<h2>McKenna signs until 2028</h2>

"I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the club," McKenna told Ipswich's website.

"We have enjoyed incredible success together over the last two seasons and I'm excited to have the opportunity and responsibility of leading this fantastic club into its first season in the Premier League in 22 years," he further said.

He was also on the radar of Chelsea who pulled out of the race to sign McKenna earlier this week and will instead sign another promoted manager Enzo Maresca who was with Leicester City.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has signed a new five-year contract, the Premier League club announced Monday (May 27). The Spaniard has been rewarded after guiding the Birmingham club to a fourth-placed finish and Champions League qualification last season. Emery, 52, has transformed Villa's fortunes since arriving in October 2022 with the team just three points above the relegation zone. "I am very happy to take this step (signing a new contract) and the responsibility of leading this club," Emery told Villa's website. "Since I came to Villa with (co-owner) Wes (Edens) and (chairman) Nassef (Sawiris) we found always the best environment and structure to develop a project with the highest ambition." "There's a great chemistry in Aston Villa and the element of the fans' support also makes the difference to feel like home. We are really excited to continue this journey with no limits to our dreams." Watch | All the titles won by Toni Kroos in his career × Villa chairman Sawiris added: "We are building something special here at Aston Villa with Unai at its core and we are delighted that he has signed a new deal with the club until 2029. "As we move into our historic, 150th anniversary year, there is a lot to look forward to with Unai at the helm." Emery, is a four-time Europa League winner following spells with Spanish clubs Sevilla and Villarreal. He lifted the Ligue 1 trophy at Paris Saint-Germain and also spent a year in charge of Arsenal from 2018-19. He then steered Villa, the 1982 European Cup winners, to a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League in 2023 and has now overseen their return to European club football's elite competition after an absence of more than 40 years.

Pep Guardiola is expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the season next year, according to media reports. Guardiola, who recently secured a fourth consecutive Premier League title with City is in the final year of his managerial contract and does not seem inclined to sign an extension. Quizzed during the open bus parade for the historic four-peat, Guardiola was asked: "At the start of next season, you will be the Premier League's longest-serving manager. Would you just stay forever, please? Can we just get you to stay forever?" Guardiola, caught off guard by the question, responded in a rather awkward manner: "Forever?! [laughs]" "Even myself, I couldn't expect to stay here eight years but everything goes well. Step-by-step we are here. It looks routine but it's not routine," added Guardiola. The Spanish manager, however, promised to see out his contract and said City will bounce back next season from their FA Cup final disappointment. "We will be back next season," Guardiola said. “The FA Cup, we will take it.” According to reports, the upper management at the club has already started to compile a list of potential successors to Guardiola who can carry his mantle. Also read | Premier League: Manchester City become first team to claim four consecutive titles with win over West Ham 'Closer to leaving' Notably, Sunday (May 26) was not the first instance when Guardiola has given an ambiguous answer regarding his future at City. After winning the title last week, Guardiola was asked the same question where in replied that he was closer to leaving than staying. "The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying. We have talked with the club and my feeling is that I want to stay now. I will stay next season and during the season we will talk. But after eight or nine years, we will see," said Guardiola. "I have a contract, I'm still here. Some of the moments I'm a bit tired, but some of the moments I love and we are here winning games, looking good with new players." Having previously coached the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, it is highly likely that Guardiola would opt for a sabbatical like his Liverpool compatriot, Jurgen Klopp. The German manager said goodbye to Anfield after nine successful seasons at the club and forging a hyper-competitive rivalry with Guardiola. Pep Guardiola to depart Manchester City at the end of season: Reports

Southampton clinched promotion back to the Premier League after a one-year exile as Adam Armstrong sealed a 1-0 win against Leeds in the Championship play-off final on Sunday.

Armstrong's first-half strike at Wembley ensured Southampton erased the bitter taste of last year's relegation from the top-flight with an immediate return.

Victory in football's single richest match will give Southampton an estimated £140 million ($178 million) windfall due to the increases in matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue for clubs who reach the Premier League.

Financial experts Deloitte say Southampton could eventually bank £305 million if they avoid relegation next season.

While the cash prize is a huge bonus, it is the prestige of competing with Manchester City and Arsenal, rather than second-tier minnows like Plymouth and Oxford, that fuelled Southampton's hunger to regain their Premier League status after a year in purgatory.

