France's Kauli Vaast won men's surfing Olympic gold Monday on his Tahitian home waves at Teahupo'o, while the United States' Caroline Marks claimed gold in the women's event in a thrilling final that went down to the wire.

Vaast, who grew up nearby, beat Australian silver medallist Jack Robinson to claim France's first Olympic surfing gold after taking the two best waves of a high-level match.

Three-time world champion Gabriel Medina of Brazil, who went into the Games a widely tipped favourite, took the men's bronze, beating out Alonso Correa with a score of 15.54 to the Peruvian's 12.43

An AFP photograph of Medina celebrating after kicking out of a wave last week following a ride that earned a record Olympic score became a global sensation, and a defining image of the sport and the Paris Games.

Local prodigy Vaast took the lead against Robinson from the start, scoring a 9.50 on his first wave, and racking up a total of 17.67 against 7.83 for the Australian, who conceded in the final moments.

"The mana was with me today," Vaast said after the win, referring to a supernatural force in Polynesian culture.

"From the beginning, every day I felt it, it was there."

Winning on his home turf of Teahupo'o was "the cherry on the cake", he added. "For all of France, for all of Polynesia it's incredible."

Speaking 15,000 kilometres from the epicentre of the Paris Games, Vaast said he was unsure whether he could make it to the French capital to celebrate, noting he had another competition starting soon, "but I haven't decided yet -- we'll see".

In the women's final, Marks pipped Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb by just 0.17 points to become the second American Olympic surfing champion after Carissa Moore in 2021.

France's Johanne Defay took the women's bronze, scoring 12.66 to Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy's 4.93.

In an evenly matched final that was only decided in the final few minutes, the 22-year-old world champion Marks scored 10.50 with her best two waves, just enough to edge the Brazilian, who managed 10.33.

Born in Florida, the young American moved as a teenager to San Clemente, California, a hotbed of American surfing, where the WSL finals have been held for the past two years.

Paris Olympics 2024: France's Kauli Vaast, USA's Caroline Marks win surfing golds

Sweden's Armand Duplantis cemented his place in pole vaulting history by defending his Olympic crown in world record-setting style on Monday to underline his total dominance in the discipline.

The 24-year-old US-born prodigy, often described as a rock star of athletics by World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe, set a new world record of 6.25 metres as he claimed a second gold.

It was the first time in 68 years, since Bob Richards in 1952 and 1956, that a vaulter has won back-to-back titles.

Duplantis has been practically unbeatable over the last five years, winning every major title in the sport after being beaten at the Doha worlds in 2019 by American Sam Kendricks, who won silver on Monday.

Duplantis won Olympic gold in Tokyo three years ago before winning back-to-back outdoor World Championships in 2022 and 2023. He added two world indoor crowns in 2022 and 2024 as well as three straight European Championship titles in 2018, 2022 and 2024.

He is not immune to setting world records at global championships and Paris was the third time. It was also his ninth successive progression of the mark.

He broke the record twice in 2020, three times in 2022, twice in 2023 and for the first time this year, in April in the Xiamen Diamond League meet.

Duplantis said you get used to the pressure of being the man everyone wants to beat.

"Every competition I go to I'm going to be a big favourite. It is what it is. The reason for that is that I have been showing it as well," he said.

"I go into every competition trying to jump as high as I possibly can. I think it should be enough to do what I know I can do. You get used to it and you know how to control it."

Coached by his American father Greg, a former pole vaulter, Duplantis is a product of a track and field-crazy family which had their own vaulting apparatus in the garden, though he insists he was no "lab rat".

"I started pole vaulting when I was about four years old," Duplantis has said.

The six-time Louisiana state champion, who spent summers with his Swedish maternal grandparents in Sweden, added: "When you have a pole vault pit in your back yard, you're going to try it.

"I fell in love with pole vault at a young age and stuck with it."

Duplantis had already surpassed his father's personal best by the age of 17.

He announced his prodigious talent to a wider audience when he won the European outdoor title in Berlin in 2018 with a vault of 6.05m, a world junior record.

From then on, apart from the "blip" in Qatar, it has been a bed of roses for Duplantis, whose world record now stands a massive 9cm further than a previous best by another jumper, France’s Renaud Lavillenie.

