Perth Scorchers extended their Big Bash League (BBL) dominance by winning a record sixth title, beating Sydney Sixers by six wickets at Perth Stadium on Sunday (Jan 25). Chasing 133, Scorchers made a strong start with openers Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen putting on 80 runs in just over eight overs, putting the Sixers under pressure early. Despite a couple of quick dismissals, big-hitter Josh Inglis guided the team home, finishing the match with a six. Earlier, the Scorchers’ bowlers did a brilliant job, restricting the Sixers to 132, with Jhye Richardson and David Payne taking three wickets each, while Mahli Beardman claimed two.

Openers set the tone, Inglis seals win
The Scorchers’ chase was powered by an explosive opening stand between Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen. Marsh looked in complete control, playing aggressive shots through the off-side, while Allen complemented him with clean hitting and quick running between the wickets. Their partnership of 80 runs in just 8.2 overs effectively ended the Sixers’ hopes of a comeback. Also read | Meet top 5 batters fastest to 21,000 international runs After their dismissal, Aaron Hardie and skipper Ashton Turner failed to make a mark, leaving the team needing a solid finish. That responsibility fell on Josh Inglis, whose experience and big-hitting ability ensured a comfortable finish. Inglis’ final six not only sealed the win but also highlighted his value as a match-winner in high-pressure situations.
Scorchers’ bowling dominates Sixers
The victory was set up by Perth’s disciplined bowling attack. After electing to field first, Jhye Richardson and David Payne led the way with three wickets each, while Mahli Beardman chipped in with two crucial dismissals. The Sixers struggled to build partnerships, with Steve Smith, Josh Philippe, and Moises Henriques all falling for just 24 runs respectively. None of the batters managed to score big, and the total of 132 was always going to be challenging to defend against a strong Scorchers batting lineup. This win marks Perth’s ninth appearance in a BBL final and reinforces their position as the most consistent team in the league’s history. With six titles to their name, the Scorchers continue to set the benchmark for excellence in the Big Bash League.

Perth Scorchers claim record sixth BBL title, defeating Sydney Sixers with strong batting and bowling performances, continuing their dominance in the Big Bash League.

Big Bash League: Sydney Sixers win last-ball thriller against Perth Scorchers to enter qualifiers - WATCH

The Big Bash League match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers was called off on Sunday (Dec. 10) due to unsafe pitch at Geelong cricket ground, Australia. The Renegades were 30/2 in 6.5 overs when the game was called off by the umpires with Aaron Hardie unbeaten on 20 off 23 and Josh Inglis batting on 3 off 7.

The pitch got damaged due to consistent rain on Saturday (Dec. 9) and water which crept under the covers. Cricket Australia issued a statement on the incident which read: "CA will conduct a thorough review into the extremely frustrating circumstances that have resulted in the game being abandoned and a huge disappointment for fans and players."

Big Bash League match between Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers called off due to unsafe pitch

Melbourne Stars will miss a gem in Glenn Maxwell for their next BBL tie against Perth Scorchers due to injury. The ‘Big Show’ - as most fans often refer to him, suffered an injury to his forearm during the curtain-raiser against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, where he scored 23 off 14 balls.

During the game, he got medical attention twice and even had his forearm tapped. After his dismissal, Maxwell was spotted using an ice pack inside the dugout.

With Maxwell out of the next game, the onus would again fall on seasoned campaigner Marcus Stoinis to shoulder the responsibility in the batting line-up. Glenn’s absence means Stars will also miss a crucial bowling option in the middle overs. All of this will pile pressure on them, considering they will look to bounce back following an embarrassing start to the tournament (losing the opener by 103 runs).

Though Stars will be without Maxwell in their next tie against Perth on Wednesday (December 13), the all-rounder is expected to return to the XI for their third match of the season against Sydney Thunders in Albury on December 23.

"Biggest forearms in the world, and he's pulled a muscle," team-mate Hilton Cartwright joked before Maxwell’s injury confirmation. "He's had a nice break, came back super positive, and he's still super positive [after the loss]. On a night like tonight, you've got to keep reminding yourself you're not a bad team."

Another star player out

Besides Maxwell, Stars will also miss their experienced all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile after he suffered a calf strain against Brisbane Heat. Nathan walked out to bat at number 11 with a runner during the game.

"Nathan Coulter-Nile will undergo scans this weekend to determine damage to a calf injury suffered whilst bowling against the Brisbane Heat," a club statement said.

Meanwhile, the Stars are hopeful of including one of their foreign recruits, Haris Rauf, in their next game against Perth. Rauf didn’t feature in the opener as he landed in the country by then.

ALSO READ: AUS v PAK: ‘We protect each other a lot’ - Captain Cummins on backing Warner over Johnson’s criticism "Biggest forearms in the world, and he's pulled a muscle," team-mate Hilton Cartwright joked before Maxwell’s injury confirmation. "He's had a nice break, came back super positive, and he's still super positive [after the loss]. On a night like tonight, you've got to keep reminding yourself you're not a bad team." Another star player out Besides Maxwell, Stars will also miss their experienced all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile after he suffered a calf strain against Brisbane Heat.

Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft scored just two runs after returning from a nine-month ban while playing in a Big Bash League clash on Sunday.

Bancroft came in after Ashton Turner's wicket but lost his wicket to Riley Meredith after facing three balls at Launceston's Aurora Stadium.

His ban for ball-tampering expired on December 29 and he was immediately rushed into the Perth Scorchers squad for their BBL clash with the Hobart Hurricanes.

The 26-year-old opener was suspended from international and state cricket after attempting to alter the ball in a Test against South Africa in March.

Then-Australian captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner were exiled for a year with their suspensions due to run out in late March.

"What a journey this has been over the last nine months," Bancroft wrote on Instagram when his ban got completed.

"Grateful of where I am and the person I continue to grow to be. Thank you to every person, group, team and community I have come across over the last nine months. You know who you are."