Southampton, whose only major honour is the 1976 FA Cup, had spent 11 years in the Premier League prior to their relegation.

They will hope this success, celebrated by over 35,000 of their fans at Wembley, is the prelude to another lengthy spell among the elite.

In their first ever play-off final, Southampton made it three wins over Leeds this term despite finishing three points behind the Elland Road club in the regular season.

Saints boss Russell Martin has become widely admired for his purist passing principles and this was the 38-year-old's crowning glory.

Martin was managing in League One with Milton Keynes Dons just three years ago, but he has transformed Southampton in his first season in charge, to such an extent that they boasted more possession than any team in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Securing promotion at Leeds boss Daniel Farke's expense was a sweet moment for Martin after his Norwich contract was terminated by the German during their time together at Carrow Road in 2018.

Defeat was a bitter blow for Farke and Leeds, who were relegated alongside Southampton last season.

With Rain Man actor Dustin Hoffman watching from the stands, it was fitting that the heavens opened over Wembley as a torrential downpour hit just before kick-off.

Leeds made a fast start but Southampton weathered the storm and as the sun appeared through the clouds, they gradually took control.

Will Smallbone threatened to put Southampton ahead with a 30-yard free-kick that was clawed away by Illan Meslier.

It was a warning Leeds failed to heed as Southampton snatched the lead with a clinical raid in the 24th minute.

Armstrong had scored twice in the play-off semi-final win over West Brom and the striker showcased his predatory instincts again with his 24th goal this season.

Cleverly eluding the Leeds offside trap with a well-timed run, Armstrong met Smallbone's pass with a superb strike into the far corner from 12 yards.

Leeds were rocked and Armstrong nearly struck again from another instinctive shot from Smallbone's quick free-kick, but this time Meslier was able to parry his close-range effort.

Early in the second half, Leeds defender Joe Rodon embarked on a rampaging run that looked certain to end in a goal until Taylor Harwood-Bellis threw himself into a last-ditch block.

Former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney was appointed as the new manager of Championship side Plymouth on Saturday.

A move to Argyle is the fourth managerial role of Rooney's coaching career, which has so far failed to live up to his stellar playing days.

"Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career," said Rooney in a club statement.

"This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army."

The 38-year-old was sacked after just 83 days in charge of Birmingham earlier this year.

Rooney won just two of his 15 matches in charge of the Blues, which contributed to their relegation to League One.

Premier League (PL) Manchester United's goalkeeper Andre Onana says that he is not at the club to 'back' manager Erik Ten Hag. The comments come at a time when the Dutch manager is facing piercing scrutiny over United's worst-ever finish in the Premier League.&nbsp;

Manchester United finished eighth on the PL points table with only 18 wins in 38 games to go with six draws and 14 losses.

"He's a good guy, a good coach," Onana said, ahead of United's FA Cup final on Saturday, May 25 against the local rivals Manchester City.

"Tactically he's very good, and he showed it last season. I was not here last season and they got top four. This season a lot of things happened. I'm not here to back him. He is big enough to back himself, but he is a really good guy, he is a positive coach and tactically he's good."

"If [Ten Hag] had all his squad, it would probably be different," Onana said.

"This season is difficult for him, for us, for the club, for the fans because it is frustrating for the fans when they are coming away and how we are losing, it is difficult." He added.

One of the reasons for United's struggle this season is the form of English forward Marcus Rashford, who managed just eight goals this season compared to 30 last year.

Speaking on his struggles, Onana said: "He's a bad player? So last season he was good, this season he is bad? No. It is just a moment. You can have a bad season, you can have a bad start. But the most important thing is how you end, and Rashy, for me, is one of the best players in the world."

The Football Association (FA) of England charged Lucas Paquetá with betting rule breaches on Thursday (May 23), making the West Ham United midfielder the latest player to join the list. Salah had had a heated discussion with Klopp a few weeks ago on the sideline during the game against West Ham. The 31-year-old, however, seems to have moved forward from the incident. "It was great sharing all those trophies and experiences with you over the past seven years," Salah wrote on social media alongside a picture of him and Klopp. "I wish you the best of luck for the future and hope we meet again," his post further read. Dutchman Arne Slot has replaced Klopp at the Premier League club and will take the charge on June 1st. Slot, who has moved to Liverpool from Feyenoord, has the first game as manager against Real Betis in pre-season friendly. Salah is expected to be available for the game as he will not be playing any international tournament this year. Some of his teammates, however, will be unavailable for national duties in Copa America and Euro 2024. Euro 2024 starts on June 15 while Copa America starts in June 21.