The only rival to have hit the 6m barrier is American Chris Nilsen in Eugene in February. He was absent from Paris and his closest rival on the day was Kendricks with 5.95m.

Such is his dominance, Duplantis often enters competition when half the field have already bombed out.

He is then left in his element, goading the public into raucous support as he first nails victory and then ups the bar for a world record attempt.

So it was at a packed Stade de France, Duplantis playing his part to perfection in a performance that could not have been better scripted.

The Paris 2024 Olympics has again come under intense scrutiny after British swimmer Adam Peaty claimed that there were worms in the food served to the athletes and that the conditions of the Olympic Village are “just not good enough”.

The 29-year-old swimmer made the allegation and became the latest athlete who has trashed the village food as subpar, as reported by iNews.

Peaty, who clinched silver in the 100m breaststroke, slammed the organisers for taking the pledge of making 60 per cent of meals meat-free as part of their efforts to make the Games sustainable and said that it was just a punishment for athletes.

“I want to eat meat, I need meat to perform and that’s what I eat at home, so why should I change?” the swimmer said while speaking to the outlet, in an interview which was published Tuesday (August 6).

“I like my fish and people are finding worms in the fish. It’s just not good enough. The standard, we’re looking at the best of the best in the world — and we’re feeding them not the best," he added.

Peaty, who also contracted Covid during the Games, said that athletes have been “blindsided” by the challenges they are facing while living in the Olympic Village in Paris.

“The catering isn’t good enough for the level the athletes are expected to perform. We need to give the best we possibly can,” the swimmer said.

“Tokyo, the food was incredible, Rio was incredible. But this time around … there wasn’t enough protein options, long queues, waiting 30 minutes for food because there’s no queuing system," he added.

Reacting to the allegations, a Paris 2024 spokesperson said, “We are listening to the athletes and take their feedback very seriously. Since the opening of the village, our partner Sodexo Live! has been working proactively to adapt supplies to the growing use of the Olympic Village restaurants, as well as to the actual consumption by athletes observed over the first few days."

US gymnastics superstar Simone Biles polished off a redemptive Paris Olympics campaign with a floor exercise silver on Monday, shrugging off a balance beam fall to finish runner-up to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade.

Biles went into the final day of competition with a chance to push her tally of Paris gold to a record-setting five in one Games.

She had already led the United States to team gold, regained the all-around crown she first won as part of a four-gold haul in Rio in 2016 and soared to vault gold.

She couldn't find her way back to the top of the podium on Monday, but Biles said she'd leave Paris proud of all four of the medals that took her career total to eleven.

"Today has been absolutely wild," Biles said, adding that she was "actually very happy, proud and even more excited that it's over".

"I've accomplished way more than my wildest dreams not just at this Olympics but in the sport," said Biles, who owns a jaw-dropping 41 world and Olympic medals -- 30 of them gold.

"So I can't be mad at my performances," she added. "A couple of years ago I didn't think I'd be back here at an Olympic Games, so competing and then walking away with four medals. I'm pretty proud of myself."

Two out-of-bounds errors proved costly in Biles's otherwise breathtaking final floor routine.

Andrade had already moved into first place with an energetic and elegant performance that garnered 14.166 points.

Biles earned 14.133 for silver ahead of teammate Jordan Chiles, who took bronze with 13.766. Chiles's score was upgraded after a review of her degree of difficulty, a devastating blow for Romania's Ana Barbosu who thought she had bagged bronze with her score of 13.700.

Biles's legion of fans gave her a standing ovation anyway, and the American departed the floor mat with both arms raised in acknowledgement.

Her earlier fall from the beam -- one of several in the final -- was the first major hiccup of her triumphant Olympic return, three years after a bout of the disorientating "twisties" cut short her Tokyo Games campaign.

Biles finished fifth in beam, where Alice D'Amato became the first Italian woman gymnast to claim Olympic gold with a score of 14.366.

Teammate Manila Esposito joined D'Amato on the podium in third, with China's Zhou Yuqin taking silver.

The treacherous nature of the 10cm-wide beam was clear when the first three starters made big mistakes.

China's world silver medallist Zhou lost her balance and had to grab the beam to avoid coming off.

