<p>India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, and everyone, from cricketers to footballers to former and current stars across all sports, extended their heartfelt greetings on social media. Be it Indian cricket all-rounder Hardik Pandya or two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra - the sporting heroes celebrated the country’s Independence Day with their fans.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Indian contingent at the recently concluded Paris Olympic Games 2024 had a mixed outing. While some came agonisingly close to winning an Olympic medal but finished fourth in their respective disciplines, others, like ace Shooter Manu Bhaker, created history, becoming the first Indian athlete – male or female, to win two medals in a single edition.</p>

There were three medal debutants: Sarabjot Singh and Swapnil Kusale in Shooting and Aman Sehrawat in Freestyle Wrestling.</p>

<p>However, what made headlines at the sporting spectacle was grappler Vinesh Phogat, who got disqualified from the gold medal match for being overweight by 100gms. Although she appealed against the decision at the Court of Arbitration (CAS), the verdict came against her.&nbsp;</p>

Cricketers, Olympic athletes celebrate India’s 78th Independence Day

<p>India’s legendary hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh will receive a big honour from Hockey India after the federation announced its decision to retire jersey no. 16 on Wednesday (Aug 14). Sreejesh, who helped India win back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympic Games in hockey, recently announced his retirement from the sport. Hockey India proposed the initiative of retiring the no. 16 jersey to honour the contribution and achievements of Sreejesh&nbsp;who served the Indian hockey team for almost two decades.</p>

<h2><strong>Sreejesh jersey no. 16 to retire</strong></h2>

<p>"Sreejesh will groom the next Sreejesh in the junior team, who will wear the No. 16 jersey," Hockey India’s Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh remarked during a ceremony honouring the veteran goalkeeper.</p>

<p>The Indian goalie had announced before the Paris Olympics that he would retire from professional hockey after the tournament. Having debuted in 2006 for the national side, Sreejesh was pivotal in India’s run at the Tokyo Olympics which ended the nation’s 41-year wait for a medal in hockey. He again played a crucial role in India’s campaign at the Olympics in Paris producing a Player of the Match performance against Great Britain in the quarterfinal.</p>

<p>The 36-year-old&nbsp;made crucial saves in open play before making valuable saves in the penalty shootout to help India reach the semifinal. Having donned the no.&nbsp;16 jersey during most&nbsp;of his career, his jersey will no longer be available for any senior player.</p>

<p>PR Sreejesh is named the Indian contingent’s second flag bearer at the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony, joining ace shooter and two-time medallist Manu Bhaker, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced on Friday (August 9). PR Sreejesh won his second Olympic bronze medal on Thursday (August 8), with India beating Spain 2-1 in the men's hockey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The IOA president, PT Usha, said the Indian hockey veteran was an emotional and popular choice within the IOA leadership, including the Chef de Mission Gagan Narang and the Indian contingent.</p>

<p>Chopra, who stood second in his second Summer Games, agreed immediately with Sreejesh’s name as the joint flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony on Sunday (August 11).</p>

<p>“I spoke with Neeraj Chopra and appreciate the spontaneity and grace with which he agreed that Sreejesh should be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony,” PT Usha continued. “He told me ‘Ma’am, even if you had not asked me, I would have suggested Sree bhai’s name’. It is reflective of the immense respect Neeraj has for Sreejesh and his contribution to Indian sport.”</p>

<h2><strong>Bhaker, Sreejesh – the heroes</strong></h2>

<p>Considering nearly half a dozen fourth-place finishes for several athletes across different disciplines at the Paris Olympics 2024, the Indian contingent has had a tough time at this Summer Games. However, there are a few moments to cherish, including five medals won thus far, with three coming in shooting and one each in the men’s hockey and javelin throw, respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker, 22, made headlines at her second Games by winning two medals (bronze) in a single edition, becoming the first Indian and female shooter from the country to achieve this milestone. For what she achieved and made India proud with her achievements, the IOA decided to name her the flag bearer earlier.</p>

<p>Besides, PR Sreejesh capped off his incredible career with his second bronze medal in Paris, while Neeraj won the silver medal in the javelin throw final while battling his groin injury.&nbsp;</p>

Paris Olympics 2024 Closing Ceremony: PR Sreejesh joins Manu Bhaker as India's flag bearers

<p>Veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh starred in his farewell match as Team India beat Spain 2-1 to win the bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games 2024. For the first time in 52 years, the Indian men’s hockey team won back-to-back bronze medals at the Summer Games in this discipline, winning it twice in 1968 and 1972, then in 2020 (Tokyo), and now in Paris 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to several stars across different sports, everyone congratulated the Indian men's hockey team for the victory.</p>

<p>Following losing to Germany (3-2) in the semi-final, Team India was determined to take home the bronze medal, giving an almost-fitting farewell to the game’s iconic figure, PR Sreejesh.</p>

<p>The Indian captain, Harmanpreet Singh, was on the score sheet, hitting a brace against Spain as India clinched a clinical win to take home the fourth medal (overall) of this Summer Games. The bronze in men’s hockey is India’s fourth bronze medal of the Paris Olympics, with the previous three coming in the Shooting discipline, two of which Manu Bhaker won.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, India conceded the goal in the second quarter (18th minute) before the man of the tournament for the Men in Blue, Harmanpreet stepped up and equalised in the 30th minute; three minutes later, he scored the winner in the 33rd minute.</p>