"The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying,"&nbsp;Pep said post the match.

'I am closer to leaving than staying': Pep Guardiola hints at potential Man City exit after 2024-25 season

Liverpool owner John Henry's wife Linda Pizzuti has clapped back at Manchester City's social media team after the latter won a fourth successive Premier League title but aimed a subtle dig at the Merseyside club.&nbsp;

After Pep Guardiola's team won the final match of the season against West Ham United to beat Arsenal to the trophy by two points, City's social media account posted, “THIS MEANS FOUR” with four trophy emojis.

The caption was an apparent reference to Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold's statement from early in the season when he suggested that winning the title at Anfield "meant more" due to City's spending and the 115 breaches of financial rules levelled against it.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Looking back on this era, although they've won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially. How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans," said Trent at the time.&nbsp;

Pizzuti understood the subtle dig and took to her Instagram account. She posted a picture of the Man City jibe and captioned: “A sincere congratulations to Man City - Premier League Champions! “So much respect for this tremendous achievement.”

She ended her message with a subtle jab of her own writing: “Thanks for thinking of us on your special day.”

While City won the title, Liverpool bid farewell to manager Jurgen Klopp who departed the club after nine successful years, where he won every silverware available.&nbsp;

“For us, it is the Liverpool way. We do it properly and do it the right way; we don’t overspend, we always spend what we earned either on the team, a stand or a building," said Klopp in his parting message.

“This is a healthy club. You can say Barcelona are not healthy, but they are still up there. I don’t think we could do it that way. It is really healthy, a very vital club with a wonderful training ground, sensational stadium, financially not bad.

While Guardiola has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest managers to ever grace the sport, the legitimacy of his titles has been shrouded in controversy with the 115 charges looming large over the club. A court hearing is scheduled for later this year with the verdict expected to come out next year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

‘Thinking of us...’: Liverpool owner’s wife hits back at Manchester City after Premier League win

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has asked the team to not be satisfied with the second-placed finish in the Premier League season on Sunday (May 19). Arsenal was beaten by two points at the hand of Manchester City who went on to win their record fourth consecutive PL title - a first in the league history.

Arsenal, who beat Everton to finish with 89 points, needed City to lose to West Ham but the eventual champions won their game 3-1 and finished the league at 91 - two points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal's 89 points are third highest in the league history to finish without the title.

"Now it is time to have a break, think, reflect, and please keep pushing. Keep inspiring this team. Don't be satisfied because we want much more than that and we are going to get it," Arteta said after the game against Everton.

"If we do what we have to do, we're going to be closer and at the end we'll win it. When, I don't know. But if we keep knocking and being that close, in the end it will happen," he added.

"No one has to explain what the level is because I was there four years every day and I know what we have to do if we are going to reach there. Not only for one season, but for the rest, but we are on the right path, the right journey and to see the evolution so quickly happening, I haven't seen it before," &nbsp;Arteta said of champions City where he served as a coach under manager Pep Guardiola for four years.

’Arne Slot, na na na na na’: Jurgen Klopp rolls out red carpet for new manager on Liverpool farewell - WATCH

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi will leave the Premier League club by mutual consent after their final game of the season against Manchester United on Sunday.

De Zerbi took charge at the Amex Stadium in September 2022 and led Brighton to their highest ever top-flight finish when they came sixth in 2022-23.

"We have mutually agreed to end Roberto's contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future," Brighton chairman Tony Bloom said on Saturday.

"Roberto has given us two excellent seasons of service in which he has led the club to new heights, not least our first ever European campaign which will live long in the memory of Albion fans."

The Italian, previously in charge at Shakhtar Donetsk, earned widespread admiration after taking Brighton into Europe for the first time in their history, advancing to the Europa League last 16 before losing to Roma 4-1 on aggregate.

But the Seagulls struggled to replicate that fine form during an injury-plagued campaign that will peter out with a mid-table finish after Sunday's match against United.

"I am very sad to be leaving Brighton, but I am very proud of what my players and staff have achieved with the support of everyone at the club and our amazing fans in the past two historical seasons," De Zerbi said.