American medal contender Sunisa Lee took a hard fall onto the beam when her foot slipped at the end of an aerial series. Brazilian Julia Suarez also fell and Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fell twice.

D'Amato had a couple of minor wobbles in an otherwise impeccable routine to seize first place just before Biles competed.

The US superstar, again greeted rapturously by a Bercy Arena crowd dotted with celebrities, made a confident start.

But she, too, slipped off at the end of an aerial series, drawing a collective gasp from the crowd.

Biles said the lack of music during the beam routines -- which made random crowd noises such as phones and cameras more noticeable -- made for a "really weird and awkward" atmosphere.

"None of us liked it," she said. "It was an odd beam final."

Visibly disappointed, Biles had to wait an agonizingly long time for her score of 13.100 to be posted.

That was nowhere near good enough, and Biles's chance to join Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina and US swimmer Katie Ledecky as the only women to pile up nine Olympic golds was over -- at least for this year.

The 27-year-old hasn't quite ruled out a return for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

- Oka treble -

Japan's Shinnosuke Oka nabbed his third gold of the Games, adding the horizontal bar gold to his team and all-around titles.

In another apparatus final littered with mistakes, Oka edged 17-year-old Colombian Angel Barajas.

They finished with the same score of 14.533 but Oka, 20, pocketed the gold thanks to a higher score for execution.

There was nothing to separate China's Zhang Boheng and Taiwan's Tang Chia-Hung, who shared bronze on 13.966.

Oka added a fourth medal, bronze, in a parallel bars final won by China's defending champion Zou Jingyuan.

Zou scored a massive 16.200 points to retain the title he won in Tokyo in emphatic style, adding a first Paris gold to his team and rings silvers.

Ukraine's Illia Kovtun took silver with 15.500 points ahead of Oka's 15.300.

The Olympic mixed relay triathlon competition will be held as scheduled at 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) in Paris on Monday, organisers said in a statement after testing the water quality of the River Seine.

Training sessions for the swimming leg of the triathlon were cancelled due to poor water quality in the Seine and the men's event was put back to last Wednesday, taking place on the same day as the women's.

Organisers confirmed late on Sunday that the relay would take place, despite cancelling Sunday's training.

"A meeting was held... to review the water quality results," World Triathlon and the Paris Games Organising Committee said in a joint statement.

"During this meeting, World Triathlon took the decision to confirm the mixed relay competition..."

Belgium, however, will not take part after one of their athletes, Claire Michel, fell ill.

"Claire Michel, a member of the relay team, is unfortunately ill and must withdraw from the competition," the Belgian Olympic Committee (COIB) said in a statement.

"The COIB and Belgian Triathlon hope that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions at the Olympic Games.

The COIB released another statement to clarify that Michel was back in her room at the Olympic Village.

"We have seen various statements in national and international media with incorrect information," the second statement said.

"Please note that Claire Michel has not been in the hospital for four days. Furthermore, she was not hospitalised prior to today.

"It is correct that she was taken to the polyclinic in the Olympic Village earlier today for treatment."

World Triathlon said it had not heard from the Belgium team about withdrawing from the event.

"The team... chose their position on the pontoon this morning and checked-in their bikes ... We have not received any other communication from them," a spokesperson said.

Paris 2024 organisers wished Michel a quick recovery and said the water quality of the Seine on the morning of the women's race, in which she finished 38th, was very good.

"Paris 2024 wishes to remind everyone that the health and wellbeing of athletes is our top priority," the organising committee added in a statement.

"Water samples... on the morning of the individual triathlon events showed the quality to be at a level considered "very good" by World Triathlon's criteria, according to results analysed and released the following day."

Paris Olympics 2024: Mixed relay triathlon go ahead as scheduled on Monday, says organisers

Novak Djokovic described beating Carlos Alcaraz to claim the Olympic singles gold medal at the fifth attempt as the biggest achievement of his career on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Serb ended an eight-month trophy drought with a vintage display to win 7-6(3) 7-6(2) and complete his career Golden Slam in memorable fashion, not dropping a set in six matches at Roland Garros.

He is the oldest man to win the Olympic singles title since tennis returned to the Games in 1988 and remarkably he did it 21 days after being pummelled by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final and two months after undergoing knee surgery.