With the final scheduled for Saturday, August 12, the game will be India's chance to bag their fourth title, whereas it is the maiden ACT final for the Malaysian side. India earlier beat Malaysia 5-0 in the league game and will look for a repeat of the performance.</p>

<h2><strong>Sreejesh on milestone appearance</strong></h2>

<p>"During the game, I get to guide and remind our players about the strategy (defensive or attacking) and keep them positive. Sacrifice, discipline, focus, passion, and hard work have been behind success,” Sreejesh said in an exclusive conversation with WION’s Sidharth MP in Chennai.</p>

<p>Talking about his achievements thus far,&nbsp;he urges young players to maintain composure and not let highs or lows get to their heads and affect their game.&nbsp;Sreejesh also sees great potential in the young goalkeeping talent that India is honing.</p>

<p>The Malaysian and Indian sides are heading into the final, riding high on their thumping wins from Friday evening. Malaysia had defeated Korea 6-2, while India trounced Japan 5-0. Interestingly, Team India has remained undefeated throughout this edition of the ACT. Of the six games India has played so far, they have won five and drawn one (the first game against Japan).</p>

<p>Recalling his journey representing India in 300 International games, 35-year-old Sreejesh mentioned how he owes it all to the team and the game of hockey. Offering insights into his crucial role as both a goalie and an experienced player, Sreejesh said that the goalkeeper watches the game unfold in front of him and serves as the on-field coach.</p>

<p>Sharing his analysis of the India-Japan semi-final, Indian Head Coach Craig Fulton said, we did all that we wanted to do and played well.</p>

<p>"The skill and quality of our side came through in the India-Japan game. The best we can do is balance field goals and Penalty corners, we have a good, must-win final game against Malaysia" he added.</p>

<p>Queried about what changed between the drawn game against Japan and the 5-0 Semifinal against Japan, he told WION, "At the start of the tournament, we had foreseen that we'd need about 5-6 days to settle and now we're in full flow. The team is full of confidence."</p>

<p>Regarding the team's preparations for the upcoming Asian Games in China, he told WION, "After this tournament, we'll fully assess all our recent performances. This will include our performances in the Pro League, Spanish games, and Asian Champions trophy."</p>

<p>India are the only team still unbeaten in the ongoing tournament as they look for a clean sweep. They will heavily rely on the services of Sreejesh and skipper Harmanpreet Singh who has scored eight goals in the tournament so far. The Indian team will look to develop momentum for the Olympics, which are less than a year away from now.</p>

<p>"I am very fortunate to play my third World Cup on my home soil, its a great blessing for me. Odisha is hosting back-to-back World Cups which is huge, the team, the coach, everyone's excited to play in this new ground in Rourkela in front of 25000 people," PR Sreejesh said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The head coach, Graham Reid also commented on the prospect of this sport growing in the country given the World Cup is happening across two cities this time. He said,</p>

Despite a heartbreaking loss to the Aussies in the semis, Punia &amp; Co. locked horns with New Zealand in their bronze medal face-off and returned with a 2-1 win in the penalties to win a CWG medal after 16 years.</p>

<p>Thus, this became Indian women's team's first-ever bronze medal at the Games, following a gold medal in Manchester 2002 and silver in Melbourne 2006. While India didn't attain gold, they would be happy to not return empty-handed after missing out on bronze by a whisker in Tokyo 2020.</p>

<p>Seasoned goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played a crucial role as India men`s team claimed a first Olympic medal in over four decades when it won bronze at last years Olympic Games in Tokyo, has been named as The World Games Athlete of the Year for 2021.<br />

In a global fan vote conducted on TheWorldGames.org, Sreejesh finished well clear at the top of the 24-strong nomination list, with his tally of 1,27,647 votes being almost twice as many as the second-placed athlete, Spa`n`s Sport Climbing ace Albert Ginés Lopez, who garnered 67,428 votes.<br />

Sreejesh becomes the second hockey player to win the award, following in the footsteps of compatriot and India w`men`s captain Rani, who took the 2019 prize, the FIH said in a release on Monday.<br />

Speaking about the Award, the shot-stopper -- who was also voted as FIH Goalkeeper of the Year for 2021 -- said: "I`m very honoured to win this award. First of all, a big thank you to FIH for nominating me for this award, and secondly thanks to all the Indian hockey lovers around the world, who voted for me.</p>

"By getting nominated I did my part, but the rest was done by the fans and hockey lovers. So, this award goes to them, and I think they deserve this award more than me. It`s a big moment for Indian Hockey as well because everyone in the hockey community, all the hockey federations around the world voted for me, so it`s great to see that support from the hockey family," Sreejesh, a veteran of 244 senior international matches, was quoted as saying by the FIH.<br />

The three-time Olympian further added, "Also, I am a person who doesn`t believe in ndividual awards, especially when you are part of a team. It`s not only the team of 33 players, but you have a lot of people involved behind as well, there`s coaching staff, there`s support staff, there`s a great association like Hockey India who is supporting you a lot, there`s Sports Authority of India (SAI), who are providing you with all the world-class facilities to train, there`s Odisha Government whose unwavering support helps the sport grow and flourish and there`s India Olympic Association (IOA) as well, who`re taking care of you really well. So, it`s a collective effort of a nation to get this kind of recognition."<br />