"We have agreed to end my time at Brighton so that the club and I can continue to work in the way that suits each of us best, following our own ideas and visions, as well as our work and human values."

De Zerbi had been linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool before Feyenoord boss Arne Slot confirmed he will move to Anfield in the close-season.

The 44-year-old is reported to be the top choice for the Bayern Munich job, with Thomas Tuchel leaving the German giants at the end of the season.

Bayern have failed with moves for Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick, while their former manager Hansi Flick is another potential candidate.

De Zerbi, hired to replace Graham Potter after his move to Chelsea, was reportedly frustrated by Brighton's philosophy of developing young players and then selling them at a significant profit.

Moises Caicedo, Leandro Trossard, Marc Cucurella, Alexis Mac Allister and Robert Sanchez were among the stars who left Brighton to join bigger clubs in De Zerbi's reign.

De Zerbi is believed to feel he could not take Brighton any further without being able to keep his best players.

"I have really enjoyed an intense and challenging two years working in the Premier League, not least competing in four major competitions this season," he said.&nbsp;

"Leaving now provides me with time to take a break before deciding on my future plans."

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is believed to be high on Brighton's list of candidates to replace De Zerbi.

McKenna has led Ipswich into the Premier League after successive promotions from League One and the Championship.

"I am sure our fans will give Roberto and his staff a wonderful and fully deserved send off at the Amex before, during and after tomorrow's match," Bloom said.

Premier League: Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi to leave at the end of season

Pep Guardiola urged history-chasing Manchester City to seize their title "destiny" as the battle for Premier League supremacy reaches a thrilling climax on Sunday.

Guardiola's all-conquering team go into the final day of the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal thanks to an eight-game winning streak.

City host West Ham knowing a win will seal an unprecedented fourth successive English title.

Arsenal have been near flawless themselves in 2024, with 15 wins and one draw, away to City, in 17 league matches.

However, the Gunners' costly 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa last month looks set to be decisive in a thrilling title race that also involved Liverpool until their recent stumbles.

Arsenal, who finished second last year, must beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium and hope City fail to win if they are to end their 20-year wait for the title.

Guardiola doesn't expect a favour from Everton, who have nothing to play for, and will instead focus on ensuring his players finish the job themselves.

"The destiny is in our hands, but if you are thinking that Everton are going to do something, forget about it. I have seen Arsenal all season," he said. "We just focus on what we have to do against West Ham. There is not any contamination in my brain about anything other than what we have to do to beat West Ham."

Not for the first time, City have been at their relentless best in the intense heat of the run-in.

Guardiola's men have dropped just six points since mid-December, in draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

As City close in on a sixth title in seven seasons under Guardiola, the competitiveness of the world's most-watched league has been questioned.

But the Catalan coach has hit back at suggestions the Premier League has become boring and that City's dominance is thanks purely to the financial muscle of their Abu Dhabi-based owners.

"It's not boring, it's difficult," Guardiola said.

Arsenal have set a club record by winning 27 Premier League games this season, but that still might not be enough to dethrone City.

"We have to give ourselves the opportunity to live a beautiful day on Sunday, where the dream is still alive and is possible," Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta said. "It's football and once we are there, we just have to live the moment."

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City chases historic fourth-straight PL title as season's final day arrives

Outgoing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his competitor and Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, calling him the best in the world. Klopp will manage Liverpool in his last game against Wolves on the 2023/24 Premier League’s final day on Sunday, while Pep’s City will face West Ham with the historic fourth-straight PL title on the line.