"I won the bronze in my first Olympic Games (2008) and ever since then failed to win the medal and played three out of four Olympic Games in semi-finals and couldn't overcome that obstacle," Djokovic, proudly wearing his medal, told reporters.

"And then now at age 37, with a 21-year-old that is probably the best player in the world right now, winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back and playing incredible tennis.

"When I take everything into consideration, this probably is the biggest sporting success I've ever had in my career."

The 24-time Grand Slam champion produced a level of tennis that has been missing this year to fight off Alcaraz.

After belting away a forehand winner to end a ferocious, near three-hour battle, the emotion poured out of Djokovic as he sobbed on court before climbing into the stands to embrace his family, including wife Jelena and son Stefan, and his team.

"Until today I thought that carrying the Serbian flag at the 2012 opening ceremony in London is the best feeling that an athlete could have," he said.

"This kind of supersedes everything that I imagined, that I hoped that I could experience and that I could feel."

Djokovic did not rule out playing at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, but said the realisation that Paris was probably his last swing at gold had motivated him.

"I was ready for this tournament and I didn't drop a set the entire tournament," he said. "I knew in the opening two rounds the way I was playing that this is my chance. If it's ever going to be, it's going to be now.

"When I qualified for the finals, I felt a big relief because that's the hurdle I wasn't able to surpass. I did celebrate like I won the tournament. But of course I wanted gold and I knew that I would have to climb the highest mountain there is at the moment, playing Alcaraz."

Djokovic saved eight break points during a match of stunning quality and intensity -- the Serb describing the duel as like few others he had ever experienced.

"I don't think I've ever played, maybe a few times in my life, such a high level for three hours for only two sets," he said. "Credit to him, congratulations to him for a great tournament, great fighting spirit."

Paris Games 2024: Novak Djokovic calls Olympic gold medal win as biggest sporting success of his career

Taiwan supporters celebrated their country's first gold medal at the Paris Games on Sunday during a badminton doubles final that took place without their national flag, as security staff enforced International Olympic Committee rules. Lee Yang and Wang-Chi-Lin retained their title by beating China's Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in front of euphoric Taiwanese supporters, but some of them saw their banners confiscated and had to rub out their face paint.

"I want to cheer for them," said Mina Syue, a 28-year-old engineer from Taiwan who said her banner had been confiscated after the guards checked the message with translation software.

Syue's banner was in the colours of Taiwan's flag -- a red background with 'Taiwan you're the best!' written in blue and white.

IOC rules prohibit flags or signs that include political messages or support countries that are not participating at the Olympics.

Taiwan competes at the Olympics as Chinese Taipei to avoid objections from China, which claims the democratically governed island as its own territory. Taiwan's government rejects Chinese sovereignty claims.

A Taiwanese family of four told Reuters they had painted the Taiwanese flag on their faces but were made to wash it off before they could enter the arena.

During the match spectators cheered 'Taiwan' each time their team scored a point. At least one supporter managed to sneak in the Taiwanese flag and wave it from the stands.

Uniting Taiwan

After the match, Taiwan supporters celebrated the gold medal victory chanting "Taiwan Taiwan" and "Taiwan number 1".

Taiwanese freelance artist Peng Cheng-yang had bought a last-minute ticket and travelled from Germany to see the match when he found out Taiwan would be playing China.

"It's a political action to be here, to show we are a country, to support our people. We don't need the flag - it's the people that is important," he said, adding he was "moved".

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Facebook that "the Lin-Yang team faced strong opponents and fought all the way to the end, uniting and inspiring Taiwan!"

When asked about the Taiwanese president's Facebook post, Lee and Wang paused for several seconds looking uncomfortable.

"Very tough question. We thank all the support we have received and will continue to work hard. We will put out better performances in the future," Wang said.

Spectator Christina Chang, a Tawainese education worker living in New York, said that she was very proud of the Taiwan players but that she clapped for the silver medallists too.

"It is not a political symbol. I'm excited as it's our first gold medal but the Chinese deserved the silver too - that's the beautiful thing about the Olympics," she said.

Isa Zhang, a 35-year-old China supporter living in Paris, said that although the team she was rooting for came second she was happy with the result because "China, Chinese Taipei - it's all the same for me."

