&nbsp;A surprise search operation planned by the police's anti-narcotics squad at the house of a suspected drug dealer in southern India turned out into a nightmare after they were confronted by several violent dogs.

It has now emerged that the suspect in Kottayam, Kerala had trained the dogs to bite anyone who was wearing a police uniform.

The search operation on Sunday night (September 23) was hindered by the presence of the dogs which also helped the accused in escaping the police, while the officials focused on avoiding the attacks of the canines.

However, the officials were able to subdue the dogs and seize over 17 kilogrammes of ganja from the site, said the police.

"The accused had imparted training to the dogs to bite on seeing khaki [the common police uniform colour in India]," a senior police official said.

"He had been briefly trained in dog handling by a person retired from the BSF [Border Security Force], but was kicked out from there for asking questions like how to make dogs bite someone wearing khaki,"&nbsp;SP K Karthick IPS told reporters.

He said it was almost midnight when the anti-narcotics squad, &nbsp;along with the officers from the nearby Gandhinagar police station, reached the location,&nbsp;Kottayam.

"We did not expect there would be so many dogs here and that they would be violent. So, we faced difficulty initially in carrying out a proper search. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured," said the police official.&nbsp;

<h2>Police to hand back 13 dogs to their owners</h2>

The district police's top officer further said that the accused, who was living under the guise of a dog trainer, was a drug seller and the same was proved after they seized more than 17 kgs of ganja from the site.

"According to our preliminary investigation, he (the accused) was living here on rent and was known to everyone in the area as a dog trainer. Therefore, people used to leave their dogs with him, at the rate of ₹ 1,000 per day, when they went outside and he would look after the canines," Karthick said.

At present, around 13 dogs are present at the site and after their owners have been identified, the police will hand over the canines to them.

He further said that they have constituted a special investigation team to look into the case. &nbsp;"We first need to catch the accused and then find out if any others were also involved in the racket," the officer stated.

The birth rate dropped below 400,000 in Italy in 2022 for the first time as it registered the 14th consecutive annual fall with the overall population marking a decline by 179,000 to 58.85 million.

While addressing the conference on the growing demographic crisis, Pope Francis stated that the decline in the birthrate has signalled a dearth of hope for the future as younger generations remain weighed down by a sense of fragility, precariousness and uncertainty.&nbsp;

"The free market, without the necessary corrective measures, becomes savage and produces increasingly serious situations and inequalities," he further stated.&nbsp;

The pope said that pets have started replacing children in a few households and recounted how a woman had opened her bag and requested a papal blessing for "her baby" at a recent audience, only to reveal to everyone that it was a dog.

"I lost my patience and upbraided her saying many children are hungry and you bring me a dog," Pope Francis said.

However, the pope acknowledged that there were "almost insurmountable constraints" on the country's young women who have to choose between motherhood and their career. "Given the high costs involved in raising children, people were revising their priorities," he stated.

At least eight people,&nbsp;including an unborn child, were killed in a shooting at a church in Hamburg, German police said on Thursday.&nbsp;There was "no indication of a terrorist background"&nbsp;to the attack, a spokesperson for the Hamburg prosecution’s office said. The assailant was later declared dead&nbsp;by the security forces.&nbsp;

The police said the shooting took place at a Jehovah’s Witnesses centre at about 9 pm local time (around 2000 GMT). The primary assailant is reported to be a former member of the local community of Jehovah's Witnesses.&nbsp;

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he was left "speechless" by the shooting at a Jehovah’s Witness place of worship in his hometown of Hamburg and his thoughts went out to the victims and their relatives.

"We fear that further victims may die from their severe wounds," he said while thanking the security forces for their work.

No exact death toll was shared by the police, but various German national media outlets confirmed that at least eight people had died in the attack, while eight others had been injured.

TV footage showed armed police storming the building and escorting people out with their hands above their heads.

According to the Bild daily newspaper, the shooting happened in a Jehovah's Witness church in the city that has Germany’s biggest port.&nbsp;

Hamburg church shooting leaves 8 dead, including unborn child

Almost 10 people are reported to be buried in an avalanche that occurred in western Austria's Lech/Zuers free skiing area on Sunday, reported the Austrian Press Agency (APA), adding that the authorities have been able to rescue one person.

"One person was able to be rescued, efforts continue to find the others," a police spokesperson said.

The avalanche took place around 3 pm (1400 GMT) on Christmas day, stated APA, adding that search teams and various helicopters were deployed soon afterwards.

In a conversation with the Guardian, Birring said, "If Gefapixant becomes available, it could be a game-changer in respiratory medicine." He further added that it is a very effective treatment and will work for most patients.&nbsp;

Birring said that since "Gefapixant" is the first new drug that has been approved in over 50 years, there's a high possibility that thousands of people will be suitable for this treatment.&nbsp;

For the trial, every day, individuals were given 15 mg&nbsp;to 45 mg&nbsp;twice daily. The researchers found that giving 45 mg&nbsp;to people brought a major reduction in cough. The results of the trials were published in the Lancet.&nbsp;

However, in contrast, over half of the patients found that their taste ability was either affected or disappeared when they were consuming the drug.&nbsp;

Birring later said that most of the individuals later believed that these side effects are worth paying for as they are now relieved from coughing and not just that, people are now able to sleep better than they used to when they were coughing.&nbsp;

The study was published in the journals JAMA Internal Medicine and JAMA Neurology.