Klopp will manage Liverpool in his last game against Wolves on the 2023/24 Premier League’s final day on Sunday, while Pep’s City will face West Ham with the historic fourth-straight PL title on the line. Klopp also commented on 115 charges levelled against City over financial breaches. Having faced each other countless times during their stints as respective Premier League managers over the years, Klopp is aware of Pep’s game and skill set as the coach, saying despite acknowledging the charges levelled against his club, no other manager with the same resources could have achieved what Pep did. While Pep’s City were the defending champions ahead of this season, having won it on the past three occasions, they have a chance to go one step ahead and create history – becoming the first-ever PL club to win four consecutive trophies. ALSO READ: Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City chases historic fourth-straight PL title as season's final day arrives "Everybody knows about the 115 charges, but I have no clue what that means. I only know the number. No matter what has transpired at Man City, Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world - and that is truly significant." "Put any other manager in, they don't win the PL four times in a row. That's down to him [Pep Guardiola] and his team. Does that mean they can do whatever they want? No. But I don't know what they did - if anything - and I'm not here to say they have,” Klopp said during a recent interview. The verdict will be out one day With the Premier League announcing that they have begun an investigation into 115 charges against Manchester City, the verdict could be out any day, with Klopp saying, like everyone, he would also like to know about how faulty they were. But until the verdict is out, Klopp is unwilling to think about it, instead continues praising Pep for the difference he makes to a competition. “We'll see. Of course, I'd like to know [if Man City are guilty] one day. Everyone wants to know. But I'll be somewhere else. The quality of Pep makes the difference, so I don't worry about these things. It's not my problem,” he said. Meanwhile, Klopp and Pep have faced each other 30 times across all competitions, with the Liverpool boss winning 12 times, losing 11 times and playing a draw eight times. City is number one on the points table with 88 points, while Arsenal is second (86 points) and Liverpool is third with 79 points.

Premier League: Arne Slot signs as new Liverpool manager to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has taken a dig at players from his former side, calling the management to transfer them all except Bruno Fernandes. According to Rooney, Fernandes is the only quality player in the current Manchester United squad as the team struggles on all fronts. The Red Devils beat Newcastle United in a thrilling 3-2 win at Old Trafford on&nbsp;Wednesday,&nbsp;but are out of contention for European qualification next season, sitting eighth in the Premier League standings.

<h2>Rooney heaps praise at&nbsp;Fernandes</h2>

"You have to build around Bruno.&nbsp;He's&nbsp;the one player with quality. He has got fight in him. I think you keep the young players and Bruno. I think it has to be a massive clearout, it&nbsp;has to be.&nbsp;It's&nbsp;not going to be in one year&nbsp;but&nbsp;it's&nbsp;got&nbsp;to be over the next couple of years,"&nbsp;Rooney said on Sky Sports on Wednesday.

"To compete in this league, they need better players and&nbsp;don't&nbsp;get me wrong, these players are good players and Premier League players.&nbsp;But to compete with Manchester City, with Liverpool, with&nbsp;Arsenal&nbsp;they need better players."

United will close their Premier League season on Sunday away at Brighton and are in danger of missing out on European football qualification for the first time since the 2014-15 season. They&nbsp;currently&nbsp;sit eighth in the standings with 57 points and need to better&nbsp;Newcastle’s&nbsp;result to finish in the Conference League spot.&nbsp;

Premier League: Wayne Rooney takes dig at Man Utd players, laments Bruno Fernandez as only QUALITY player

Amad Diallo scored his first Premier League goal and assisted on another to power Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday at Old Trafford in a battle between teams fighting for a European berth next season.

Erik ten Hag's team remained eighth in the table but level on 57 points with seventh-placed Newcastle. Chelsea are sixth on 60 points after beating Brighton &amp; Hove Albion 2-1 earlier on Wednesday to take a big step toward clinching a European berth.

"Obviously the job isn't finished yet," Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports. "We still have one game in the Premier League then the biggest game of the season, the FA Cup final (on May 25 against holders Manchester City).

"It has been a tough season," he added. "The table shows that and we are all aware of that. The fans have been amazing and behind us all season. We all appreciate what they have been doing for us. We want to do better and do differently and (the fans) deserve that."

Kobbie Mainoo capitalised on Newcastle's appalling defence to get the home side on the scoreboard in the 31st minute. Diallo spotted the 19-year-old unmarked near the penalty spot and Mainoo -- kept onside by a half-asleep Kieran Trippier -- turned and fired home.

Anthony Gordon drew Newcastle level in the 49th minute when he slid to stab in a cross from Jacob Murphy. But Diallo put Ten Hag's team back on top eight minutes later when Fernandes' corner was headed out, and Diallo, prowling alone just inside the 18-yard-box rifled in a shot which keeper Martin Dubravka had little chance of saving.

Rasmus Hojlund, who entered the game in the 82nd minute, scored two minutes later when he cut inside two defenders and slotted home from 16 yards, holding up a finger as if to silence the crowd.

Newcastle's Lewis Hall pulled one back in injury time, but Ten Hag's men held on to end one of the most miserable home seasons in years with a victory.

Ten Hag addressed the Old Trafford crowd after the game, thanking them for being the "best supporters in the world." "As you know it wasn't an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team," Ten Hag, whose job has been the subject of speculation amid his team's struggles this season, said to cheers from the red-clad crowd.