At Taipei's main train station, supporters held a party to watch the final at 10 p.m. local time where they were able to stridently show their support with Taiwanese flags and political colours.

"It is an honour to have our flag represented in an important event ... I hope one day we can bravely hold our flag in an international event without (it) being snatched away," said Danny Tsai, 36, a local resident in the crowd.

ALSO READ: Paris Olympics 2024: USA's Noah Lyles wins men's 100m gold in 9.79 seconds - WATCH "I want to cheer for them," said Mina Syue, a 28-year-old engineer from Taiwan who said her banner had been confiscated after the guards checked the message with translation software. Uniting Taiwan After the match, Taiwan supporters celebrated the gold medal victory chanting "Taiwan Taiwan" and "Taiwan number 1". Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Facebook that "the Lin-Yang team faced strong opponents and fought all the way to the end, uniting and inspiring Taiwan!" When asked about the Taiwanese president's Facebook post, Lee and Wang paused for several seconds looking uncomfortable. Isa Zhang, a 35-year-old China supporter living in Paris, said that although the team she was rooting for came second she was happy with the result because "China, Chinese Taipei - it's all the same for me." Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold medal when she held off Croatia's Donna Vekic for a 6-2 6-3 win in a tense final on Saturday.

The 21-year-old sixth seed was given raucous support by a sizeable Chinese contingent inside Roland Garros's Court Philippe Chatrier and responded with a composed performance.

Vekic, herself bidding to become Croatia's first Olympic singles champion, battled hard to try to turn around the match but failed to capitalise on her opportunities.

Zheng was not at her sparkling best but raised her game when required to land the biggest prize of her career.

Serving for the match at 5-3, Zheng reached match points as Vekic drove a backhand wide and finished it off with a well-placed forehand winner before falling to her back with joy.

China's only other gold medal in Olympic tennis came in 2004 when Li Ting and Sun Tian-Tian won the women's doubles in Athens while the best previous singles performance was Li Na's run to the semi-finals in 2008, although she missed out on a medal.

Zheng, runner-up at the Australian Open this year, now looks capable of scaling the same heights as Li Na who claimed two Grand Slam titles during her illustrious career.

"Nothing can describe my feelings right now," Zheng told Eurosport on court before the medals ceremony.

"It's unreal, I was hoping to get a medal for China and I made it, I got the gold. I did everything I could."

Her victory completed a memorable week for China on the Parisian clay after Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen claimed the silver medal in the mixed doubles the previous evening.

Zheng, who men's finalist Novak Djokovic describes as his favourite female player, began the week in devastating fashion, beating former French Open runner-up Sara Errani 6-6 6-0.

She had to dig deep in long three-set epics against Emma Navarro and Germany's Angelique Kerber before stunning hot favourite Iga Swiatek to give herself a shot at gold.

The vastly-experienced Vekic presented a formidable obstacle in the final but Zheng started quickly to lead 3-0 and managed to stay in control by coming through some edgy games.

"I fought every single match, I feel like I had special energy and lots of support. My country will be proud and my family who I know will be screaming at home by the TV," she said.

Poland's Swiatek finished with the bronze medal after beating Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2 6-1 on Friday.

Paris Olympics 2024: Zheng Qinwen makes history with women's singles gold for China

Simone Biles soared to women's vault gold on Saturday, her gravity-defying Yurchenko double pike propelling her to a third triumph of the Paris Games and her seventh career Olympic crown.

Biles, who led the United States to team gold before grabbing all-around gold, produced a pair of stunning vaults to notch a resounding victory over Olympic and world champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.

American Jade Carey took bronze.

Biles took control with her opening vault, the Yurchenko double pike now named the Biles II.

Her height off the vault table was astonishing, and even though her momentum carried her back a step on landing, her execution score of 9.4, along with the 6.4 difficulty score for the move so tough no other woman attempts it, earned 15.700.

Biles produced another soaring effort on her second vault, a Cheng, scoring 14.900 for a winning average of 15.300.

Andrade opened with a beautiful Cheng vault that garnered 15.100 points and had a slight hop on landing of her second vault for a 14.833 and an average of 14.966.