The study used data from the UK biobank to correlate step counts from 78,500 UK&nbsp;adults aged between 40 and 79. However, individuals who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, or dementia were included in the final assessment.

Head researcher, Dr. Matthew Ahmadi, said, "The take-home message here is that for protective health benefits, people could not only ideally aim for 10,000 steps a day but also aim to walk faster," ANI reported.

However, for less active individuals, the study offers an option for them to maintain their health. Borja del Pozo, associate researcher, Cruz said that the research also shows that as few as 3,800 steps a day can cut the risk of dementia by 25 per cent.

Pakistan struggles to deal with devastating floods, death toll exceeds 1,300

Fighters from the Islamist insurgent group Al-Shabaab have killed at least 19 civilians in a night-time attack in central&nbsp;Somalia, clan chiefs and local officials said on Saturday.

The attack comes two weeks after Al-Shabaab, which has waged a long insurgency against the Somali state, besieged a hotel in the capital Mogadishu for 30 hours, leaving 21 people dead and 117 injured.

The sources said at least eight vehicles were travelling on a road between the towns of Beledweyne and Maxaas when the insurgents intercepted and burned them and killed the passengers overnight Friday to Saturday by Afar-Irdood village.

"The terrorists massacred innocent civilians who were travelling... last night. We don't have the exact number of victims, but 19 dead bodies have been collected," local clan elder Abdulahi Hared told AFP.

"The dead bodies are still being collected, including women and children. They could be more than 20," said Ali Jeyte, the governor of the Hiiraan region where the attack happened.

"This was a horrible attack that has never happened in our region. These were innocent civilians who did nothing to deserve this," added another local clan leader, Mohamed Abdirahman.

Al-Shabaab in a statement said they targeted fighters from a local sub-clan that recently helped government forces and that they killed 20 "militiamen and those who were transporting material for them", destroying nine of their vehicles.

Local fighters and the security forces recaptured several villages from Al-Shabaab in the region in late August.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud "strongly condemns the despicable acts of murder against innocent civilians", the Somali presidency said on Twitter.

"The President underscored that his government will leave no stone unturned in the fight against terrorism in&nbsp;Somalia&nbsp;and the region."

Delhi reported 917 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours with a case positivity rate of 19.20 per cent, as per a bulletin from the Delhi Health Department. The positivity rate is close to 20 per cent, the highest in the past seven months. In Delhi, 4,775 tests have been performed in the last 24 hours.

The capital currently has 6,867 active cases. As per the health ministry, there were 1,566 recoveries and three deaths in Delhi in the last 24 hours, PTI reported.

This was then tested on teeth in a lab that was stained with soy sauce, coffee, tea, blueberry juice, and other substances.

The teeth gradually became whiter after the treatment and green light, and the enamel was unharmed. In the test, 94 per cent of the bacteria in biofilms were killed. This was then tested on rats as well and showed a positive response in preventing cavities.

Hence, as per the researchers, their risk-free, brush-free method safely whitens the teeth and also prevents cavities.

COVID-19: Australian government encourages people to 'work from home'

Thirteen&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;were&nbsp;killed&nbsp;and two others injured on Monday in yet another bloody&nbsp;fight&nbsp;in a notorious Ecuadoran&nbsp;prison, law enforcement&nbsp;officials&nbsp;said.

"Unfortunately, central command reports 13 (inmates) dead and two injured," the South American country's&nbsp;prison&nbsp;authority SNAI said on Twitter.

The incident took place at the same Bellavista&nbsp;prison&nbsp;in the town of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Quito, where 44&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;were&nbsp;killed&nbsp;in a bloody brawl in May.

Prison&nbsp;officials, aided by the military and the police, were able to regain control of the facility, SNAI said.

"Relatives of the&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;waited anxiously outside the&nbsp;prison, as images of dismembered bodies reached their cell phones and they remained undaunted by the entry of ambulances," read a story in the national newspaper El Universo.

Carrillo said that the "primitive act of barbarism" indicated the "psychological profile" of the&nbsp;inmates&nbsp;who took part in the brawl.

David Rumbens, a partner at Deloitte Access Economics, said that Finance, IT, insurance, Mining services, and public administration were amongst the most exposed industries exposed to a lack of skilled migrants. He further added that retail, hospitality, and lodging suffered due to a lack of foreign students and working vacationers. <o:p></o:p>

Rumbens claimed that there was “always a degree of mismatch between the unemployed and job vacancies,” The Guardian reported. He further mentioned that IT is a field in which Australia’s workforce has historically lacked training, with migration action as a stopgap measure.