"This season is not over yet. First we go to Brighton where we travel for three points (on the final day of the season on Sunday) and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford."

If Ten Hag's men win the FA Cup, they will play in the Europa League next season. However, if they fail to win the Cup, they will need to finish seventh to secure a place in the Europa Conference League.

Manchester United, who have never finished lower than seventh in the Premier League, need to better Newcastle's result at Brentford on Sunday to move up to seventh place.

Both teams had numerous scoring chances and Newcastle screamed for a penalty late in the first half after Gordon was taken down in the box in a tackle that left a gaping hole in the back of his sock. After a VAR review, no penalty was given.

"I don't understand the point in VAR? (Sofyan) Amrabat fouled me and it's a clear penalty," Anthony told Sky. "Get rid (of VAR) or get better."

<h2>Chelsea down Brighton</h2>

Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku struck either side of halftime to earn Chelsea a 2-1 win over Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Wednesday, sending the London club into the final day of the Premier League season in sixth place.

Palmer turned in Marc Cucurella's cross with a powerful header in the 34th minute to claim the 22nd league goal of his outstanding debut season and put the visitors in front at the Amex Stadium. Nkunku side-footed home Malo Gusto's cutback in the 64th minute to double Chelsea's lead, but they then lost substitute Reece James to a straight red card for a petulant kick out at Joao Pedro in the 88th minute.

Danny Welbeck snatched a goal back for the hosts when he latched on to Pedro's cross in the seventh minute of stoppage time, ensuring a frenetic end to the match, but Chelsea held on to win a fourth consecutive league game for the first time this season.

Cucurella, who was given a torrid reception by the home fans on his return to his former club, thought he had earned a penalty when he went down following a corner in the 15th minute, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check.

Victory sent Chelsea into their final match against Bournemouth on Sunday with hope still alive of qualifying for the Europa League, despite a horrendous start to their campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino's men began the season with one win in their first six league matches and three in their first 10, but are finishing strong, with just one defeat in their last 14 league outings.

Brighton, who are 10th, end the season at home to Manchester United.

Amad Diallo scored his first Premier League goal and assisted on another to power Manchester United to a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday at Old Trafford in a battle between teams fighting for a European berth next season.

"This season is not over yet. First we go to Brighton where we travel for three points (on the final day of the season on Sunday) and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you those players will give everything to get that cup and bring it to Old Trafford." If Ten Hag's men win the FA Cup, they will play in the Europa League next season. "Get rid (of VAR) or get better." Premier League clubs to vote on scrapping ‘dodgy’ technology Chelsea down Brighton Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku struck either side of halftime to earn Chelsea a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, sending the London club into the final day of the Premier League season in sixth place.

Blow to Manchester City as Ederson ruled out of FA Cup final with eye socket injury

The majority of the 20 Premier League clubs are in favour of keeping Video Assistant Referees (VAR), a day after Wolverhampton Wanderers brought the official resolution to vote on whether the technology should be scrapped or not.&nbsp;

The clubs, though not entirely happy with the product, want VAR to&nbsp;continue as scrapping it would be "counterproductive" and might "damage the standing of the Premier League", according to a report in Sky Sports.

The clubs want significant improvements in the technology, which includes better training for the humans operating it as their interpretation of rules has often let down the system.&nbsp;

On Wednesday (May 15), Wolves surprised many by stating they&nbsp;had&nbsp;brought the resolution "after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, PGMOL and our fellow competitors". The proposal had&nbsp;triggered a vote which will take place when the clubs gather in Harrogate on June 6 for the annual general meeting.&nbsp;

"There is no blame to be placed. We are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success," Wolves said in a statement.&nbsp;

“Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result, we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards," it added.&nbsp;

VAR was introduced in the top tier of English football five seasons ago in 2019/20 after its successful implementation in the Russia World Cup. However, since then, the technology has been under constant controversy with clubs often ruing that VAR was not doing what it had set out to correct.&nbsp;

Manchester City took pole position in the Premier League title&nbsp;race after their Tuesday (May 14) evening win over Tottenham Hotspur. <h2>Stefan Ortega comes good for Man&nbsp;City</h2>

