is. I demand the best on Sunday against Chelsea. When the players are fitter and better, they have to be better."

The manager wished England international Kalvin Phillips well in his move to newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town on a season-long loan that is all but settled.

The defensive midfielder started just six games for City after arriving from Leeds two years and then joined West Ham on loan in January but played only 10 games there before returning to City.

"You have to have minutes -- play, play, play," Guardiola said. "Maybe there is a chance (for Phillips) to come back here in the future."

Premier League: Blow to Manchester City as Oscar Bob out for four months, Rodri ‘not ready’ for opener

Premier League new boys Ipswich signed Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan on Friday.

Phillips has endured a difficult time with Premier League champions City and the move to Ipswich marks the latest attempt to get his spluttering career back on track.

The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on a troubled loan spell with West Ham, could make his Ipswich debut in Saturday's clash with Liverpool.

The Reds' visit to Portman Road will be Ipswich's first match in the top flight for 22 years after Kieran McKenna's side won back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship.

"This is a day I've been waiting a number of weeks for now and I'm very happy to be here," Phillips said.

"I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League."

Phillips has 31 England caps and represented his country at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

But he has made only five top-flight starts since leaving Leeds to join City for a reported £45 million ($58 million) in 2022.

"Kalvin has much to offer us in terms of his qualities both on and off the ball, and he is a really humble and likeable character," McKenna said.

"He has been a key member of a newly-promoted team in the Premier League before and of course made a big impression for Leeds United during that period."

Phillips was Ipswich's second signing on Friday following the arrival of Blackburn forward Sammie Szmodics for a reported £9 million initial fee on a four-year contract.

The 28-year-old scored 33 goals in all competitions for second-tier Rovers last season and had hit three in two matches this term.

"It's every boy's dream to play in the Premier League and I've always said to my friends, family and agents that I'll get to the top one day," Szmodics said.

"There's nothing more I want than to score at Portman Road for Ipswich Town."

How to watch Premier League 2024-25 in Australia: Live streaming details

Ahead of the 2024-25 Premier League opener, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has shared his concerns that his team isn't 'ready' for the season-opener versus Fulham on Saturday (Aug 17). The Red Devils, who kickoff the season at Old Trafford, have a herculean task to bounce back in the new edition after failing to finish in the top-four in 2023/24. Some of their new signings have joined the squad very late whereas they are also battling injury concerns; adding to Ten Hag's concerns.

Notably, new signings Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui joined the squad on Thursday and, thus, have limited training opportunities. Meanwhile, defender Luke Shaw is&nbsp;sidelined with a calf injury,&nbsp;new recruit Leny Yoro is out for three months due to foot injury, and forward Rasmus Hojlund is battling a hamstring issue.

<h2>'WE CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT, HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT'</h2>

Thus, Ten Hag stated before the PL opener, "The team is not ready but the league starts. There are more managers who definitely have this problem but we have to make a start. We can’t hide from it. We can’t run away from it. We have to deal with it."

Ten Hag has a lot&nbsp;on his plate. He has to solve a selection problem at left-back, with Shaw unavailable due to a calf injury and Tyrell Malacia out of action for another two months -- being on recovery process post a knee surgery. It is believed that Mazraoui could be one answer whereas Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez filled in during last Saturday's Community Shield.

The Dutchman said, "It's not about the players who are not available. It's also what I said always last season: it's about the players who are available and we have a good group, we can make a strong selection."

Ten Hag is positive about Shaw's swift return. He hasn't played for United since early this year, due to hamstring injury, although he was fit enough for England's campaign&nbsp;in Euro 2024, where they ended second.&nbsp;

In this regard, Ten Hag&nbsp;added, "He will return in the short term. It doesn't take long. Luke is a very important player for our team so we want to get him back as soon as possible but we can't force this process."

Despite a lot of criticism, Ten Hag continues as Man United manager especially following the Red Devils' FA Cup win over Manchester City in late May. He will hope to silence his critics by leading the former PL champions' comeback in the new season.