After a horrible collision with Christian Romero at the 60th minute, Man City’s first-choice goalkeeper Ederson&nbsp;was taken off&nbsp;due to concussion. With City leading 1-0 at the points after Erling Haaland had scored the opening goal in the 50th minute, Pep Guardiola had to gamble on Stefan Ortega. Knowing a draw would have seen Arsenal in pole position in the title race, Spurs almost scored an equaliser when Son Hueng Min was one-on-one with Ortega in the 86th minute.&nbsp;

However, Ortega made a title-winning save as he denied Son a potential equaliser, keeping&nbsp;City ahead in the match. The save later proved&nbsp;to be&nbsp;crucial as Erling Haaland converted a penalty four minutes later to seal a famous 2-0 win. The win was their first in the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League, which&nbsp;also denied Spurs from scoring at home for the first time this season.&nbsp;

No VAR from next season? Premier League clubs to vote on scrapping ‘dodgy’ technology

Erling Haaland scored twice to settle Manchester City's nerves as the Premier League champions beat Tottenham 2-0 to take a giant step towards a historic fourth straight English title on Tuesday.

The Norwegian forward tapped home a pinpoint Kevin De Bruyne cross early in the second half to score City's first-ever league goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And he netted a late penalty to seal the three points for the visitors, minutes after substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saved brilliantly from Son Heung-min.

The win takes Pep Guardiola's team two points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table after 37 games.

Victory at the Etihad against West Ham on Sunday will make them champions for a fourth consecutive season, regardless of the Gunners' result against Everton.

No team in English top-flight history has ever won four titles in a row.

Defeat for Spurs also guarantees that Aston Villa will finish in the fourth Champions League spot, joining City, Arsenal and Liverpool in Europe's top-tier competition next season.&nbsp;

"We gave the chance in our hands for the last game," Guardiola told the BBC. "The tennis players say 'The serve to win Wimbledon, the last game, is the most difficult one'.

"It happened in our period against Aston Villa (in 2022). And many, many years ago it happened with Sergio Aguero (scoring) in 93 minutes 20 seconds against QPR. So there will be the typical game."

Guardiola called for help from City's fans to get them over the line.

"We know what we're playing for," he said. "The tension is there, the rival is so good. It's why it is difficult, we know that.

"Everyone come to the stadium and make noise. These games are more difficult but you have to do it. We'll have one day off, two days to prepare, and then we will do our best."

<h2>Stand up if you hate Arsenal</h2>

The build-up to the game in north London was dominated by a fierce debate over whether home fans wanted their own team to lose in order to leave City in the driving seat, with Arsenal their nearest challengers.

The Spurs supporters made their feelings towards their bitter local rivals clear in the opening minutes, with chants of "Stand up if you hate Arsenal" ringing around the stadium.

Tottenham had the first sight of goal, with City's Ederson tipping over a fierce Rodrigo Bentancur effort before Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kept out Phil Foden's close-range shot.

City, who came into the match unbeaten in 21 league matches, were short of their fluent best while Spurs struggled to put the finishing touches to their attacking moves.

Moments after the re-start Vicario dived full length to keep out a stinging De Bruyne effort.

But the visitors broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Bernardo Silva found De Bruyne in the box and the Belgian crossed for Haaland to slot home from point-blank range.

Thousands of Spurs fans chanted "Are you watching Arsenal" as the City faithful celebrated in their corner.

The game then became disjointed as De Bruyne was raked down the Achilles by Pape Sarr before Ederson took a blow to the head in denying Cristian Romero and was replaced shortly afterwards by Ortega.

The German was called into action immediately, denying substitute Dejan Kulusevski from close range.

Time stood still when Son burst through with five minutes of normal time remaining but Ortega saved with his legs when the South Korean seemed certain to score.

Guardiola fell to the ground, clutching his head in disbelief.

Instead City were awarded a penalty when Pedro Porro brought down substitute Jeremy Doku and Haaland smashed home in the 91st minute to spark wild celebrations from the players in front of the City faithful, taking his league tally to 27 goals for the season.

Last year's treble winners will prepare for Sunday's finale knowing they stand just 90 minutes away from creating another slice of football history.&nbsp;

Last year's treble winners will prepare for Sunday's finale knowing they stand just 90 minutes away from creating another slice of football history.

Erik ten Hag has hit back at Wayne Rooney's comments that some of Manchester United players who were seemingly injured were actually fit enough to play but refused to do so to avoid the heat.

Erik ten Hag has hit back at Wayne Rooney's comments that some of Manchester United players who were seemingly injured were actually fit enough to play but refused to do so to avoid the heat. The United manager retaliated saying all of his injured players were "desperate" to be involved. The Dutch manager has been without his top players throughout the season, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rasford and Harry Maguire facing a race against time in order to be fit for the Wembley FA Cup final against Manchester City. “No. You have to see here in Carrington [at the training centre] the players are desperate to play. I see Licha [Lisandro] Martínez, I see Bruno [Fernandes] – he did a fitness test on Sunday to play. [Marcus] Rashford did everything he could do. He trained and tried to train last week but he didn’t make it," Ten Hag said. "Players are desperate to play, they want to be in the right shape. You see also Victor Lindelöf and Raphaël Varane, they are training to make themselves available for the [FA Cup] final. They do what they can do.” What did Rooney say? Notably, after the match against Arsenal where United suffered a 0-1 loss, following a first-half goal from Leandro Trossard, Rooney made the sensational claim. The former United captain said: "As we look at the injuries they've picked up, some of those players can play, 100 per cent." "When you have the European Championship coming up and an FA Cup final, it's easy for players to stay out of it a little bit, get back for the final and make sure they're ready for the European Championship. I've seen it myself over the years," added Rooney. Rooney, who was recently fired as Birmingham City manager, said the brunt of players pulling out of the matches will be then faced by Ten Hag who has to square up against the media. "The players who are injured are not filling themselves in any credit at the minute. The manager is going to take all the stick for that." 'The foundations are fairly fragile': Ange Postecoglou slams Tottenham fans after Man City pick decisive win

Pep Guardiola said "history is in front of us" as he prepares his Manchester City team for a potentially tricky match at Tottenham on Tuesday that could ultimately decide the destination of the Premier League title.

City, chasing an unprecedented fourth straight top-flight English league crown, are one point behind leaders Arsenal but crucially have a game in hand.

If City beat Spurs they will be able to seal the championship with a win at home to West Ham on the final day of the season on Sunday, when Arsenal host Everton.

Guardiola's men are charging towards the finishing line, hitting 28 goals in their past seven Premier League matches and conceding just five times.

But the City boss, who said he was relishing the high-pressure title run-in, denied that the race was already effectively over.

"Fifteen goals (in four matches) is fine, it gave us the points to be here but it doesn't give you an extra thing for tomorrow when you start the game," Guardiola told Monday's pre-match press conference.

"The mindset is easy, in terms of if we don't win we are not going to win the Premier League and this is what we have to do."

City have never won a league match at Tottenham's new stadium, which opened in 2019, and have not even scored a goal, though they won there in the FA Cup in January.

Guardiola said despite his team's poor record at the ground, they had played well there "many times".

"But to do something in this country that has never been done before you have to do something special, exceptional I would say," he said.

"It's not ever happened in the Premier League. We have to do it this time. History is in front of us and we have to accept we have not done it. It's the time to do it, otherwise Arsenal will be champions."

Guardiola said he had "huge respect" for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, whose team still have an outside chance of securing a Champions League place for next season, though a win for Aston Villa against Liverpool later on Monday would end those hopes.

"The difficulties are there but at the same time we know what we are playing for -- to give us the chance for the last game at home depending on us," he said.

"This is the mindset that we have."

<h2>Martinez scripts unwanted&nbsp;history</h2>

In the opening two minutes of the match on Monday, Harvey Elliot’s deflected shot came in his way, but he&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;hold on to the ball. Despite the best efforts to save the goal, he&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;avoid the embarrassment and parried the ball over the goalline for Liverpool’s opener. The embarrassing moment saw him register his third own goal in his Premier League career, becoming the highest-scoring person between the sticks.&nbsp;

Previously, he&nbsp;was level for most own goals scored by goalkeepers alongside&nbsp;Mark Bunn, Petr Cech, Shay Given, Rob Green, Kasper Schmeichel, Russell Hoult, Tom Heaton, Tim Krul, Bernd Leno, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Richard Wright.&nbsp;Martinez now has three own goals&nbsp;which&nbsp;makes&nbsp;him stand atop the unwanted list of the record.&nbsp;

His first own goal came against his former side Aston Villa in February&nbsp;2023&nbsp;while earlier in the&nbsp;season&nbsp;he scored an own goal against Luton Town in a frantic win.&nbsp;
